This place really hit the spot on our day in Ogunquit. We arrived after driving from Portland hungry and un-caffeinated and walked down from our parking across town. Their little shop was busy but not overwhelming, and service was prompt and accurate. Counter order, which we love. They have lots of options for lunch, including numerous vegetarian choices, and all your standard coffee options. We got large iced coffees (which were quite good) and caprese paninis. Everything was ready quickly and very fresh and delicious. We sat in their small dining room and had a great meal. Prices were reasonable too. The perfect pitstop. read more

My daughter and I went twice, with a 6 mo & 20 mo olds. Good for toddlers. Cold brew was excellent., Cheese and Chive biscuit was savory and wonderful. Blue Berry muffin and cream cheese bagel were good. We will definitely come back again!!! read more

Great tasting espresso. Got an almond milk latte and could actually taste the espresso. Quite good! The breakfast offerings looked great, too. Hipster coffee in Ogunquit? Not sure what this world is coming to but I think I like it. Backyard Coffeehouse has a pretty cool atmosphere with a large inside with lots of seating and outdoor seating as well. It's located right near the center of town but not along the main street so it's a little more calm away from the shopping and eating frenzy that is Shore Road and Route 1. The coffee is quality with pour-overs and espresso based drinks. Haven't tried the food (yet) but it looks very good. Service is solid as well. All in all a great spot for some much-needed caffeination. read more

What a great spot in Ogunquit. It's tucked away next to the Cumberland Farms off of Main Street, but you can get to it from Shore Road as well through the Muni lot. As a Mama to a 7 month old, I need my coffee. This place serves it up just right! I enjoyed their cold brews, lattes, and their food as well. This place is stroller and pet friendly. Lots of things for baby to look at and there are some books in the back to entertain your kiddo. They even have a little patio outside in case your babe is a screamer (like mine) and needs some fresh air. Service was fast and efficient. I liked how the lady behind the register remembered my kiddo from the day before. The playlist was sweet and their bathrooms are clean. We will definitely be back! read more

We were in Ogunquit for a short family vacate from LA to visit relatives and found Amy's place by chance as we snooped around town looking for maybe a juice bar (nope) and maybe some good coffee (yep! -- right here!!). The building is hers, so she can do with it what she wants, and over time they will be making improvements, etc. She might even build up and put in an office for herself 'upstairs'... But, the coffee (specifically the two caps I had on two consecutive days) were astonishingly good. Amy made mine on a Tuesday, and it was SUPERB (and even beautiful to look at -- I almost didn't want to drink it, the design was so pretty), so we stopped back in the next morning on a rainy Wednesday morning as we headed out of town. I was worried because Amy did not make my cap that time -- she was busy with office work at the counter (!!) -- so her cohort with the lavender hair made mine this time... And again, it was SUPERB! So good. My wife really enjoyed her decaf as well, and my boys loved their hot chos and crumbly tidbits to eat. The Backyard serves the kind of coffee Starbucks only wishes they could create. Seriously -- Amy and crew know what they are doing. The room is wide open and airy, so not particularly intimate, but as a result it also makes for a good gallery setting, and the current show by artist Asia Kepka is interesting and evocative (see:http://www.asiakepka.com/). Before ordering I asked if the bagels were New York style and the girl at the register didn't know (and didn't ask anyone to find out). I took a chance and ordered a toasted bagel and cream cheese. The bagel was burnt and they forgot the cream cheese. My husbands hummus bagel sandwich had no flavor and when he asked for onions on the sandwich they said they can only add them to the side NOT on the sandwich! No clue why. There is nothing unique about this breakfast stop. The food quality is mediocre and the prices are too high for the quality. If you're looking for a quick way to blow $7+ on a less than Dunkin Donuts quality breakfast sandwich (and smaller), this is your place. I gave it two stars because the food didn't taste bad, but it wasn't good either. Tucked away behind a Gas station this place you might just miss and drive on by. You can order online or at the counter. Food and drinks came out quick. Not a huge selection, but prices are reasonable. I ordered a breakfast sandwich, bagel with cream cheese, Smooth Criminal and a apple juice. Not a ton of flavor, but still good. Outside seating is very cute and trendy. Definitely worth the 5 min walk from our hotel. read more

