I'd round up to 3.5 stars. We arrived on time for our 730 pm resy, only to be told that our table still had guests dining. We were told to wait at the bar. I proceeded to ask how long the wait would be since it sounds like other yelpers had this issue too. They kept saying oh it will be quick since they're on dessert. Nope, apparently the table was just hanging out so they put us in a corner table meant for 3 people or less. We waited about 15 min for this corner table. I sat at a chair that they pulled up in the corner and every waiter who walked by ran into or kicked my chair so that was a really annoying part of the meal. Overall, I thought the food was ok. Pricey for what you get. We got the oysters, bluefin tuna, quail, ribeye steak, cabbage, and both the desserts. The oysters and tuna were good. The quail had an interesting seasoning on it. Didn't love it but didn't hate it. The steak was the star of the show. Super tender but also lots of fat so beware. We only ordered the cabbage cause the waiter said we needed a veggie.....only for it to come out covered in bacon LOL so yeah so much for a "veggie". The basque cheesecake was the better dessert. The "pandan" tres leches tasted nothing like pandan and we joked that it tasted more like the milk from fruity pebbles cereal. Honestly I was disappointed cause the meal wasn't cheap. read more

Phenomenal Service. Unique Fusion of Flavors and Techniques. Really love the atmosphere while they have the tabletop lights on, and the open kitchen/hearth is a very nice touch (and not loud as in some other restaurants). My take though, is that overall, the dishes while beautifully thought out and often times daring in their flavor fusions, don't always hit the mark, sometimes the dishes feel like they are missing a flavor, or other times they feel like hey have one too many flavors. Additionally, because so many of the dishes are hearth focused, it can sometimes feel like the predominant flavor is char. That being said, again, I think the service is phenomenal. The flavors are adventurous and challenges status quo. For that, I would give it 5 stars expect... the high price tag. For the price, you expect near perfection to feel like you got the value out of the meal. And in this case, some of the imperfections (including the dreadful lighting when the tabletop lights are taken away for the main courses), are cause for 4 stars on value-alone. For the dishes, we had the... - Raw Oysters (which came with hot sauce) - I personally think the hot sauce masked the Raw Oysters Sauce - Blue fin - I liked this one, but my parter did not as much - Albacore - Amazing, probably our favorite dish of the night, very freshly sourced. - Cornbread - Probably our second favorite dish. It came with three spreads, one cheese based and two jams. We only really loved the strawberry jam and think they could have just gone with that one. - Endives - A very interesting dish -- not for anyone who doesn't like the bitter endive! - Shrimp - It was so well done -- and simple. You could even eat the shell! It was a lot of Calabrian chili powder though. - Tarta de Queso - Surprisingly, this was not my favorite dessert, but I am glad I gave it a try as it is a Basque specialty! Came last night after making last minute reservations and surprisingly made it happen. The ambiance is super chill and great for a dinner with friends or a dinner date. Food was above average, I had the ribeye and my date had a scallop dish and a beautiful salad, we both had crispy rice w tuna for a starter. Drink menu is also pretty banging, I had a mocktail and date had some sort of gin build and she loved it. Will be back to try other offerings! read more

