Crispy Chicken and Garlic Ham and Cheese
    Agnes Y.

Needed to get some snacks for a flight and came across Barley Time. The store was spacious, clean, and modern looking. There was a good variety of bread, pastry, and cake to choose from. They also serve drinks. Bought a Corn and Ham, Garlic Ham and Cheese, Crispy Chicken, and Cream Bun. Everything was tasty and fresh. Prices were reasonable. Checking out was efficient, employees were friendly and helpful.

A small bakery on the corner of Prince Street that's adjacent to the Tangram Mall and across the street from Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao. Pretty close to the 7 train. Looks neat and clean when I first go inside. They seem to have a smaller selection of bread and pastries compared to other bakeries in the area. Concept of their bread: it's supposed to be healthier which I do agree because it does taste like not as sweet. Some variety of cake and desserts like the jiggly bear pudding in the glass display cases along with hot/iced drinks (e.g. coffee or fruit teas) to be ordered and made from the LED menu screens. Not much of a line when you go up to pay. Takes both cash and card. Service from staff is alright, but not rude or impatient. They speak mainly Chinese and understand some English. Not much ambiance to feast your eyes on, just your usual standard space with few tables & chairs for customers to sit while eating your baked goods. Definitely a grab-and-go eatery for the most part. Price range is similar to 85° Degrees inside Tangram but less expensive than Paris Baguette. I like how the size of their bread is typically bigger than my face for the price. Bought the following: 1) Oreo Cream Bread 2) Regular Cream Bread 3) Fried Chicken Sandwich Bun 4) Coffee Walnut Bread Oreo Cream Bread (5/5) Overall doesn't taste too sweet even though it's chocolate flavored. Bread texture is very fluffy and soft. Half softened oreo cookies are stacked on the cream in between of the bread as garnish. Regular Cream Bread (5/5) Longish piece of bread with lightly-whipped cream in the center. Doesn't taste too sweet like the Oreo Cream Bread. Good pairing with a cup of coffee. Fried Chicken Sandwich Bun (2.5/5) Chicken is too flimsy and soggy in texture - not crispy & not savory anymore due to being sandwiched in between of the bun for a long period of time. Can't really tell that it's fried chicken either unless comparing it to a pic from online. Coffee Walnut Bread (4/5) Has subtle aroma and flavor of coffee with diced walnut as garnish on top. Taste wise is very pleasant without too much sweetness in general. Would buy any of these breads again with the exception of the chicken option.

This bakery is situated on one of the busiest corners in Flushing on Prince Street where my memories of 66 Taiwanese Restaurant use to reside. It had been several other establishments in between, but now providing baked goods, pastries and beverages for the young crowds living or visiting the area. Due to its prime location, I assume the rent is extremely high. Unfortunately, that is reflected in their pricing, which makes their products on the high end for bakeries in Flushing. The quality is not bad. Everything I had so far was decent. With that said, when I pay their level of prices, I want top notch quality. Comparatively speaking, I prefer 85 Degrees just down the block at similar prices, or Apollo one block in the other direction for cheaper options. Pro Tip: Right before they close nightly at 10:00pm, they have a mystery bag of 5 random items for $6. I have purchased this a couple of times and felt that the deal is well worth it. This deal is now the main reason I still come back to this bakery.

Plenty of baked goods, single slice cakes and drinks! I got the strawberry bread that was shaped as a teddy bear, it was good! Wish we came earlier as they ran out of full sized croissants. Dropping a star because the cashier was a bit aggressive. I barely saw the second cashier as he was hiding behind the signs and the way he tried to grab my attention was kind of rude. He yelled "next" and when I didn't hear him, his coworker yelled it a few times. There could have been a gentler way to go about it. I am sure I am not the only one mesmerized by the glass display while awaiting to be checked out.

Passing through Flushing always gives me heart palpitations. If I want to grab a quick coffee I have to hope there is a parking spot. Otherwise, hasta la vista baby. Luckily, the stars aligned and I found a parking spot next to Barley Time. This is a cute bakery! I walk and I see some unique looking pastries. I decide on a bag of delicate sesame cookies and order a Brown Sugar Boba Tea. The service was quick and efficient. I had my drink, walked back to my car and all is right with the world. Barley Time looks like a popular spot, it was pretty packed during lunchtime.

