I love their hot pots. I feel if you get noodles with the hot pot, you don't need to order extra rice but for the dry pot, it would be a good addition. The food comes out pretty fast and the owners are very nice and helpful. It can get busy and this place has been around for a while so you know it's good. The restaurant has good amount of seating and it appears clean. My only feedback is some of the dishes like the drunken noodles and the red curry is too oily for my liking.
This place is awesome! We have been here twice now and each time the food has been super delicious, with quick service and such kind hospitality from Rachel. The fried chicken, hot pot, and appetizers are all great. I'm so glad to have found this hidden gem, as the prices are reasonable and the quality of ingredients are very high. I would give Basil Thai 10 stars if I could. We will be back!
Absolutely YES and come taste the amazing cuisine of Basil Thai! Came across an Instagram post and wanted to give it a try! We were greeted immediately when we entered, seated in a booth, and advised to access the menu thru the posted QR code. My friend ordered the custom dry pot that had noodles, definitely has some spicy kick, but very flavorful! I ordered the custom hot pot w/ all the meat and seafood options, onion, bean sprouts, broccoli, mushrooms, with mild spice. The broth is very flavorful. We made our own entree by taking some of the dry pot and spoon the chicken broth and veggies atop, squeeze a lil lime juice and OMG it's a flavorful masterpiece! The only reason I didn't give Basil Thai 5 stars was because I thought the digital menu via the QR code was a little difficult to use and there are limited substitutions so definitely make sure you understand the spice levels.
I was recommended this place from a friend, so I had to try when I'm in Austin. When we got there it was empty, which was a surprise because we came in during lunch time on a weekend. This made me question whether it was actually good or not. Me and my boyfriend did the create your own hot pot. I got the thai yellow curry with beef & he got the combo tom yum. The both of the broths were really good. The thai yellow curry was rich & creamy. The tom yum was sweet. Both of the hot pot had plenty of meats & veggies. It was a good portion for the both of us & wouldn't recommend sharing. To place an order, you just scan the QR. We were able to get our food fairly quickly. Overall, it was good & I would most likely come back when I am in Austin.
AUSTIN RESTAURANT WEEK #2 A pleasant find in the HEB shopping at Parmer and Mopac...this little gem was a hidden surprise. We might not have heard about Basil Thai had it not been for restaurant week. For $25 you received soup and fried chicken for 2-3 people. After eating my soup, I did not have much room for fried chicken. The soup was nicely prepared with perfectly cooked vegetables...just a little more than al dente but not super soft. We had enough leftovers for another meal. The soup was so flavorful and steaming hot, which came out on a square wood stand with a hibachi type top. You could literally see the fire underneath the metal bowl. My hubby, who is a meat and potatoes guy, loved the soup and the fried chicken. The white meat fried chicken was in nugget size servings with a superbly flavored crust. The manager served us with ourfood coming pretty quickly. Basil Thai had a large number to go orders with two Uber drivers picking up large orders. The environment in the restaurant was pretty laid back. Thumbs up on this restaurant...
I was really drawn to the concept and was super excited to try this place. However, I was a bit disappointed :( I ordered the spicy dry pot that had all the toppings chosen for you. You order by scanning a QR code on your phone and the interface was confusing for me. I thought noodles were included, so I ended up having to order some on the side later. The price was lowkey ridiculous, $1.50 for 1/4 of an instant noodle block. The dry pot itself was okay. It was around $20 with just meat and veg and the portion was pretty big, enough to feed two people. The only thing was that it was insanely salty. I brought the leftovers home and diluted it with some chicken broth and it tasted a lot better. The flavor was good and I liked the mala spice. The service was very nice. I would give it another try but maybe order differently. The thai tea however, was really good! It tasted like it was actually brewed and not powder.
Service was not bad. It was really busy when I went but we were able to get a table pretty quickly. We got the family combo meal to split and it was a lot of food. However some of the flavors/spices were kind of off. the dry noodles just felt like when you have random stuff in the fridge and you tossed it together. It had french fries, fish balls and all sorts of random things that didn't taste cohesive at all. However I really really enjoyed the fried rice, it's probably one of the best I've had. Perfectly spicy and fluffy.
