Absolutely YES and come taste the amazing cuisine of Basil Thai! Came across an Instagram post and wanted to give it a try! We were greeted immediately when we entered, seated in a booth, and advised to access the menu thru the posted QR code. My friend ordered the custom dry pot that had noodles, definitely has some spicy kick, but very flavorful! I ordered the custom hot pot w/ all the meat and seafood options, onion, bean sprouts, broccoli, mushrooms, with mild spice. The broth is very flavorful. We made our own entree by taking some of the dry pot and spoon the chicken broth and veggies atop, squeeze a lil lime juice and OMG it's a flavorful masterpiece! The only reason I didn't give Basil Thai 5 stars was because I thought the digital menu via the QR code was a little difficult to use and there are limited substitutions so definitely make sure you understand the spice levels.
I was recommended this place from a friend, so I had to try when I'm in Austin. When we got there it was empty, which was a surprise because we came in during lunch time on a weekend. This made me question whether it was actually good or not. Me and my boyfriend did the create your own hot pot. I got the thai yellow curry with beef & he got the combo tom yum. The both of the broths were really good. The thai yellow curry was rich & creamy. The tom yum was sweet. Both of the hot pot had plenty of meats & veggies. It was a good portion for the both of us & wouldn't recommend sharing. To place an order, you just scan the QR. We were able to get our food fairly quickly. Overall, it was good & I would most likely come back when I am in Austin.
This place is awesome! We have been here twice now and each time the food has been super delicious, with quick service and such kind hospitality from Rachel. The fried chicken, hot pot, and appetizers are all great. I'm so glad to have found this hidden gem, as the prices are reasonable and the quality of ingredients are very high. I would give Basil Thai 10 stars if I could. We will be back!
AUSTIN RESTAURANT WEEK #2 A pleasant find in the HEB shopping at Parmer and Mopac...this little gem was a hidden surprise. We might not have heard about Basil Thai had it not been for restaurant week. For $25 you received soup and fried chicken for 2-3 people. After eating my soup, I did not have much room for fried chicken. The soup was nicely prepared with perfectly cooked vegetables...just a little more than al dente but not super soft. We had enough leftovers for another meal. The soup was so flavorful and steaming hot, which came out on a square wood stand with a hibachi type top. You could literally see the fire underneath the metal bowl. My hubby, who is a meat and potatoes guy, loved the soup and the fried chicken. The white meat fried chicken was in nugget size servings with a superbly flavored crust. The manager served us with ourfood coming pretty quickly. Basil Thai had a large number to go orders with two Uber drivers picking up large orders. The environment in the restaurant was pretty laid back. Thumbs up on this restaurant...
I was really drawn to the concept and was super excited to try this place. However, I was a bit disappointed :( I ordered the spicy dry pot that had all the toppings chosen for you. You order by scanning a QR code on your phone and the interface was confusing for me. I thought noodles were included, so I ended up having to order some on the side later. The price was lowkey ridiculous, $1.50 for 1/4 of an instant noodle block. The dry pot itself was okay. It was around $20 with just meat and veg and the portion was pretty big, enough to feed two people. The only thing was that it was insanely salty. I brought the leftovers home and diluted it with some chicken broth and it tasted a lot better. The flavor was good and I liked the mala spice. The service was very nice. I would give it another try but maybe order differently. The thai tea however, was really good! It tasted like it was actually brewed and not powder.
Service was not bad. It was really busy when I went but we were able to get a table pretty quickly. We got the family combo meal to split and it was a lot of food. However some of the flavors/spices were kind of off. the dry noodles just felt like when you have random stuff in the fridge and you tossed it together. It had french fries, fish balls and all sorts of random things that didn't taste cohesive at all. However I really really enjoyed the fried rice, it's probably one of the best I've had. Perfectly spicy and fluffy.
We were looking for a Thai place that was somewhat northwest and picked this place. When I walked in, the fabulosa cleaning chemicals were over powering the restaurant to the point it made my nasals hurt, but touched it out since we were a party of 3. No paper menus, had to scan and order but had issues since our order was not submitted, waitstaff ended up placing our order. Prices are steep considering the amount of food you get. The dishes are different than we are accustomed too although the broths were not as heavy and rich which was a plus. I found the food ok, however the drunken noodle was dry, I'm use to it having it slightly saucy. The red curry hot pot was tasty but again, slightly different than what we're used to. The tom yum seafood hotpot was tasty but not what I was expecting and a very small hotpot but luckily we had enough to share. We all drove a minimum of 20 miles to this place and am not sure it's worth the distance driven. We have our favorites that we frequent in our areas. But it was worth a try.
