The courses were genuinely well done, not just in presentation but in flavor and balance. You can tell there's real intention behind the menu, especially with the three-course brunch format that lets you try a variety without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. The drinks were easily one of the highlights. Everything on the brunch menu felt top shelf and thoughtfully crafted. The tableside espresso martinis in particular stood out, not just for the presentation but for the quality and variety of flavors. It felt elevated without being excessive. What I appreciated most is that nothing felt gimmicky. A lot of places lean heavily on aesthetics or hype, but here it actually felt like you were getting real value for what you're paying. Vibrant new restaurant in Dupont with decent food and a really fun atmosphere. We went on 8:30 on a Saturday night and definitely gave off sceney vibes at a packed bar, lounge and restaurant. Energy and music levels are pretty high. Crowd skews younger or "fun" older. While entrees seem decently priced, apps and sides were on the high side. Tried Balos last night and was NOT disappointed! The restaurant really filled up FAST so I'm glad I booked a reservation online ahead of time! They were pretty dead when we got there at 5:30, but by 6/6:30 nearly every table was full! The decor was super authentic and Mediterranean, with big windows, mood lighting, and beachy accents. The the music was loud and clubby, but didn't really disrupt my experience. From pictures and videos shared online, it looks like it can get fun and rowdy later in the evening, so even though that wasn't my experience I'd keep that in mind for late night reservations? My only note about the ambiance is that there are several small tables bunched together, so it can be tight and can likely get very loud. We were extremely impressed with the service, from the hosts to the buzzers, and most importantly from our waiter Ernest. He provided excellent recommendations, he was extremely attentive, and overall made our experience better! To drink, we tried the salted caramel espresso martini, the classic espresso martini, and the DC Mojito. All three were exceptional. The caramel martini was more of a dessert drink, and the "mocktail" mojito option hit the fruity spot! We started with the complementary hummus and fresh pita - delish! The table next to us got the spread flight which looked amazing I wish we ordered! Instead, we went with the Chilean sea bass skewers which I was not disappointed with! They were perfectly seared and the red pepper sauce was amazing! Next, we shared the lamb chops and the lobster pasta. We couldn't decide which was better. The lamb chops came with a hearty portion, perfectly cooked and seasoned. The lobster pasta came with a bisque sauce, which in my opinion was way better than the classic thick sauce I was expecting. The sauce was buttery and not as heavy, but complimented the fish well! We barely had enough room for dessert, but we had heard so many great reviews about the cheesecake we had to try! It did not disappoint!! We would love to come back here with a group to try more items from the menu, as the menu is large and has so many highlights! The downside? It's pretty expensive. This Is easily one of the best restaurants I've eaten at in DC and i don't say that lightly. The cofounders (owners of For Five Coffee) got everything right here from food, ambiance and staff. When you walk in it feels like you've stepped into the Mediterranean (at least what it looks like in Google, I've never been). Beautiful decoration all around with din lighting. There's a lounge area near the bar at the front that gives you the option of a subtly more casual seating option (couches, etc.) if you don't want the traditional fining room seating. The food and menu options are great and the portions are significant. We got the octopus which was cooked to perfect, the scallops are huge and the swordfish kebabs had kick to them. Their roasted potatoes were cooked to perfection and had a lovey tanginess to them. While the scallops were large id recommend not getting them just because its pricey for what you get. This place was great! I went there on a Friday evening for an 8 PM dinner with some friends (reservations are necessary). It was quite busy, but we were seated right away. However, I wasn't thrilled with our spot as it was right next to where the waiters were grabbing silverware. Dress Code: Be aware that there is a dress code on the weekends. Music // Starting at 8 PM, they play music, which can get a bit loud. It was manageable for our group; we had to speak above our normal volume, but we weren't yelling, so it could have been worse. Food // Cost:: The prices are on the higher side, but the generous portions make it worth it, in my opinion. Balos Chips:: These were excellent, very fresh, and the three of us couldn't finish them all. The sauce on the side and the fried cheese were unexpected but delightful additions. Spanakopita:: This was just OK. I wouldn't order it again as the sauce was more tart and harder to spread than expected, and the filling lacked a ton of flavor. Scallops:: Amazing! They were cooked perfectly. This dish is ideal if you're not looking for a large portion. The accompanying sauce was nice, and it included olives, so ask for it without if you're not a fan. Lamb:: This was fall-off-the-bone delicious and came in a very large portion. The sauce was slightly sweet, which was a nice touch, and the seasoning in both the lamb and the orzo was excellent. Highly recommended if you're looking for a great dish. Service:: Our server wasn't the most patient. It was quite busy, but they seemed rather short with us throughout