Went here in March for my birthday. 5 stars all around. This visit not so much. I feel like I'm in an episode of Honey I Shrunk the Menu. Serving sizes are not what they once were and they sharing the same. The pork chop was so fatty. On top of it, the service was kind of lackluster. Peach dish was probably the biggest rip off. I went to Baso a few weeks ago and this place still has me thinking about their food! There wasn't any dish that we've tried that we didn't love from here - their food was like a work of art! First off, let me start off by saying...Book yourself a seating at the Kitchen Counter. You can watch the chefs cooking and prepare your food as you eat. It's a fun experience! We started off with the Bluefin - let me tell you, the flavor profile on this was out of this world. The bluefin just melted in your mouth, but yet the crispy rice gave it a nice crunch. The chili on there gave it a nice kick, not too spicy and yet the lemon zest on top gave a nice touch of acidity. It just all merried so well together. We also tried their grilled oysters, bread service and their beets. Let me tell you...they're all excellent choices. Can't go wrong with either one of them, but if you can...try them all. The grilled oysters were nice and garlicky, only complaint was that i wish they were bigger and more of them. But don't sleep on the bread service and think you're getting just some boring bread and butter...nope! The buns are freshly baked and you can taste that freshness with a hint of that sharp manchego cheese that is baked in with the bread. The butter is where it's at - it was so nice and creamy and well seasoned. This is not your typical butter! Beets - now hear me out...you may see the word beets and think you will skip out, but do yourself a favor and try it. Even my hubby whose not a beet person tried it and was pleasantly surprised. The beets were dar I say, grilled? Almost candied like because they were sweet. It came with some cultured cream and that was so heavenly. I wish it came with some kind of chip, toast...or something to help me lap up all that cream with the beets. I will say though, this dish is a bit sweet to my surprise, but still very good. For the main dish, we had their ribeye. This ribeye was the crème de la crème! It was perfectly grilled and has a nice crust on the outside but yet so tender and flavorful on the inside. They topped the steak off with the burnt onion sauce and that was gold. This was probably the best ribeye I've had in a very long time. But warning, on the menu it is noted it's $8 an oz, so it's not like you get to choose how many ounces you want and they will prepare it. The steak has already been sized and cut in the back. So for that night when we went, all they had left was a 17oz steak. To end the night off, you know we had to try their desserts. My sister and I shared a peach koji pavlova. The pavlova had crisp edges and chewy on the insides almost like a toasted marshmallow, if you will, but better. It was topped with a lemon sorbet ice cream which gave it a nice tart and acidic flavor. My hubby had a carijillo as his dessert- which was a coffee liqueur drink - he needed a drink to wake himself up after all that we ate! Overall it was such a great experience and had such a great night out. This is definitely a great date night spot. But one thing to note, their menu does change from time to time based on on what they have, so check ahead of time. read more