I had seen that Basil Thai was like a personal hotpot place, but I had never gone before because I thought it was like a whole deal and probably expensive, and that I had to save the occasion for something special. But! It's actually so accessible and can pass for any meal. Not that the food isn't special, because it really is good, but that I had overhyped what the experience would be into something overwhelming, when that wasn't the case at all. You can do a build your own, but with all the options on the menu, I just decided to get one of their already curated bowls - the coconut milk (tom kah) with beef. I am guilty of just ordering anything that says it has coconut milk in it. And im often disappointed by not really being able to taste the coconut milk in it. But that wasn't the case here at all. Whenever I'm craving spicy coconut milk type broth, this is exactly what I want! The food comes out pretty quickly, and the servers are pretty friendly! I got the medium level spice for this dish, but I definitely feel like I could have gone for the hotter version. I was kind of scared because I was coming off of recovering from a slight cough, but definitely could have gone spicier. The noodles themselves were okay, it felt like your typical ramen noodles. But all the toppings were good, I loved the broccoli in it too. But I wish there was more beef inside, it didn't feel like it had much meat at all. But yeah the broth really sold it for me. I feel like I could have just drank it all, but I didn't want to be too puffy :(( I wish I packed it and took it home. That being said, the price was pretty reasonable imo.
THE BIG: Basil Thai is nestled in the Market at Parmer Lane strip mall. The windows have ads on it but also acts as a sun protector. Plenty of parking in the outdoor parking lot. THE BLACK AND WHITE: We ordered for pickup on a Friday afternoon and was able to get our order filled fast. The parking lot gets full quick so be aware of that. We ordered the dry pot with beef, curry hotpot with udon, tom yum soup, and lemongrass beef. The flavors were all sorts of funked up but maybe it's because I'm a traditionalist with food. The curry hotpot with udon was such a weird texture and I couldn't tell if i liked it. The best dish was the dry pot with beef in my opinion. Meat was nice and spiced and had a bevy of veggies. THE FINAL BAMBOO: We spent around $60 for 4 dishes, which is an incredible price, however the food fell flat for me and I think the only time I would try this again would be if I go in person and sit down.
basil thai never misses!! my friends and i come here all the time. the portions are humongous, especially the hot pots and dry pots, and i love the build-your-own options. there's a wide variety of veggies and meats to choose from, and the protein portions are always sooo generous. the prices are on the higher side, but one pot is easily big enough for two people to share. their mala dry pot is properly spicy and numbing without being too greasy or salty. the curries and lemongrass sizzling plates do lean a little sweeter, though. service is incredibly fast and super friendly, and i leave in a food coma state every single time :D
Oh come on. This was one of my goto places for Singapore vermicelli cuz it's my favorite. I went on Sunday and got platter of weirdly flavored spaghetti? Seriously? Had no curry flavor and the reheated wheat noodles were a weird texture. I won't be back and unfortunately I recommend you look elsewhere. If a place will sub out rice vermicelli with spaghetti? They've lost the plot. I'm so disappointed. There's enough other places around. Don't bother here.
First hotpot experience and this place really set the bar high. Was greeted by the sweetest lady as soon as we walked in. She let us know to scan to order and offered to answer any questions we had before submitting our order. Food was out so fast and presentation was mouthwatering. We decided to do the create your own hotpot with the Thai red curry and salt and pepper wings. The Hot pot was amazing. Not too rich and had depths of flavor. Loved being able to create my own unique flavor by being able to select the ingredients. The salt and pepper wings were not as great. The chicken was very salty and lacked flavor. Overall great experience definitely will be back anytime I'm in the ATX area. Loved the staff 10/10!
I love Basil Thai. I hadn't been in a while and I can honestly say I was a tad disappointed. I always used to order the red curry with shrimp. It comes in an oblong bowl and it's soupy. Soooo delicious! Well now they make you order online. I selected red curry. It came out like fried chicken pieces with red curry sauce mixed in! Clearly NOT what I was expecting. They told me the curry I wanted was on the old style booklet menus and not online. Needless to say I got what I wanted however still had to pay for an untouched and unwanted meal. Make sure you understand clearly what you're wanting before ordering.

