After searching for months for my new favorite Thai spot, this might become my go-to! Was very impressed with both the red curry and tofu and the green curry hot pot I ordered today, and the only reason why I haven't given Basil Thai 5 stars at the moment is I would like to try their other meals before I assess again. I loved how large their portions were (I seriously have enough leftovers for another day or 2) and the curries was very tasty and vegetables fresh. They even accommodated my request to keep the udon separate from the soup which I appreciated. Two downsides to the curry: the red curry we got had a layer of oil on top, which didn't look too appetizing and we had to spoon out and the curries are more on the "soupier" side rather than the rich, thick version I'm used to getting. With this Thai restaurant being so close to work, it was easy to go there when I got called back in for work. My signature disc is the woon sen, and I was pleasantly surprised with their rendition. This place is five stars all the way. SO much bang for your buck!! I love the idea of the individual hot pot soups. Each person can get their own soup and choose up to 8 toppings!!! They even let you pick two noodles so I chose both udon and regular ramen noodles. They do have some seafood options like mussels. The price is so affordable at $12 and all of us were super full at the end of the meal. I chose the Tom Kha soup and it was definitely a good choice. It is creamy with coconut milk. I'm only rating on the basis of the personal hot pots. Considering that we don't have the luxury of a more "typical" hot pot, this place fills the void that I think most people are searching for! The hot pots are customizable, from the broth base, protein/veggies and additional add-ons (make sure you add noodles). I really like the coconut milk (tom kah), Szechuan and kimchi bases! It's perfect for a cold or rainy day. The portion size is definitely enough for one person. They also have additional things on the menu, but I have yet to try. So far I've tried the red curry and panang curry here, which are both delicious! My friend has also ordered the kimchi hot pot but I didn't find it as good as the curry flavors offered. After you pick your broth, you can also select a meat choice and a variety of hot pot items. I always get the lamb with ramen, quail eggs, bamboo shoots, enoki mushrooms, etc. My favorite part is that it comes in a heated up pot so the food never gets cold (although I tend to burn my tongue a lot). For $16, I think it's pretty worth the fun experience. The unlimited rice with massive portions along with the drab interior felt familiar and comforting. So it's nothing to write home about and not fancy in the least bit. Its not even authentic Thai food and more like Chinese stir fry. But whatever it was, it was damn good and this place has a certain charm about it. The woman waitress there is so friendly and always working there. Second, I always get the make your own hot pot. They allow you to choose your meat. I always get the combo one with beef, lamb, and shrimp I think for $14 and share it with my friend. I've tried the 四川 one which is spicy and hot and the yellow curry one which is creamy and flavorful. I love both of them. I always always get ramen and udon, this is a must here. It's like always hot ramen and udon noodles! You get up to 8 toppings (including these noodles) and I always switch it up. I like the enoki mushrooms, spam, green leaf, and corn. The price for me is super cheap. If you don't get combo meat, it's around $9. Since combo is bigger than the other meat portions, I always split it and pay around $9 each including tip. They also have drinks, boba and tea, desserts, and dinner items, but I'm pretty sure they're famous for their hotpot. I will always 10/10 go again. I ordered Thai rice with shrimp and the rice was uncooked - it overall tasted a little old. First of all, this is not your standard, self-dip as you go type of hotpot. Each pot is individual, and arrives precooked with a mini flame underneath. PSA: Do not order the Kimchi broth hotpot thinking that you'll be eating kimchi jigae. Because that's what I did. It will taste like gochujang (fermented soybean paste) + broth. No hints of kimchi at all. Slightly disappointing. But other than that -- everything else was great!! Arguably, the best broths for hotpot are the Szechuan and Tom Yum. Szechuan has tongue tingling peppercorns, and is quite spicy -- watch out! They offer combo hotpots. But I like the option of selecting 8 add-ons to include in your hotpot. You can choose from various vegetables, protein balls and noodles. They also bring a complementary container of rice per table. I always get the Pad Thai or Pad See Ew with chicken and bring Tupperware with me because I know the portion sizes are large enough that I will have leftovers. The broth wasn't spicy to me but was too spicy for my boyfriend's tastes so I would be careful if you're not used to spice! The food was sooo good. I added all of the meats possible with favorite vegetables. There's definitely enough to fill up one person. I wouldn't recommend sharing UNLESS you really love rice (which neither of us really ate much of, it's complimentary) then you could definitely share and get full. There's a fire underneath the pot that eventually goes out. I would recommend using the separate bowl to cool your food or else you burn your tongue like me! Rooted in the small strip mall right next the the HEB I used to frequent for my weekly shopping trips, the place was empty except for a couple of tables. Because I'm a boring person, I ordered the hotpot with the broth I'm most comfortable with, the clear broth. I'm sure this just means chicken broth or something. I got it with the beef and down the menu I go circling my eight veggies. You know that fragrant smell of a hotpot restaurant? Yea, this place smells wonderful. So one thing I was expecting was for all the ingredients to come out raw and I would just plop them into the pot of boiling broth as I chose. Nope! When the hotpot came out, everything was already cooking in the pot. Even the noodles, which is a serious faux pas. You know what went down; soggy noodles by the end of the meal. I know they probably do it so people aren't spending hours eating hotpot, but c'mon man. I also ordered the fresh and frozen tofu just to compare. And honestly, I couldn't tell the difference as I felt I just got two orders of frozen tofu; not a good thing. But don't let this review get you down in the dumps, the hotpot was pretty good otherwise. The broth was flavorful and the meat, napa, enoki, and fish balls were all good. Overall, I had a pretty standard hotpot. However, you do get what you paid for. The ingredients coming out cooked is a big turnoff and you can tell the ingredients aren't fresh. The flavor was nice and not too overpowering that you couldn't taste the ingredients. They do limit you to how many add ins you can get, but that's not usually an issue since they are personal pots. I kind of miss the experience of cooking your own ingredients in the hot pot (which Little Sheep had), but it is nice to be able to eat everything right away. I looked at the photos for Basil Thai and saw some hot pot looking things and then I got interested. Basically, aside from regular Thai dishes, you can get Thai inspired hot pot. You can customize your hotpot with the type of broth you want, meats, and goodies. My favorite broth bases are Mala Spice, Thai Green Curry, Panang Curry, and Lemon Grass. All of these go great with rice, but I also add udon too. I have yet to try the other dishes, since every time I come here I get the custom hot pot, but one day I'll give them a go. It doesn't seem to get too busy here, which I don't understand why, but I do wish for this place to stay in business for a long time!