Aside from a minor Ventilation issue, this was probably the most elegant and sophisticated meal of 2024. We started off with a neat cocktail and wine made from grapes salvaged from the fires of Napa (accompanied by the sweet music of the 90s). Next, our waitstaff member explained the menu to us and how it looks, allows for allergy substitutes (for some but not all allergies), and the suggestion of how to "course-it" for an enjoyable meal experience. Without much pause, we ordered PEI raw oysters and they came with interesting accoutrements. We are not fans of accoutrements on raw oysters, because oysters from different parts of the world have their own identity in taste but this was different: pepper cocktail sauce and dashi vinegar. Surprisingly, this didn't take away from the oyster experience! Then, we opted for the Caviar service from Siberia (sturgeon) and it was an interestingly accompanied by stropwaffel with Baso caramel. I thought that it was a neat twist, but it took away from the taste of the caviar, but WOW the amount of caviar for this price is nearly impossible! Switching to land raised food, we went for the Venison tartare that came on an egg yolk base and some scrumptious toast. Probably some of the best tartare I've had this year. Since I have an allergy to pork products and food, I was thrilled to see lamb bacon mixed with cabbage! This was both delicious and filling, but we packed half it up to eat later- more food was on its way! As marketed, the belle of Ball was the crab mixed with rice, shredded, and served in a delicate crab shell with a hollandaise sauce foam. This was my least favorite, because tasted more hollandaise than crab or rice. The presentation, however, was top notch. Alas, we didn't have any stomach space for dessert and only one option for offered: house made cheesecake. I'm sure it would have been beautiful but my stomach convinced me to decline. What a great place to spend an anniversary with my wife. From the moment we were greeted walking in the door by the staff we had such a wonderful experience. The staff were extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and made great recommendations. Fortunately we took them because we were amazed with how good the food was. There were so many little touches to include the small lights on the table to read the menus that made you feel like you were in a such a great spot. An interesting dining experience! For being open only a short period of time, Baso has an air of long establishment and confidence within its staff, especially the chefs! It's somewhat hard to find, being that the letters are small and unlit. When you turn off Shepherd, you should immediately look for valet ($10) on the left before the restaurant. If you passed the bubble tea place Feng Cha, you've gone too far! The interior is small, maybe seats 50... dimly lit with no windows, and an intimate setting. Decor is to a minimum and the feel is minimalistic and raw. No tablecloths. Completely open kitchen concept--almost feels like you're in the kitchen itself, with all the chefs doing what they do best. I personally wouldn't say this place is kid friendly, though I did see several parties with babies and toddlers--those moms will NOT give up their date night, and rightfully so! The service is great. It's not a traditional style of ordering at a typical restaurant. You order all items in advance and they course it out to you in a reasonably spaced amount of time. On the menu, the items are generally smallest to largest. For every 2 people, I would order 4-6 smaller "appetizer" plates and one large protein plate. Here's what we had: Scallops--marinating in a citrus blend with curry-like Indian spices, these slices scallops are bursting with flavor! Venison--tartare consistency with smoked egg yolk and a sunflower "butter" to top a few slices of crispy bread. This was absolutely delicious! Potatoes--crispy pieces with a perfectly salted cheese made from a beautiful Italian cheese that they used to create an amazing sauce. A table favorite! Lettuces--pretty large salad! Very fresh, super light dressing. Maitake mushrooms--Smokey sauce, very distinct taste. I could've sworn the server said it had a coffee infusion, which I would believe based on the taste. I loved this dish myself, but my husband thought the smoked flavor was overwhelming. Quail--excellent flavor! Crisp skin with a slightly seeet note from pomegranate. Flounder--perfectly prepared. Loved the flavor with the pecans and brown butter. It wasn't fried as much as a layer to coat the fish. Went well together. Very large portion to split between 2! Tarta de queso--perfection! This is like a home style, European cheesecake. An excellent portion for 2 people to share. Delectable! This food was absolutely amazing, probably one of my favorites in Houston. The food flavors were all unique and exquisite while the cocktails were well balanced. We started out with the bluefin tuna for an appetizer and that was incredible! It had a hash brown potato that the tuna was on top of and it complimented each other very well. I would definitely recommend getting this dish! We also had the venison which was great too! My only complain was that the bread was too hard (it was intentional) but that is a personal preference. The venison had wonderful flavors when eaten alone. We had the martini and robot raff which were so smooth. The martini was the best I've ever had, it was very smooth and did not taste like straight up booze. The robot raff was well balanced also. Next we had was the pork chop coupled with potatoes. These dishes were incredible. The potatoes were spicy and lacked salt which the pork chop had. The flavors were all so settling, I loved these dishes. We will definitely be back!! read more

