Jucy Lucy, flavor reminds me of White Castle burgers from back in the day. Soo good. Love the sautéed onions and pickles on it. The cheese inside is great. The fries are filler. Nothing special, but I am glad they have fine powdered pepper for them. 100% dive bar. I will go back anytime I am in MN!

Finally got to try the iconic Matt's Bar and my first Juicy Lucy! The burger was absolutely delicious (I got it with grilled onions) - and I appreciated that our waitress told us to take a small bite first, as the cheese was basically molten hot. However, it was a great burger. Between myself and two others, we just shared an order of fries and it was enough - but we do wish they were salted better. We were lucky to get a table right away, but there was quite a line out the door on a Thursday night once we left. We got drinks right away, but the burgers and fries did take quite a bit of time to come out (which for a very limited menu felt odd). Overall, fun environment and good burger!

This place screams hole in the wall but the best kind. This place came highly recommended and was said to have the top Jucy Lucy in the state. Some things I noticed were the lack of waiters and no silverware off the break. Not sure if this is a Minnesota thing or a this place thing but it kind of threw me a bit. The burger itself was absolutely divine and the fries were pretty standard shoestrings that filled the purpose. With that being said the service was still amazing and she made sure we were taken care of. And my hat goes off to the guy cooking hundreds of burgers and screaming out "CLOSE THE DOOR"! If you're in Minneapolis this place is a staple.

Matt's Bar is always the best. Yes, you might have to wait outside on a chilly MN day, but it worth the wait. The jucy lucy is the best in town. The beer is cold, the burgers are great, the fries are delicious and the service is great. Every. Single. Time.

The best burger in the world!!! I get the grilled onions in it extra extra. They do not do raw onions here or vegetables lol I always get the double cheese cheeseburger. This place is a cash only place I think. Well, I've only paid cash when I come here for many many years there was a sign cash only. They might take credit cards now MAYBE I'm not sure but if they do they might charge you a kajillion dollars for the fees lol. Just pay in cash. Bring lots of cash cuz you're gonna want to try the double cheeseburger AND the famous Juicy Lucy. I don't ever get the juicy Lucy because it comes out to piping hot and I don't wanna wait 10 minutes to eat my food lol. Their french fries are just like McDonald's french fries but it taste a lot more fresh. It is so good. You're gonna want to get a full basket. There's always a line out the door so you gotta come here real early.

Had to stop in to try the famous juicy Lucy. Stopped in mid afternoon so luckily beat the rush. Not much seating and there is a to go line too. Old school vibe for sure. Sat at the bar and watched the Lucy's being cooked row after row. Nothing beats the smell of burgers and grilled onions. Ordered a pint and waited for the Lucy. When I got it, the bartender said to wait or cut it in half for the cheese to cool down so I did. It was a great experience. Highly recommend coming in to try a Juicy Lucy. Well worth it!

I finally tried the legendary Juicy Lucy from Matt's Bar and I was not disappointed. What's not to like about molten cheese oozing out of a savory ground beef patty? The inside is small with a cozy, divey feel. They only accept cash but have an ATM on site. We showed up shortly before 6:00 and there was no line but a line out the door quickly formed after 6:00. Definitely will be returning the next time a Juicy Lucy craving hits.

GOOD GRIEF. BEST CHEESEBURGER of my life. I had a friend visiting from NYC and took her to have a Grain Belt and a Juicy Lucy. Friendly service. No liquor but lots of other beverages of choice. This place is a state gem and institutional establishment for anyone who loves a good burger. This place was packed with charm.

Got the Juicy Lucy with onions. Awesome burger. It takes about 20 mins but worth it. Super savory.

After hiking at Minnehaha Park, we timed it perfectly to arrive at Matt's when they open and started letting people in. We were some of the first diners. By the time we ordered and looked up, the place was almost full. Waiting for our burgers (took some time since there was only 1 chef), there was a line! We got lucky to be the first batch since it took quite some time for food to come out. We got the jucy Lucy (about $11) and shared half order of fries, which is plenty enough for 2. I also got their hazy IPA. The beer tasted so good with the burger. The burger bun was kinda of dry, and the sides of the meat were dry and burnt. Luckily the cheese oozing out helped with the dryness. I think they also should have added American cheese on the outside of the burger, it would give it that moisture. But once you get to that cheese, it's quite good. Fries were nice and crunchy. Something to try, especially coming from the west coast and this really isn't a thing. CASH only!

    Jas G.

The famous juicy lucy! Honest opinion wish it had more taste to it. It tasted very bland, the cheese and the meat. the bun wasn't even warmed up. I was expecting WAYYYY more in taste for the $10 and some change price. I won't be back, I'll try somewhere new for a juicy Lucy next time. The amount of fries is great for $8 and some change. It was disappointing.

Was in town and heard that you have to try a jucy lucy so of course I went to Matt's Bar and picked one up. Due to unforeseen tummy aches I opted to pick up and take back to my hotel in downtown. They had one ready in a few mins and gave me mustard and ketchup on the side. This burger was amazing. It doesn't look like much but even 40+ mins between when it was made to when i ate it I tell ya it was still JUCY. The onions were perfect and I did add the ketchup and mustard as I wasn't sure how the melted cheese would work after waiting to eat it, but idk that the condiments were needed (but i liked it so no regrets). Highly recommend anyone visiting try them. I'd go back and next time will dine in. It is cash only however I did notice they have an atm inside.

