First time eating there yesterday and loved it! Love the 50's atmosphere including music and the nostalgic pictures everywhere. The waitresses are dressed in poodle skirts and the food is wonderful! We both had burgers (I had the bacon cheese burger and he had the 50's burger) and the buns are homemade! The buns make all the difference in the world! Nice little restaurant with a 50s theme. I had a 6oz Bacon Cheeseburger and fries for $15.99. It honestly was just average and nothing special. Service from Ruby my waitress was fantastic, and she checked in on me frequently checking if I needed anything. I am not sure how I haven't reviewed this place before. We have been semi-regulars ever since moving to Brooklyn Center. it's a fun relaxed place to go when friends or family from out of town visit, and they have an extensive menu, all cooked on site. It's basic American diner foods, but all made with care. What we learned during lockdown is that it's also great for carryout. I can call an order in, and they have it ready just as quickly as if I'd gone to a fast food drive thru. My son is a bit of a chocolate malt connoisseur, and he says these are the best in town. I am more impressed that I can get a Green River phosphate here, or a chicken pot pie to take home on a cold January night. My relatives once told me if you want to know a good place to eat, watch where the older people go. They are here ( and I suppose I am one of them now!) , and I have often seen staff go the extra mile to help customers who have mobility challenges. read more

First time at 50's Grill- what a fun place! The decor is great and I loved all the 50's icons on the wall. We got a banana malt and it was so good and had real banana chunks in it. Then we ordered a bacon cheeseburger with mashed potatoes and the chicken pot pie. The fresh baked bread served with the pot pie was delicious and warm. Chicken pot pie was very good and well seasoned- the crust was so flaky. I've been here 3 times, twice was for burgers which I'd recommend. During the third visit, which was on a Monday I split the daily special, roasted 1/2 chicken with sides. The sides included mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and a cup of corn (although I think the veggie may change based on what's available). The meal also came with the option of soup or salad; we went for the wild rice soup. They used a broth versus a cream sauce, but it was still very good. The entree itself was mediocre; it was very bland. Nonetheless it was a good value and definitely a good dish to split. My partner and his family like coming here, so when I return (I'm sure I will), I'll definitely stick with one of their many burgers which has been good each time. read more

Unfortunately don't like giving poor reviews but had ordered the grilled chicken salad along with some of my coworkers and was shocked to find the salad floating in all the honey Dijon dressing instead of it being served on the side like every other restaurant. ! First off kudos to the personable staff, attentive to our questions. Food - only one in a party of three received a solid order selection; the BLT with a cup of broccoli & cheese soup. Flavorful & filling! Other selections, Hot Turkey open faced sandwich appeared to have been under a warmer the only item hot was the side of corn - all in all small portion as well. Patty Melt looked amateurishly made though person consuming stated it was tasty. Three stars is warranted for the service & the peanut butter & hot fudge malt. Sometimes you gotta go back in time to find real quality. I have passed by this place countless times and did not even give it a second look. The 50's Grill is surrounded by fast food chain restaurants left and right. But in the midst of all that here lies an authentic spot with quality food that they say is made fresh and with natural ingredients. My palate was very happy. As you walk into the 50's Grill it's definitely a step back in time. The servers even wear the flare skirts with pink and black details. It was super cute. I loved that they had booths. A diner style restaurant must have booths in my opinion to keep up with the era. Now, I knew I wanted a Butterscotch malt/milkshake before I even knew what meal I wanted. Finally, I decided on the Patty Melt with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy. I loved every bite. The patty was so tasty. The meat was well flavored and well done. The fried onions and melted cheese all blended together so well. Also my mashed potatoes and gravy were butterlicious. The Butterscotch milkshake/malt was one of the best I have had. It was so rich and sweet. My friend had the Swiss Mushroom Burger with fries which he loved it as well with his IBC Root Beer. Their motto is " We really cook" and it showed. Very disappointed. The place wasn't very busy, but waited in the waiting area for over 10 min. When asked to see the manager all we got was excuses and no apology. Used to go to this place a lot with great service but has considerly gone done hill. You can have great tasting food, but if the service is poor it really hurts the experience. I'm not sure why I haven't reviewed 50's Grill before because I've been here dozens of times over the years. It's one of those places that you know what you are going to get, it will be as good as the last time you got it, and the atmosphere is a comfortable as going to an old friend's house. As the name implies, this place really is the kind of place you would find in the 1950's, including old movie posters, 50's music, and wait staff looking like they should be chewing gum and on roller skates. The food is what you would call "comfort food" in the best way possible. One would not be surprised to find out that they invented the term "blue plate special." In fact, there ARE daily specials! The food includes the usual assortment of hamburgers, but I love their hot turkey sandwiches or "hand-carved" turkey dinners. It definitely is real turkey, real gravy, and real mashed potatoes. My wife's favorite is the Irish Cottage pie, which I suspect is the same as the Pot Pies, except covered with mashed potatoes instead of a crust (same price). I have never had a bad meal here and the service is uniformly (pun intended) excellent. Usually we can't resist splitting a milkshake which are really good! Since I don't like Malt, my wife let's me order as a Shake instead of a Malt, as long as she can pick the flavor (usually Mocha). Fair enough. The entrees come with fresh-baked bread, and salad or soup. I love 50's Grill for those times we don't want to think too hard about where to go or what to have. 50's continuously has good service. I've never had a poor experience or not been treated well. They have their technique down to science... old skool customer service. Greet at the door, friendly, smile and attentive. I was on a lunch break and time was limited. I had jsut wasted a portion of my lunch at Applebee's in the area to have horrible service and went were i know the food would be good and the service too. The menu has NOT changed out of all the years I've been a customer, but somethings don't need change. My burger was EXACTLY as i asked it to be. how many times have you asked for a medium well burger or medium and you get this overcooked welldone burger that when you cut it in half it shakes the entire table? My burger was medium well and I received all of my condiments and fixin's, as asked for. My fries weren't overcooked... everything was just perfect. I can't ever seem to leave the place without a pack of cookies though! Cookies there ARE ALWAYS good. read more

