Steel Head trout with Mixed veggies that were lightly buttered and the seasoning on the trout was perfect. I mean it was like melt away the day and fall into the dish amazing...now this may partly be because we had just left yoga and the PERFECT bloody mary was getting the better of me but, WOW! Grilled Chicken chopped eggs, fresh salad and a honey vinagarette dressing. The service was great and I would have to say the price isn't killer when you add it all up at any place for lunch. On my most recent visit one of the cooks saw me and my date waiting ... leaning up near the kitchen ... and gave us a free order of fries. We wanted something good to eat and we spoke to Phil, our waiter. He recommended a steak and showed us its size using his hands. The steak was well over 60% gristle, and was much smaller than the waiter had indicated. We showed him and he said he would go to the kitchen and would show the chef. Afterward he brought the check and then disappeared. This steak was $39 and they didn't care that no-one could eat it. I made reservations for four for Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m. (March 12) and asked if we could come early for happy hour and by what time would we have to come. We were told any time before 6:00 p.m., so we came at 5:30, but after much confusion between the bartender and the maître de, we were told that there was no Happy Hour on weekends! Bad. Perhaps the best thing about Houston's is its consistency. I know when I show up (especially for dinner on a weekend) there will be a wait, sometimes a long wait, but I know that once I'm seated, service will be good and the food will be well worth it. Everything that I have had on their menu is excellent. If I'm not going there with a specific craving in mind (more on that later), it can be hard to order. But some of their dishes I crave...I crave 'em bad. The Evil Thai Jungle Steak Noodle Salad (they have unfortunately changed the name to something less exciting) could quite possibly be my choice for last meal on earth. It consists of steak and noodles and mango and avocado and so much tangy flavorful goodness that I can't remember it all. The steak is consistently fantastic and cooked perfectly. Everyone I have introduced to it loves it. This is by far my default choice at Houston's. I LOVE it. Warning: you too could become addicted. Sometimes I go to Houston's craving something else: vegetables. I'm no veggie expert, but i think they have some of the best prepared vegetables in town. Their green beans, their cabbage, their brussels sprouts, their spaghetti squash...all fabulous. In fact, their baked potato is one of the best I've ever had -- with nothing but olive oil and basil on it! I am also madly in love with their couscous, which usually comes with the vegetable plate, but if i'm not having the veggie plate sometimes i order it as a side anyway. If i have not stuffed myself with veggies or evil jungle-ness (or sometimes, even if I have), I indulge in a slice of key lime pie. Sooooooooo good. Houston's does have an unfortunately short dessert selection -- thankfully there is one I love. If Houston's was closer to my house and a bit cheaper I would be there all the time. But it's still worth the trip and the cost. Hate loving a chain this much, but I do. UPDATE 11/30: Last time we were there, there were some words on the menu that implied that they would not seat parties larger than 7 together? It may be because they have very few options to accommodate large parties -- they have a lot of booths. But I thought it was weird that they spelled it out on the menu. So just FYI...if you are going with more than 7, you might want to call and check or be prepared to sit at separate tables... read more

