Went to flushing today and noticed this bakery. Upon entering, there is a nice all around viewing of all the pastries being made. We had to try out the different types of tarts, egg tart and taro. We also tried a matcha and chocolate filled dessert. We just grabbed what we wanted and went to the counter to pay. It was packed with people inside and the interior wasn't too big, but the lines moved pretty quickly. From all the ones we tried, they were all delicious. The line looks long but it moves quickly. Once you get inside you can shop around on a line and pick up whatever you want to put into the basket. When you get to the egg tart counter is when you can order the fresh egg tarts. Then you proceed to pay. They have an open concept so you can see all the pastries chefs doing their thing. The golden Portuguese egg tart $2 was really good. Flaky on the outside and warm and eggy in the inside. The taste was on point. The seaweed crispy floss cake ($5 for two) wasn't for me. The pastries honestly is quite food and you can see it being made as you were in line waiting to take your pick of what is left in stock depending on the time of the day you are going there. We saw quite a few people carrying the bright yellow Bao's Pastry bags while roaming through Tangram Mall. We were reminded that it was the bakery that went viral a while ago. BTW, that's why companies give out tote bags as swags - a cheap and effective way for advertisement that apparently works! Supposedly its very first location in the US, this famous Beijing bakery (Bao Sifu) opened this Flushing location a few months ago in February and became an instant hit. Naturally it's the right stop to end the day's food crawl. It was on a Saturday, heck, it was the Memorial Day Weekend, but the line wasn't bad at all - only 7-8 people in line outside the store. OK, it was rainy and cold but maybe the fad had dissipated after all these month. Lucky for us! The store's setup streamlined well. The line went inside the store, and after you paid on your way out, you're at the door. People said you can watch the entire pastry making process. They lied. The line kept moving. The truth is you could only get a glimpse before you have to move on or you get yelled lol. This place kind of reminded me of Din Tai Fung - behind the glass panels were 20 some staff, diligently doing their part of the pastry making assembly. We got their famous signature Seaweed Crispy Floss Cake (Xiao Bei, meaning "small shell"). It's a must-try because it's so unique: a light, fluffy sponge cake on the inside, filled with mayonnaise cream, and coated in a savory mixture of pork floss and seaweed shavings. The taste is interesting in a great way, perfectly balancing sweet with savory, and crunchiness with fluffiness. It is very messy to eat, however! I'd recommend eating it with a fork at a table so you can salvage all the pork floss and seaweed that falls off lol. I have to admit that my expectations were unrealistically high, after seeing all the social media hype. The problem with all the social media hype is, your expectations are heightened...sometimes disappointingly so. So take your expectations down a notch, and you will love Bao's Pastry! It was still very crowded, with a steady flow of customers but there was no line to get in. Yayyy! As everyone has reported, the interior of the bakery is U-shaped, so just follow the line, and the line will run smoothly. Pickup items along the showcases. You can order specific tarts at the window, but otherwise, just keep going. Before you know it, you end up at the cash registers. Items are a little pricey for what it is. We picked up these items: -- Coffee Pork Floss Cakes: I didn't love it but then again, I didn't hate it either. (The mayo threw me off). lol -- Golden Egg Yolk Pastry: maybe it's just me, but it didn't really taste like egg yolk to me. And it was extremely dry. You definitely need a beverage with this pastry. -- Egg Tarts (original): the original tart is great! Sometimes simplicity wins! -- Egg Tarts (caramel): although I'm generally not a fan of caramel, this tart was really good! I would get this again. -- Egg Tarts (cream cheese): warning, there is no egg custard in this cheese tart. It's more of a tart shell filled with cream cheese. If you like cream cheese, you'll love this one. In February 2026, Bao's Pastry, a viral Chinese pastry shop, opened their first US location in Flushing. When Bao's Pastry first opened, the lines were crazy long so I've been waiting for the hype to die down a bit. The first time I visited Bao's Pastry in March, I had to wait just 10 minutes. Though after trying their pastries, I completely understand why people line up. Bao's Pastry freshly bakes floss cakes, egg tarts, snow puff cakes, butter mochi, and milk-flavored Taosu cookies. Everything is made and baked in-store and there are open-view