the evening. Was excited to try this place, but unfortunately this newer restaurant fell short. The decor is lovely, but the tables are tightly situated and there are two oddly positioned desks where the waiters gather and enter orders. So if you're sitting in the back or immediately in the front you'll deal with additional traffic and noise (see photos). As for the food. We started with the complimentary pita and humus. It was delicious. Then we had calamari, it lacked flavor and both dipping sauces were bland. The lobster pasta had maine lobster bucatini, bisque sauce, graviera, however it was hard to eat because the lobster was not pre-cracked and stuck in its shell then I order to crack it and get the lobster meat you had to pick up the sauces lobster and hand crack it. The Lavraki is a lean, mild, sweet, flaky white branzino. The fish was particularly well cooked and the star of the meal. For the desserts the creme brûlée was underwhelming and would not recommend despite the fun spelling of the restaurant name. The Baklava was more appetizing and flavorful served with frozen Greek yogurt. A side note - service was a bit slow and it is odd that they still have not printed and finalized the dessert menu. When asking the waiter for descriptions he said he wasn't really sure. Overall I hear they have fun DJ nights. I was super excited after seeing such rave reviews on social media. Beautiful ambiance and decor. FYI - They give out cute match boxes. Staff was friendly but for this expensive of a dinner, I am looking for the staff to be a bit more polished. They provide complimentary hummus and pita chips. We started off with the tuna tartare and the balos chips. The tuna was fresh and exceptional - they don't provide any chips with it and you don't need any! As for mains, we ordered the branzino and the lamb chops. I LOVED the lamb! We also ordered a side of lemon potato's, which needed to be crispier and needed more seasoning. I really enjoyed my Filthy Greek martinis & an espresso martini. Unfortunately, they are still a new restaurant and definitely are working out some kinks. This is my second time at Balos and it didn't disappoint! After having dinner a few months ago during restaurant week, we decided to return and try the power lunch $45 price fix menu. I started with the greek salad, which was so filling and reminded me of the greek salads you get in Greece. For my sevond course, I had the very tasty seafood youvetsi ($15 uncharge but sooooo worth it), which is a seafood pasta (orzo) dish full of seafood in every bite! I was so full from the salad and pita, I couldn't finish my second course and took my desert to go! Great value, great service, great presentation and good vibes! Got sick within 40 minutes of eating the Balos Burger, was the only one at the table to order it, and was ill for the next 24 hours. I accept this could have been a one-off. The issue is how it was handled. 3 emails, 4 phone calls, 2 in-person visits, and no meaningful response. The only time I got any engagement was by physically going in. On one visit, senior management were in the restaurant but chose not to come over. I was told the issue would be escalated, and I never heard anything again. A chef also told me it is "impossible" to get food poisoning in under 24 hours, which is simply not true. I have eaten at a wide range of places, and this is the worst customer service I have experienced. Poor communication, no accountability, and no basic apology. read more

To start I got a mocktail, the apathos, which had lemon juice, ginger beer, and passion fruit. Sometimes ginger beer has a strong taste and overpowers a cocktail, but this was mild and perfectly balanced the fruity passion fruit! First we were provided complimentary hummus and pita, which the hummus was so smooth and delectable. To share we got the Balos chips and I said I could totally replace potato chips if I had unlimited access to Balos chips!! They were so delicious, thinly sliced eggplant and zucchini fried and served with tzatziki for dipping. There were even a couple pieces of fried cheese mixed in which reminded me of a Greek version of a mozzarella stick! For dinner my husband and I had the Lavraki, which is a whole bronzino fish. I felt that they took away from the dish more than they added to it. I would have been much happier with just grilled octopus, fava puree, lemon juice, and capers. I went to this restaurant for a friend's birthday dinner...I would actually rate the food a 3.5 overall but the ambiance and service were stellar. The cocktails were delicious - I had the Balos martini and just asked them to cut the licorice liqueur and it was perfect. We ordered a few apps...Tuna tartare, Balos chips (the fried halloumi on the sides could have been its own app), grilled halloumi, hamachi, aubergine salad (endive leaves with dip on them) and dips. Hands down the octopus was the best - I would have ordered this for my entree had I known. The dips were underwhelming and surprised I didn't see taramasalata on the menu - the pita is the best part about the dips. For entrees, we ordered the Greek salad, whole Black Sea bass & the chicken with lemon potatoes. Greek salad was a winner...the fish tasted too charred on the skin and had way too many bones. I couldn't quite place the taste since the char or whatever was on the bottom of the fish overpowered the flavor. I had to keep dousing it in lemon juice. The best part about the chicken was the potatoes - they really stole the plate. It's a half chicken, and the white meat was super dry (we kept putting tzatziki on it. First it was Limani, now it's Balos but Greek restaurants are popping up everywhere. I had made a reservation here on 12/09 (before the holidays) at 8pm. After arriving and being seated we ordered a bottle of red and a few cocktails. Service was good, drinks and food were also good. Unfortunately, bc we were so hungry I only managed to snag a photo of my lamb chops and not the scallops, classic spread, Greek salad or beet salad we ordered. Nothing on the menu we tried was that mind blowing hence the 3 stars. The service was 5/5 and ambiance is subjective as I prefer not to have napkins tossed all over me. My favorite Greek restaurant in the DMV is still Nostos. It's crazy seeing the similarities in both the menu here and at Limani. I'd say if you prefer loud, obnoxious people and a more lively venue come to Balos. If instead you prefer a quieter more low key evening go to Limani. read more