It's a small bakery, but it has plenty of variety of breads. Towards the end of the day they start running out quickly. Honestly, the meat breads are pretty good as it has a decent amount of meat to bread ratio for a bakery. I like getting the meat floss breads because I feel like the cream sauce that they have in it goes really well with the meat floss.

So many delicious bread choices! They definitely have some bread, we ended up not getting any but everything looked good! Got a grapefruit tea and a rose latte and both were delicious. The tea had great flavor and used real fruit and the rose latte was perfect. It was pretty busy so it took a while for my latte. It's super cute inside too and there's seating if you want to stay and eat your breads. They also have the most beautiful cakes! Really want to try next time!

Some pastry selections on a Saturday afternoon
    Susan C.

Motivated by seeing this new-ish storefront, I curiously entered the store on a Saturday afternoon around 2:30pm and was pleasantly surprised at the breadth of bread, pastry and cake offerings and their bright, clean setup. Being a Chinese bakery their flavors for pastries, breads and fillings leaned Asian, like matcha, red bean, sesame, chestnut, rose, taro and variations of these with cheese. Of course there were also items with coffee, cream, bacon, and more Western profiles. I picked up a "pull-apart bread" $4.25 (that was the label on the tray), and a chopped pecan pineapple-style bun (it had a layer of tender craquelin - as the French call it - on top, no actual pineapple). I was very impressed by the light lamination on the pull apart bread--the top was brushed with a very light coating of sugar syrup, a perfect amount to add a tinge of sweetness while still allowing you to taste the savory butteriness of the bread itself. The pecan pastry $3.75 was lovely too, again a balanced light amount of sweetness, a nicely developed rise of the dough inside, and just buttery enough. Good value for the quality. The bakery is small with only a handful of seats right inside the entrance to the left. Checkout counter is up a couple stairs to the right, above which the menu for drinks and other items are displayed. Also located at the counter in the display case are cakes and some chilled dessert selections. They carried items like mousse and tiramisu, roll cakes, cheesecake and larger cakes (complete or by the slice). The presentation is competitive with other newer Asian bakeries in the area. Would love to come back and try some other items!

Great bakery with similar items as other asian bakeries but more creative combinations/flavours: Matcha, Taro, Coconut, Redbean, Strawberry cream, Custards, Nuts, Garlic, Cheese, Hot dogs, Chicken Sandwich, Pork Floss (Rou Song) Price Ranges from about $2.50-$7.00? for bread-type items. Accepts credit cards, no cash discounts. Would come back =D

My sales receipt, January 13, 2025

Teddy bear bread for $2.95! Teddy bears are my best friend. After reading the reviews I was lured to attain this bear bread. I scanned the bakery glass encasement and there were many baos and sandwiches. Barley Time baked goods make a good breakfast or before bedtime snack. I did not see any traditional Chinese Cha siu bao 叉燒包, caa1 siu1 baau1 as it is my default bao. However, this visit was specifically not caa1 siu1 baau1. I also hoped for green tea filling buns. My eyes was affixed to the coveted bear bread and it was very enticing. It was very adorably cute that I could not bear to eat it. The bear bread taste good with a strawberry cream filling. The bear bread was intact when bitten. No comment for their boba tea as I did not purchase any. I would surely return for another bear bread and fruit tea with my default topping Chinese herbal grass jelly 涼粉 (loeng4 fan2, liang2 fen3). Customer service is average. I had to request several times for a measly sales receipt which, at first, went to oblivion. Take caution when approaching the cashier as there are steps. The interior is very bright. Barley Time is very assessable via MTA NYC Transit buses and 7 train in Flushing, Queens, NYC.

    Chocolate flat croissant
    Yvonne M.

Cute busy bakery with pretty pastries and desserts. Saw this flat croissant and thought so interesting, really convenient to eat! It wasn't as crispy as regular croissants but flavor is good. Customer service is okay, they were busy so trying to rush but when I was paying my Apple Pay, it wasn't registering on their tap so took some time.