First started going in the late 80s, when Ferrel's Ice Cream Parlour turned into the 50s grill. What I love with this place is it hasn't changed; they have a formula and they do it right. I visited again for the first time recently as a good friend offered to take me anywhere I wanted to go for a birthday dinner. I met him there looking sadly over at the boarded up Brookdale Mall where I'd spent so many great days as a kid. I still miss Bridgeman's and Rocky Rococo in the mall but those days are gone. Went with a turtle malt and an 8 oz grillburger with cheese. Burger was delicious; love the extra thousand island sauce they give you; fries were perfect, and malt was fantastic - they do not short change you on the tin either, so you get the malt and plenty extra for a second serving. The servicie was great. Only one mistake was the cookies reserved for me were given out inadventetly but things happen. Felt for the staff as was behind a "Karen" (sorry to those Karens with that name these days tough break) at checkout making a rucus over their meal. But mine was great, and the servers work really hard here. Again, what is really nice here is they know if it ain't broke don't fix it; literally nothing has changed save the old TV no longer works in the "living room" that resembles the house that was blown up by the nuke test in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Great food, great service, and looking forward to going back. It's so great to see this place has made it through Covid, and a community that has had tough times with the closure of Brookdale, Kohls and so many other businesses that were mainstays along Brooklyn Boulevard. It's clear they care, as does the chef and the hard working kitchen people. Well worth the visit and a truly 5 star place. read more

Came to 50's grill with a co-worker for a business meeting. I was told this place is very different than other time period grills in the area. Every item is made from scratch and they have a menu filled with American classics your mom would make. I was tempted to try something unique like a hot plate but after hearing about their burgers the choice was easy. We had two burgers, homemade soup (chicken and wild rice) and a large chocolate malt. My friend went the extra mile and ordered home made apple pie which was list like moms. The decor is time piece with high back booths and 50's pics throughout and the staff has that classic with an attitude feel. I like that the server brings out a loaf of bread right away, because who doesn't love carbs? She even offered to bring another loaf. The crinkle cut fries were hot, crispy, and delicious! I read on the menu that the pot pie is one of their most popular items, so I went with that. It was rather small for being priced at $10.95. It tasted ok, but it wasn't anything great. I would've much rather spent $10.95 on 4 frozen Banquet pot pies. I would've gotten more food, plus they taste better. read more

Meals were very good (burgers, sandwich and walleye). Had a piece of pie to go, and wrong pie was given to us. To top it off, mom said the pie was not that great, either. Growing up this was my grandmas favorite restaurant. We'd go here usually for Mother's Day, birthdays and other special occasions. This time we went to celebrate my late aunts 50th birthday. They serve homestyle cooked meals. Super cute 50's themed decor. We stopped in for lunch. The lot made it look busy but once we got inside, it wasn't busy at all. I've always loved that they had tall booths. We had a baby so we sat at a regular table. I ordered a Cajun chicken sandwich & a caramel apple malt. The sandwich was really dry. Even with adding ketchup it was still pretty dry. Also the "Cajun" seasoning wasn't as flavorful as I thought it would it be. Super bland. The caramel apple malt was very good. I loved the green apple chunks in it. The service was pretty good considering it wasn't very busy. Prices have went up a bit since I last visited years ago. Overall I love desserts here, I remember them having really good pies and cookies, but the food is just okay. Don't let the busy parking lot mislead you! read more

Found this Gem by accident. Wow was I glad I did. An authentic 50's diner in look feel and taste. First, all bread, buns and bakery made on the premises!!! I got the homemade chicken pot pie--- delicious. The pastry shell on top was buttery and flaky. My partner got the award winning hamburger and fries-- again delicious. I've been eating at the 50s Grill since I was a kid. We'd come to Minneapolis for the summer to see my oldest brother and it was always a treat to drive out here to get a burger and a malt. Even as I got older when I would come to the city to visit, my brother and I would hit this place up. While I can't comment on any of their dinners (this place caters to an older crowd, so there are a lot of early-dinner specials), I can say that their classic burger is tasty and that their selection of malts is fantastic - in fact, 50s Grill receives a nomination in my book for best malt ever. Truly, I'm in love. I've had a variety of malts including the standard chocolate (fan favorite), the turtle, the girl scout cookie and others. The secret: you have to eat the malt out of the tin. Don't bother wasting time pouring it into the malt glass they bring with the metal canister. There's just something about eating directly from the malt tin itself. :) The atmosphere is a classic 50s theme with high booths, lots of neon, classic music playing and pictures of movie stars, posters and magazine ads from years gone by. It's a fun little find; if you're looking for an old malt-shop feel with decent prices and tasty treats, I'd strongly recommend. read more