We were looking for a Thai place that was somewhat northwest and picked this place. When I walked in, the fabulosa cleaning chemicals were over powering the restaurant to the point it made my nasals hurt, but touched it out since we were a party of 3. No paper menus, had to scan and order but had issues since our order was not submitted, waitstaff ended up placing our order. Prices are steep considering the amount of food you get. The dishes are different than we are accustomed too although the broths were not as heavy and rich which was a plus. I found the food ok, however the drunken noodle was dry, I'm use to it having it slightly saucy. The red curry hot pot was tasty but again, slightly different than what we're used to. The tom yum seafood hotpot was tasty but not what I was expecting and a very small hotpot but luckily we had enough to share. We all drove a minimum of 20 miles to this place and am not sure it's worth the distance driven. We have our favorites that we frequent in our areas. But it was worth a try.
I had seen that Basil Thai was like a personal hotpot place, but I had never gone before because I thought it was like a whole deal and probably expensive, and that I had to save the occasion for something special. But! It's actually so accessible and can pass for any meal. Not that the food isn't special, because it really is good, but that I had overhyped what the experience would be into something overwhelming, when that wasn't the case at all. You can do a build your own, but with all the options on the menu, I just decided to get one of their already curated bowls - the coconut milk (tom kah) with beef. I am guilty of just ordering anything that says it has coconut milk in it. And im often disappointed by not really being able to taste the coconut milk in it. But that wasn't the case here at all. Whenever I'm craving spicy coconut milk type broth, this is exactly what I want! The food comes out pretty quickly, and the servers are pretty friendly! I got the medium level spice for this dish, but I definitely feel like I could have gone for the hotter version. I was kind of scared because I was coming off of recovering from a slight cough, but definitely could have gone spicier. The noodles themselves were okay, it felt like your typical ramen noodles. But all the toppings were good, I loved the broccoli in it too. But I wish there was more beef inside, it didn't feel like it had much meat at all. But yeah the broth really sold it for me. I feel like I could have just drank it all, but I didn't want to be too puffy :(( I wish I packed it and took it home. That being said, the price was pretty reasonable imo.
THE BIG: Basil Thai is nestled in the Market at Parmer Lane strip mall. The windows have ads on it but also acts as a sun protector. Plenty of parking in the outdoor parking lot. THE BLACK AND WHITE: We ordered for pickup on a Friday afternoon and was able to get our order filled fast. The parking lot gets full quick so be aware of that. We ordered the dry pot with beef, curry hotpot with udon, tom yum soup, and lemongrass beef. The flavors were all sorts of funked up but maybe it's because I'm a traditionalist with food. The curry hotpot with udon was such a weird texture and I couldn't tell if i liked it. The best dish was the dry pot with beef in my opinion. Meat was nice and spiced and had a bevy of veggies. THE FINAL BAMBOO: We spent around $60 for 4 dishes, which is an incredible price, however the food fell flat for me and I think the only time I would try this again would be if I go in person and sit down.
basil thai never misses!! my friends and i come here all the time. the portions are humongous, especially the hot pots and dry pots, and i love the build-your-own options. there's a wide variety of veggies and meats to choose from, and the protein portions are always sooo generous. the prices are on the higher side, but one pot is easily big enough for two people to share. their mala dry pot is properly spicy and numbing without being too greasy or salty. the curries and lemongrass sizzling plates do lean a little sweeter, though. service is incredibly fast and super friendly, and i leave in a food coma state every single time :D
Oh come on. This was one of my goto places for Singapore vermicelli cuz it's my favorite. I went on Sunday and got platter of weirdly flavored spaghetti? Seriously? Had no curry flavor and the reheated wheat noodles were a weird texture. I won't be back and unfortunately I recommend you look elsewhere. If a place will sub out rice vermicelli with spaghetti? They've lost the plot. I'm so disappointed. There's enough other places around. Don't bother here.
First hotpot experience and this place really set the bar high. Was greeted by the sweetest lady as soon as we walked in. She let us know to scan to order and offered to answer any questions we had before submitting our order. Food was out so fast and presentation was mouthwatering. We decided to do the create your own hotpot with the Thai red curry and salt and pepper wings. The Hot pot was amazing. Not too rich and had depths of flavor. Loved being able to create my own unique flavor by being able to select the ingredients. The salt and pepper wings were not as great. The chicken was very salty and lacked flavor. Overall great experience definitely will be back anytime I'm in the ATX area. Loved the staff 10/10!