This place used to be a crawfish/seafood restaurant but turned over to thai and I think it turned out for the better. It's a mom and pop restaurant so low music, tv in the background, not much thai decoration, seemed a bit too plain. Ordered chicken satay, love the crispy texture and it comes with a semi orange looking sauce with peanut sauce to dip and a side of vinegar sauce. Very good, awesome flavors, 5/5. I ordered thai pat combo with shrimp, chicken, beef, and I asked for low oil. Very tasty pat thai, Noodles soft, flavors on point, a bit too much salt but it was masked with a bit too much sugar so it was overly seasoned a bit too much. The crushed peanuts and you squeeze lime on top, it's good. 4/5 One of the best parts of the lunch is the individual hotpot. It comes with a bunch of items you can choose from, ramen noodles (I assume are from instant noodle bags), szechuan flavored broth so it's tangy and spicy, seafood bits, and a bowl of rice. I don't think the rice needs to be there, I would replace it a side of dipping sauce like shabu shabu style like a darker soy/hoisin sauce to cut thru the spicy broth. 3.5/5 read more

We came back for dine in last Saturday. It was our first time return. We do like to order Togo from them during the week. My kids missed their hotpot, my husband ordered his usual shrimp pad Thai, I tried shrimp dry pot. It was pretty spicy but the shrimps were really good. The owners were friendly! read more

Came here based on an Instagram post I saw! I knew I had to check it out.I love Thai food! And especially Hot Pots! There is plenty of parking and Fairly easy to get to.When you first walk in they greet you and you seat yourself.I noticed they had a lot of to go orders.And also a lot of regulars.the menu has make your own hot pot and a lot on the menu.Plus a lot curry options! I chose beef with vegetables and regular broth. The butter broth is super hot and you might want to start off with the regular which is spicy and just good! read more
Where have this place been all my life?! Like why am I just now discovering this gem! For all you ABG's and ABB's out there this is your place for a non-traditional hot pot craving. It's different in that you get YOUR OWN individual hot pot for $14. You choose a protein and up to eight different toppings - I kid you not this place will hook you up. Everything is already cooked when arrived at your table so all you have to do is eat your food. No more sharing with your nasty friends or worrying about your s/o eating all the fish balls or quail eggs. So far I've tried the sichuan (regular and with butter) and yellow curry broth and they're both flavorful and savory. I am excited to try more items on their menu. Parking is plentiful since it's located right next to Panda E and HEB. read more

Most hot pots are for sharing but at Basil Thai you can have it all! They have personalized hot pots so you can pick what you want and not have to think about if someone else likes that side or not. They have several different broths and lots of sides which is fantastic! There's several meat options as well. The personalized hot pot was $14 which is a fair price. Warning the spicy is actually very spicy! There's always parking in this area and the restaurant is never packed when I go so it's easy to get in and out. read more

The food here was very subpar and not cooked thoroughly. The vegetables were still hard and frozen in the meals, the spice was overly done, and the texture of the food in general was unappealing. The chicken egg rolls were not cooked inside, the yellow curry vegetables were not cooked, and the drunken noodles were a bad texture and not cooked properly. read more

Really good! I had the individual hotpot. My soup base was the yellow Thai curry, lamb meat, + 8 toppings (potato, fishball, meat ball, lettuce, mushroom, udon noodle mushroom, quail eggs, and another one I can't remember). I usually don't like curry, but this was delicious! Total, I spent $15.16 (not including tip). For a hotpot with 8 toppings, I think it was pretty good. Definitely hot since you have a mini stove with a fire under your pot. I went with a friend, so we each ordered our own, but I think we could've shared. However, that just means yummy leftovers! read more
For me, Thai food is considered Comfort food for me, so I was happy to try another Thai restaurant to see how they fare. With this Thai restaurant being so close to work, it was easy to go there when I got called back in for work. My signature disc is the woon sen, and I was pleasantly surprised with their rendition. Need to go container refilled with glass noodles toss with egg onion sprouts chicken. Unlike other wound sins, it wasn't over filled with vegetables but still quite tasty. My current favorite has the perfect flavor profile with vegetables; however, this version reminds me of the first time I had one soon which was loaded with egg rice noodles and chicken. Finally, I should have eaten here much sooner because the food and customer service are great. If you are close to North Parmer and in need of Thai food, you should give them a try read more
Went there for lunch with two friends and we all found this restaurant to be quite delicious for the price especially with the lunch specials. We had the deep fried pork rolls appetizer followed by the yellow curry for my friend as well as two eggplant dishes for me and the rest of us. Portions were good but not huge, but that's fine. This place is five stars all the way. SO much bang for your buck!! I love the idea of the individual hot pot soups. Each person can get their own soup and choose up to 8 toppings!!! They even let you pick two noodles so I chose both udon and regular ramen noodles. They do have some seafood options like mussels. The price is so affordable at $12 and all of us were super full at the end of the meal. I chose the Tom Kha soup and it was definitely a good choice. It is creamy with coconut milk. I let each person at the table try it and they all really enjoyed it as well. We had a table of 10 people and 2 kids and were seated promptly. Highly recommend this place. Will have to come back again when i'm in town! read more

