As a basic vanilla and chocolate lover, I always opt for the Original Cream Puff shell with Vanilla cream - I feel like this one tastes more creamier than the chocolate one, but chocolate is good too! My boyfriend loves ordering the different flavored shells, but tbh, the shells are a little too much for me aka too sweet (ex: raspberry chocolate shell, Oreo shell, etc.) and not necessary to enjoy their cream puffs. Staff is rude and inexperienced handling customers. Not stepping foot in there again. I Came in to buy some Sonny angels originally but then realized I had some rewards to use for my next purchase. While I was waiting in line, a customer went straight to the cashier and got tended. I loudly asked the staff behind the register where did the line begin and they pointed out right where I was standing. I said "then why isn't she in the back?" One of the employees looked at me and said "ohhh..." then continued to ignore me and continued to tend the customer. I let it go since I was two people away. Once it's my turn to get two my yummy cream puffs, I expressed I had rewards and wanted to use them (I chose the in-person option). The cashier told me I could only use them online through the app. Mind you I was using the app in fact. She then called another employee (youngster Asian girl) and they seemed confused and unsure on what to do. They kept telling me I could only use my rewards online so I asked "then why did it ask me to choose to use them in person or online?" I could see one the young girl manually waiving it and they charged me. I let it go. Once I finished my desert, I decided I wanted to buy one more trinket so I got in line again and got tended to pay. As I was saying thank you, the young Asian girl, rudely tells me to use the online reward option on the app next time that way she doesn't have to deal with all of that and doesn't contradict the managers rules. She says she doesn't know how to app works but to use it online regardless so I don't make it harder on them. I got pretty upset and disappointed at this statement as I shouldn't be told what to do if I am being asked options on the app itself. I got the ube lava cake and ube and pistachio gelato. Ube Lava Cake- Cake base is fluffy with a rich ube filling center. Served warm which is perfect for the textures. Been a fan of beard papas and now instead of going to down town LA's Little Tokyo, you can find it in Irvine. It's located inside Mochi Cafe. So if you can't find any signs or know where to look at, just enter Mochi and you'll see all their products in there. I love the cream puffs as that's that they are known for. The cream inside the puffs are just like ones I'd have in Japan. It's custard/vanilla is the original flavor. That's the only one I always get since it's the best in my opinion. You have have the puffs with different toppings like Dubai chocolate, matcha, and other seasonal flavors. Ofcourse you have to get some coffee to go with it so I tried their banana cold foam latte and it went great with it. Tons of seating inside but it's hot as their AC always seem to be turned off. It's been in Irvine for a very long time, and in my opinion, staying in business in one spot for that long in Irvine means the food is genuinely delicious. They have so many types of desserts, but I usually get the bingsu (shaved ice). This time, I tried the black sesame bingsu and wow... it was so good! Beard Papa's, is a very cute establishment in the plaza where Mitsuwa Irvine is located. Walking through the doors, the kids and I were in awe and immediately gravitated to the right where they had a wall theme of cats. Of course we took photos and talked about how the place had a fun and inviting atmosphere. Beard Papa's space is quite large with plenty of tables and seats with additional places to sit outside. The deco definitely gives you the happy feels. It's a cute place to grab dessert and chill with friends. Towards the back is where you will find the display cases for different desserts, as well as the cashier and some Asian toys or items for purchase. What we ordered; 1) Croissant Taiyaki with Nutella - I actually liked the texture of the croissant Taiyaki. It was buttery just like a croissant. It was different from other Taiyaki I've had but I enjoyed it. 2) Mochi ice creams - we had strawberry, which my kids didn't really like. They thought it tasted a bit like medicine. Mango, they favored this one much better. Matcha - it was ok for me. I felt like this didn't taste like true matcha. Overall, based on our experience, the deco, taiyaki and mochi, it was a 3 out of 5 stars for us. I would definitely return, but I probably would not do the mochi again. I've tried Beard Papa's first in Asia and have been to the Sawtelle location, but haven't tried it at this more conveniently located Irvine spot. It's inside the Mochi Desert spot at Heritage Plaza, which also serves gelato, bingsoo, coffee, macarons, Taiyaki, lava cakes and other desserts (they also sell Sonny Angel and Smitskis, interestingly enough). So if you're just here for the cream puffs, you will have to order in the same line as everyone else that's buying ice cream or toys. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating as well. Each cream puff is about $4-5, depending on the shell and filling flavor you choose. We ordered three different cream puffs: one with a green tea shell and matcha filling, another with a chocolate shell and chocolate filling, and a classic plain cream puff with vanilla filling. They fill your cream puffs to order which is probably why the choux pastry remains so crispy and airy. I was impressed by how light and airy the fillings were--perfectly balanced and not overly rich, so you can easily finish the whole puff. The shells were sweeter than the fillings, and I really enjoyed the dark chocolate shell with its lighter, mousse-like filling. The green tea flavor was strong, not artificial at all, and so yummy. The filling itself was incredibly addictive--smooth, custardy, and creamy. Though I'm not usually a fan of choux pastry, Beard Papa's version was perfectly airy and crispy, with great structural integrity. The fillings didn't melt through the shell, which made it cleaner to eat. Boyfriend's first time trying Beard Papa's, and he loved it so much he ate the last cream puff without me!! There are banners outside but can be easily missed if you don't know what you're looking for. I came in eager to try the croissaint taiyaki and was a bit let down being presented with a flat taiyaki that looked like it just lost a battle with Obi Wan Kenobi on Mustafar.
