I remember liking this place a lot during grad school! I went back and it's just not the same anymore. No more 2 for 1 beers and the food quality as gone down (or I have different standards now idk). The toast wasn't really toasted, the hash browns weren't crispy and the strawberry in the strawberry crisps were not fresh. They're also serving on disposable plates which would be fine if the food didn't soak through. I also thought their water tasted weird. Unfortunately, we had alot of leftovers that we just tossed.

Note: Tony's is a huge piece of nostalgia for me from my college days - we spent our weekend mornings here hungover grabbing breakfast and debriefing the nights before. I'm trying to keep that homey feeling separate from my review for someone who may have not had the same amazing memories here as me! Tony's is a staple breakfast spot in Dinkytown - the greasy diner hole-in-the-wall. This is the place if you're looking for a classic diner breakfast with a basic yet delicious menu. Be warned, if you're coming on a weekend morning it will probably be crowded and seating is limited. You place your order at the register, then grab a number and your food is brought out to a table. It's not super speedy, but I've never really complained about how long the wait is. This time around, I ordered the southwest omelette and my boyfriend got the denver omelette as a breakfast burrito - then we shared a half stack of pancakes. The omelettes here are more on the hard-egg side (less souffle like) which isn't my favorite, but I don't mind much. The southwest is perfect if you're a tomato lover. The pancakes are delicious and fluffy, but not very sweet. I'm not a syrup person but these definitely needed a bit. Hashbrowns are nothing special but they hit the spot - note: they don't really do special orders, I asked for my hashbrowns well-done and they came out normal. Overall, If you're looking for a quick breakfast stop on campus, this is the place!

Tony's has some of the most amazing breakfast I've had in a long time. Located in Dinkytown in the college area. Breakfast is not my fave meal but this place put a smile on my face. It's hard to find good diner authentic quality. This places checks off that box. I ordered a loaded hash brown with mushrooms, onions and tomatoes with avocado toast. Be warned the avocado toast does come with an egg though it wasn't listed. They kindly remade it for me because I can't have dairy. I was even able to order a mimosa at this lovely place. Highlight is the most delightful habanero hot sauce that was made by a local. I wish they sold it by the bottle because I would have bought a couple. The green was my favorite. Everyone at our table enjoyed their food. I will be back on every Minneapolis trip I have in the future.

Tony's Diner, is I'm sure, a staple at the U. I'm not usually around the Dinkytown area, but a place that serves breakfast all day is like a neon beacon. I got the Basic Tony's breakfast. Eggs, hashbrowns, choice of meat, and toast. The serving size is such that I don't think you'll leave Tony's hungry. It was good, just a regular ole breakfast. Prices are decent and service is fairly quick and friendly. Parking is not the greatest, but loads of public transportation spots around.

TONYYYYYYYYY'S I'm coming here more often. Affordable, you get a metric shit-ton of food, the staff are so cool and friendly, and the brekky is so good you'll be throwing around chef's kisses left and right. The French Toast made me go "oooooooooooooh yaaaaaa." So cinnamon-y, squishy, but also crispy, buttery, syrupy, and sexy. Wowee. The Biscuits and Gravy were fantastic as well. Awesome hash, lots of dark gravy and although I don't eat meat my boyfriend reported back that the sausage was "really good" with an enthusiastic thumbs up. The pancakes were the fluffy, phat, diner cakes we were craving. A full stack is 6 cakes, so be prepared before you commit because it's a lot! My only complaint is that they don't use any reusable dishes. The silverware was plastic, cups were plastic and styrofoam, and the plates were paper. This may be a temporary thing because of COVID, but I'm not sure. Aside from that, Tony's was stellar and I'll definitely be back!