So filling and delicious! I did the build-your-own personal hotpot and it came out to about 15 dollars post tax. The food came out fairly quickly for our group of 5, and they lit a fire under each pot to keep it hot. The soup bases were all very good - I had the yellow curry. You can choose up to 8 toppings (lot of options) and the portions were so generous. Love this place! read more
I've been wanting to go to this place for a month... finally, because it was raining and cold, we went. FOOD// We all ordered the combo which include rib eye beef, seafood, and lamb. Then we ordered in different broth: mala, thai yellow, and thai red curries. After that, you have choices of 8 from 20 for sides. First impression of broths - I really liked the thai curries. However, you get sick of it while you eat them. I liked the mala broth because it was spicy, but I am not fan of mala. They are a bit on oily side than you think **suggestions** TL;DR: I like thai yellow curry the most. If I would go again or if I were to suggest, pick these 8 for sides: spam, fish ball, onion, corn, quail egg, enoki mushroom, udon noodles, and black fungus. I added broccoli, but was not fresh at all. Also, the seafood was not fresh at all. I would get rib eye beef next time instead. Overall, the food was great - I didn't finish my pot. So, I took it home and had 2 more meals, LOL. ATMOSPHERE// There were only two parties when we entered, but it was almost full house when we left. It's comfortable and clean. SERVICE// They are super friendly and helpful. Could use more water refilled frequently instead of us keep asking.. :0 SURROUNDING// There is my favorite Korean restaurant right next to Basil Thai called, "Odaku" (this place closes on Sundays) SO WHAT, WORTH IT? I'm ALWAYS craving Basil Thai, because they not only offer such an enjoyable experience, but also their hot pots are really good and easily customizable! So far I've tried the red curry and panang curry here, which are both delicious! My friend has also ordered the kimchi hot pot but I didn't find it as good as the curry flavors offered. After you pick your broth, you can also select a meat choice and a variety of hot pot items. I always get the lamb with ramen, quail eggs, bamboo shoots, enoki mushrooms, etc. My favorite part is that it comes in a heated up pot so the food never gets cold (although I tend to burn my tongue a lot). For $16, I think it's pretty worth the fun experience. Although you can probably make it cheaper at home, Basil Thai gives you great variety without having to make tons in bulk at home, and you can always share a pot with someone else! read more