kitchens. Bao's Pastry was founded by Mr. Bao Caisheng in 2004 in Beijing under the name "Bao Zai Pastry House." The brand was officially renamed "Bao's Pastry" in 2005. The store is not that big and the lines move. My favorite is the Oozing Lava Cheese Tart ($4.00). The shell is buttery and the cheese is so rich. It's absolutely amazing and a must try! I've had the snow puff cake taro flavor ($6.00), velvet taro egg tart ($3.00), golden Portuguese egg tart ($2.00), coffee crispy floss cake ($5.00), and milk and raisin tiny pastry ($9.00). The snow puff cake was very soft and the taro had good flavor. In my opinion, nothing compares to the richness and taste of the Oozing Lava Cheese Tart. At checkout, they even give you disposable plastic glove and cutlery for you to enjoy the pastries. After my first time coming to Bao's Pastry, I've been a few additional times just to get the Oozing Lava Cheese Tart. There are still lines, but it is definitely worth waiting in and it moves fast. My parents were enticed by the long line outside when they were in flushing so they picked up a bunch of stuff for us to try out. Taro snow puff cake. Basically sponge cake with lots of whipped cream and a taro cream filling. This was okay, it wasn't too sweet and heavy on the whipped cream. Taro oatmeal crispy floss cake. A pork floss covered sponge cake with taro filling. We also tried seaweed crispy floss cake. The seaweed tasted like the seaweed they use to wrap kimbap so not much flavor being added to the cake. It'd be better if they used roasted seaweed pieces. I liked the flavor of the floss the most. Also tried the coffee crispy floss cake...it tasted like coffee so good for those who like coffee flavored desserts. Golden yolk pastry. A salted egg yolk pastry that kind of reminded me of a mooncake with the lotus filling surrounding the egg yolk. The pastry was quite flaky on the outside and bite sized. Spongecake with taro mochi filling. I'm not a big fan of taro flavored desserts so it was just okay for me. Cheesecake tart. The filling was soft almost like yogurt. Good for fans of lava like cheesecake fillings. Velvet taro egg tart. This was a good egg tart! It had a custard creamy middle with a bit of taro flavor too. I prefer naisnow's more though. Almond crisp. This is thin and light in flavor so it was easy to snack on. The cookies were very crispy. Milk flavored taosu were okay. They were a bit dry and might need to be paired with a drink. Overall they're definitely doing a different take on the typical chinese bakery goods which makes it stand out in the food scene of flushing. Update: stopped by again to pick up some egg yolk pastry and almond cookies for the family. The staff were very organized in terms of keeping the line orderly. Once inside, it was a very streamlined flow from entering, grabbing a basket and filling it with goods to checking out at the 3 registers by the door. Ok since I was in the area, I went to check what they had available...this time they had more items available...Im usually around Flushing when things are closing, but Bao's Pastry is very popular with lines all the time...they had a lot of bagged items and the bland milky bao. But ooh I noticed the caramel egg tart and within seconds of just walking near the Plexiglass...an employee asked if we needed help. So L quickly asked for 4 which I thought was too much. We ate 2 a hr later even though it was late .. it was really flakey. The egg custard part isn't as firm as a traditional one.. maybe more custardy..but it was good. Sweet but not too sweet. At $3 each...the egg tarts were so much better than what we tried before. We ate the other 2 a day later. I've been wanting to try this place but I waited till there were no lines. I went on a week day recently and was able to get in right away and shop for what I wanted. There are no seating so you just shop and take your goodies home. My favorite was the taro milk cake. When I was walking around flushing, so many people were carrying bags from this place that I had to check it out. As soon as I went there, there was a line of ~10 ppl outside the doors but it moved fast and we were in by ~10 min. It was cool to see them actively making fresh baked goods through the clear glass window My friends and I trialed a couple of their goods (love that they give packets of gloves for those who don't want to get messy from all of the pork floss, taro, or cream). Our collective favorite wasthe cream puffs. Some of my other favorites would be the taro egg tart (the taro is so fluffy, I usually dislike red bean but their version is a good addition to the egg tart), and their almond cookies (good snack that I've been slowly savoring at home). There are cute plastic reusable bags that they give you, though this most recent time I went, I noticed that they gave it to those who bought more items, not for