Bao's Pastry is another Chinese chain that recently made its way to the US. After hearing so many rave reviews, we decided to stop by and see what the hype is all about. The interior is modern, bright and very clean. All the pastries are made in house, and through the large windows, you can watch a team of 10-15 employees working efficiently in the kitchen, all wearing proper PPE. We tired the Portuguese egg tart, Taro egg tart and the seaweed crispy floss cake. The Portuguese egg tart has crispy crust and smooth rich egg custard filings, but the taro egg tart is even better if you are a taro lover. The crispy floss cake is unique, soft sweet cake paired with savory seaweed and pork floss created a surprisingly balanced flavor. The packaging is very thoughtful. They provided individually wrapped gloves and forks, made it very convenient to enjoy these pastries on the go. I can definitely see the appeal.
This is a relatively new and very popular Chinese bakery right in the middle of Downtown Flushing on Roosevelt. Compared to many Chinese bakeries I have been to, they're open relatively late, as they close at 9:30 P.M. daily, so it's possible to skip the giant lines for at least a good amount of time while still trying some fresh things if you arrive here by 7:30 or so. It was chaotic inside, and I eventually bought two things after perusing through the options. The first was the Golden Portuguese Egg Tart/金葡蛋挞/Po Tat for $2. Compared to some other places, I found the outside a tad crispier, which led to a larger crunch. The inside was pretty eggy, but I prefer the deeper flavor at a handful of other spots, with my golden standard (appropriately) being Golden Crispy. Overall, it was good. The other thing I bought was the $9 Hawthorn Soft Pastry/山楂软酥. This came with nine pieces, or something similar, with the shortbread pastry shell being much flakier than expected. The soft inside was lightly sour and sweet, which was pleasant. The texture contrast reminded me vaguely of a pineapple cake, but less jammy. Overall, I liked both things. I wouldn't mind going back and trying some of their other more unique pastries.
Line moves fast so don't be alarmed when you see it outside. Fan favorite is the mochi, chocolate scones and egg tarts. It's nice to be able to watch the pastry chefs at work
Favorite item was the milk taosu cookies. Perfect not-too-sweet cookies with perfect amount of bite but not too crumbly. The floss cakes are light and bouncy, not too sweet, but after eating two, you just don't want any more due to the sweetened mayo inside, which is probably why they package them in twos. Cod fish version was not fishy at all and has no mayo and is still light and fluffy. Mochi pudding was interesting. I don't hate or love it, but the textures are unique. I would recommend to get and try it yourself. Would I wait in a long line for this? No. Would I go back? Sure, if I'm in the area.
I was wow'ed by Bao's. They had a unique variety of pastries you don't typically see at asian bakeries. A matcha horn? Mochi pudding? Seaweed crispy floss cake? Tiramisu egg tarts? Say Whuh?! It's new, it's fun, it's different (to me that is). I came across them as I was making my way downtown to get some boba. I decided to stop by on the way back because they seemed like the busiest shop on the block. I also saw a lot of people walking around with cute yellow cooler bags from them and that was a sign for me to try them. Gotta see what the hype is about, am I right, am I right?! Apparently, Bao's is a pretty chain in China and Flushing is their first US location! Okay anyways you walk in, take a tray and try not to be in anybody's way because the shop is pretty small. There's good looking pastries everywhere. Cookies, cream puffs, breads, buns and of course egg tarts! I picked up a pair of matcha horns and mochi pudding because it looked intriguing. There were maybe like 4 different types of egg tarts to choose from. I went with the regular egg tart and grabbed an oozing cheese tart. I wanted to try everything but damn their prices weren't right and I could only eat so much. The matcha horns remind me of cannolis. They have a crispy other shell and a smooth and tasty filling. They were kinda small and expensive tho. $5 for 2 but they were fun to eat and not too sweet! The mochi pudding was something I've never encountered before. The pudding was smooth and creamy and had a subtle flavor to it, possibly milk? and the shell that kept the pudding together was slightly crispy and mochi textured. I loved it! My mom liked it, too. And she usually doesn't like a lot of things I recommend... The oozing cheese tart definitely oozed like lava. The tart shell was really good and paired well with the creamy filling. It's something you'd eat and not eat anything else for a while because it's on the heavy side. Like you need to drink a lot of water after to reset your stomach, and you'll be induced into a food coma. I saved the egg tart for the next day because I had reached my pastry limit for the day. I didn't have a toaster oven to warm it up, so I put it in the microwave for a few seconds. It was still flakey and the filling was smooth, had a splash of sweetness and was creamy. It was a tad bit smaller than the usual egg tarts I get at other places tho. Like I said the shop is kinda small and it's a U shape layout. And there's pastries on both sides of the shop and be sure to check everything out if you can. You could see the bakers and employees hard at work through the glass baking, assembling and organizing pastries. The employees will nicely pack your items in the yellow cooler bag and give you a glove and small ice pack to keep your hands clean and your pastries chilled. They don't have any seating. Just grab the pastries you want, pay and get out. We went to the New World Mall food court to try out the goods. Overall, great tasting pastries but they're kinda expensive. You could easily get carried away adding things to your tray and drop $25-30. Didn't really interact with employees too much but they were fast and very efficient. I would definitely come back, but my hope they'll make their way to the Bay one day!