I was lucky to attend the soft open menu tasting as well as the bar bites and cocktails menu tasting. Our server was very knowledgeable and walked us through the available options. This was soft open so I was pleased to see so much variety. Every bite was a delight. The crispy rice with tuna was crunchy and chewy with a mountain of flavorful tuna and roe. I smiled over every taste. Our second favorite was the quail. Sweet and savory with a hint of apples maybe? The tiny bones were nibbled clean. We tasted the shrimp and potatoes as well as the sour dough. Whew wee, I can't say enough about the skills of the chefs. The shrimp were barely cooked and perfection. Swimming in a saucy broth that we sopped up with the grilled bread, the potatoes were salty and crisp. Perfection with the amazing wine and cocktails. We came to Baso with a group of 6 or 8 for a Birthday dinner. I had heard the buzz going around town about the newly opened live fire Basque inspired restaurant and was excited to have a reason to try it out. Baso has one of those stealthy locations where if you blink driving by, you're going to miss it. They're straight across the street from Squable, and next door to Reata. They have a valet lot for $10, or just uber on over to skip the headache. The interior is small and low lit romantic, there's maybe 50 seats? I also noticed there are no windows in the dining area, which isn't noticeable while dining, but weird now that I'm thinking about it. One wall of the dining room is their massive open kitchen. If you're facing that direction while eating, you get quite the show, and get to watch these chefs hard at work prepping, firing, plating, etc. The overall decor is minimalistic and raw. Concrete, bare tables, fire light from the kitchen licking the walls, it works. The service was friendly and prompt. They did a great job of walking us through each and every option, gave their opinions on them, and shared suggestions regarding portions. The menu is a bit vague, so helpful servers are essential here. It's also important to note that they seem to prefer that you order all items in advance and they then course it out to you as it's prepared. Since we were a larger group, and all excited about our first visit, we ordered nearly the entire menu. Here's what we had: (pictures also attached) -Bread Service: Fresh baked bread with a delightful butter. -PEI Oysters: Sweet delicate briny raw oysters accompanied with little pipettes of sauces. -Scallops: They came in a bowl marinating in a citrus and curry flavored liquid. -Venison (tartare): I LOVE venison tartare, and this was no exception. The blend of herbs, spices, and egg yolk added to the raw venison was exceptional. -Lettuces: The servers were gushing about this one, claiming it to be the greatest salad they've ever had. It was very fresh and lightly dressed with a salty citrus dressing. -Maitake (mushrooms): Smoky earthy fire cooked mushrooms. -Quail: Butterflied whole quail glazed in some type of pomegranate sauce and roasted in the fire. - Kegani Crab: This was a miss for me, possibly because it was $120 for this one plate and held maybe 3-4 spoonfuls of rice mixed with sweet sweet crab meat. Don't get me wrong, it was tasty, and I understand it's a pain to pick crab meat and Carolina Gold rice is a big heirloom deal, but is it $120? Came across as a gimmick. If they put blue crab meat in that dish, I doubt many would notice the difference... -Shrimp: Served whole, fire roasted, and covered in red chili dust. Smoky, shrimpy, spicy bites, which include the head and tail. -Ribeye: This was our big protein plate (there's a range of lbs. you can order so pricing is broad) and this did not disappoint. Perfectly cooked live fire ribeye drizzled with a burnt onion jus. -Tarta de queso: Cheesecake of sorts. Very tasty and not oversweet. Pandan Tres Leches: Tres leches cake but it tastes like fruity pebbles, in the best way possible. Overall I had a great experience eating at Baso and loved almost all the dishes we tried. The chefs came to Houston with some serious Michelin experience under their belt, and they've made a good effort transferring that experience to the Houston consumer. If I were to complain about one thing, it's pricing. $120 crab plate aside, the overall menu averages about $20 per small plate appetizer and anywhere between $58 - $100+ for each entree. These are smaller portions but with serious attention to detail, focusing on rare ingredients, execution, and creativity, but I'm just not sure John Q Houston will connect the dots to justify the cost. That being said, if your price point expectations are properly set, and you're looking for something truly unique in town, I would highly suggest giving Baso a try. read more