During my last visit for pastries, Barley Time was pretty disappointing. So, naturally, I was hesitant to give it another go. But there I was, in Flushing early in the morning with slim pickings (everything else was closed, of course). With limited options, I thought, why not dive into their drinks menu? I took a chance on their Large Cheese Foam Peach Oolong Tea and snagged a passionfruit drink (or dessert) from their open fridge (it looked lonely and in need of a home). To my delight, the Oolong Tea was surprisingly good - not too sweet, with a cheese foam layer that was generous enough to make a dairy farmer proud. The drink was delicious and far cheaper than the exorbitant offerings at Song Tea ($8 for a large). My Barley Time beverage was a mere $5.75 a bargain in comparison. The only negative was their Apple Pay policy - you need to spend a minimum of $10 to use it (I suppose they think my money isn't good enough unless I part with more of it). But, hey, not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. In the future, I'll likely return to Barley Time for drinks since I did enjoy this one. Keeping it a 3 out of 5 stars taking into consideration both the pastries and the drinks.

I really love coming here when I'm in town. They have the most amazing pastries that are such good quality and so beautiful. I love bringing them home to my family.

We walked into a no frills space where the prices are among the lowest we have found for fresh baked goods in the area, with most items running under two dollars. The black sesame and red bean buns are the items most worth seeking out, and they have earned repeat visits from people who plan their trips to Flushing around stopping here. The black sesame in particular has a depth of flavor that the more common sweet bun fillings do not match. We also tried the taro bread, which is soft with a smooth filling, another reliable choice for anyone who enjoys that flavor profile. The potato salad bun is a more unusual option that has developed its own following among regulars. The buns are individually wrapped for freshness, and the overall quality on the baked goods side is consistent and genuinely good for the price. The savory side of the menu covers ham and egg sandwiches, rice rolls, and dim sum options that function as a quick meal rather than a destination dining experience. We found results there more variable, and the baked goods are where the bakery is most dependable. For an affordable, no frills bakery stop in Flushing that delivers on value and a few standout buns, Rainbow Bakery is a reliable choice. We would come back specifically for the black sesame bun and keep our expectations calibrated on the savory side.

There's a lot of bakeries who have basic or plain savory breads and a lot more sweet ones. I prefer savory over sweet so this was a nice stop for me. It can get packed and busy in here so it's really more of a grab and go type of bakery.

I walked into a simple, functional space with shelves and cases filled with buns, cakes, and packaged items meant more for quick pickup than sitting or browsing for long. The roasted pork buns and BBQ style buns were some of the most commonly picked items. I tried one and the bread was soft with a savory filling that leaned slightly sweet depending on the batch. Egg tarts are also part of the regular rotation, along with red bean buns and sponge cakes that stick to a more traditional bakery profile. The steamed buns section was a big part of the appeal here, especially for someone looking for quick, inexpensive food like pork buns or plain buns to take away. Prices are generally low compared to more modern bakeries in Flushing, which was a major reason I stopped in. Service was quick and straightforward, with my order handled fast even during a busy hour. The bakery has a high turnover of items throughout the day, so freshness can vary depending on timing, and selection is best earlier when the trays are more stocked. It is very much a grab and go spot rather than a place designed for dining in or browsing slowly. Overall, Maxin Bakery is a budget friendly Flushing bakery for basic Chinese baked goods and buns, best for quick snacks like pork buns, red bean buns, and egg tarts rather than specialty or dessert focused items.

I walked into a clean, well lit space designed for quick selection rather than lingering, and the display cases were filled with brightly decorated cakes and pastries that looked consistently fresh. The mango based cakes are the most consistent thing here. I tried one and found it light, creamy, and built around fresh fruit rather than overly heavy frosting, which made it easy to finish even after a full meal. The matcha cake also worked well, leaning more milky than bitter, with a soft sponge that held its structure without feeling dry. The pork floss cakes are one of the more interesting savory sweet options, and they came out better than I expected since they did not go overboard on sweetness. The croissants and egg tarts are solid supporting items rather than the main reason to come. The croissant I had was flaky with a noticeable butter layer, and the egg tart was best eaten warm as the custard tightens up when cold. The purple rice desserts are heavier but work if I want something more filling and texturally different from the fruit cakes. Service was generally efficient even when the bakery was busy, and the staff moved through orders quickly. Prices sit a bit higher than older style Flushing bakeries, but the tradeoff is cleaner presentation, more modern flavor combinations, and consistently fresh looking cakes.