I debated on the number of stars to give because the food and how quick they are was really good, but the service wasn't good at all. I ordered a #1 and it was really really good. Everything was as I asked and it just taste good. The place had quite of few ppl in it when I walked it for my pick up order. Parking can be hard in this area, but you're doing pick up, you could just quickly pull up in front of the restaurant (*hazards included) and run in and grab your order. I looked around and thought the place was decently clean. No complaints on cleanliness, especially with the high traffic I would assume they get in Dinkytown. The service I received wasn't good. When I approached the counter, there was a woman working and she knew exactly what I came in for when I said a pick up order, but where it turned weird was when I asked her what is the name of what I ordered (I couldn't remember, since on line it had an actual name like... Tony's Special our something) and she just cut me off with a "Yeah Yeah." So I paused like huh and repeated the question. I'm tickled now about it, but day of ... not so much. haaaaaa We did that 3x and finally she says, "The #1." I had to ask her if she was even listening to me or just trying to speak over me. SMH If everyone else is having great service, then great, everyone is entitled to an off day. I'll still come back, but no one wants to be spoken over and/or brushed off, especially when I'm a paying customer. You can be rude to me, if you don't have my money in your pocket. LOLBVVS I'll try them again one wknd. Hopefully she's having a better day.

Jello with seeds and perpetual cut toast Recommend the hello

Highly conflicted. Came excited, went bathroom, slipped, cried, ate food, feel sad yet, hung over but good company. Burrito to much onion, jello had had seeds in it. Next to garbage.... EW. Stinky! THEN man crop dusted (farted silent) next to me. Cut toast horizontal not perpetual. Ps. Water has booger

A campus staple that's less well-known than Al's around the corner. But as a student, this was a go-to for me. Boyfriend and I ordered brunch at the front counter-- two omelettes (one cheese, one ham) and two waters. Price point is decent -- around $8 a plate. Service was on the slower side, but I chalked it up to busy-ness (Friday late morning, with a lot of students getting out of class). We got our plates -- omelettes come with buttered toast, jelly, and hash browns. My omelette was tasty and no frills, and my boyfriend felt the same way. However, both of us agreed that the hash brown can use some additional salt and seasoning. Toast was solid, with a nice crunch to it. Overall, while Tony's may have lost its luster since my student days, it's not a bad place and you'll get a decent meal.

My half eaten chocolate chip pancakes! Soaking in syrup of course!

Came here on a very slow Tuesday morning because I was craving pancakes. I had never been here before despite going to school here for 4 years. Crazy I know. When you walk in, the place is super cute and total diner looking. They have their menu on the wall by the counter in the front where you order your food. They have a variety of breakfast and lunch/dinner options for any time of the day! As I said, I was craving pancakes when I came here! I got chocolate chip pancakes and they were amazing! The pancakes were cooked perfectly and were exactly what I wanted. They also have bottomless coffee here as well! Super appealing to college students! The coffee was average, but in the morning, any coffee is good coffee! Overall this is a very fun place around campus to grab some food. I will definitely be coming back again.

I had my heart set on Al's for breakfast but my dad was hangry and impatient so around the corner to Tony's we went. There wasn't anything special about the omelet I ordered. But maybe I feel that way because I'm still holding a grudge about Al's. Hard to say either way. The place was packed, probably because Al's was also, and there aren't a lot of breakfast joints in dinkytown. I used to come here back in the day in college when it was called Steak Knife and the night spot for us under 21 year olds to party and/or watch a band. I think I only ever ate here once for lunch and don't really remember much about it. They rebranded after I left so not sure if it's still the night spot it was back in the day.

My order was a combo of buttermilk pancakes(3), bacon, eggs and a hash-brown.

I ordered the Nashville Hot chicken and it was incredible. It was crispy, oversized, extremely hot, I was crying after eating it. My girlfriend got the eggs Benedict, which she loved, and I stole some of. The real star of this restaurant is the donuts and spicy cheese curds though. I would literally travel back to Minneapolis just for those. I think I dream about them in my sleep. The vibe is great inside, it's retro, but not in a try-hard way. Solid service as well they're just so sweet and local. Must try spot if you're visiting Minneapolis.

