Terrible experience! Food, well there is no food pretty much in your plate, tapa place and very over priced. Let's say to understand and respect, they charge for atmosphere out there and napkins being thrown in the air in order to deliver to American people Greek experience and other bs. But 1 star is for stealing from the customers! My bill was $390 and they charged $690. I contacted them about the fraud and they never answered, never replied to my email and never refunded my money. I had to reach out to my bank to report fraudulent transaction and filed a police report. Still in process of getting my money back. Stay away from this place, don't let napkins take your money away and check your account tomorrow morning! read more

I was lucky enough to go to Balos for a company dinner! I had been wanting to try it for some time! The restaurant is beautiful and modern. I love the flower arches and Instagram-able aesthetic. We we seated in a private room off to the side for our large group. The appetizers were delicious. I really enjoyed the spanakopita and the calamari. The spreads were also very yummy. Everything was served family-style. The spicy margarita that I had was fine, but definitely not a highlight or a standout drink. The entrees were very good. I liked the salmon and the chicken a lot! Feedback from other members of our group was that they didn't like the food that much, but I disagreed. I thought the food was all pretty solid! The dessert platter was amazing. They put a little sample of everything. The service was slow but that could have been because it was a really large group. I would definitely come back again on my own. read more

First off, the restaurant is BEAUTIFUL-- the moment I walked in, I was literally transported to a super fancy place in Greece. Definitely a good choice for date night or a nice dinner with friends. Second, the food was fantastic. Oysters were good, balos chips were great, and the fish was really good too. Cocktails were well balanced and refreshing. Service was fantastic too. I will definitely be returning when I come back to DC! read more

This is the perfect spot if you're looking for well-rounded meal with an experience. I went with a girlfriend for summer restaurant week and we had an amazing time. The restaurant week menu started at a base of $65 per person and includes a starter, a main course, and a dessert. The menu includes an a nice selection of base items and items with an up charge. We started off with the watermelon's bite for cocktails. They were jalapeño infused Casa del Sol Resposado fresh watermelon, cucumber syrup lime, tajin rim. They were pretty good though we were expected a bit more of a kick. They also have a nice selection of cocktails, including three different espresso martinis. The cocktails range from $19-$23 There are also a few mocktails on the menu and those are $16. For our starters we had the tuna tartare and grilled octopus. The portions were great, a lot more than what I typically experience during restaurant week or at a fine dining establishment. Both dishes were extremely fresh. The grilled octopus was my favorite. The garnishes compliments the octopus very well and red wine vinegar tasted more like a nice glaze. For dinner we had the lamp chops and the seafood youvetsi. Both were really good. My lamb chops were well seasoned and grilled to perfection. The fries were nice and crisp. The seafood youvetsi was also great. It included orzo pasta, gilt shrimp, scallops and whole main lobster. The biggest feedback my friend had was there could've been a better shrimp, scallop ratio. Dessert was amazing. The galaktoboureko was so good! It was a nice size portion. Everything was really good and we were definitely full by time dessert came. We did spend more than we were anticipating but it was well worth it. They do have a $45 power lunch with many of the items on the restaurant week menu. There were several items on the menu I'd like to share so I know I'll be back. The happy hour menu is pretty light if you're looking for cocktails but they do have a nice selection of food items. The service was great! Our waiter was very friendly, quick and made great recommendations. I forgot to take photos but the inside of the restaurant is beautiful. It has a nice vibe in there my friend said definitely reminded her of being in Greece. Definitely looking forward to going back and crossing my fingers that the experience is just as great. read more

*power lunch review* 3 courses for $45. Overall, I was very impressed with everything, from the beautiful restaurant, he friendly staff and the delicious food. It is on the pricier side, but delicious. Starter: choose from 4 starters at the $45 rate. There are 2 salads, a soup or the spanakopita which is what I ordered. It has fresh spinach, leeks, and feta wrapped in phyllo and comes with 2. It was very good. Main Course: choose from 5 at the $45 rate. I got the Lavraki Filet which is a flaky white bronzino with a vegetable as a side. It was delicious and I highly recommend it. So much flavor and cooked perfectly. The best I've had in DC. Dessert: 3 options, I got the cheesecake and it is a huge slice and was so soo good. Ambiance: We came on a Thursday and the restaurant was surprisingly empty. The space is beautiful. read more