Four stars for the ambiance and courteousness of service; three stars for wine selection and speed of service, comes to an average of 3.5 stars. What about food?.. Ah, yes! They do serve food!... The food we got served was best described as 'Meh' -- especially at the price point. I've ordered their red snapper and Brussels sprouts special and hubby had a hamburger and fries concoction (classic!). Both were underwhelming. The food wasn't bad. It's just that when I pay over $20 for an entrée, I expect a bit more creativity, flavor, and/or aesthetically appealing presentation. Maybe it was an unfortunate mishap of the chef, but the fish looked middle-aged and kind of unappetizingly flopped onto the plate. Brussels sprouts looked lonely and unwanted. Together, the fish and the sprouts duo just looked like abandoned orphans on a plate. I would've killed for some flavor on that food: sour, salty, sweet, spicy -- you name it -- anything. All I got was just a whole lot of bland. The burger was above average quality, but nothing to rave home about... Oh, and I almost forgot: we also ordered artichoke and spinach dip app. The salsa side was the flavorful highlight of that dish. The rest was forgettably -- you got it -- bland. The place is very atmospheric and is teeming with dark burgundies and darker woods. Service was on point and quite attentive, if a little slow on delivery. I love that they filter their tap water -- saves a couple of bucks on ordering bottled (not that they sell any). Houston's is a really good restaurant. Well . . . extremely good restaurant. I'll knock a star off because it is expensive(although most dishes warrant the price), there is quite a long wait for lunch and dinner, and they don't serve Guinness. Other than that, its a great alternative to Ruth's Chris and outshines its NW Austin competition(Z Tejas & Eddy V's). The service is fantastic as every waiter in the place is your waiter and will instantly refill your tea or ice water. The Hawaiian Rib-eye is very good, and at $25 for lunch not a bad bargain as large steaks go, the pork chop is awe inspiring like the Grand Canyon and one must see it for themselves. The burger is pretty good too, almost as good as Riata, however going here and ordering a burger is a wasted oppurtunity. read more

What? Houston's has changed it's name? I used to go to Houston's all the time for lunch - was close enough to my office and it had a great atmosphere for entertaining. Anyway, most everything has stayed the same, except that I'm not sure Bartlett's has the same ring to it that Houston's did. Latest visit had the Spinach and Artichoke Dip (awesome) and the Grilled Chicken Salad (good). The steaks are generally great and they make sure they cook them exactly as ordered. Yah, went here on rec from a friend, didn't expect much but had one of the best cheeseburgers I've ever had. You could actually taste the cheddar, and medium rare is just how it came out. The old stand-by. I am just going to steal somebody else's review of it being 'professional and consistent.' I'm just not sure about the criticisms of it being overpriced. It may not be cheap, but you're getting what you pay for. It's better than Chili's, but not as good as one of the top-top steakhouses. I think its prices reflect that. The Hawaiian rib-eye is my favorite, and when you start with their spinach dip it's going to be a good night. My wife has eaten the Ahi Tuna Salad everyt ime she has been there for the past 10 years. This would be a pretty easy 4 yelp star'd restaurant except I think their service pushes them over the top. When we went there two times ago, my steak was a little over-cooked. It was still good, and far from anything I would even complain about nor send back. When our waiter came over to ask how everything was, we said fine. He looked at my steak and told me that it was not how I ordered it. I admitted that it wasn't perfect, but we were still greatly enjoying our meal. At the end of the meal the manager came over and demanded that we take a card for a free steak the next time we were there. We didn't accept, but he basically told us that we would be insulting their standard of service and quality of their food if we didn't take it. The genuineness of their service was evident. As a chain restaurant, I'm sure this is part of their protocol, but the way in which the waiter and manager went about the situation (which wasn't really a situation) was impressive. read more

I've had Bartlett's on my Burgers to Try list for quite some time now. I kinda feel like I have no right to give a review at this point because after a recent and first visit, all I had was a salad. It's kinda like going to a Chinese BBQ restaurant and only ordering white rice. In my defense however, I came here unprepared and unexpectedly for a friend's last minute event, I had already eaten not too long prior and was not hungry and burger left overs are never a good thing. Plus, one of my friend's friends used to work here and vouched for their salads. We shared the grilled artichoke appetizer and it was pretty good. For myself I ordered the Club Salad that comes with crispy chicken, smokehouse bacon, avocado, and egg. I asked to swap the crispy chicken for grilled chicken which was my mistake. The chicken that came in my salad appeared to be grilled, but was cold. Cold like it had just been taken out of the fridge. At the former employee's recommendation I got their honey mustard dressing which I should have definitely asked for on the side because there was way too much mixed in, my mistake again. The atmosphere is pretty nice too. It definitely had a Texas upscale steakhouse vibe to it. I found the service to be a bit mixed. One of the hosts had a bit of an attitude issue going on. Outside of her, the rest of the staff were delightful. A lot of missteps on my part it seems so I would consider trying them again at some point. read more