I like this place. I believe that the owners are in fact Chinese, which explains a lot because although I ordered the kaprow that had the usually Thai spices, it reminded me of Chinese stir fry. You get a lot for your money at this place. My partner and I ordered two dishes, Ka prow and veggie plate, which came with unlimited rice and we could have easily shared one dish. The unlimited rice with massive portions along with the drab interior felt familiar and comforting. So it's nothing to write home about and not fancy in the least bit. Its not even authentic Thai food and more like Chinese stir fry. But whatever it was, it was damn good and this place has a certain charm about it. Maybe it's the music that hasn't changed since the early 90s. After seeing pictures of the hotpot I definitely want to come back and try that! read more
This is my favorite place in all of Austin. The build your own hot pot is so different from anything else I have ever had - they allow you to customize and pick your own from a giant list of options. The soup base are also absolutely delicious...my favorite being the red Thai curry. It is phenomenal! AMAZING. I love this idea and concept of having personalized hotpots with amazing toppings and sauce. I think about this place all the time! First off, the environment is very authentic asian. The woman waitress there is so friendly and always working there. Second, I always get the make your own hot pot. They allow you to choose your meat. I always get the combo one with beef, lamb, and shrimp I think for $14 and share it with my friend. I've tried the 四川 one which is spicy and hot and the yellow curry one which is creamy and flavorful. I love both of them. I always always get ramen and udon, this is a must here. It's like always hot ramen and udon noodles! You get up to 8 toppings (including these noodles) and I always switch it up. I like the enoki mushrooms, spam, green leaf, and corn. The price for me is super cheap. If you don't get combo meat, it's around $9. Since combo is bigger than the other meat portions, I always split it and pay around $9 each including tip. They also have drinks, boba and tea, desserts, and dinner items, but I'm pretty sure they're famous for their hotpot. I will always 10/10 go again. Try this if you love hotpot and you're on an empty stomach because this will fill you all the way up! read more
First of all, this is not your standard, self-dip as you go type of hotpot. Each pot is individual, and arrives precooked with a mini flame underneath. PSA: Do not order the Kimchi broth hotpot thinking that you'll be eating kimchi jigae. Because that's what I did. It will taste like gochujang (fermented soybean paste) + broth. No hints of kimchi at all. Slightly disappointing. But other than that -- everything else was great!! Arguably, the best broths for hotpot are the Szechuan and Tom Yum. Szechuan has tongue tingling peppercorns, and is quite spicy -- watch out! They offer combo hotpots. But I like the option of selecting 8 add-ons to include in your hotpot. You can choose from various vegetables, protein balls and noodles. They also bring a complementary container of rice per table. Oh and must try, if you're a sucker for flavor and spice, the Dry Beef Hotpot. SO GOOD. read more

I thought Little Sheep was my hot pot soulmate for the longest time - until I had Basil Thai's. I got the Szechuan broth in regular while my boyfriend got the butter one. The broth wasn't spicy to me but was too spicy for my boyfriend's tastes so I would be careful if you're not used to spice! The food was sooo good. I added all of the meats possible with favorite vegetables. There's definitely enough to fill up one person. I wouldn't recommend sharing UNLESS you really love rice (which neither of us really ate much of, it's complimentary) then you could definitely share and get full. There's a fire underneath the pot that eventually goes out. I would recommend using the separate bowl to cool your food or else you burn your tongue like me! I wish I didn't graduate from UT because this place is sooo yummy!! read more

The place had a depressing vibe to it with dark dim lights and complete emptiness. The food was cooked with no love or effort. I ordered Thai rice with shrimp and the rice was uncooked - it overall tasted a little old. My bf ordered the drunken noodles with chicken and it took the hunger away from him - he took 4 bites in and couldn't touch his plate again. The food also came out in less than 5 minutes which is a bit alarming. You won't catch me back here again. read more

These individual hot pots have been around for a bit, but this curry base was definitely something new for me! The curry was really good and the toppings added up to be a lot of food, and they also give you white rice to eat with it. I recommend getting your favorite curry base for the make your own individual hot pot. read more
When the temperature drops, that urge for hotpot kicks right in. Looking at the menu, the selections are decent and the price is fantastic. As far as I know, this could be the last time the temperature drops below 60 in Austin, so this is an opportunity I cannot miss (drama queen). Rooted in the small strip mall right next the the HEB I used to frequent for my weekly shopping trips, the place was empty except for a couple of tables. Because I'm a boring person, I ordered the hotpot with the broth I'm most comfortable with, the clear broth. I'm sure this just means chicken broth or something. I got it with the beef and down the menu I go circling my eight veggies. You know that fragrant smell of a hotpot restaurant? Yea, this place smells wonderful. So one thing I was expecting was for all the ingredients to come out raw and I would just plop them into the pot of boiling broth as I chose. Nope! When the hotpot came out, everything was already cooking in the pot. Even the noodles, which is a serious faux pas. You know what went down; soggy noodles by the end of the meal. I know they probably do it so people aren't spending hours eating hotpot, but c'mon man. I also ordered the fresh and frozen tofu just to compare. And honestly, I couldn't tell the difference as I felt I just got two orders of frozen tofu; not a good thing. But don't let this review get you down in the dumps, the hotpot was pretty good otherwise. The broth was flavorful and the meat, napa, enoki, and fish balls were all good. Overall, I had a pretty standard hotpot. However, you do get what you paid for. The ingredients coming out cooked is a big turnoff and you can tell the ingredients aren't fresh. But if you need that hotpot fix for cheap, this is the place I would point you. read more