Firstly, this restaurant is stunning! The table settings, the interior, the bar, is restaurant feels upscale, and trendy. Balos is a really cool place to hang out. It's almost always busy, but it does mean the restaurant is quite loud. The service is excellent your server will come back multiple times and ask if you're doing okay, which I love. Our food came very quickly which I also love and the dessert platter comes with a sparkler, which is always a good show. Now, for the food, I was a little bit underwhelmed for the price point and the quality of the ambience in the restaurant. The lobster pasta presentation was beautiful, but the flavor was a little underwhelming. The lamb chops are excellent but not the best I've had, and the octopus is also quite good. I want to try more of their menu to get more of a variety. I would recommend for a fun night out a birthday dinner, but less of an intimate dinner, because it is quite busy more of a going out vibe. The prawns were cooked to perfection. The lamb was cooked medium and were melt in your mouth good. The sea bass appetizer just melted in your mouth. I highly recommend this place. I was in DC for a friend restaurant and this place REALLY impressed me. We all know better than to fill up on appetizers but each appetizer was so good I needed multiple bites of each. The dip spread is a must, the flaming cheese would be a close second. I would actually skip on the Greek salad as the cuts are pretty large making it a bit challenging to eat. The wait staff was very kind and attentive. They have an impressor espresso martini menu with several different flavor. I had the bourbon espresso drink which was bold but very delicious. I would probably save it for a drink dessert next time. The restaurant is very large which helps sound diffuse through the space. For my main dish I had the Branzino which was pretty good. I had a bite of the lamb chop as well which was very very good. The dessert platter was one of the most impressive things I've seen. The lobster pasta is amazing - super decadent though, so I recommend sharing. Oh definitely get the hummus and the watermelon feta salad! Lamb chops OF COURSE!!!!! And the baklava is *chef's kiss*! They were very attentive and proactive in ensuring we were satisfied with our meal. I came here for a friend's birthday celebration. There were 8 of us in the group. Unfortunately, I think this place simply rings hollow. It's all vibes and just decent food. The vibes are too loud, too. They play music and everyone's talking so loud. It's not a sit down and enjoy dinner type of vibe. It's definitely more of a party vibe. The drinks are alright. I think the price points are high given the quality of the food and drink. I also deduct a star because the service was bad. They took forever with our food. I think there was some issue in the kitchen or some confusion, but I think we waited nearly an hour just for our main dishes to arrive. And they rushed us after that to get us out within the time limit. I thought that was sooo disrespectful and unprofessional. It wasn't our fault the food took forever. Then, you're going to rush us out? They even knew it was a birthday celebration. Yeah, I don't think I'll be coming back to Balos after that. For $45 you can enjoy a delicious 3 course menu of customer faves like the Grilled Octopus, Lobster Pasta and more. This is a great way to enjoy the menu items as the dinner is a little pricey. What we had: Appetizers Grilled Octopus: red onions, capers, red wine vinegar, peppers The Grilled Octopus was my favorite, it was so fresh, flavorful and I enjoyed the seasonings it was paired with Greek Salad: tomatoes, cucumber, green pepper, feta, olives Steak Fries: Thick cut fries served with a side of lemon Entrees Lobster Pasta: Maine lobster bucatini, bisque sauce, graviera Their Lobster Pasta is good, their pasta is cooked al dente style. Lavraki Filet: lean, mild, sweet, flaky white bronzino, horta This is served with seasonal vegetables. Dessert: Cheesecake: mascarpone cheesecake, vyssino cherries It has a unique texture but paired beautifully with the cherry compote Galaktoboureko: custard filled phyllo pastry The service at the restaurant is amazing, all the dishes came out at a great time without a long waiting period. This restaurant also has a beautiful interior perfect for taking pictures and making it feel like you are in a different city or maybe even on an island. Wow! I cannot say enough about the quality of the food, drinks and service. We booked a reservation 2 weeks prior to be sure we could get in. Seated on time, server anticipated our every need and was so friendly and helpful. Menu was varied and had unique presentation and flavors. Probably one of the best dinners we have had in a long time. 297@: definitely come back. Only downside is the noise level - as the evening went on, the noise level was to the point we couldn't hear each other at a 2 person table. read more