The veg was a very not cut correctly: chunks of green bell peppers and over chunky sliced onions that were not cooked through. Please stop being lazy and chop your veg and cook the onion . Green salad was hot Not impressed. And the Bloody Mary mix is sub par. However, the diner is cute and service is good. Second visit: had to sit at counter which is fine. They were busy. The bad: Bloody Mary's were flat and expensive $13 each. No depth of flavor, thought we would give them a second chance. . Ordered croquette madame. Egg was severely undercooked - the egg white was gelatatinous and the bread way too thick, ham fatty and subpar, where were you Béchamel? I took a bite of my breakfast and he hands me a box at the end when I asked for the check--not asking if anything is wrong. Two bites out of the spring mix salad and sandwich. Bloody Mary full. $70 for a salad, madame croquette, slow service which is no problem. It's a tiny diner and around lunch time. No worries there. But uncomfortable dining service because we could feel the tension between the server and bartender. Again for me? NBD but my daughter did not appreciate this. The good: the Mediterranean salad was delicious according to my daughter. She had the same thoughts about the Bloody Marys. Super cute beer backs- pony miller high life. I brought the croque madame home and my son loved it. Went on and on about how amazing it was. In all fairness my adult kids loved their food. He did microwave it to cook the egg through. Yes I know I am picky because I worked in the restaurant industry for over 22 years. And I can make better food at home. I just expect a bit more if I am going to drop $70 for two lunch entrees and two drinks. Not including the tip. Bottom line: I would not go back for this very expensive diner that doesn't know how to properly cook simple things. Or chop veg. Or make a drink.

Al's Breakfast is an old fashioned diner experience in a modern world. If you are expecting any…read moreelegance at all, go elsewhere. It is tiny and efficient. 14 seats and you are elbow to elbow with the person next to you. The whole restaurant is maybe 15 feet wide. If you have been to Ideal Diner, that place is spacious compared to Al's Breakfast. When you arrive you wait in line, standing right behind the 14 people who are eating. When a seat opens up they will clear it, then whoever is next in line gets to sit. If the open seat is at the other end of the bar you really have to suck it in to let them pass. The servers may not be what you are used to. They are not there to ask about your day, be friends, and make you feel better about yourself. They are there to take your order and serve your food. We did not experience the rudeness others have reported. In fact we were seated next to some regulars and the server stopped to talk to them a bit. There was one waitress who was a bit crabby, but even she wasn't rude, just busy. The food was really good. I had blueberry pancakes. They had a lot of blueberries in them, and were really good. Next time I will order them without butter on top because they do come with a large slab of butter on top. If you like butter it is great, but it was too much for me. My partner had buttermilk pancakes, eggs, and bacon. Everything was really good. The bacon was crispy and delicious. He didn't think it was too much butter. During our meal we had to scoot down a seat to allow room for another diner. Again, not elegant, but it is what you have to do to feed people in this space. It is important to note that they only take cash or checks - no credit cards. Also, if you think you can skip the wait by ordering takeout you are wrong. You are not allowed to order takeout until it is your turn and you are seated at the counter. In the space they have they can only cook for 14 people at a time and special treatment for takeout would mess up the flow of the place. They know exactly how to run a restaurant of their size, so go with the flow and don't expect special treatment in any way. Once you are done eating pay your bill and get out. There are people waiting for your seat and it is rude to linger. Parking is street parking, and it is not handicapped accessible. If you need any sort of accommodation I would not recommend this place. They simply don't have the time or space to do anything but serve food.

Being a breakfast aficionado, I have no idea why it took me so long to get to Al's. My husband, who is out of the house a lot more than me, has been there several times. He has been trying to get me to go there for months. And finally we made it in February. At the time, with all the political things going on in Minneapolis, Yelp actually told me I could not write a review at the time. So I am glad now that I can come back and leave this five-star for them. So as many have said, Al's is about as old school diner as you can get. One line of stools, 14 seats or something like that. Just like Matt's Bar, there's an impossibly tiny grill and the chef makes the most amazing things on it! My husband adores the wally blues pancakes. I do think they are super tasty. They have nuts and berries and are just about the most tasty pancake you've ever had. Get one to share even if you order something else. He got the corned beef hash, which looked like basically everything you would ever want that dish to be. I got the classic benedict (the dish by which I judge all breakfast places). It was SO GOOD. It's an english muffin and a big thick slice of ham, plus the perfectly poached eggs. But the real true thing that makes this dish just baller is the generous helping of hollandaise sauce. Thick and luscious and seriously the most lemony hollandaise I have ever ever tasted. It was so good. I tried to be a lady but eventually was just sticking my finger in the leftover sauce and licking it like a toddler. I would have seriously licked the plate. The guy behind the counter smiled and said, "Yeah, our hollandaise sauce will ruin you." And he was right. Can't wait to go back for another helping. Cash only, no bathroom, street parking. Come prepared. We happened to go close to the 1 p.m. closing time and didn't have to wait at all. Pro tip.
