I initially stopped at the Lowbrow by myself and enjoyed a great burger. That same week, I returned with my spouse, and she enjoyed a different great burger. The Lowbrow is truly the quintessential neighborhood tavern. It reeks with authenticity. The area in South Minneapolis named Kingfield has a different feel than the pockets of commercialism that touchdown on multiple four corners in this part of town. It's growing, and attracting an eclectic array of people. The Lowbrow acts as a community center for Kingfield, and the two times I went, I saw some of the same people. The menu is large and while it specializes in burgers, there is something for everybody. Alec was my/our bartender/server both times I ate at Lowbrow, and he warmed up once he realized I had returned to his Lowbrow community. Even the servers and cooks behave as if the Lowbrow is more than just a bar and restaurant. They serve their neighbors, and the Lowbrow is a throwback of that lost era when we all knew the neighbors names, and we watched out for each other. I feel comfortable at the Lowbrow, and I'm 76, originally from NYC, and don't look like anyone else. Imagine how comfortable you'll feel. My Lowbrow review is long overdue. I have been coming here for years for classics that could be considered Americana cafe' comfort with a bit of churching up on the side. For sure my favorite time is weekend brunch when it is typically fairly busy so a short wait should be expected. But other days and hours also have their appeal. Later Happy Hour starts weekdays at 9p; Sunday evenings are 1/2 off bottles of wine, and Monday evenings are dining for a cause where some of their proceeds are donated to a worthy need. When you add in the always friendly servers and the consistently good eats, it's almost never a bad choice to end up here. There is a full bar and some reasonably priced bottles of table wine as well as taps and cans for the beer drinkers. Their burgers and sandwiches are consistently great as are the often perfect skinny fries or the homemade vinaigrette dressed greens that can come with them. It is those upper grade sides that sets a meal here apart from most other diner type cafe's. A pro order tip is their BLT that isn't even listed on the menu but I get it 80% of the time I'm there. It is one of the best in the City in my opinion. This hidden gem, deep into the Kingfield neighborhood has been consistently doing it right for over 10 years now. I'm picky and used to run back of house at a brunch place. My buddy almost fell off his chair when I said "this is amazing, I wouldn't change a thing." Their Jalapeño scramble, eggs over medium, add chorizo was outstanding, as was the blueberry pancake. Coffee was top notch, mimosa well presented. Dominic, our server whom I do not know personally, has been my server before. Any restaurant owners looking to train their staff on the cheap, give your servers a gift certificate to the lowbrow, tell them to ask for Dominic, and tell them to take notes. What a great neighborhood spot! It seemed like almost everyone knew each other in here which made for a fun vibe. I sat at the bar and ordered a burger. The service was excellent, friendly and efficient. Especially for how they catered to the regulars, I still was not overlooked. Nice. The burger was amazing! The bacon fig jam with the cambozola cheese was an excellent pairing and elevated the burger well. The fries were fantastic. I kept thinking I'm full, I need to go, and I'd pop another fry in my mouth. Addicting! Definitely want to come back to try more items off of their menu. It's been awhile since I visited Lowbrow. Still the same inside which is so cute. Enjoyed their half order of nachos with guacamole (extra charge) as it's really large. The folks I was with ordered the vegan burger and the pastrami Reuben. Everyone enjoyed their dinners. There are a lot of drinks available - the Lowbrow old fashioned, The Freewheeler on tap and a Milk and Honey cider rounded out the beverages. We tried the stout cake which was so, so good. I love lowbrow. The one thing I wish it had right off the bat is a bigger parking lot/space. Lowbrow is street parking and sometimes I have to park at least a block away. Not far at all but just letting y'all know. They don't have a button for the doors to open automatically. The restaurant is typically bustling with some outdoor seating options when the weather is nice. They have gender neutral accessible bathrooms. I've eaten dinner here and I like their dinner. However, I LOVE eating brunch at lowbrow. I get the truck stop sandwich with vegan patties and a side salad. It's delicious and filling. Their deviled eggs are yummy, and their pancakes are to die for. I get one as dessert and split it. & you can never go wrong with Peace coffee. I docked off a star due to parking and because it could be more accessible outside and inside the restaurant. Like if I could do a 3.5 I would. One of my new favorite breakfast places in town! A nice cozy but still hip brunch ambiance, will definitely be back for dinner sometime too. Plenty of street parking, plus single-stall bathrooms! I started out with a peach iced tea ($3.25)--I think this may be one of the first places I've found with an unsweetened fruit tea before, which was so refreshing and had just enough peach essence to have flavor to it without feeling overpowering or artificial! I got the jalapeño hash ($15.25) with bacon added (+$3) and the eggs scrambled, at the recommendation of our server--normally I'm usually an over-easy enjoyer myself but scrambled was totally the right recommendation for this since the sour cream made it plenty sauce anyway! Great flavors, and the cooked jalapeño was DELICIOUS. I also got a single raspberry pancake ($5.75) on the side, which was also perfect--not too sweet or moist, with the perfect amount of fruit inside. Even though the food was great, the best part of this for me was our server Dominic--when I had no clue what to order, he recommended that hash (with customizations) with a QUICKNESS (after making sure I was a spicy/savory enjoyer first), and I literally never had to ask for an iced tea refill--normally, I feel annoying asking beyond the first refill, but he was on TOP of it, even with the place being as busy as it was! Me and my boys love The Lowbrow. They' think the best kids Cheeseburger is here so there's that! Today I got The Fire Breather which wasn't my favorite I've had, but still tasty. This is a nice, small neighborhood bar with a surprisingly great vegetarian menu for a burger-centric place. It's a small dining room and only a couple sidewalk tables so they fill up pretty quick. The service was good but I suspect they were understaffed since it took a bit between visits. Went for their date night special and it's a decent deal if you were going to order 2 beers and a dessert anyway. Normally I wouldn't get a beer or dessert so it ended up being pricier than our normal dinner. The tempeh Reuben was decent, and I'm just happy to find a meat-substitute Reuben since they're pretty rare. I love tempeh but this patty was kind of bland and the kraut didn't have much kick to it. Overall it was ok but I don't think I'd pay that price for it again without some punchier flavors. Tofu sticks are good but not strongly flavored. The bbq sauce is necessary. Book Club has better happy hour ones for $5. The peanut butter pie was insanely rich, but tasty. Pro tip: they serve it straight from the fridge so it's too cold. Give it 5 minutes to soften up and that PB flavor will pop. Also recommend sprinkling a pinch of salt on top. Overall it's an ok spot for post work beer and I wouldn't be upset about going back. I really wanted to love this place, but ultimately found it to be average. The decor is very cute and it's a very laid back vibe, but it is also very cramped space. The two people are the host stand weren't exactly welcoming. We almost felt like a bother to them. That said, the bartender was nice, and our server was great. We enjoyed our bloodorange mimosas! The cranberry mimosas definitely had a holiday day feel to them, we thought we tasted maybe some nutmeg and cinnamon. Not my favorite but still enjoyable. We both enjoyed the deviled eggs! Why don't more restaurants have those! I had the chorizo breakfast tacos. They were very generously topped with guacamole (not my favorite) and salsa (very good), and some sour cream. The poor corn tacos didn't stand a chance and this definitely required a fork! Overall they were pretty good. The herb roasted potatoes could have used more herbs, but were well cooked. My friend had the Lowbrow classic and she enjoyed it as well especially since the default break choice was sourdough. Overall we paid $100 but about half of that was for the four mimosas ($9.95 a piece). By the time we were finishing, people were ordering lunch, and some of the burgers and sandwiches I saw go out, looked amazing! Our coffee and waters were kept full (though there were lipstick marks on my cup). Parking was a bit of challenge with the snow and being in a large van, but it seems that there is street parking available on the surrounding streets. read more