The butter mochi from Bao's Pastry is my new obsession - the crispy edges and chewy center make this one fun to eat, and the flavor is rich but some how feels light. It would be impossible to eat just one, so it's a good thing they only sell them as a bag of 6. Service is efficient - just wait in line near what you want, put it in your little shopping basket then take to the register to check out. This place was hopping at 7pm on a Thursday night - bright and buzzy shop!
Wow, I have seen Bao's Pastry before on social media however never truly bothered to bat an eye at the sight of this shop since I'm a loyalist to 85C. Because it was our first time, we were a bit conservative and probably should've went HAM on taste testing- 1x Golden Portuguese Egg Tart 1x Lemon Crispy Floss Cake 1x Taro Egg Tart Everything is affordable and in line quality wise, while we came on a not so good weather day, it was still crowded in the shop. The egg tarts sadly were not that impressive and had the taste that I'm used to. The floss cake however was quite flavorful and filling, I think they're known more for this unique pastry. I can't wait to come back and try their other pastries-there is also an employee at the front of the line who helps with the ordering process to ensure things go smoothly and efficiently!
The hype finally died down after a month...came here on a Sunday @ noon- no lines out the door & no wait to pay, which was great. The bakery was clean, bright, everything yellow with a glass-walled open kitchen, completely stocked with a variety of pre-packaged pastries & treats, the egg tarts are kept behind the glass counter & are box to order, and the staff was very friendly & efficient. We got some of their golden Portuguese & caramel croissant egg tarts, taro snow puffs, milk flavored taosu and the coffee crispy floss cakes & fluffy floss rolls. The egg tarts tasted ok- I definitely had better- the custard filling were overly wobbly & fell apart and the crusts weren't crispy but rather soft & soggy. Not a fan of the taro puffs- the cream tasted artificial & unappealing. The taosu (walnut crisp cookies) were buttery, mildly sweet & had a delicate, crumbly texture- their good, my daughter loved them. And the coffee floss cakes + floss rolls were really delicious- light, fluffy sponge cake with mayo cream filling & coated in lots of pork floss Mmm...sweet & savory goodness :p We'll be back for more.
Bao's Pastry is a popular bakery chain from Beijing, China, that has expanded all the way to Flushing. There was a pretty long line when we stopped by a couple Sunday afternoons ago, but it moved really quickly. Before we knew it, we were asked to make a quick decision about what we wanted. Between the four of us, we bought two each of the following: * Golden Portuguese Yolk Pastry * Velvet Taro Egg Tart * Oozing Lava Cheese Tart * Croissant Egg Tart Caramel Flavor My personal favorite was the Golden Portuguese Yolk Pastry, which was absolutely perfect. The custard was creamy with just the right amount of sweetness and egginess, while the crust was flaky and buttery. The Oozing Lava Cheese Tart was incredibly cheesy, almost more of a savory dessert. It was delicious and addictive, but also pretty heavy. The Croissant Egg Tart Caramel was a favorite among our group, but I fount it a little too sweet. Lastly, the Velvet Taro Egg Tart had an airy and fluffy taro custard, but the taro flavor itself was pretty weak. Compared to the other three, this was easily the least memorable. They're also known for their Signature Pork Floss Cakes, which I wish I'd remembered to try. While the pastries were a bit hit or miss, the ones that hit were truly incredible. I'd definitely come back to try some of their other pastries, especially the pork floss cake. 8/16/2026 Flushing Food Crawl #10 of 11
I can't say much about the interior or service because a friend brought these goodies over for dessert one day. Goodness, these little dessert items were so good. I finished off 3 Portuguese Egg tarts by myself. I love the eggy, creamy center. The crust was very flaky. The Xiao Bei Milk Cake Taro Flavour and original Milk Flavor were so soft and fluffy. They were subtlety sweet and fragrant. The pork floss flavor was unusual but if you grew up with it, it was nostalgic. The scones were crumbly and tasty. The cream puff was chewy and the filling creamy. Nothing was too sweet and the flavors really go well with the delicate textures.
A very busy store and open kitchen concept where you can watch them make the goodies. Did not care for the floss breads and it wasn't for me. The coffee flavor was not strong and tasted more like a savory mayo meat floss bread. The milk mochi pudding bites were delicious and a nice treat.
This is a pretty legit operation. There's 10-15 workers churning out effort in the back, even after they close shop. We tried their taro tart, egg tart, and their seaweed ball things. Pretty solid and the favorite was the taro. Pricing like an Instagram item but the overall flavors are good. Interior is clean but the vibe is very rushed with the large traffic flow and in and out.
Food: This is a well-known bakery from China offering many kinds of baked goods and pastries. The place is always packed with people. Some baked goods include Portuguese egg tarts, taro puff cake, pork floss items, mochi puddings, cookies, tarts, and much more. Items are a hit or miss. I've tried a good number of items and only really enjoyed 1-2 items, not the majority. The best item is the butter mochi in my opinion. The egg yolk pastry is also decent; it's very similar to an egg yolk mooncake with lotus seed paste inside. Everything else I've tried including the egg tarts, cookies, and taro puff cake wasn't too special or impressive. Service: Service was neither good nor bad; staff are there to restock bakery items and to ring up your items. Ambiance: The bakery is a good size with many items on display, but there is no seating. You buy your items and take it to go. The bakery is set up in a U formation where you enter on one side, make the loop in one line to see the items, and pay at the cashier right before you exit. Bakery is nice, well-lit, and kept clean. There are huge glass windows where you can see staff in the back baking and preparing the goods. Overall, I would recommend this bakery at least once!

