Sloppy boy with kettle chips. Really good!
    Jason K.

My co-workers and I were in downtown Minneapolis and decided to take the half mile walk to a place I have wanted to try for years. Band Box diner. We found a table for 6 at the back and we all ordered some beverages from our wonderfully attentive waitress, refilling our waters as we ran low and was super nice. I noticed they took the tuna melt off the menu, but I ordered the Sloppy Boy instead, which I thought would be like a Philly Cheesesteak burger, but it was more like a Sloppy Joe. The meat was good and tossed in a sloppy joe type sauce. The bun was great, with it nicely buttered and toasted on the flattop. If I came back again, I would order a burger since all of my friends seemed to love theirs and they looked delicious. I did try an onion ring from one of the plates and it seemed fresh and crispy and really tasty. Price was right for high quality food, which I must admit, I was not expecting much from a diner started in the 1940's but it far exceeded just a "Greasy spoon" Not the best neighborhood and my pants stuck to the sticky chair on the way out, but it is a solid place for a lunch with buddies and our server was awesome.

Recently moved nearby so figured I'd give it a try. Menu is decently priced and they staff is very friendly. I ordered a cheeseburger with fries, while the burger was great, I'm not a fan of string fries. I prefer regular cut fries. This is my only complaint. I will come back and try the breakfast.

Our most favorite weekend breakfast place. Great service and atmosphere. You still feel part of a family eating there. Food is always great and cooked right in front of you. Try it ! You will not be disappointed.

Doing a live review at the Band Box, my cozy neighborhood diner at South 10th and East 14th Street. Down the street from North Central College. Ordered the cheeseburger (pepper jack cheese) with a side of onion rings (in place of the usual fried onions) and chips). (8) counter stools, (1) 6-top, (2) 4-top tab, and (3) 2-top tables. As I said, it's a cozy place. Cheeseburger was a nice Angus beef patty, fresh lettuce, tomato and onion. I don't do pickles. Onion rings were fresh and nicely fried and crispy, not frozen. Waitress was very friendly and nice. Glad I finally tried the Band Box. It's a 4.5.

This is a real diner! Come for the food as well as the show as you watch the grillmaster at work. Sit at the counter to get the real experience of days gone by.

My son wanted breakfast and we were in the area. Band Box Diner is a small local restaurant. The service was standard. It was uncomfortable due to how cold it was. We packed up and left. Parking is a bit much to find but the building is easily accessible on the corner.

As seen in the mighty ducks movie, this place was delicious! It's exactly what you expect it to be, a delicious Minnesota staple. I had a breakfast sandwich with french toast as the bread. I'm sorry to compare it to McDonald's but it was like their McGriddle but about 1000x better, great breakfast place! Go check out my Instagram at goodeatsminneapolis!

We've been waiting for this place to reopen since we moved into the neighborhood. The perfect little greasy spoon with GREAT prices! Get there early for brunch, it feels up fast. And it can be pretty hot if you're sitting at the bar (immediately across from the grill). We appreciate the history and quaintness - it fits the neighborhood vibe well.

TOTALLY a fan! I'm legit driving down Park Avenue craving a blt... I pull over on 9th and Park and pull out my phone and Yelped "BLT's nearest me." Band Box was like the 3rd or 4th option and I wasn't aware they were open that late. I caught them during their last 30 minutes of being open. I skimmed the menu options to find my beloved BLT and saw it for $7... yep! #sevendollarholla (make it go viral lol) I called the number provided on Yelp and spoke with a pleasant young lady and asked if i could place an order for pickup? I got my favorite answer, "yes." Asked for a blt on wheat bread and let her know that I was literally around the corner and on my way. Parking this time of evening was easy... plenty of street parking. Walks in and find this cute little diner. I have driven by 1 Million times literally, have had take out 1x that an old bf, but have never gone in the diner. I've had gf's growing up who lived across the street.. I have just never entered. Ambiance: Such a cute place. There are about 8 tables (out of the 8 like 2 /3 four-seaters. There is also seats at the counter. The grill looked clean, for it to be closing time. Service: Pleasant and I enjoyed the dialogue and friendliness provided by the employees. Food: That BLT hit the SPOT! Only wish i had mayo on BOTH sides of my bread, but I one side was fine. It made my sandwhich pretty. LOL I'll be back!