Went to Balos Estiatorio on Sunday for brunch. the restaurant located close to Dupont Circle. Parking was easy. The restaurant is beautiful, full of sunlight, prefect spot for Sunday brunch. They only offer the brunch menu during brunch hours so many popular dishes were not available. For brunch, they have prix fixe brunch at $45 per person, which includes starter, main and dessert. What's surprising to me is that each person at the table can choose either prix fixe or a la carte which is not common. I went for prix fixe and my wife went for a la carte. Perfect flexibility for us. For starter, I ordered the Grilled Octopus (Additional 10$), served with red onions, capers, and peppers. Not quite the taste/texture I was expecting. I thought it would be more crispy and charred but it was quite soft and tender. not bad but not my preference. For main, I ordered the Lamb Chop (Additional 10$). It came with Greek fries. I asked for medium but it came out pretty much well done so again, wasn't exactly what I expected. My wife ordered the Baklava French Toast, which was excellent, hugh portion, delicious taste, love the Greek yogurt. We ended up taking the dessert to go (Baklava) and it was amazing later when I eat at home. One thing to point out, the pita bread, it was SUPER good, and normally it's only served during dinner, you have to ask your server and it is free. Service was super friendly and polite. 20% gratuity is automatically included on the check. Overall, the food didn't quite what I expected but I love the decor and the vibe, will consider coming back for dinner. read more

The restaurant was so lovely! The music was a bit loud which made it hard to talk with friends. The food was amazing! It was a bit busy and we did wait about 45 mins before we received our main entrees. Other than that, the food was delicious! The salted caramel espresso martini however was a pass. It looked beautiful but it was entirely way too strong. I was only half way through the drink and I couldn't drink any more of it. I'll probably pass on alcohol next time. Hip & trendy new spot near the west end. This large venue has varied seating for a private dinner, group dining, date night, or at the bar. Generally, seems to be a place for large group celebrations. On a Monday night it is a bit quieter than the later part of the week when DJs are playing live music and there is a steady flow of patrons. The wait staff was very attentive checking on the table often. They quickly refilled water and cleared the table when it was time for dessert. Food seemed very limited for vegetarians. However, the dip sampler was ok. It includes a feta dip, hummus, and tzatziki. The warm pita with olive oil & rosemary pair really well with this. I was hoping for more creativity with the dips. I'd skip the Balos Chips. These are deep fried zucchini chips that come with a side of tzatziki sauce. Honestly, no flavor to these...it lacked some spices/seasoning. The dessert was good. Baklava probably the best item. Overall, beautiful inside but limited for vegetarians. I'd come for a drink and appetizer. Seems harder to get in Thurs-Sunday when there is a DJ. It is often a celebrity hot spot as well if you want to try and spot someone while in town. read more

Balos was an amazing time. The aesthetics-gorgeous. The food & drinks-expensive but worth it. We did this group seafood platter among the 3 of us that consisted of a fish that you can't really get in the states, reminded me of branzino, big prawns, and large succulent scallops. Brussel sprouts, perfect if you like them charred and flavorful, a mix of sweet and mesquite. The Island Passion cocktail is a popular go-to here, and I can see why, you can choose tequila or vodka, infused with passion fruit, guava, boba, and lime. Very easy to sip and easy to ask for a 2nd round. The customer service was attentive. Coming back? Yes. The restrooms are a whole vibe, gotta get the priceless selfie with the faux lavender Wisteria hanging from the ceiling. Look pretty/eat good. read more

Disclaimer: I love Mediterranean cuisine and lived in Greece! So, I ventured over to Balos over the weekend for my birthday dinner. The atmosphere was loud and music was turned up as well. Table service was okay. But let's get into the food. For appetizers, I ordered 1. Grilled Octopus 2. Fried cheese 3. Balos chips 4. Lamb meat balls 5. Shrimp. The appetizers were the best of the dishes. For the main course we ordered 1. Whole branzino 2. Scallops 3. Steak kebabs. The sides are not worth mentioning. The birthday cheesecake was so thick it was literally like a brick. Lastly, it turns into a lounge of so sort after 9 pm with a DJ and IG models everywhere. Also, the bathrooms are oddly situated in the restuarant were it interferes with the kitchen runs. The best things I had were the grilled octopus and balos chips. read more

I went on a Wednesday after work in the atmosphere was a little quiet considering it was 6 PM on a weekday, but the service was great and all the food was so fresh. I would love to go back on the weekends when they have a DJ and do the napkin throwing. I thought all the food was very good and my favorites were the grilled octopus and sea scallops. They brought out fresh pita and dips, which were also very delicious! It is quite pricey so definitely is a place to go for a special occasion. read more

Very good esthetics & decor. The music is way too loud though, even before the DJ started at 9pm. Food was ultimately good. There was an issue with my order and they re-fired it quickly. Granted, the manager made a point to say it was my preference versus the fact it was undercooked fish, which seemed unnecessary. Service overall was good. Balos was quite the experience. I went for a friend's birthday on a Saturday night in a group of 7. I would definitely go back. The food was great - flavorful and presented well. Everyone enjoyed their entrees. The drinks were also great - their espresso martini (my go-to) was solid. The energy and ambiance of the place is a lot of fun. It gives Miami vibes - a lot of well dressed and attractive people - fun music and dim lighting. It was quite noisy though, so probably not the best for an intimate date. The highlight of the night was the napkin toss. People were on top of chairs and it added to the birthday energy. Cons - it gets packed quickly. The bar area was a jungle. There are also not enough bathrooms for how packed the place gets. We waited in line FOREVER and the line was long all night. Also, the service wasn't the best. It seemed that all of the servers were tired and/or annoyed (not surprising given how packed the place was). read more