my friends who bought 2 or less. I was in the area & stopped by twice with only a few people in line (rainy weekday evening & a late morning on a weekday). Have had their (was told best seller) Crispy Pork Floss Cake & bag of Butter Mochi (this might be a new item, saw it on social media). It seems like their popular items are small disc-like sponge cakes sandwiched with a cream filling in between, then lightly covered in it (either taro flavor buttercream. Or plain & rolled in a sea weed pork floss mixture or coffee flavored mixture. Like a Asian higher-end hostess cake. The quality ingredients & items were fresh (since everything's being made & refilled in front of you). But I'm not a fan of these ($4.50-ish for two) giant soft oreo-like pastries (3-4 bites) The cream inside actually tasted like mayo or a plain buttercream (non sweet) & the crispy (generous) topping was a but too seafoody for me. Don't usually eat pork floss & the idea is interesting..., but I liked the pork floss part here. Crispy bits of sweet salty bacon-like flavor. The $8 bag (8 pieces) of Butter Mochi was really good though! I didn't see any cases or signage with them, but I asked the worker at the Egg Tart window and he grabbed a bag from the window FYI. It's a little indulgent for 1 person & I gave away 1 or 2 to people waiting in line. The simple butter mochi is also a disc-shaped thing (a theme here?) that might have been made in big chestnut-shaped steel mold. The glutinous rice flour wasn't too sweet and the edges were nicely caramelized & crispy. Super good chew to crisp ratio! (4 stars for this) BUT I don't know if they keep well overnight and the two that I left in the bag got really hard the next day. Tried slightly warming them in a toaster oven, but they weren't the same. My advice would be to eat them on the same day or if you know how to store & reheat these, let me know. None of the other pastries looked too special and things that I can't find elsewhere. People seem to like their egg tarts, but they looked on the smaller side and there's other bakeries in the area who makes them well enough. Arriving in Flushing for my annual winter NY trip, I saw a lot of commotion and a long line the moment I stepped out of the subway. Of course I had to jump on the hype train and stood in line to see what all the fuss was about. Apparently this is a famous place in China called "Bao Shifu" and this was their first location in the states. Famous for their seaweed crispy floss cakes, egg tarts, taro snow puff cakes and a number of other pastries. There was only a limited number of items available when I went and they were all flying off the shelf. They had a large number of bakers visible through the glass where you could watch them in the kitchen churning out the delicacies. I can confirm the egg tarts and the seaweed crispy floss cakes was worth the wait. The only item I got that I didn't care for was the taro snow puff cakes. It didn't have much flavor and was very sticky and messy to eat. I would definitely go back just for those seaweed crispy floss cakes though! I was also impressed with the quality control. A friend picked up a selection of goodies for us to share including the Seaweed Crispy Floss Cake ($5 for 2pcs), Taro Oatmeal Crispy Floss Cake ($6 for 2pcs), Portuguese Egg Tart ($2 for 1pc), Matcha Milk Bread ($6 for 2pcs), Taro Milk Bread ($10 for 4pcs), and Milk & Raisin Tiny Cookies ($9 for bag). I'm not much of a cookie fan, but these tiny cookies are so easy to snack on with their bite-size. There's a fun balance of the crunchy cookie and chewy raisin mixed into every bite. Both milk breads were also so unique and airy with a light cream coated for the various flavors. This was a tad messy to eat, although they do provide gloves and spoons for you (such a thoughtful gesture). They are known for their egg tarts, which was creamy and decadent but there's so many good egg tart spots around. For me, the real winner is the crispy floss cake that uses the same milk bread but coated with chicken floss to create a nice sweet and savory treat. There's a lot of yummy pre-packaged buns and cakes in the middle of the store, but the most popular items are their egg tarts made fresh, behind the Plexiglas- where customers can view all the pastries being made. Got their lava cheese tart and their popular Portuguese egg tart. I thoroughly enjoyed the Portuguese egg tart more than the cheese one. The crust is a flaky buttery croissant crust unlike the typical ones you find at Asian bakeries, it texture is wonderfully balanced with the rest of the egg filling. At opening there's still a line out the door and fifteen deep which is amazing considering who was on line with me. I have to say I don't normally see native advanced age folks waiting with me on a line for sweets ever. These sweets are a bit pricey relative to other posts