long lines outside but moves fast .. Massive staff and prime location nr the subway station. They promote the meat floss but everyone seems to hunt for the egg tarts. When I went on a weekday early evening, they only had the taro egg tarts ($3 each) which have a nice touch with red bean on the bottom. They seem to never have the plain egg tarts or caramel. Bag is nice and there are disposable gloves. I did like the taro egg tarts and would stick to that. read more
The lines were so long that I wondered what all the buzz was about. Is it worth the wait?!?!? For a unique place that has unusual tarts, I would say yes if the wait was under half an hour. The tarts were flaky with a slight crunch. They had a few different varieties of tarts. The taro egg tart was a family favorite. The seaweed crispy floss was a sweet and savory combo. I liked it but its an aquired taste. Not popular with the little ones. The cookies were rich and buttery and sprinkled with poppy seeds on the edge. Excellent with tea! Plastic gloves come with your purchase! All in all, nice addition to Flushing. Worth another visit! Note to those who was to see how it's made, the have a window in the left front where they construct one of the macron like treats. Straight down the center, back, You can look into the main kitchen where the "magic" happens. Everything sold is displayed around the store. Take a basket and pick and choose as you like. Checkout is on the right! read more
Viral bakery opens up their first location in NYC from Beijing so what does one do naturally? Drive and wait in line for 20 minutes in sub zero temps ofc because that's what sane people do. The whole store runs in a u shape so you cant exactly wander about but if youre as insane as me, def get the egg tarts which sell out crazy fast. Depending on who's guarding the egg tarts, they can be rude and limit you even though you waited in line just as long as the people in front of you who just copped 4 boxes of 4 egg tarts each. The star off if purely because I feel like they arent controlling lines well and they dont warn you if stuff inside sell out which definitely sucks. read more
New bakery with lines out the door. We waited over an hour and the line was around the block. we got an assortment of pastries. Personally the egg tarts were pretty mid as the crust was just not on point. I did like the topping of either taro or ube. The take out pastry was bomb. Loved the cookies and mung bean. If it wasn t for the hour long line this would be5 stars. read more
A newly opened bakery in Flushing and the first U.S. location of a franchise with 200+ shops across China is already creating major buzz, with lines out the door daily. Don't miss their egg tarts -- hands down some of the best I've had, with a crisp, buttery shell and smooth, flavorful filling. read more