I ordered the Nashville Hot chicken and it was incredible. It was crispy, oversized, extremely hot, I was crying after eating it. My girlfriend got the eggs Benedict, which she loved, and I stole some of. The real star of this restaurant is the donuts and spicy cheese curds though. I would literally travel back to Minneapolis just for those. I think I dream about them in my sleep. The vibe is great inside, it's retro, but not in a try-hard way. Solid service as well they're just so sweet and local. Must try spot if you're visiting Minneapolis.

The bad: Bloody Mary's were flat and expensive $13 each. No depth of flavor, thought we would give them a second chance. . Ordered croquette madame. Egg was severely undercooked - the egg white was gelatatinous and the bread way too thick, ham fatty and subpar, where were you Béchamel? I took a bite of my breakfast and he hands me a box at the end when I asked for the check--not asking if anything is wrong. Two bites out of the spring mix salad and sandwich. Bloody Mary full. $70 for a salad, madame croquette, slow service which is no problem. It's a tiny diner and around lunch time. No worries there. But uncomfortable dining service because we could feel the tension between the server and bartender. Again for me? NBD but my daughter did not appreciate this. The good: the Mediterranean salad was delicious according to my daughter. She had the same thoughts about the Bloody Marys. Super cute beer backs- pony miller high life. I brought the croque madame home and my son loved it. Went on and on about how amazing it was. In all fairness my adult kids loved their food. He did microwave it to cook the egg through. Yes I know I am picky because I worked in the restaurant industry for over 22 years. And I can make better food at home. I just expect a bit more if I am going to drop $70 for two lunch entrees and two drinks. Not including the tip. Bottom line: I would not go back for this very expensive diner that doesn't know how to properly cook simple things. Or chop veg. Or make a drink.

Being a breakfast aficionado, I have no idea why it took me so long to get to Al's. My husband, who is out of the house a lot more than me, has been there several times. He has been trying to get me to go there for months. And finally we made it in February. At the time, with all the political things going on in Minneapolis, Yelp actually told me I could not write a review at the time. So I am glad now that I can come back and leave this five-star for them. So as many have said, Al's is about as old school diner as you can get. One line of stools, 14 seats or something like that. Just like Matt's Bar, there's an impossibly tiny grill and the chef makes the most amazing things on it! My husband adores the wally blues pancakes. I do think they are super tasty. They have nuts and berries and are just about the most tasty pancake you've ever had. Get one to share even if you order something else. He got the corned beef hash, which looked like basically everything you would ever want that dish to be. I got the classic benedict (the dish by which I judge all breakfast places). It was SO GOOD. It's an english muffin and a big thick slice of ham, plus the perfectly poached eggs. But the real true thing that makes this dish just baller is the generous helping of hollandaise sauce. Thick and luscious and seriously the most lemony hollandaise I have ever ever tasted. It was so good. I tried to be a lady but eventually was just sticking my finger in the leftover sauce and licking it like a toddler. I would have seriously licked the plate. The guy behind the counter smiled and said, "Yeah, our hollandaise sauce will ruin you." And he was right. Can't wait to go back for another helping. Cash only, no bathroom, street parking. Come prepared. We happened to go close to the 1 p.m. closing time and didn't have to wait at all. Pro tip.

Went right at open, 6am, and the place (10 seats) was already mostly full. It's about as old-timey diner as you can get. Wood paneling, cash only, watching the line cooks work, and a-la-carte menu. Everyone was friendly and I love the inclusive, anti-ice vibe. Unfortunately that's kind of where the highlights end and mediocrity begins. I would describe everything as "fine" but that may be partially due to my pancake preferences. They were definitely the dense and, well, slightly gummy pancakes I don't really like. That's opposite the crispy, lacy ones at Al's and fluffy buttermilk ones at Our Kitchen. Not to mention it's like $3/oz for actual maple syrup. My partner got an egg, sausage, toast meal and it is what says on the tin. I think it's good, and I love the community support from management, but definitely riding the "institutional" status for business. I think I'd prefer Al's if in the area and Our Kitchen if South.