in the area as well. I had considered the fact that maybe it was a bit too early in the day for a sweet but once I observed this phenomenon, I knew this was going to be good. I ended up spending more than I expected, just following the line which was a procession through the store, and grabbing items like others did as well. Everything is laid out for you to stay on the line and stroll right up to the register with your basket of treats. Variations like Tiramisu tarts, pork floss buns, and almond crisps lined your path through, the main star were of course the caramelized egg tarts and the cheese filled, which as you progressed into the center of the store, someone was there to take your order and box them up. There is no where to sit inside the store, you take your treats along with a small packet that contains a tiny fork and gloves which are quite thoughtful. Both versions of the tarts I tried, were great. The crispy flakey shelled caramelized egg filled was silky and not too sweet. Egg Tart (8.5/10) - Some people might find it a bit too buttery like I did. However, that flaky crispy crust is by far one of the best in NYC imho. I also really enjoyed the creaminess of the egg custard. Taro Snow Puff Cake (7/10) - Such a wonderful taro filling between two pieces of fluffy and delicate cake. I might have preferred a tastier outer layer to contrast the rest of the product. Seaweed Crispy Floss Cake (7/10) - The crispy pork floss with seaweed was awesome. Sadly, just too much sweet mayo inside that was unnecessary. Almond Crisp (8/10) - Hard to really screw this one up, but glad to find a good version regardless. The almond flavor shines through the crunchy cookie. Butter Mochi (7.5/10) - Fried mochi that doesn't feel oily or too chewy, just right sitting around at room temperature. Milk Flavored Taosu (7/10) - Somewhat dry for me, but these cookies are meant to be on the drier side. Flavor is decent and goes well with coffee. A 5 minutes wait line at the door on a weekday 11 am. It opens at 10:30 am daily. I got: -seaweed crispy floss cake : 2 for $5. I find the creme inside too sweet and too heavy. Outside has good crispy seaweed flavor. Perfect to pair with coffee but not by itself. - Taro oatmeal crispy floss cake: 2 for $6 : the creme inside was even sweeter. Outside not as crispy as the seaweed one. - butter mochi : 6 for $8. Mini size. Chewy inside. Crispy outside but it was a bit hard for me on the edges. Different tarts are popular items too but that has its own waiting line. I didn't bother. Overall, I wouldn't especially make a trip there. If I happen to pass by, I Would get the seaweed again. Original egg tarts are good! and the almond crisps, everything else is just ok. I tried the tiramisu egg tart and that was skippable, same for caramel egg tart. Long line but it moves quickly. read more

I don't often visit Flushing but I just so happen to walk by this bakery and saw a long line. I asked the worker if there's any special promotion going on today and he gave me the most lackluster response. He told me to ask the workers inside. No promotions but the store is very lively and the wait was about 15 minutes. You can see the bakers putting together the pastries. I brought the golden Portuguese egg tarts. $2 each. It was okay. Crispy shells and the egg fillings wasn't as creamy as the ones I had in Macau or in Brooklyn. Xin fa bakery in brooklyn in much better and the portion is bigger for the same price. read more

I stopped by the store due to all the hype surrounding the egg tarts. As a big fan of egg tarts, I had high expectations. I tried the classic egg tart, which had a buttery cream filling and a perfectly flaky crust. However, I found it a bit dry for my taste. Overall, I still enjoyed it. Happened to be in the area on a weekday and there was no line. (There's always a line during the weekend.) I asked what was the best seller/most popular item and was directed to the floss & seaweed. Got a few of those and some Portuguese egg tarts. Unfortunately, I was not a fan of the floss & seaweed, the texture and flavor combination did not appeal to me. However, the egg tarts were very flaky and quite good. The store is well organized and clean and the staff were very efficient. read more

$36 for a few pastries plus a long line? I don't understand the hype. First , the store is very clean and aesthetically pleasing. However in the heart of flushing with many bakeries and sweet, this is just overhyped and overpriced. Their meat floss cake is one of their specialty but it's also easily accessible in other bakeries. Egg tarts are good but way overpriced for its size. Their matcha and taro cakes were confusing. Literally just two round cake sandwiched with some cream in the middle and the slap some matcha or taro cream. An extremely messy way to eat it. Light in flavor and don't expect it to be sweet.