The line is long, but tends to move fast. I got the pork floss cake w/ seaweed (2 for $5 or 6 for $12) and taro paste egg tart ($3 for 1). I brought extras so I can share with my co worker the next following day. I ask the employee there is these need to be refrigerated. She told me that only the taro egg tart needed to be refrigerated. Taro egg tart: The crust is good compare to the Chinese bakery in New York. The taro past and the egg in the middle does not impressed me. Pork floss cake w/ seaweed: I feel disguised after eating it. There is too much cream and nothing special about it. I don't get how there is cream but, the employee said this does not need to be refrigerated. Personally I am a big fan of egg tart and pork floss cake. This place is pretty disappointing. read more

The lines for Bao's Pastry have been consistently out the door every time I've passed by Roosevelt Ave. The longest I've seen was on Jan 24th when NYC got almost a foot of snow and yet the line was halfway down the block. We stopped by after dinner on a Tuesday night and still saw a line. Luckily it was shorter and was steadily moving. The fridges were pretty bare but we managed to grab one of everything they had at the time: taro snow puff cakes, coffee crispy meat floss cakes, seaweed crispy meat floss cakes, and golden Portuguese egg tarts. Each item ranged from $2.50-$3 each and came in packages of 2. My favorite was the coffee crispy floss cake as it was very crispy and salty on the outside and super soft and creamy on the inside. A close second was the egg tart which had a super crispy and flakey shell. The egg was super creamy and rich. I was not a fan of the seaweed floss cake flavor and the taro puff was way too soft and bland. I would definitely return for their egg tarts if the line isn't too long. read more

I tried the seaweed crispy flossed cake it's really good, the price is $5 for 2 pcs. I gave the egg tart to my friend, and she said it tasted good and was better than most of the nearby stores. The cashier seemed to be really rushing me but maybe because it's busy read more
Everybody on the streets of Flushing are carrying a yellow Bao's Pastry bag so we had to check it out. Stood in the line outside for 3 minutes then we were inside watching the pastry magic happen. You grab a yellow basket and put what freshly prepared milk cakes or cookies you want in the basket. For the egg tarts the staff packs it up fresh for you. We selected the caramel croissant egg tart and regular egg tart. Those were the best egg tarts I've ever tasted (and I've eaten a lot egg tarts in my life). Custardy creamy goodness. The croissant egg tart was extra special - caramelized on top to perfection with delicate crisp layers of laminated crust. The matcha milk tea cake was amazing - a light puffy fluffy 1 layer "cake" bite covered in a matcha whipped cream sprinkled with chocolate cookie bits. That was my guilty pleasure dinner tonight. I have no regrets. read more

Not sure what the fuss was about. It was just ok. I preferred the almond cooked out of everything we stood in line for. The lines moves quickly and they are very organized. We tried it. It was ok. read more