Oh that yellow curry!! I'm so glad I put my faith in Yelpers and changed my order from pad thai to the yellow curry. It was excellent in flavors and in texture (consistency or texture). The Singapore curry noodles wasn't as wow as the curry but the quantities of all their dishes are large. And at those prices! We picked medium spice and struggled to handle the heat - next time it's going to be an order for mild. read more

I had this place on my places to Try with my husband. And they did not disappoint. Very flavorful, and cozy atmosphere, everything we ordered came out in a timely manner, fresh and delicious, service was great! You order from your phone and they'll bring it out to you. The hot pots are so cute too! Definitely should check this place out! read more

I had high hopes for this place, but it's pretty generic. I am a big Thai foodie and Austin definitely has a lot to offer. I tried the pad Thai and it was ok. It seemed that the food was rush, which is a possibility since I got it through a food delivery app. I wish they would have taken time with their food. It would make a big difference. The spring rolls were good. Plenty of vegetables and good tasting peanut sauce. This place isn't that noteworthy so I most likely won't be back. read more

I ordered the chicken pad Thai and Thai tea since it was my first time trying Basil Thai restaurant. I was thoroughly impressed. Plenty of flavor throughout the Pad Thai, chicken still moist and seasoned well and as you can see by the picture huge portion sizes. The Thai Tea was tasty and refreshing. read more
This place seems exciting to me since they offer individual hot pots! I ordered chicken wings as an appetizer and it exceeded my expectations. Chicken wings came out hot, fresh and juicy. A bit tad too salty. But soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. The dipping sauce is tangy and good but honestly didn't really need it because the wings itself are salty and tasty enough. After the appetizer came the main event, which is the hotpot! I ordered the lemongrass soup base, with Alaska Wild Salmon with various additions: This salmon was so bad that I'm a bit offended after the first bite. I took it out of the pot and it's very hard, as if it's still frozen. The poor filet is obviously cooked but it's very very dry, hard and tough to chew or swallow. It's so hard that you can't break a piece off with your fork or chopstick unless you actually chew it off! Some of the sides I ordered to accompany the soup is not fresh at all. The fish balls are chewy and bland and wood ear mushrooms too soft and whittled. The ramen is very mushy and overcooked as well. I also got a bowl of rice and immediately recognize it to be the low quality kind you find at a cheap chinese restaurant. The only good parts of this dish is the lemongrass flavor of the soup and the qual eggs. Very few times in my life have I wanted to just pay and not even eat any of it, but I continued poking around the soup and ate the vegetables because I didn't want to waste food. After paying my bill, I looked up Yelp for something else to eat and erase my poor experience here. This establishment is Chinese owned, so if you are an experienced Thai foodie looking for authentic thai, you'll need to lower your expectations when you come here. I have not tried any of the other of the common Thai dishes like pad thai or pad see ew nor will I come back to try. read more

This place is a GEM in austin!! Been here a few times and every time its soo good. I love all their fried and noodle dishes. Im not sure what they use for their batter but all their fried food is just so crispy. Their chicken wings are a must and their egg rolls are really good. I'd also recommend the spring rolls. The noodles here are amazing as well- the drunken noodle is super flavorful. The Szechuan spice here is authentic and pretty spicy so if you cant handle spice i'd recommend getting it less spicy. The service here is also really good and the ambiance is pretty good as well especially if you sit in the booths. read more

