New ish modern Chinese bakery in the heart of flushing. There was a line when I went but it moved pretty fast. The inside is like a little market for baos / pastries. I liked the setup and everything was easy to see and grab. They were also making the pastries fresh as I was on line to pay. Had their cheese tarts & egg tarts. Both were really good and I'd get them again. Reasonably priced as well, you can grab a good amount of stuff without breaking the bank. I'd highly suggest to stop by if you're in the area. read more

Bao's Pastry just opened its first US location in Flushing, originally from China and the hype is real. I went on a weekday afternoon and the line was already out the door but don't let that scare you off. The line moves quick and the setup is efficient. As you enter, you grab a basket and pick items as you move along the line. Some of the highlights- -Velvet taro egg tart ($3): a must-try. Smooth, creamy, and not overly sweet with a layer of black glutinous rice on the bottle. Flaky crust. They also give you disposable gloves for the egg tarts. -Pork floss balls topped with seaweed and sesame ($5): savory, fluffy, and packed with flavor. The pork floss was crispy -Cookies: sooo good and not too sweet. We tried the milk and raisin, jujube soft pastry, milk taosu cookies and the hawthorn soft pastries. My daughter loved the hawthorn and taosu cookies. I would definitely skip the Taro snow puff cake. It was soft but very sticky and unfortunately lacking flavor compared to everything else. Overall, Bao's Pastry is definitely worth checking out if you're in Flushing. read more

So fresh and yummy! Wish I lived closer but my waistline is happy I'm not nearby. We chose the taro cream bun and a pastry with pork floss. Perfect combo of sweet and salty! read more

I don't often visit Flushing but I just so happen to walk by this bakery and saw a long line. I asked the worker if there's any special promotion going on today and he gave me the most lackluster response. He told me to ask the workers inside. No promotions but the store is very lively and the wait was about 15 minutes. You can see the bakers putting together the pastries. I brought the golden Portuguese egg tarts. $2 each. It was okay. Crispy shells and the egg fillings wasn't as creamy as the ones I had in Macau or in Brooklyn. Xin fa bakery in brooklyn in much better and the portion is bigger for the same price. read more

$36 for a few pastries plus a long line? I don't understand the hype. First , the store is very clean and aesthetically pleasing. However in the heart of flushing with many bakeries and sweet, this is just overhyped and overpriced. Their meat floss cake is one of their specialty but it's also easily accessible in other bakeries. Egg tarts are good but way overpriced for its size. Their matcha and taro cakes were confusing. Literally just two round cake sandwiched with some cream in the middle and the slap some matcha or taro cream. An extremely messy way to eat it. Light in flavor and don't expect it to be sweet. Not worth the wait. read more

Went, brought and ate this place out for the first time with my mom wondering what kinds of pastries we should get. The lines weren't too crowded but it was definitely not so crowded that we had managed to line up and the lines kept moving forward that the service seemed good and busy. At the end we definitely got different kinds of pastries and it looks absolutely delicious that when we got home afterwards it had tasted really good and delicious. Finally, I would definitely eat and come back again next time. read more

Happened to be in the area on a weekday and there was no line. (There's always a line during the weekend.) I asked what was the best seller/most popular item and was directed to the floss & seaweed. Got a few of those and some Portuguese egg tarts. Unfortunately, I was not a fan of the floss & seaweed, the texture and flavor combination did not appeal to me. However, the egg tarts were very flaky and quite good. The store is well organized and clean and the staff were very efficient. read more

I've seen this line down the block and I'm not waiting on that. Finally came during night time when there was no line. I bought the crispy chocolate puff and tiramisu egg tart. Tried the egg tart and it was good. Total came about to $14 which I think is expensive but it was tasty. I'll update once I try the puff read more