Always crowded, you will have to wait in line.

Per their FAQ, yes, you can bring your own bun.

It can be. At the front of the restaurant or maybe in the middle. It's a little crowded but I'm sure they can accommodate.

Why is the phone off the hook?

I know they remove it because they can be super busy during the meal rush times. Otherwise call them during off -meal times to place an order.

Does any body deliver from Matt's bar?

No. They don't authorize any outside delivery services there. Per their website

Trying to call the business and neither phone number on their site is working. Does anyone know an alternate working number?

They take the phone off the hook every day so they don't have to deal wilt the people calling in. Which i don't think thats right but i guess they probably do it when they are real busy but even when their not busy they have it off the hook, so who…

A Study in Patience and Poultry: The Unhurried Charm of Cedar Inn…read more Tucked away on Cedar Street just outside the bustling Minneapolis perimeter, the Cedar Inn operates on a frequency entirely its own. It is an unapologetic local haunt, a room thoroughly saturated with what one might politely call "character." To cross its threshold is to accept a fundamental renegotiation of time: one must abandon any sense of urgency, as the kitchen operates with a deliberate, unhurried pacing that turns a quick bite into an extended residency. Fortunately, the establishment provides ample diversion for the wait. The space is a veritable playground of local wagering, boasting an array of gambling options that keep the atmosphere charged and the patrons thoroughly entertained while the culinary gears slowly turn. When the food does arrive, the results are largely triumphant. An order of twelve wings, efficiently partitioned among a trio of diners, proved to be the exact mathematical ideal for a shared appetizer. More importantly, they were a genuine culinary delight--crisp, well-sauced, and deeply satisfying. The supporting cast of sides was equally formidable; both the onion rings and the French fries achieved a flawless, golden perfection that many loftier kitchens struggle to master. The experience is not without its rustic quirks, of course. The beverage program is staunchly utilitarian, dispensing sodas strictly by the aluminum can. And while the fryer was clearly working magic on the potatoes and onions, the fried mushrooms suffered a tragic loss of thermal momentum, arriving at the table regrettably cold. "A good local pub has much in common with a church, except that a pub is warmer, and there's more conversation." -- Bill Vaughan Despite the sluggish tempo and the minor misstep with the mushrooms, the Cedar Inn remains a fundamentally great local spot. It is an establishment that knows exactly what it is, requiring only that you adjust your watch to its rhythm. I will certainly be returning--if only to surrender to the pacing once more and investigate the promised draw of their Tuesday tacos. She had a Miller Lite draft and I had a Budweiser draft. Both of us really enjoyed our meals. Portion sizes were strong. Waitress couldn't have been nicer and either the manager/owner stopped by three different times and talked to us about a repeat customer program they have in place. A very nice guy. So here we are, 38th and Hiawatha. Not a lot has changed over the years, except maybe more selections on tap. walking in from the corner door takes you into a dimly light bar with enough to seat about 10 to 12 patrons. You will also notice there is tons of seating options in the bar and into the second room. Further back you will find the game room with a bunch of pool tables and a couple dart boards for the gaming folks. The vibe in here is typical neighborhood bar, it is relaxed, the patrons are just your regular easy going folks, and you can easily chat up folks here...maybe discover a new drinking buddy! We came in to do a little day drinking, play some pull-tabs and eat some food. First and foremost, winning a couple hundred in pull-tabs already makes this a fun place to hang...actually it would have been fun regardless. The food fare is your standard bar food, however they do serve breakfast, and the entrees I saw people woofing down, I'd hit this place up for breakfast. We opted to order the pork tenderloin and the sour cream and onion burger. Both were served on toast; the tenderloin on whole wheat with pickles and onions (you need to ask for onions) with a sizable breaded tenderloin. If you want a side I.e. coleslaw, cottage cheese, tots, French fries you need to order with your sandwich. The burger served on pumpernickel had fried onions on it with the sour cream. If I lived on the south side, I'd certainly make this my second home.

Today the place was packed due to the festivities, and the parking lot was transformed into a large patio with a DJ, a small bar area, and an outdoor bbq that was slinging burgers, 1/4 pound hot dogs, tots, and popcorn chicken. There was also a meat raffle going on as well. Since it was pretty hot out, we decided to get a seat inside. The seating for today was largely communal to accommodate the large crowd, and we found a seat for the three of us. I went outside to get a smash burger, 1/4 pound hotdog, and a basket of tots. The wife stayed inside with the kiddo to order some drinks. The food cooking outside took tickets ($5 a ticket) and 5 tickets were bought for the food. Not a bad deal in my book. The food took under 10 minutes to get, and the cooks were working the fryers and flattop grill like pros. The smash burger was a nice size, came with cheese and grilled onions, and was on a brioche bun. The hot dog was a nice size, and the tots were plentiful, hot, and crispy out of the outside fryer. Run of the mill condiments were also available, and serve yourself. The wife said the smash burger was better than I make, and I make a pretty damn good burger. While we were eating, I totally felt the dive bar feel, and had the feeling this was pretty much a local bar hangout. Supposedly it's been around for over 70 years (with a name change). After eating, we went outside to see if we could win some meat in the raffle but didn't get lucky. We will come back though. Evidently every 4th Wednesday they have another meat raffle at the bar. The good news is the kiddo won a huge cake on the cake walk contest! We will definitely be back. I want to try their fried dill pickle broasted chicken. Time to eat some cake!