My stepsons are in town from Louisiana this weekend to avoid Hurricane Delta, so we decided that hot pot would be just the ticket, and Basil Thai did not disappoint! It's not the type of hardcore legit shared hot pot restaurants that you might find in Houston, where many of the living creatures come to the table to be promptly boiled alive (which sounds absolutely horrifying when written here, but is actually pretty delicious!), but it was definitely awesome in its own right! I won't go into super-detail about the individual hot pot ordering system, since plenty of fine writers have already explained it here, but I will say that, if you're into either Thai or traditional hot pot flavors, you'll find plenty to like! We started with the pork egg rolls , and they were crunchy yummy goodness! We each had one from the 4 piece order, and I would have happily Bogarted the other three, but I played nice. For our dinner, my more squeamish stepson went with the Pad Thai, and he declared it "solid"! The portion was HUGE! The hubby, the other stepson, and I went individual hot pot all day long! We had red curry broth with combo meat/seafood, yellow curry broth with beef, and miso broth with shrimp, all with assorted accoutrement, and it was ALL good! The miso was my choice, and it's a good one, if you're going for more of the traditional hot pot experience, but I was most a fan of my husband's yellow curry, while he was most a fan of my stepson's red curry, and my stepson was most a fan of my miso, so it was a circular Gift of the Magi, but you really can't go wrong with any of it! Pro Tip: Be sure to add the "instant ramen noodles" to your hot pot order, if you survived on those bricks of ramen in college! The look and texture will take you straight back there, in a deliciously refined way! Pro Tip 2: Don't try to eat your meal right out of the pot like we did, unless you're prepared to scald your taste buds off! It's en fuego, literally! Ladle it into the accompanying bowl! All in all, there's not a dang thing that we didn't like about Basil Thai, and we'll be return customers for sure! read more
The food here ... indescribably amazing! I love how you can customize your own hotpot and the options are endless, sad that you can only choose 8 toppings :(. My favorite curry base is the green curry one because it has just enough spice! I would recommend the massaman curry base too. For toppings I highly recommend the wood ear mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, fish balls and potatoes! Personally I like the udon noodles more, but getting the ramen noodles is more worth your money. This restaurant's soup feels like a warm hug on a cold day. My only complaint is how pricey one pot is, it is enough for 2 meals but still a bit on the high end, so definitely not an everyday meal. read more
Went during a busy Sunday night ): only one person was running the floor for a while before someone else from the kitchen came to help, definitely understaffed but they're too sweet for me to complain so I recommend going on a weekday The food was great and portions are huge, I'd recommend sharing one with combination meats between two people or get your own if you're starving (we waited for awhile so yes we were starving) I got the Szechuan broth (spicy) and we also got lemongrass Tom yum (tangy seafood). Both were delicious, the Szechuan did sit a little heavy on my stomach afterwards because it gradually got more oily but we still enjoyed both pots I wish the Tom yum came with noodles but it didn't so do note to ask for some or order ur custom one with the Tom yum soup Overall, pretty good, authentic Asian setting, sweet staff, worth a try if you're in town or from the area @tien.eats on insta for more content (: read more

