This place is great!!!! A bit of a long wait time, but I think it is worth it. My family got a bag of Cocohodo pastries and I tried two taiyakis - Oreo and Red Bean! Prices kind of on the cheaper side. Cocohodo pastries- not a big fan of walnuts but provided a good crunch! Kind of tastes like taiyaki just with an extra crunch and smaller. Oreo Taiyaki- tastes good, can't really taste the white Oreo paste part though, but it kind of tastes like a chocolate taiyaki. Red bean Taiyaki- pretty good! It was a good Taiyaki. It's the addict thing. When I m visiting S Cali with CocoHodo nearby, I got to check it out and plan it so I can bring back some to the states. This one is located inside the market, way at the back by the Paris Baguette. At the time if visit, we were greeted by elder lady with a sample hodo that was still hot. What a nice gesture. They have bags or boxes and also had signs for frozen and day old and two days old at discount. I did get a large bags of two days old on top of fresh ones for gift. One thing for sure. I can still remember when I first tried red bean Taiyakis as a kid, and I've loved them ever since. Unfortunately, not all Taiyakis you find these days are the same, with all the variations of waffle shells.... now with the croissant versions.... and fillings also with different textures and sweetness. I do like their Cocohodos, but when they were at the previous spot inside the Zion market, for some reason, their Taiyakis seemed to have a more cakey texture, and the red bean fillings were a bit too sweet. However, they are now located in the food court section of the store, and the Taiyakis are now pretty darn amazing! ... but it needs to be made to order, fresh and hot off the grill, and eaten soon after. You just need to be careful as the fillings will be scorching hot! I'm amazed at how the Taiyakis are now a bit different than when they were selling them at the previous spot. The waffle is perfectly crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and the filling is actually really yummy! I so love the red bean and custard Taiyakis. Ok, the fillings are perhaps a bit sweeter than I would like, but overall, they're really excellent and so remind me of my childhood days. The elderly gentleman manning the counter was also very nice and was the one who made our Taiyaki order from scratch. This dessert place is conveniently located inside Zion Market next to Paris Baguette. They offer 5 taiyaki for $9.99 which is a great price for the amount you get. You can choose from 5 flavors: custard, taro, red bean, cheddar, and nutella. They also have some hot and cold drinks like tea and coffee. The service was great, the cashier was really nice and explained that there would be around a 10 minute wait for the items. This was no problem at all since I just browsed the market while waiting. The shop's location makes it very easy to walk around the market and come back when everything's ready. The taiyaki is served a paper to-go box with a handle. There is a lot of seating closer to the food court area, so you can take the dessert home or enjoy it there. A bag of 10 pieces is $7. We saw they had a fridge of kokonut coconut pudding for $10.99 each and a freezer for dipping dots. We came for the walnut pastries but saw they have taiyaki now too. We opted to try their taiyaki - the pastries that's shaped like a fish and you can choose taro, red bean, custard, nutella or cheese for the filling. Their taiyakis are crunchy on the outside, soft and hot on the inside and has a mochi like texture when you bite into it. Just perfect. I used to go to somi somi when I crave taiyaki but this place is even better. And they have a cute cake box made especially for these taiyakis so that they stay crispy. They were 5 for $9.99. So... what is this place, exactly?!??? Stumbled onto here because gals and I had lunch at a place nearby and they wanted 85Degrees for the kids. I didn't get anything at 85 since I practically live very near to one so had my fair share. Instead, I prefer to be on the lookout for other places, especially less hyped ones. This one caught my eye! On the way to the restroom, as a matter of fact. lol!!! This is inside Zion Market (Asian grocery store). Head for the restroom, and you'll not miss it... Free samples got the best of me. Lady said to try one. So I tried a tiny slice the size of a fingernail, and I was like - OH WOW... So what is this walnut pastry exactly? Well, this is how best I can explain: looks like a walnut, but is actually a "cake" inside has a walnut inside has the most smoothest, awesome flavored red bean. the outside cake is soooo soft they are individually wrapped in some kind of paper to keep it fresh. how fresh? I went cheap and bought the day-old 30 pack for about $10.25. Fresh ones are $12.95. She said the fresh ones are much, much better since they are warm. But I went cheap, and they were still very good. Verdict - the day-old 30-pack lasted me exactly 8 days! Let's see, that comes out to about 4 per day. Yeah, that's about what I ate per day. The first two days were still just as good as the day I bought it. Then I put them in the refrigerator Day 3. Still tasted good days 3 to 5. By Day 6, the cake batter started to get a little hard, but not too much. It was not until Day 8 that it got harder. If this came from another bakery, I think those things would get hard by Day 2 or 3. So I don't know what they did to make these things last so long, but they were so worth it! It's like eating bite-sized pieces of cake, and no frosting needed. Two of my co-workers who I made try thought they were chocolate filling. It's red bean (I think...) So if you want to try a different pastry/dessert than the typical cakes out there, try this! Go for the sample first, even. read more

Today I bought a bag of hodo guaja (round walnut with red bean paste snack). The lady had a bag for $16, but it was labeled as yesterday and another bag (forgot the price, but it was less than $16) labeled the day before yesterday. She told us she had new ones made for today, so we told her we will take a bag. Found out that if you wanted the ones made today, it cost $20, which wasn't advertised. Why would you want to buy stale and old snacks and why would a store owner sell that. The snack is good, but I wouldn't recommend this place. I got the shaved bingsoo (shaved ice) and Cocohodo walnut pastries~ It was actually so good! Initially when I first tried the shaved ice it was nice and creamy. It wasn't too sweet which I really enjoyed~ What made the shaved ice much sweeter was the red bean in it with the mochi. I loved the texture of the mochi and shaved almonds in it but YOU HAVE TO TRY THE SHAVED ICE WITH THE COCOHODO PASTRY. It is honestly the best way to eat these. I advise you eat the bingsoo right away without putting it in the freezer though because the shaved ice loses its fluffiness. So eat right away! read more

Okay, hodoo gwaja = walnut snack?? is a beloved old timers (don't get offended old people~I, for one am an old person) snack but Cocohodo has made it hip & new again. ***FYI - Chun An, Korea is the birth place for hodoo gwaja/walnut pastry. Chun An is known for their walnuts and a local lady (Mrs. Cho) wanted to make something with the walnut to represent her town & Korea. So she invented the hodoo gwaja in 1934. Ever since then, it became the most beloved snack to get when you're driving down the highways (it's sold at almost all rest stops) in Korea (or just for anytime actually~). Cocohodo make these little round walnut cuties and they're made to order so freshness is guaranteed. They offer other baked goods (waffles & macarons) and drinks as well. **this location is inside the Zion market. I don't know if they have the full cafe menu at this location since this is the only Cocohodo location that is not a cafe/stand alone. We usually get the large counts (you can shave off couple of cents per pastry when you buy in large quantities) but they don't last long in our household. My in laws love these and we usually get them the largest box (84 pieces). They keep the extras in the freezer and thaw them over night and they're as good as new! I had ordered 3 large boxes for my church function recently and they wrapped and kept them warm inside the insulated boxes. From ordering them to pick up was easy and the service was pleasant. So go and try the walnut pastry~ it's somewhat of a comfort food for me because it takes me back to my childhood when I eat them. This is my go-to if I am in or around Zion Market on Irvine Boulevard. They specialize in a walnut and red bean cake that is gorgeous! The cake is basically made of ground walnuts and is in the shape of a walnut. It is filled with a really smooth, and not too sweet red bean paste, and a whole walnut in the center.