Upscale American food in a clubby, classy space, Bartletts has managed to improve upon its incarnation as Houston's and seems to be one of the most reliable restaurants in this part of town. They do a bustling business each night of the week, and on this Tuesday night was no exception. We went to spend a gift card. It was quite cold out, and it just sounded like a good night to eat some of the hearty fare they dish out at this nice joint. We always prefer to sit at the bar, where there are always a couple of very professional bartenders, and you can scope out the mix of older diners and heavy drinkers. On this specific night, we had a couple of glasses of red wine, a top notch rotisserie chicken and black bean dish, a healthy pork chop, and split some fries. We did not leave hungry. The fries are always good - they cut them thin, fry them good and crispy, and we made short work of them as our appetizer. The pork chop was also solid. A huge portion, and prepared exactly as specified. American comfort food done right. My chicken was the highlight, however. It came out bathed in a smoky black bean sauce that hit spots I didn't even know I had. It was just a touch sweet, rich and dark, and was about the best plate of winter food I've had in recent memory. The fact that it didn't seem greasy or heavy was a plus, as well. If you like an old-school, dimly lit, steakhouse feel - and are willing to spend a few bucks for the privilege - you'll enjoy being able to stay out of the downtown crowds while still getting a top notch meal. read more

When my husband and I were looking for a Valentine's Dinner spot, we had a few important criteria. Good looking meat options, Gluten free menu,romantic feel and decent sized portions ( spending $$$ and leaving hungry is never for us.) After looking at some downtown options, I kept coming back to look at Bartlett's. We decided to give it a try. From the minute we walked in, I was impressed. It was romantic, dim lighting, comfy booths, made you feel like you were not in an austin strip mall, but somewhere way more posh. The 2 buck off wine happy hour, and delicious glass of malbec did it for me! Our artichokes ( the house specialty) were delicious, and a perfect way to start. My husband ordered ribs and fries- both perfection. I had a steak and a baked potato ( equally awesome.) My pot de creme with candied orange was the perfect after dinner size, and delicious. The food was not that bad. We had steak, and for the price, there are a ton of other places I'd rather rather eat steak at. With two sides, salad and tea our bill was about 120 with tip. I just went to Morton's of Chicago and spent that. Not worth it. Maybe other things are better but don't get steak! I heard this used to be a Houston's and was expecting something similar. One of my favorite places to go! The barbecue ribs are to die for! And the salad with buttermilk dressing is the best!

A friend of mine's parents go here all the time, it's their favorite place. Walking in you are transported to another time, maybe the late 60s, but not in a way that they were trying. It's older, wealthier, and underground. It's where the people that run this town go and just hang out and have some cocktails. Now, my wife and I came there for dinner so I didn't get a chance to mingle at the bar and get all the stories, so this review is mostly about the food as service. The layout is a bit weird, they clearly extended parts of it, and not that seamlessly. Service was fantastic, always polite and on point. The food was a bit of a mixed bag, nothing bad mind you, but i want to sit talk to the chef and ask him why he did what he did. For example, I got a steak that was so marinated it may as well been a chunk of pork, there was no steak flavor left, much was the same with the other dishes, flavorfully yes, but not because of the main ingredient. Overall, good food, but I wish the food was the star, not the preparation. That said, I had a great time and good food. Next time i'll probably just eat at the bar and hear some stories. read more

I was not impressed. Got there around 7:30 pm and was told we had a 45 minute wait. We sat on the patio and ordered drinks. The waitress took our order and told us that someone else would bring them out to us. When she did, she looked at us skeptically and asked if we were actually 21. I would have much preferred that she just asked for our IDs. I had a pomegranate margarita, which was delicious but had very little alcohol for $10. After about 25 minutes of waiting, we were seated. I liked the atmosphere. The booths were individually lit, so it felt very private. The SO and I decided on grilled artichokes for our appetizers. The char was a little intense and not so palatable. The remoulade was delicious, just not enough to drown out the artichoke. I choose the surf and turf special with a steak, crab cake, and loaded baked potato. The steak was cooked a perfect medium, but had no flavor. I had to SALT my steak. For the price, I'm not okay with that. Crab cake was made of huge flaky pieces of crab, but tasted briny and not fresh. The baked potato was the best part of the meal. My SO had the grilled redfish with rock shrimp. His food was better, but the shrimp were microscopic. He liked the wilted spinach side. Our waiter was very good. Our drinks were always refilled and plates taken away quickly. (I really hate for my plate to just sit on the table after I'm done.) Overall, I thought the food was OK, but not worth the $100 price tag for our meal. read more