Visited this spot right before it closed so the line was short and not a lot of variety left. I wasn't too sure what I was expecting as far as it goes for the puff cake and egg tarts. I wasn't wowed by it, IMO, it was just a blob of cream on a pound cake. The egg tarts were decent, great crust to it but not the best I've had. Anything pork floss is great so no complaints on that. Doubt I'd returned for another purchase read more

Don't be intimidated by the line outside. This location of Bao's Pastry is their first US location in the heart of Flushing. Their lines start outside, but move very quickly. We probably were in and out in 5 minutes which included the wait time to get in. As you enter they have baskets to help hold the baked goods as you make your way through the bakery. You can see from the outside and inside all the hard working staff create all the delicious pastries. All the products are self serve except the Portuguese egg tarts where they is one staff asking how much you want. Each of the items have signs labeling what they are and ingredients. What I really appreciate is that the shelf life is also listed on the signs, so you know how long you can have them at home until their peak freshness is gone. The cashiers help check the customers out and pack the bags with sporks and disposable gloves for eating. I got the Seaweed Crispy Floss Cakes, Taro Snow Puff Cakes and the Golden Portuguese Tarts. The Seaweed Crispy Floss Cakes had a thin layer of kewpie mayo in the middle. The cakes were puffy and had nice texture differences with the pork floss, seaweed and sponge. The Taro Puff Cakes were fluffy sponge cakes with a smooth and creamy taro paste in the middle. I like that it wasn't super sweet. The Golden Portuguese tarts were the real winner for me. They were a nice big size with a crispy and flakey crust and a smooth and creamy custard middle. I would come back just for those. Overall had a great experience and would return in the future. read more

TLDR: If you want to just try some items I would highly highly recommend stopping by at night (but know that they may be sold out of some of the more popular items) but there is typically little to no line. Ive had a few of their items now and by far #1 item is the pork floss + seaweed bun. Its sweet, salty and savory and the cake itself is soft and pillow-y. I would consider a must try! Other favorite items include the almost crisp (great almond to dough ratio and not too sweet, and keeps well), and the butter mochi (must eat day off as it does not keep well) Some other items Ive tried but didnt love includes the: - taro puff cake - soft sponge cake halves (almost like a whoopie pie) with a taro filling. Its okay - milk puff cake - same as above but instead of taro filling it uses a milk cream that mainly tastes of evaporated milk read more

Heard all the hype about this place so I lined up for about 10 minutes on a Saturday night to try it out. This is a takeout only shop and luckily the line moves quickly despite how long it is. My favorite was the coffee flavored pork floss and I would definitely get it again. The original flavor was fine but basic. The taro cake was good as it was not too sweet but I wouldn't get it again. They sold out of the bigger boxes by the time I got there but I hope they come up with more varieties soon. This place is ok but expensive for what it is. read more

So many mixed reviews, but it looks interesting with the workers looks like a lab workers, and long line outside. Really not bad, some things are better than other. The only thing lacking for me is the seaweed crispy floss. Egg tarts are good, not the best I had. I would get it the taro one again. However, I wouldn't recommend waiting in line. It's good, but not worth the hype. read more

I came here since it's the first US store of this Chinese bakery chain. They are known for meat floss cakes and egg tarts. The line was super long (1-2 hour wait) at 4pm but I came later at 7:30pm and there was much less of a wait like 5 minutes. However, most items were sold out. I still managed to order the caramel croissant tart, the taro snow puff cake, and the seaweed meat floss cake. They put it in a cooler bag with gloves and forks which was nice. I liked the egg tart and the seaweed meat floss cake, would pass on the taro snow puff cake. The pastries are tasty and affordable, but don't know it's worth the 1-2 hour wait if you came earlier. I would wait 3 months for the hype to die down (like every new place in NYC haha). read more

I was lucky to not have to wait in a long line and came out with some fun treats to try! Their pastries weren't too sweet and I absolutely loved the taro egg tart. I plan to try their other treats on my next trip here but definitely returning for that taro! read more