I won't begin by describing the restaurant as other reviewers have already done so. I'll begin with the TAPAS. Shrimp with garlic and chili was hands down the best shrimp dish I've ever had. They were juicy, spiced just right, and full of flavor. The bread service was real Spanish texture bread (confirmed by Spaniard at the table), we ordered more. The papas Bravas were simply delicious, crispy and tasty sauce. LARGE PLATE. We had the flounder and it was soooo good! Loved the pecans. Three of us shared it! The open kitchen is gorgeous and the menus have a homemade feel. I like the way the ink feels embossed and the way the date is stamped at the top. Food 2/5: We came in with much too high of expectations and the experience was underwhelming. We didn't want to finish half of our small plates, there was no "discovery" or "oh wow". We only took one or two bites from half of them that we ordered. After our initial experience and without being wowed by our first few dishes, we didn't want to spend anymore time or energy on their larger plates, so we ordered the tarta de queso to go. The tarta de queso is worth getting; they said it's their only authentic Basque recipe. (Don't hate me, but I personally prefer BADOLINA's version. I am kinda obsessed with it). Service 2/5: Pre-sit down, the staff was borderline deceptive, not accommodating, and lacked warmth or personal touch. I called in and asked for any open reservations and they told us there were "none". I replied that I saw there were openings on Resy and they told me, "I don't think so", I said "I do see them, though". Then, she said "what time? Just book there". I asked if I could please book over the phone, then she sighed and asked when I wanted the reservation for. On the phone we were told we could come early for a waitlist, so we came in over an hour early around 7:15pm. In the waiting area there was no where to sit and we were told the empty bar seats were for reservation only. The seats were open for 40 minutes of our wait time and were still open when we set down. We were told a table was ready for us several times in the last 30 minutes we were waiting, but then they did not seat us. After inquiring about what was happening, they told us they would seat us after or on our original reservation time because they had a big table and didn't want to stress out their server. I asked that they please go ahead and seat us (since we had been standing for over an hour). We sat down at 8:40pm. Once we sat down the service was good - frequent checking ins, food pacing felt perfect, continually refilled water, folded napkins when off to the restroom, and positive energy. But, the pre-sit down experience was so frustrating we honestly could not enjoy the dining experience. The Bar 1/5: It has 4 seats. After standing at bar for 15 min, bartender never greeted us or asked us what we wanted. He was the only one making drinks for the whole restaurant. I am on a zero proof journey and once I asked for the bartenders attention I was offered "strawberry lemonade" as an option for zero proof. When I asked if there were any craft zero proof options, I was told they don't have zero proof alcohol to work with. My dining mate ordered a beer and I was never offered or given water. For the restaurant: - Misleading and deceptive communication can ruin an entire experience - Candles at the tables would warm the atmosphere up - Please prioritize your guests better; the way you handled your 8 top situation when it came to handling other guests was very dissapointing - If you are charging $14 for bread service, I expect bread made in-house. It would be lovely to have something fresh baked over the live fire - like a super fermented bread inspired by talo. Having local bakery bread and a butter/cheese you can get from HEB was sad to see on your menu. - Claiming this is more affordable and friendly compared to big fancy tasting menu's is totally misleading to a Houston market (ref to marketing/promotion claims). Every dish I tried was missing just a little something: the lettuce, not quite enough vinegar or pepper; the okra, a bit of cream to thin out the sauce; the grilled oysters, some slivers of the darkest chocolate would have taken it up just the right notch; and so it goes. All would have been forgivable, not at these prices. We had very high expectations for Baso after friends raved about it and it became recommended by the Michelin guide. We had a 6:30 reservation on Valentine's Day and were seated right away. The service was top notch the entire experience, no notes. The food menu is small but mighty, the wine list is large but mighty. For food, we ordered the bluefin, cornbread, chicory Caesar, and pork chop. Every dish was plated beautifully (can we talk about the dinnerware? Obsessed with the plate the cheesecake was served on) and interesting. We couldn't stop eating the pork chop. Seriously. We were so full with 1/3 left and couldn't stop. Had to top it off with the Basque cheesecake, and the ice cream made in house sounded too good to pass up (we got the honey crème fraiche). One of the top dining experiences in Houston! read more