It's been probably over 15 years since I've been to Houston's, and I've started hearing great things about this place, now that they're privately owned. The decor is old school. Leather booths, dark wood, and white-collared waitrons. Well, white collared with jeans, but hey...this is Austin, after all. Our service was actually pretty great. Not because of our waitress, necessarily, but because these folks work well together. With many years in the industry myself, I enjoy watching the patterns of front-of-house people. They know what they're doing, and are very pleasant the whole time. In fact, there was one lady with brilliant golden eyes that had a smile for me every time she passed. I think I have a new crush! Again. The veggie burger was one of the few that doesn't fall apart when you start eating it. I thought about getting some jalapenos on there, but I believe there are some within the patty itself. It provided a nice little bite to the burger. Who knew black beans and brown rice could taste so good? The fries were pretty awesome as well. Shoestring type. Nice and crispy. The Manhattan and Old Fashioned were both pretty mediocre. A decent, hefty pour, but lacking in the flavors that I look for in those two drinks. The only other issue that I has was that I asked for a side of hickory sauce, which came with my friend's burger, but I got some other bbq sauce that just didn't measure up. No big deal, but make sure you get some hickory sauce, because it's delicious. Will I be back? Maybe next time I'm on a business lunch. So my wife Nova loves chain restaurants, Houston's chief among them. So when we drove past Bartlett's a few weeks back, she noticed it looked an awful lot like a Houston's. Apparently, that's because it used to be one. While the name out front has changed, the food and atmosphere is near identical to what we've come to expect. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as Houston's was one of the few corporate restaurants I enjoyed eating at. Not wanting the same ol' same ol', I skipped the Houston legacy items for a daily special -- a petit filet accompanied by a plump crab cake. My juicy steak was perfectly pink while my crab cake was fresh and devoid of filler. Nova's big-ass ribeye was also to her satisfaction, good since she was in a meaty mood. Of course, we did default to a few old favorites, namely the spinach artichoke dip and the apple walnut cobbler. Both tasted just like we remembered. While I can't say Bartlett's has done much to establish its own identity, I guess the old adage stands: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." read more

I would just like to say that my husband and I dined at Houston's tonight and have decided to not return. The past two times we have eaten at Houston's we have been very disappointed in the servers. Both times our servers have made comments that we have found to be rude. The last time we ate dinner there, I ordered a glass of Cabernet and the waiter informed me that he would 'only drink that after he'd downed a bottle of scotch first'. Based upon this 'recommendation' I ordered a different glass of wine and wasn't particularly impressed with his suggestion...it tasted about on par with what I was going to originally have. Tonight, we ordered an appetizer of the spinach dip and the waiter took our dinner order as well. When I ordered the traditional salad and soup, Zachary inquired as to 'whether that was going to be enough for you?". I think I know how much food to order and was rather insulted by his insinuation that...what? I look like I need more to eat than that? If I had wanted more than that, I would have ordered more than that. We were tempted to just leave tonight without eating and just walk out. The food is okay but the staff is horrid. UPDATE: We did contact the manager with out comments and they fed-exed us a gift certificate and apologized for the way we had been treated. read more