I was eager to try this restaurant after I saw an "Eater" newsletter that talked about the best soups available in DC restaurants. They praised Balos's avgolemono soup. I always enjoy a good avgolemono soup so we set out to give it a try. We made a reservation for a Saturday dinner at 5:30 p.m. Getting there was easy. We took Metro and got off at Dupont Circle's 19th St. exit. From there, it was a short walk to N Street. Balos was practically next door to the Colada Shop. On arrival, we let them know we had a reservation and were seated immediately. We were given a 4 top right by a window. What impressed us was while they do have lots of tables, there is ample room to move around. The decor included many architectural touches that are found in Greek buildings, several arched entry ways. Many Greek restaurants have blue walls but Balos used muted beige tones. Even though the place wasn't full, it was still very loud. Our server was prompt getting to us. He asked for our drink orders. I splurged and ordered a salted caramel espresso martini while my husband tried a Greek beer, Mythos. While my drink was okay, it would have been better if more of the promised salt was there. Doing so, would have elevated it quite a bit making it a unique take on this drink. My husband said his beer was "okay". We started out with avgolemono soup. The portion was a bowl (although it would have been nice to have the option of a cup). It was generous with the stock---lots of chicken (both white and dark meat) and plenty of rice. The lemon flavoring was there but not very strong. That was a disappointment as a good avgolemono should have the lemon prominently featured. This soup ate like a meal! Also, we were given complimentary hummus and small, soft triangles of pita bread for dipping. My husband liked this so much that he told me I better try some before he ate it all! It was good. The hummus had a nice, smooth texture and good flavor. For my entree, I ordered "Grilled Ora King Salmon" which came with: "asparagus, spinach, tobiko, cauliflower sauce". It was perfectly prepared and the portion was large. I was so surprised at the amount of asparagus as it was very generous. It was placed on a bed of spinach with the salmon on top. I'm a fan of asparagus so I appreciated that it was tender yet still firm. My husband ordered "Sea Scallops" which came with: "tomatoes, olives, lemon". He also ordered a side of "grilled vegetables" which consisted of: "tomato, eggplant, zucchini, sweet peppers". He enjoyed his scallops and said they were perfectly cooked. We both enjoyed the grilled vegetables. My husband, who normally doesn't like eggplant, ate just about all of it. I noticed that the eggplant wasn't evenly grilled and the piece I tried was bitter. The rest of the veggies were well prepared. We decided to try a piece of baklava for dessert which we shared. It was a disappointment as it wasn't fresh although it was honey soaked and filled with walnuts. It came with a small scoop of what appeared to be frozen, plain yogurt. We were given spoons to use which made eating the baklava difficult as baklava doesn't cut easily with a spoon. This was a splurge of a meal, to be sure. While, overall, we did enjoy dining here, due to the cost we won't go often. Next time, I would skip the salted caramel espresso martini and pass on the baklava. read more

The food was good and the drinks were okay. Service from the bussers was excellent--they deserve all five stars. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience had several issues and disappointments. We visited for a birthday celebration, and while we saw other guests receiving special attention and even complimentary birthday desserts with candles, our party received no acknowledgment at all. We even paid for two cakes and still got zero recognition from the staff. Additionally, after we were given the bill, I looked it over, and then it was taken back and the price was increased for no apparent reason. Overall, the inconsistencies in service and the unexpected bill change made the experience disappointing. read more

I love Balos for brunch (definitely prefer it over dinner)! Our waiter was super attentive and patient with us while we were being indecisive about what to order. The French toast was my absolute favorite - so good! The only downside was the NY strip, which came out very chewy and well-done even though I asked for it medium well. For drinks, we tried the pineapple margarita, Santorini spritz, and matcha espresso martini - all were amazing! Just a heads-up: the grilled octopus appetizer has a $10 upcharge! read more