Me and my friend was visiting Austin for 1 night and decided to try Basil Thai. Well no more that i can say, probably one of the worst Thai restaurants i have visited. Food was average (leaning towards bad). We ordered penang curry with noodle hotpot(beef), beef pad thai, lemongrass beef, and pineapple fried rice. I really have no words, food is bad, pad thai were so bad even the instant pad thai is better lol, could barely see the beef. Same with the lemongrass beef, even though it was recommended on the menu list, it was bad, cant taste nothing only spicy and 80% of the dish was vegetables, i could even count with 2 hands how many pieces of beef they gave. Penang curry was ok, still edible. Pineapple fried rice i can make better at home. Price was not it, definitely not worth it. Place and service was ok. Came here over a Saturday lunch while running errands. Easy to get to from Half Price or HEB or Mopac. Quiet, dim, and unassuming place - prolly driven by 20 times and didn't notice. Very clean and spacious inside. Host/server was super friendly, and took the order rapidly: tofu pad thai, tofu yellow curry, spring rolls. It came out just as rapidly and in huge portions. I didn't think I could eat that much. It wasn't spicy without added sriracha but very flavorful. Lovely presentation. Ate every bite and loved it. Adding to my goto list. read more
We went for lunch right when the restaurants open at noon and it got full fast. There's a QR code at the table that you can scan with your phone to see the menu and order. We decided to create our own hotpot and were surprise that we got to choose as many as 8 ingredients all included in the price of the hot pot! There is an additional fee for any ingredients beyond the first 8. Everything was so delicious, they gave a great quantity of each ingredient, it was definitely worth the price! This place and service was really nice. If you are stopping by, the chicken wings are a must try. The yellow curry noodles were good but I wish that I got one level up on spice, I ordered 3/5 spicy. I wasn't very impressed with the hot pot but I could have probably ordered better. read more
Came for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and found the place to be pretty quiet. Definitely not a high traffic area so I wouldn't worry much about having a wait. This is another spot I'd add to the shockingly long list of "dingy looking restaraunts in dingy looking strip malls that have surprisingly good Asian food in North Austin". This was my first experience going for hot pot in this area and was overall pretty happy with it. Their menu is super customizable, the individual hot pot is a la carte for a reasonable flat price given the portion size. While their menu does have more of an emphasis on Thai options, they have a wide array of flavors from other Asian cuisines. If you have a friend who's a little hesitant to venture out and try Asian cuisine I think this is a great introduction. Both my dish (Szechuan hot pot) and my friend's (Thai Yellow Curry) were pretty mild flavors compared to what we've had elsewhere, but still quite tasty. Also being able to pick every item in the hotpot allows them to steer clear of any ingredients they're less familiar/comfortable with. read more
Basil Thai is definitely one of my favorite go to places when the weather is chilly and cold. I can't really comment on their other menu items, the wife and I simply order the custom hot pot. One of my favorites has to be the Seafood Tom Kha. I usually add in udon or ramen noodles, spam, fish balls and plenty of veggies. There are so many different things that you can add, the options are endless. The Tom Kha definitely has a lot of flavor. The seafood might not be the freshest, but you are paying about $16 for a huge portion. The wife and I always have plenty to take back with us. Subtracting a star because the service is very hit or miss. They were attentive to us this most recent time but they also had a lot of tables that had not been cleared off. They are pretty understaffed so just be patient. Basil Thai always hits the spot no matter what mood I am in. I am excited to try the other options and broths that they have. read more
I was a little skeptical when I saw mixed reviews about the place, but ended up trying it out with my friends anyways. We came in on a Monday evening at 6:30 pm , and had a group of 7 people. We got a table right away, and the place was already filling up fast. The owner gave each one of us the menu, and a piece of paper to mark down what we wanted to select for our customized hot pot. I chose my base: beef with kimchi broth and added in lots of veggies, quail eggs, and ramen with it. The food came out fairly quick, and the hot pot size was perfect for me. I am not sure what the pot was on, because it wasn't an electric stove, but it did a good job with heating the soup up after a bit and would burn out after awhile on its own without us having to adjust it. The soup itself was good, it wasn't too flavorful as I would have liked it but it wasn't bland either! The only thing I wished they had was dipping sauce to dip the meat and veggies in, but other than that it was really decent. The experience was also fun for all of us too! Customer service was a bit slow because it was just the couple running it, but nonetheless we were happy to support a local restaurant- mom pop shop. The place is casual, and we saw it as a place for when you are craving for decent hot pot, no frills and affordable place to be. I came here once last year when all of my friends were posting the individual hot pot on their Instagram stories, and it looked delicious. I don't really remember much from the trip, but I just remember ordering a broth that I wasn't in love with. I ended up not eating over half the hot pot. Recently, I came again with a group of friends. They frequent Basil Thai pretty often, so they all recommended the lemongrass broth to me. I definitely enjoyed my second time here a lot more. I ordered corn, basil, fish tofu, beef meatballs, quail eggs, ramen noodles, and a couple of other ingredients that I can't remember. The lemongrass broth is really good. I'm not typically a fan of sour broths, but it's probably their best (I tried the other broths from my friends' hot pots). I also like their Mala spicy broth, but it's a bit too spicy for me to order on my own. The price is pretty expensive for hot pot. Each individual hot post probably costs them about $2 to make, but they uncharge up to $14. I think you are better off making your own hot pot at home because all of the ingredients are incredibly cheap. However, if you're lazy and don't have the means to make your own at home, Basil Thai is a great option. I'm not in love with the price and it's not somewhere I can go often, but it's great for a cold day. read more