A lot changed when they got rid of the name Houston's. The ribs aren't as great anymore, the spinach artichoke dip is okay, the service is still great, but it use to be a lot better. The Hawaiian Ribeye is still cooked to perfection and the salad dressings are all delicious. Great wine list, but there is still something missing when it was Houstons. Maybe I got a bad taste in my mouth when I got served a Scotch in a rocks glass with a chip of glass missing and cut the inside of my lip? I still take clients here but definitely don't drive north as often as use too. BTW, the best server in Austin works here. His name is Matt and he's a tall, tan, husband of 3 girls. I have been coming to Bartlett's since it was part of the Houston's organization. I've had lunches and dinners at their location, intimate nights and group events, and I can unequivocally stay that their service is top notch and the food is very good. I honestly cannot rave enough about the quality service that I have received time and time again. Most notably, ask for Angie on Thurs, Fri, Sat evenings. Charming and knowledgeable about the offerings, to say the least. I am a big fan of the spinach/artichoke dip and smoked salmon for appetizers. Also ask for the off-the-menu guacamole--it's fantastic. The pork ribs are my go-to for an entree, however the hickory burger is good for lunch and their fish selection is good for dinner. I've been going to "Houston's" since I lived in Houston. When I found out one existed in Austin, I was ever so delighted! Then they changed the name but kept the menu, and I'm so glad they did. They run a tight ship over there. It is the best service. Your drink never goes empty, your food comes out fast, your plate is taken away soon after you are done, and your check comes when you are ready for it. It is our favorite restaurant and has been for a couple of years. We've never had a bad meal or bad service. Just in love with Bartlett's. The go to food for us is The ceasar salad (ask for a side of cheesy bread, you won't regret it - if you're hungry enough, ask for a plate of cheesy bread. It gets to you all melty and delicious!). They have the best burger in town. Hands down. And their shoestring fries are also top on the list of best fries in town. We love the Hawaiian, I think they call it the house marinated rib-eye. Mouth watering. My husband has a special love for the Asian steak salad and the peel and eat shrimp when it is in season. The pork chop is the tastiest pork chop I've had and you have to try the french dip sandwich at some point, that au jus sauce is magnificent. And all of the deserts are worth trying. The entrees are spare and expensive. We dined there this evening, each of us getting the filet and crab cake special (a petite filet with a single crab cake, and a pile of brussel sprouts, for $37!). The meat was relatively tough for a meal at this price, was inadequately seasoned, was somewhat overdone, and mine tasted strongly of kidney, a not-at-all pleasant experience. The (lone) crab cake was average. The brussels sprouts were very tasty, but that owes largely to the sugar in the water in which they had been prepared. Call me contrary if you must, but if I drop more than $100 for three plates, I expect the food to be far and away better than anything I can prepare in my own kitchen, and this Was. Not. That. To be honest, we only went here because Hop Doddy had a line out the door. At 2:30pm! Not happy about that, but we'd been to Houston's a lot and I'd heard Bartlett's was every bit as good. Clearly, there was no wait at 2:30pm, so we got seated right away. We ordered the delicious spinach and artichoke dip for our appetizer. Just as delicious as we remembered it. The salsa (totally Pace picante sauce) tasted a bit spicier, which was nice. Good split for 4 people. Everything here is on the pricey side. My MIL got the fish sandwich. My FIL and husband got the Texas burger. I got the salmon that was on special. It came with roasted peppers, which were weird and slimy. The waitress asked me about them and I told her I didn't like them, so she graciously brought me a HUGE baked potato. The salmon and potato were delicious! Easy 5 stars. My MIL loved her fish sandwich and coleslaw. The Texas burger eaters weren't so thrilled. They both said it was good, not great. I have eaten at Houston's since the 80s in Dallas, Houston and Beverly Hills. I finally tried the one in Austin and it doesn't disappoint. The food, service and presentation is impeccable! I keep getting the same thing though - Club Sandwich and an appetizer of Spinach Dip. Somebody help me branch out! But it sounds like I should try a burger there since I wasn't happy with Mighty Fine. I was tempted to knock off a star because of the Austin location. Sort of a weird area for Houston's. Not very nice at all but I guess it's been there for years. Little hard to get to for me, but I will happily make a trip again soon. EDIT 5-9-10: I have not eaten here after it became Bartlett's. I hadn't eaten here in the last couple of years so was happy to see the cozy upscale interior hadn't changed. Neither had the food, which was excellent quality and very tasty. Spinach dip is still a winner as were the baby back ribs! read more