Did the chef already take off and is there a monkey in the kitchen? From the tasteless milk infused egg and burnt bacon sandwiches, to some weird granulated sugar covered oversized flavorless donut hole, and a very bland rock hard chocolate chip muffin; did we just get the left over from the weekend before? Passing through Ogunquit and stopped here for lattes and scones. Hot lattes were delicious (albeit not overly strong--which can be good or bad depending on your preference). Husband and I the cherry lemon scone and vegan blueberry scones. Both were delicious! Blueberry scone wasn't very sweet but very "buttery" (not sure what they used as a sub but i couldn't tell the difference I didn't know). Cherry lemon scone was a good mix of sweet and tangy! Both were crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside--not dry at all! Overall would definitely recommend! read more

Delish!!! We loved the vibe and the food. Fried egg & cheese sandwiches on yummy brioche were cooked enough to make it feel more like scrambled...so it wasn't runny, a big plus in our book. Get the blueberry scone!!! So beyond delicious. Don't get the yogurt parfait though- the serving size and taste were underwhelming. Just stopped in for an iced coffee to cool off. It looked too cute from the outside to pass up. Loved the artwork inside and the barn feel. Looks like they made their own chairs out of old plywood - surprisingly comfortable! Close enough to the beach & downtown to be convenient, but far enough away to be relaxing. I'm not a fan of crowded tourist destinations. Waiting in long lines, crowded sidewalks, the noise and congestion, I might as well just stay home. My other option is to go out of season. Ogunquit Maine is a good example. I love it there but only when it's quiet, and I'm not fighting for breathing space, the problem is many restaurants and business are closed during the off-season as is Backyard Coffeehouse and Eatery. This place is one of the best coffee shops I've been to in a long time. They do everything right, from the rustic charm of the business to the friendly customer service, and fantastic coffees, pastries, and food. My first morning in Ogunquit found me there with a latte and pastry. The coffee was not over-roasted (i.e., not bitter) and the pastry was out of this world. It was deliciously sweet and chewy and made every bite a memorable one. I was so impressed with Backyard I went back for lunch the same day. Their lemon ginger iced tea was spicy and tart and sweet all at the same time and paired perfectly with their Village Green Salad consisting of spring mix, avocado, feta cheese, candied pecans and a honey mustard dressing. My only complaint, if I had to make one, is that they are not open year around. I get it. I do, but it doesn't make me happy as the next time I'm in town they won't be open, and frankly there is no other place in Ogunquit to get a good cup of coffee and pastry. And yes I know there is another place down the road...well, that's for another blog. If you're in Ogunquit or even just passing through, stop by Backyard, it's worth it. In response to the response from Backyard Coffeehouse: That all sounds lovely about handrolled artisanal bagels from Portland, but I'm telling you the bagel I had was stale and barely edible. Frankly, I'm insulted by your response in that you imply it's MY fault I didn't like the disgusting bagel I was served, since you apologized for me not liking the "artisanal style of bagel" as if I'm not refined or cultured enough to appreciate it. I assure you that's not it. The bagel was crap. I live in NYC and am lucky enough to have several options for delicious, handrolled, FRESH artisanal bagels and I love them! So I'm pretty sure my bagel was just terrible and the issue is not that I'm too dumb to know what a good bagel is. Oh and also, when I complained about my bagel being cold the barista said it had been "toasted at some point," which is completely unacceptable as all bagels should only be toasted after the customer requests it...and you never even mentioned that in your response. You were too busy blaming my crappy bagel experience on me being an uncouth heathen. read more