Every time we want to eat out we come to this place but today it was very disappointing. I got veggie spring rolls and literally we paid almost $15 for rice paper and lettuce. It was supposed to have noodles and tofu.., and it was very empty. We are not coming back. I get it people are trying to save as much money as possible but this is how you lose business. read more

Delicious hot pot. It's not a typical style in that it comes already in the pot and cooked but they are very customizable and delicious. I went with the yellow curry. My fiancé tried the red curry. We tried a cup of the thom ka. Probably wouldn't order that again but our hotspots were wonderful. Perfect for a cold, rainy night. I rarely go North of Airport BLVD so the fact that I went to Parmer shows my dedication to hot pot read more

I got the build-your-own noodle soup, so I chose the ingredients that I thought I would like, but maybe I just don't like this kind of food. The colours look so sickly in the picture. It tasted okay. The restaurant definitely has that family-owned, has never been updated since it opened kind of look. read more

After two visits, I can comfortably say this is the most unimpressive individual hot pot I've ever had. You can make better, more flavorful hot pot at home. FOOD: Ive tried the Sichuan hot pot, green curry hot pot with chicken, and panang curry with lamb. Green curry hot pot with chicken- probably the best of the three, but still not great. Chicken was cut and cooked well, but there was minimal curry flavor. Panang curry hot pot with lamb- base tasted watered down, and the flavor barely seeped into the add ons. The lamb was dry and seemed over cooked. Sichuan hot pot- tasted like they used some average Sichuan hot pot paste from a random Asian grocery Add ons- I normally love fish tofu, but the fish tofu was really rough and chewy. All other add ons were average, you could easily replicate at home with a better hot pot base. Service was efficient and friendly enough, plenty of parking outside. read more
One of my favorite restaurants in Austin- a hidden gem for create-your-own hot pot! You have the choice of selecting the 'main ingredient' and I chose seafood which includes shrimp, mussel, squid, clam. The combo (lamb, beef, seafood) is also so yummy! The hot pot includes your choice of up to 8 veggies. The list of 'veggies' includes noodles like udon or ramen. Next you choose the broth- I really enjoyed both the Szechuan and the lemongrass (Tom yum). The Szechuan can be pretty spicy, it's described as 'numbing' on the menu and it does live up to that. The portion sizes are fairly large, they do not skimp out on the food, I usually have extra to take home. It's so flavorful and loved the presentation as well. Unfortunately, I can't speak to any other menu items since I can't NOT order the hot pot when I come here- SO GOOD! read more
I am literally such a simp for hot pot and when I saw photos of the ones from Basil Thai, it's been on my radar every since. It was a really chilly night so I decided to pop by the other day and I was honestly very satisfied. My cousin and I ordered a individual hot pot where we built our own. The process was pretty much like a Chipotle/WhichWich order where we just marked what we wanted. Our hotpot for $15. - Protein: Beef - Base: Szechuan Regular (which I highly recommend if you spicy food, Szechuan spice has this really mild numbing effect. The spice builds up as you eat and it definitely warms your body up) - Veggies: Cabbage, Enoki Mushrooms, Fish Balls, Bean Sprouts, Imitation Crab, Ramen, Spam, and Cloud Ear Mushrooms. For the price, the pot was a bit smaller than I had expected. It's definitely enough food for one person though. I thought that portions were pretty good, it's like one or two bunches of each of the select items that you picked. The flavor was really really good! I was super happy with the Szechuan flavor. The food was also warm throughout as they utilize one of those mini portable stoves. The interior kinda of reminds of a buffet and it doesn't really fit the food that they're selling. But customer service was really great, the staff is super friendly. Overall, I was very happy with what I got. I honestly would only come to split with a friend as the hot pot vibes are very nice. I'll probably come back to try their dry hot pots in the future. read more