This place always have a long line but it does move so the wait is not too long. It's a little chaotic with so many people In a small space. I really like the egg tart and seaweed floss cake. The egg tart is always fresh, crispy and tastes great. The seaweed floss cake is surprisingly good as well. The saltiness from the pork floss and the sweetness of the cake filling is a good combination. Not a fan of the taro puff cake and taro egg tart. They do occasionally have new items for a limited time so it is worth checking out now and then. read more

I forgot to take photos but the pastry here is LIFE CHANGING! This spot is popular in Beijing and their first location in the US is in our very own Flushing. I highly recommend trying the coffee pork floss pastry and croissant egg tart. So decadent and worth every penny. You'll see a queue likely when visiting but it goes by quick. They have everyone walking through the store where you also get to see the staff making everything fresh through the glass. Go go go! read more

Loved it! I went on a Friday afternoon and there was no lines. I got the following: - taro snow puff cake: not too sweet, super light. It wasn't my favorite but don't mean I wouldn't get again. Flavor wise, the taro was subtle and there wasn't much flavor in general but texture wise, I loved how soft everything was. - egg tarts: I got 3 different kinds-- the taro, original and caramel. All delicious! Buttery flaky crust and creamy custard that's not too sweet and not too eggy in taste. - seaweed floss cake: would get this again! I loved this. - almond crackers: not too sweet and a great snack. Got these for my parents and they enjoyed them! When we left, there was a line so it's really about timing. As my first time, it was a bit overwhelming because you don't want to hold up the line, but at the same time you're overwhelmed by all the choices. Definitely a bakery to come back to! read more

The line was long but moved pretty quickly. Love the bright ambiance and how you could see all the workers making the products fresh. My favorites: the taro egg tart and caramel flower shaped egg tart !! The crust on all of them are sooo flaky and crispy even when bought them to savour the morning after, it was still so fresh. Would definitely come back for more and taste more items! It is pricey at $3 per tart though. Other items like pork floss were also $3 each but you had to buy them in 2 pk and the original coconut taro floss was more of a neutral flavor vs the coffee floss was a stronger flavor depending on what you'd prefer. For a more traditional bao taste like the Chinese adults/elderly, they preferred the floss buns as it felt more traditional and less sugary than the tarts but they still loved the tarts too! read more

The line is so long every day for this place you would think they were giving away food. Some days, the line is more than an hour long but luckily for me, I caught it at a good time and only waited five minutes, so I'd recommend not to bother unless the line is shorter. I love the open concept kitchen and knowing that everything is made fresh in house. I a few things to try out for the first time, including their popular egg tarts and meat floss cake. I also got a bag of milk raisin cookies and a taro cake. I liked everything except for the taro cake only because I prefer it sweetened. The eggs tarts were delicious, but it's best to eat fresh. I got two and saved one for later and it was definitely not the same afterwards. Overall, I enjoyed the pastries, but I do wish they sold smaller portions as most things come in prepackaged bags. read more

I came in around 8:30 pm on a Friday, it was busy inside, but line moved really fast. It probably took me 2 mins to get inside. By that time, most things were all sold out, they did still have a good amount of their original floss cake (dried seaweed), so that's what I got. I got a box, which comes with 2 cakes. I tried stopping by on a Saturday morning, but the line was just too long. I happened to be in the area on a Thursday afternoon and decided to give it another shot, this time there was no line, so I went in. Unfortunately, they were sold out of the cream puff with boba and water chestnut, which was what I originally came for. I ended up picking up a few pork floss with seaweed cakes and a pork floss cake instead (recommended by a friend), and they were all delicious. Definitely worth the visit. I'm looking forward to going back to try to get the cream puff next time. (and buy more pork floss seaweed cakes). read more

