Still the same setup as last time with about 10 seats total along both walls, and you order at the counter towards the back. Certainly inflation is not our friend as sandwiches now start at $10.50 and go to $12, though still one of the most affordable options around. Same drill, order at the counter, they take cash or card and they'll call the number on the receipt when it's ready. For some reason I misread the number on my receipt and the ladies had to call it a few times before I realized it was me, then after I picked it up, I heard a loud comment in Cantonese from one of the ladies complaining about how long it took for me to pick it up. Frankly I know service isn't what people come here for, though was a little annoyed that the extra 30 seconds warranted that comment. At the same time the store is staffed by a bunch of women who look to be grandmas in their 60s, so I guess I can understand the offhand comments of that generation. All sandwiches are packed in a paper bag, cut in half. The pork bbq sandwich was still as good as it was last time, crunchy fresh French baguette with plenty of marinated diced pork, pickled carrots and radishes, raw cucumbers, a slice of pate and a few sprigs of cilantro. There are two Vietnamese sandwiches I recommend in NYC. Banh Mi Saigon is one of them. As someone who is half Vietnamese on her mother's side as a Nguyen and from San Jose, California, Banh Mi Saigon and Xe May are the closest I can find to authentic Banh mi. This Banh mi place is very generous with their meat and filling - it's packed! The bread is also very typical of Vietnamese baguettes which differ from their cousin, the French baguette. Banh Mi is derived from the French phrase, "pain de mie" by the way. I also had Banh Mi in the motherland in Vietnam when I traveled there a few times, so I've tried many Banh mis in my lifetime - from Hanoi, Saigon, Hue, San Jose, Westminster/Garden Grove to NYC's Chinatown and Lower East Side, and I can safely say Banh Mi Saigon offers a close authentic Vietnamese deli experience with the Vietnamese desserts (Che) on display to the Vietnamese drinks. Vietnamese delis to Vietnamese-Americans are what bodegas are to New Yorkers - our neighborhood staples and lifeline. The staff here are quad-lingual by the way. I'm glad I'm able to speak and understand when they communicate in English, Vietnamese, Cantonese, and Mandarin. I love their #13, the Vietnamese cold cut sandwich aka Banh Mi Thit Nguoi along with some Cantonese Iced Chrysanthemum tea and Banh Da Lon for dessert. As a Vietnamese person, it genuinely bums me out that NYC, a city that's supposed to be the mecca of diversity, doesn't have more or better Vietnamese food options. Definitely the most popular banh mi sandwich in the Chinatown area, if not all of NYC. Is it the best? Hard to argue that since it is one of the most delicious. It starts with the bread, nice and crusty, but soft and fluffy at the same time. The pate has a great flavor and so does the meat. However, I do wish that there were more veggies, as well as bigger pieces and had more crunch to them. Otherwise, it is about as good as you will find. Size-wise, it's not big, but filling enough. I always find myself coming back to Banh Mi Saigon when craving a Vietnamese Pork Sandwich. The price here has gone up over the years, but the quality and ingredients still live up to their name. The pork tastes exactly the same as it used to 10 years ago. However, the bread is slightly tougher and not as toasty now. Despite the slight change in bread texture, I find that they still sell the bet pork banh mi sandwiches in NYC. Their desserts are also an extra bonus. When I came in I enjoyed how clean and barren the decor was, however when I went to the standing tables they had here, was immediately grossed out by the smell of dirty water emanating from the table, some one here really needs learn to clean and/or replace the rags they wash the tables with. Given the high volume of reviews for Banh Mi Saigon, I had high expectations for this restaurant. Their ordering process is quick and seamless as their menu is very simple with less than 30 items. I love the grab and go concept for lunch rushes, but wished they had actual seating in the restaurant instead of the stand up bars. We ordered the #1 BBQ pork and #10 sauteed pork chop with lemongrass and onions. Unfortunately, the pork chop banh mi was pretty bad. It had this pungent smell that was unappetizing, possibly from the onions. The contents seemed to be boiled and lacked much taste. I was very turned off by this sandwich. The BBQ pork was better but still fell flat. They both tasted dry and didn't have any sauce. There were also no sauce bottles on the counters so we had to ask for some packets of siracha to liven up our meal. Overall, I was extremely disappointed by Banh Mi Saigon. I have to say that the price is a bit higher than I'm used to, but the quality is there with how much fillings they put into these sandwiches. You can actually see all the layers of meat topped with the pickled carrots and daikon. It also comes with cucumber, jalapeño, and cilantro. But the thing that also stands out here is their spicy dressing that they add to it if you like spicy. I don't find it spicy at all but it does add an additional flavor to the sandwiches. Wow this might be my new favorite banh mi in NYC. There is a vast menu and I look forward to coming back to try some of the vermicelli dishes. It's a small shop that always has a line (it goes by fast tho, you reach the front and order within 3-5 mins mins every time). I have only gotten the number 1, the pork bbq banh mi and each time it hits the spot. Someone calls out your number within 5-10 mins, and your order is ready. There are no table and chairs, people often come here to pick up their lunch and leave but I think this is something you should eat fresh. Along the wall there is a shelf for you to stand and eat but no formal chairs. Each sandwich is under 10 dollars, a steal in NYC. The bread is crispy, it is packed with fresh vegetables that complement the meat very well. I wish they would cut up the cilantro. They leave the full stem uncut so often times I bite in and find myself needing to pull out the whole stem of cilantro (since it's hard to pull apart with just your teeth). The best part is how the bbq pork is warm and refreshing, and they do not hold back on the portions of meat. Since it's so packed the meats aren't fully mixed with the vegetables so that's a mild complaint. I got the Saigon one which is the classic pork. Delicious and unlike other comments here, mine was packed with meat and veggies too, they were not stingy.