The prices were too expensive to reflect the quantity and quality of the food. We got the Amberjack and that was well flavored. The bluefin Tuna was overpowered by the chili oil and needed salt and seasoning. The bread was good but at $16 but worth it. The shrimp was okay. They suggest you eat the shell but it didn't add to the dish. Also it was difficult to remove it from the shell and the portion was about 3 shrimp halved. The porgie was okay in some sections but not super flavorful. The char was a bit much in some spots and actually tasted burnt. The Basque cheesecake was more of a burnt taste at some spots versus a nice toasted caramelized flavor. Everything about our visit to Baso was on point. At 6 PM on a Saturday parking was available in their lot which was nice. We booked our seats at the kitchen counter which runs most of the length of the restaurant. They've done a great job of putting the kitchen front and center with a great view of the action going on. Watching the flow of the kitchen makes a meal more interesting in my opinion. We had stopped at Eight Row Flint for a cocktail before dinner, so opted for a bottle of wine at Baso. Our server directed us to a nice, reasonably priced French Sauvignon Blanc that went very well with our menu selections. Service throughout the meal was attentive but not overbearing. We started with the excellent bread service that is sometimes Sourdough, but on this night was "Baso Buns" with manchego cheese butter. Addictively good, especially when you are hungry at the beginning of a meal. For starters we enjoyed the grilled oysters and the scallop and bluefin plates from the raw section of the menu. I like how you can order the oysters by the "each" - we chose 3 and they were excellent. Just cooked through with a very tasty green garlic sauce. The bluefin Tuna over crispy rice might have been my favorite bite of the night. very flavorful, and the crispy rice gave that nice texture to accompany the tartare. The scallop dish was also very good, but interesting. I didn't know if I would like the iberico lardo that was prevalent on the dish, but it added a little smoky flavor and didn't take away from the scallop taste. We then had the "Lettuce" salad. It certainly was a large pile of lettuce. For $18 this could have easily fed a party of 4. It was dressed perfectly so that the dressing didn't overpower the 5 different lettuces on the dish. We liked this dish a lot, but could not finish it. For our entrée we selected the butterflied whole snapper. Normally we don't order whole fish so we don't have to deal with the bones, but this was butchered well and we dealt with very little bones. The fish was flavorful and the anchovy sauce provided a nice acidic punch. For dessert we had the signature Basque cheesecake. Excellent end to the meal. Thanks to Jorge for excellent service and to the entire staff for an excellent and entertaining meal. We will return to try out some of the more meat forward dishes. One interesting thing to note is that the steaks are priced by the ounce. I assume this means if you can order smaller cuts. read more

Found Baso on a Google search for new spots in The Heights. Booked a reservation for mid day yesterday and then realized that would be too early due to homecoming for my kid. So I canceled the reservation and went back into the Resy app to find another time. Next available time was 8:45 which was too late so I did not rebook. All this took me less than 10 minutes. Now I am charged a $50 cancelation fee. Ridiculous. A new spot I will not try. read more

Very interesting place. Yes, expensive and full of flavors. Cool place and enjoyable atmosphere. Bread/Baso buns with manchega butter - so good, glad they only serve 4 rolls in the order. Bluefin was good. Shrimp, yes you can and really have to eat shell since the meat doesn't separate from the shell. These would have been better if these were meatier/jumbo sized shrimps. Lettuce was ok - too bitter for me but others didn't mind. Beets were so delicious- might have been favorite from the night. 16oz ribeye - salty and was an ok piece of meat - I like em thicker but was still good. Dessert was the cheesecake- light and not overly sweet. We enjoyed. Unique place with tasty flavors. read more

Came here with another couple on a Saturday night. We arrived about 15 minutes late for our 7pm reservation because we got caught behind a train but our table wasn't ready for us until after 7:45. The bar was open and we were able to order a drink at the bar while we waited. Upon being seated at our table they gave us complimentary glasses of prosecco which was a nice gesture. The restaurant space is lovely and service was mostly very good though the food was very slow to come out. My 3 star review really boils down to the fact that I really did not enjoy the food. The one dish that I thought was great was the ribeye. The pork chop was heavily crusted and oddly sweet. The lettuces were just that, very very lightly dresses lettuces. Everyone was surprised when the venison came out and was tartare because the menu did not specify that. Didn't love the flavor on the quail. The dishes were also pretty small portion wise for the high price point. I know the reviews here have been mostly great, but this one just isn't for me. read more

Food was outstanding Service was good The Maitake dish was incredible. The venison dish was fantastic. My wife and I loved the lettuce dish. We also splurged on the A5, it was definitely worth it. And for dessert the S'mores and the Pavlova were a modern take on the classics, but excellent. My biggest issues were their signage and their parking. Also, the noise level was a little bit high for my taste. Besides that, everything was great!! read more

Love the build out. Feels minimal but also attention to detail inside. Really cool feel. The open kitchen is a nice touch. The food was well prepared and executed. Some items I went out on a limb to try and was pleased. This is one of those places to go and follow the lead of the chef! read more