I saw videos of this place in on my Instagram algorithm. After taking the long subway ride from the city to Flushing, I just so happened to walk pass this place while checking the area out. I was so excited and the line WAS NOT LONG! I had overheard a lady getting into the back of the line behind me how the line is usually all the way down the block and wrapped around the corner. I was maybe the 8th person in line. It was like a miracle and after about 5 mins, I was in and grabbing my first of many items. The popular "ball" is basically like 2 super soft and fluffy cake sandwiching a taro filling. It also comes rolled in pork floss and variations of it. I really liked it with the pork floss. They also had a 4 pack of Portuguese egg tarts and salted duck egg in that light flaky pastry. I am terrible with the Chinese names since it's not my main language so forgive me. What I really liked is how they tell you how long each of the different items will keep. From a single day to the more delicate pastries to 14 days for the salted duck egg pastry. That really helped control me from over purchasing and over indulging on my food greed. Definitely will be back next time I am in Flushing. read more

Bao pastry's finally came to flushing! Is the hype really worth it? Waiting in line does move, I think how the workers prepare the bakery is great. They are covered head to toe so you don't have to worry about germs or someone sneezing while they are making it. It's glass windows so you can see it. However waiting in line and trying their bakery didn't wow me. I did enjoy the seaweed pork floss, that was prob my favorite thing there. I had better egg tarts so that was mediocre. Mochi was alright but eating them fresh was better than waiting an hour when I got to the car. They do tell you it's best within 2 hours of purchasing. I wouldn't be waiting in line again for this. If I walk by and crave it I would pick up the pork floss w seaweed that's it. read more

Some items can be skipped imo but I love the egg tarts. It's super crispy/crunchy on the outside and the inside is creamy and sweet. Got lucky and waited about maybe 20mins on a random weekday. Got the egg tart, taro snow puff cake, jujube soft pastry, and xiao bei floss cake. Overall everything was just ok - definitely not worth the wait some people are waiting for. The floss cake was not for me though. I love pork floss but the filling inside wasn't my favorite. I thought the jujube soft pastry was surprisingly very good. It was flakey, buttery, and not too sweet. The egg tart was good as well. I thought the taro snow puff cake lacked flavor. I had to see what the hype was about, so I stood in the line haha. I only bought the taro snow puff cakes and the pineapple cake. Both were very good, well-made, and decently priced! The taro puff cake is really delicate and perfectly sweet. The pineapple cake is super dense, loaded, and is yummy on the inside & out! The line went super fast cause they were quick with checkout. long lines outside but moves fast .. Massive staff and prime location nr the subway station. They promote the meat floss but everyone seems to hunt for the egg tarts. I stopped by the store due to all the hype surrounding the egg tarts. As a big fan of egg tarts, I had high expectations. I tried the classic egg tart, which had a buttery cream filling and a perfectly flaky crust. However, I found it a bit dry for my taste. Overall, I still enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to try the other variety because it was late in the day, and there was still a long line of people waiting. The staff there were very helpful. read more

I got the egg tart, the pork floss custard(?) buns, and the milk buns. The egg tart was great! The shell stuck together and you can't pull it apart like other egg tarts. The shell was flaky and not as dense. The egg custard was great! It stayed warm even on my commute home from flushing during the winter. The milk buns are not too sweet. My only complaint is that the cake tasted heavily artificial vanilla. I'm not a fan of pork floss in general, especially not on dessert and the buns confirmed that I still don't like it. My partner thought it was great. This is their most popular item. The custard tasted like mayo to me. read more

The lines were so long that I wondered what all the buzz was about. Is it worth the wait?!?!? For a unique place that has unusual tarts, I would say yes if the wait was under half an hour. The tarts were flaky with a slight crunch. They had a few different varieties of tarts. The taro egg tart was a family favorite. The seaweed crispy floss was a sweet and savory combo. I liked it but its an aquired taste. Not popular with the little ones. The cookies were rich and buttery and sprinkled with poppy seeds on the edge. Excellent with tea! Plastic gloves come with your purchase! All in all, nice addition to Flushing. Worth another visit! Note to those who was to see how it's made, the have a window in the left front where they construct one of the macron like treats.