I am not a person who complements sweet flavors. But my god this bun I had in Bao's Pastry changed my mind. It was absolutely Phenomenon. As you bite into the bun, it is soft as a cloud and then you get hit by this creamy filling which enhance the flavor of the buns. the outside layer is crispy and coffying. It was crowed so you definitely know it is good. Would try again. Buns rating 9.2/10 read more
On a Wednesday afternoon there's was a line that's outside the door. Waited about 10 minutes and upon entry, you see the full work of the kitchen and staff assembled the pastries for purchase. It is a one way in and one way out. So been first time and need to see what they have I definitely felt the pressure to move along with the line and pick up what you think you like and need do you won't regret not buying it. The cloud cakes must be purchased in minimum 2's. The price of reasonable though they size are smaller and the desert light so you might want to buy a free extra. The egg custard tart definitely was flakey and custard softer than what I would get at bakeries but one of favorites. The cloud cake was good like the sponge cake but even lighter. Liked the floss and would want to try taro. Overall something a little different and would go if that's not too long of a wait. The staff were pushy to make sure you keep moving so not helpful or friendly when customers have questions. The staff definitely are busy indicating in what appears a slower time the turnaround is quick and pastries are fresh. read more
Totally not a fan. I am always looking to see if there's a place that has better Portuguese Macau style egg tarts and this place was super disappointing. The line didn't even really bother me. It was at most the five minute wait and then another 10 minutes to be able to get your goods and get on the egg tart Line. But when it comes down to the taste of the goods, it really fell flat. The taro snowflake cake was kind of like an undercooked meringue, which was very sticky and stuck to my fingers and the taro paste barely had any sugar in it, which I usually don't like super sweet desserts, but it tasted almost raw. The egg tarts were absolutely disgusting because they were dripping with butter and that compromised the integrity of the crust. I've had really good buttery Portuguese tarts that weren't swimming in a pool of cows oil. You can see in my picture where there is just a giant puddle and when I bit into it, it was just dripping from the egg tart. Because there's so much butter, it causes the custard to separate and the custard to crust ratio is off. There's not enough custard. The only thing I liked was the pork floss crispy coffee, but only the pork floss covering it. The pastry itself was kind of bland. I have to say this was really disappointing and I can get better pastries elsewhere for less money and better quality. read more

Today I m trying the egg tart because there is a line waiting for it. The egg tart is really crispy and tasty but I don't like heavy cream. That is why I give it a 4. Otherwise it will definitely a 5 read more

Was lucky as it was raining and the lines were short for a Saturday afternoon. - The Golden Portuguese Egg Tart was good, flaky crust and caramelized sweet filling. As others have mentioned, a little greasy but they actually give you little packets with a disposable glove to keep your hands clean. - The Coffee Crispy Floss Cake didn't seem to have much coffee flavor, but the creamy filling was light and sweet. The Seaweed Crispy Floss Cake was very good with tasty seaweed bits mixed in with the Pork Floss. Both had lots of Crispy Floss that added a nice salty touch to the sweet cream. - The Popping Puff (Water Chestnut) was interesting. A crème puff with little water chestnut filled boba. Light cream inside with a surprising water chestnut crunch when you pop the boba. Not a strong flavor though. - The Matcha Milk Cake has a nice matcha taste. Delicate cake inside sandwiching a thin layer of matcha crème and smothered with matcha cream outside. There is a QR code you can scan (all the employees are wearing this QR coded badge around their neck) to join the Bao Pastry Rewards, but apparently it's not active yet or not working. None of the cashiers or guys managing the lines could tell me anything about the program or how the program works. They all seemed just as puzzled as I was when I showed them the web page from the QR code and asked them how to earn coupons and points. There was no way any purchases could be applied to the app or rewards account. They just shrugged read more

We stumble upon this one while looking for the other bakery that I wanted to check out. I'm so glad that we found this one and able to devour some of their treats. I was looking for some egg tarts to take home and this bakery did not disappoint. I got one of each of the tarts and each one is delicious and most importantly not too sweet for my liking. Although there's a line when we were there they manage to keep the flow going in a speedy process. We also tried their butter mochis and it was delicious and again not too sweet. The chicken floss was also delicious but the combination of having a fibrous dried chicken toppings on a baked good is not for me. I'll skip that one next time but the rest are going to be a new obsession for me. The place is quaint but is very organized and clean. There are lots of selections to choose from and the staff are friendly and welcoming. I will be returning in the future when visiting NY again. read more

The line was long as usual but the whole process of waiting in line and checking out took only 30 mins. They only had the taro egg tarts available when I was there. The egg tart has taro filling on top, custard filling in the middle and red bean paste on the bottom. The best egg tart I ever tasted. I would definitely recommend trying the mochi fresh and warm on the spot. The sesame pork bun had too much filling in the bun for me but the taste is good. I wasn't into the taro cake as that's just my personal taste preference. But the cake was light and fluffy. Overall the quality of their pastries and cookies are good. Would recommend to stop by and try out a few of their items. read more