This is my neighborhood go-to place. I love the burgers, but it doesn't stop there. If you haven't tried the pulled pork nachos (yes, add the guacamole) then it's necessary you do. If you want something different, I he homemade fish sticks with those great fries are tasty. Then there is always the pasta of the day. Restaurant does a great job catering to different appetites. I find my self at the bar often and appreciate the beer selection and remembering that, yes, I owned that baseball card at one point. read more

A great burger selection outside of just a cheeseburger. The Highbrow burger with melted brie was *chef's kiss*. I got the burger with a side of fries and "side" is more like an appetizer. You get enough to easily share with someone who orders the salad with their burger. Four of us split a slice of the stout chocolate cake. It was a pretty good slice of cake and gave us all our sweet fill. The servers were attentive. They were quick with filling waters, and didn't kick us out when we were busy chatting away. The painted mural and quiet (but not so quiet it's uncomfortable) makes this place a nice hang out location. It's street parking only. Awesome burgers. I had The Lowbrow bookmarked for a while and wasn't intending to stop here for lunch, but our original spot planned was closed, it worked out perfectly. My husband ordered the special, I have no clue what was on it. I have a bad memory and I also had a cocktail during lunch on an empty stomach so I definitely don't recall everything, but I was happy with both burgers. I'm sure it had guacamole...ok, I don't know, but that thing was not lacking in flavor. I ordered The Highbrow, the fancy pants version because I'm a fancy pants woman. Melted brie, caramelized onions, field greens, and roasted garlic aioli. My burger unfortunately came with a hair, it wasn't super hot either, but the servers were so apologetic and friendly. Mistakes happen and they made it right. They brought me new burger, which was hot, the cheese was melted and gooey, and they sent us home with dessert. Great food, even better service. read more