If you want to be instantly swept away to Greece while physically being in the DMV area, then Balos Estiatorio is the place for you. The ambiance exudes an upscale Grecian aesthetic. I went for brunch, where they offer a $45 brunch menu consisting of a three-course meal. I had the Onion Soup(superb and very cheesy, which I love), steak and eggs (amazing), and the baklava (out of this world). They also have a $45 bottomless drink menu. This is not your average bottomless mimosas, Bellinis, and Bloody Marys. Their drink menu features many variations of espresso martinis, which are brought out on a bar cart and made right in front of you. In fact, all the drinks from the bottomless brunch are crafted tableside. We're used to bottomless drinks being made with cheap liquor, but not here. They use premium alcohol in their bottomless drinks. As for the staff, they are incredibly welcoming and genuinely care about your experience. Elmer, our waiter and bartender, was a ray of sunshine. Jack, the manager, ensured we enjoyed our food and made sure everything was perfect. A special shoutout to Chef Alex Oradea--thank you for the care and love you put into the food! Never been & will likely never go..I planned to visit for brunch with a group and called before hand for clarity on the bottomless brunch drink verbiage on their website. The call was extremely uncomfortable, although I was simply trying to convey that I don't drink alcohol. The conversation was drawn out and awkward as it was being laid out to me I'd have to pay for drinks I wouldn't be consuming. Eventually the manager got on the phone, she was more friendly but the damage was done. She said she would "put a note" on the reservation, which in itself seems extremely dramatic & odd - a note on a reservation that someone doesn't drink. Ultimately, the staff made a big deal of my inquiry on the phone and I didn't trust that they wouldn't do the same at the table in front of others. I've opted not to go out with my friends, mostly out of fear of embarrassment and am planning to go somewhere alone that is more sober friendly. I encourage other non drinkers to do the same. read more

Incredible food; subpar service! After trying to get a reservation for weeks, I was finally able to dine at Balos while visiting DC. Our reservation was at 9pm which was late for dinner but perfect to catch the end of the night celebration. For our appetizers, we went with the grilled octopus and shrimp Saganaki. For our entrees, I got the lamb Youvetsi and my friend got the Sea Bass Fricassee. We thoroughly enjoyed all of our food. Now on to the service, our server was terrible. He was not attentive at all and also very slow. At the end of the night, we waited almost 20 minutes for our check. Our server never came so we had to grab the manager's attention when he walked by. Food The food is the best part of the experience at Balos. All the appetizers were excellent and better than the entrees. Calamari, Spanikopita, and Balos Chips were all excellent. We had a 5:30pm Friday reservation for a party of 5. Running a little behind, I called ahead with our ETA of 5:43pm, which was still within their 15-minute grace period. The host appreciated the call, and when we arrived the restaurant was fairly empty--maybe 10 diners total. Despite this, it took about 10 minutes to be seated. First, we were told our table was ready, then told to wait, and finally sat at a small round table in the middle of the restaurant. Because we enjoy dining by ordering multiple dishes per person to share and cocktails, we knew this setup wouldn't be comfortable. We requested a larger table, and thought nothing of it especially since the restaurant was mostly empty and we saw several parties of 3 seated at 4-tops. What followed left us disappointed. On my way to check the happy hour menu at the bar, I noticed the server and hostess exchanging gestures toward our table that suggested our request was unreasonable. Meanwhile, our party had no space for bags; when we asked for hooks, the server returned with only three instead of the four we needed. Then, another host approached to tell us the round table "usually seats six" and that removing the wine glasses would make more space--an odd assumption, considering we never said or alluded to never wanting drinks and in fact planned to order cocktails instead. At that point, it was clear our comfort and dining experience weren't being prioritized. With so many excellent options in DC, we decided to take our time and our money elsewhere. I hope Balo's improves its ability to accommodate future diners, or at a minimum, assess their assumptions and delivery when communicating their inability to accommodate because our experience left much to be desired. read more

I enjoyed my experience at Balos and am looking forward to trying their lunch special during the week and dinner on the weekend. I went to brunch at Balos this past weekend and was first just mesmerized by the beauty of the restaurant. Very clean, neutral-aesthetic. There's a ton of seating there which is also really nice. Our waiter was very accommodating. The brunch menu doesn't have crab cakes on it but our waiter said he could still ask the kitchen to do it. There was a mocktail I saw that I wanted to make a cocktail and they also accommodated. My friend got the crab cakes egg Benedict and enjoyed them but the poached egg wasn't runny, which surprised her. I got the steak and eggs and also enjoyed them. The steak didn't wow me but it was your typical steak frites which was more than good enough for me. We also enjoyed our drinks. There was a mixup with our order originally. Our original order were crab cakes, steak and eggs, and one of their fish dishes. However, they accidentally brought out crab cake eggs Benedict instead of the crab cakes. My friend actually didn't mind eating that, so I took her order of the steak and eggs and we canceled the fish. The crab cakes as an app ended up coming out as well. To accommodate for the mixup, our waiter didn't charge us for one entree, which I thought was good customer service. Everything also came out timely and our waiter was nice. read more

Came here for brunch a few weeks ago and had an amazing meal! Their Pre-Fixe Brunch menu is awesome. Not something I'd normally do but it's really an amazing meal.