Another weekend, another brunch review. Sometimes you have to go low brow and when you do, head to south Minneapolis, you won't be disappointed. Located in south MPLS on Nicollet between 42nd and 43rd across the street from Revival (get some fried chicken after brunch - yes please!), there is plenty of on street parking for free but it can be a little busy on Nicollet so I recommend parking on a side street and stretching your legs for half a block. Lowbrow isn't the largest restaurant so a reservation helps but it is a busy, neighborhood place and expect a wait. There's also bar seating which is FCFS and the bartenders are great! As for the food - we ordered the Bacon Scallion Scramble which comes with toast and choice of potatoes (can't go wrong with either hashbrowns or herb roasted potatoes (think Rosemary). Jacki ordered the fried egg sandwich which is a very nice sandwich that comes with bacon, spinach, tomato and I recommend the spicy mayo. A single pancake costs $4 and is worth it! Don't forget to order a bloody or some Peach coffee and that's a brunch with a 4-star review on Yelp IMHO! We'll be back (actually, we went twice in two weeks). read more

This is my best friends and I's go to restaurant in Minneapolis when we are in the mood for something that hits the spot but doesn't break the wallet. You really can't go wrong with anything here but I'll explain my favorites. For appetizers - their fried pickles are on another level. They are crispy, non greasy and come with a side of delicious chunky ranch. Our favorite entree would be the basil walnut pesto melt. It is utterly divine. The extra crispy sourdough bread is spread generously with their homemade pesto and filled with tons of melted cheese. For extra protein I usually add chicken instead of turkey. This place was such a hidden find! My boyfriend and I came here on a whim looking for some food nearby on a Sunday afternoon. The tofu tacos were absolutely amazing. They were crunchy and flavorful. I had the pesto melt with turkey and it was satisfying, hearty and delicious. My boyfriend got the basil tomato chicken sandwich which was equally tasty but not too heavy. It's rare to find restaurants who offer reasonably priced meals anymore. We had Mother's Day brunch here and it was excellent! I opted for French toast. The rest of the family had some version of the Lowbrow classic. We all loved our meals. Everything was served hot and cooked just the way we wanted. Since it was a special occasion, we also decided on starting the meal with a Mimosa. I had come to the Lowbrow with a few friends for a late night dinner on a Friday night. The food was good - I got a burger and it was a pretty delicious meal. We got fried pickles for the table and they were so crispy with ranch to dip them in. Even the people who despise pickles were enjoying them. The place is a little on the loud side. I felt like I had to speak at a normal than louder volume to be heard from across the table, but that could also just be due to it being a Friday night. Good place with good food! read more

Ahhh...Valentine's Day 2024. My wife and I thought we enjoy a simple dinner at home with wine so we each ordered The Lowbrow Grilled Cheese. Traditionally, it's great...with bacon, avocado, tomato, Wisconsin cheese or a variety of extras you can indulge...but this time it was well below expectations and past experience. They used a fraction of the cheese they usually use...perhaps 1-slice. The two sandwiches differed greatly in size and the "extras" seemed to be added sparingly. To add to this disappointment, this simple "to go" meal took 2-hours to make (online order) and was 15-minutes late. The restaurant was 1/3 full so I can only speculate there may be a manpower issue because this was not our normal experience. One additional oddity was that recently on Super Bowl Sunday, we were entertaining and planned to order a bunch of their nachos plates as they really make a great plate of nachos with extras....but to my surprise, website ordering was down. I called and the voicemail said we reached them "after hours" and not to leave a voicemail. It was the middle of the day. Out of curiosity, I tried to place an order on the next day...Monday and it was the same thing so I asked the host if they were closed those days and the response was YES....because Sunday was the Super Bowl and Monday was an employee party. There was no mention of this on their voicemail or social media. It seems weird that on one of the biggest "at home" foodie days (Super Bowl), they would be closed. Perhaps they could have put that on their social media. IG posts are 3 years old and FB post not up to date. This used to be a great place for a burger, nachos, etc.... This is an update to my earlier review: I was introduced to The Lowbrow by my son, who lives in the Uptown Neighborhood. It checks all the boxes for omnivores, vegetarians and vegans. The decor is home-grown, but cozy and comfortable. The menu is ample and on Sunday, brunch is served into the afternoon hours. I initially had the Un-American Burger, which were two thin "Impossible" burgers with all the condiments you would wish for. A side of fries, fruit or salad are available. Many excellent appetizers also. Service is excellent and there is no undue waiting even when the restaurant is quite full. Food is served hot and plenty of it. Prices, for an urban restaurant, are quite good. I probably would have given the restaurant five stars, but there is no restaurant parking, only street parking, which has, so far, not been a problem - and there are no meters. A few days later I took my wife here, and she had a similar reaction to me. Comfortable, good food, and so very nice to experience a home-grown neighborhood restaurant and not a national chain (ugh). We have to drive from the north county to go here, but it's definitely worth it. Afterwards, a visit to the Mpls Art Institute. As with all good reviews, I just hope that service, food quality, waiting time, do not deteriorate. Good reviews can be a two-edged sword. read more
