Very cute shop and nice people, but not impressed with the pizza. It's okay, just not something I'd seek out. I ordered a basic margarita with fresh mozzarella and black olives. Another reviewer summed it up well: scarce toppings, cornmeal crust is too thick and chewy, sauce isn't exceptional, which is unfortunate because you end up tasting it a lot by itself since there are so many gaps with the toppings. The fresh mozzarella was good, just not enough of it. The black olives were put on whole without slicing, which I hadn't seen before, and seemed less than ideal because when you take a bite anywhere near them, they'd roll around the slice or fall off. While I hate to diss a local place, the end product didn't excite me and I don't plan to order from them again. There are so many pizza options in the DC area, and I'm fine with going a few blocks farther away to get something other than Bacio. read more

Pizza is a half-step above Domino's. Crust is chewy with corn meal on the bottom. Salad was prepackaged like airport food and came with an inedible, unknown substance in it (pictured.) The tiramisu was also pre-packaged and leaking, not as pictured, and tasted like it was made days ago. Extremely disappointing for the price. I looooooooooooooove this pizza place. I decided to stop by the first time I came here on a whim, decided to take my mom to a nice dinner to thank for driving me home and it was conveniently located near my place and it amazed me! The pizza here is incredibly delicious. I believe the sauce is house made, all the ingredients are fresh, it's rich in taste, and just overall makes me happy when I eat it. My favorite pie is the Bloomingdale. So freaking good. There's a walk-in window downstairs, a nice indoors sitting area upstairs, and a lovely patio area. Really neat little spot! We were looking for something quick and close by for our last night in DC. Situated in a beautifully decorated older home, Bacio was everything that we needed it to be. I created my own pizza with fresh mozzarella, Italian sausage, and roasted garlic. I was hoping for the Italian sausage to be ground, but I suppose the slices were more authentic. My husband ordered the Seaton Farm. He did say the prosciutto almost made it too salty. We were happily satisfied when we left. Keep it up! read more

I ordered an artichoke pizza and had a scoop of ice cream while I waited, because if one thing make me happy, it's pizza and ice cream. The caramel ice cream was fine, but I had tasted the strawberry and wish I had gone that route. Anyway, the pizza was ready quickly and quite delicious. A small can feed two people. Tons of cheese and artichokes, the right about of sauce, plus a crisp, tasty crust. I love Bacio and cannot wait to return. read more

People don't generally like getting pizza with me because I suggest weird toppings and they're like "no, we're getting pepperoni" and then they throw me in a closet and lock the door and don't let me out until all 13 episodes of Dawson's Creek are over. Which is why I like Bacio because I can get my weird toppings (proscuitto, arugula, and garlic! roasted red peppers, anchovies and basil! ...anyone?) on a small pizza and eat it all by myself. Toppings are pricey though, which is why I'm slightly chafed that toppings on a small and on a large cost the same amount ($1.50). Beyond the toppings, the mozarella cheese is fresh and melty. The crust is chewy and coated in cornmeal to give it some crunch. Also, the little bird on their website is cute. I kinda feel like Bacio represents the St. Louis Arch in DC gentrification's march eastward. Or... am I reading too much into this? Should I buy real estate in Bloomingdale? We lucked out with seating for 6 at 6pm on a Saturday evening. The seating is veryyyy limited. Nice beer menu, but nothing on draft. The arugula salad and the spinach salad were very good. Caesar salad was nothing special , but good. We got a variety of pizzas, all regular crust. Common good, crispus attucks (best of the group), and the Randolph place. The service was great. A very small place enmeshed in a residential area right near the dividing line between NW and NE. No space to eat inside, and only a couple of tables outside. They have "carryout specials", which is a bit odd given that carryout would seem to be the default. You order, and they give you one of those remote activated buzzer things so you can wander around until it's ready. The aforementioned specials emphasize their salads, which cost almost as much as a pizza, which appears to be justifiable given their relative size and quality. The pizza tasted like, well, pizza. With so many wild specialty pizzas and regional variants in vogue around DC, it seems almost retro to have something that's basically just dough, sauce, and one type of cheese (their specials also include one free topping). A pizza plus the salad and a drink seemed small and the price (close to $20 with tax) seemed high, but it was filling enough that I'll likely get two moderately sized meals of salad/pizza, which ends up not being bad. It was, ultimately, a quintessential three-star pizza. I enjoyed it, but it didn't excite my tastebuds, and I've definitely had better pizza in DC. Which leaves me nonetheless at a four-star rating with a small monologue to accompany it. It's a small business with a local emphasis. The salad was rather more interesting and tastier than the pizza, and we should all perhaps be placing more emphasis on our salads. They've got San Pellegrino, and a local brand of ice cream that looked rather appealing. They do gluten-free crusts and carry vegan cheese, among a decent topping selection. And someone took the time to hand-write the words "thank you" on the side of the pizza box. Given that I went on an hour walk in sweltering heat to a neighborhood place outside my neighborhood just to kill some time and treat myself to something, thank you is right. My conclusion is this: do business the right way, and I'm going to leave with a positive vibe and an inclination to see if I can perhaps try some different pizza toppings and get a little more flavor. read more

You walk in and see a small counter to order for an outdoor patio, or venture upstairs to a mismatched dinning room that feels like your own home. The waiters are extremely friendly, and the food is better than you'd expect. Pizzas: Common Good (Large for 2 at $16.95): A A powerhouse of vegetable and perfect thin crust, this is the perfect pizza to split between two people with perfect people watching. Dessert: Nutella Cake ($5): A. I am SO PICKY with chocolate cake, but I can tell you this one was worth every bite. Perfect buttery frosting, dense cake, great flavor and texture. I've figured out that for some people, traveling is a way for them to be happy but for me, I'm perfectly content trying out a new restaurant, an activity I find more sustainable in more than one way. First I get to support my local community; second I get to share a good experience and third I can afford going out to local places more than I can afford overseas trips, reducing my carbon footprint and putting money back into my neighborhood. Since I've been car free, I prefer to choose places that I can walk to or take the metro to, and Bacio, while a bit of a hike from the metro, was completely worth the impromptu trip with a friend after work. We arrived shortly after its 4 pm opening yesterday and found ourselves walking up to a beautiful patio and restaurant/store. There was a mini playground set up, suggesting a neighborhood friendly place to take young children, planters with fresh basil, lights strung up around the patio, and a bunch of picnic tables at the ready for al fresco dining. My friend and I chose to sit inside on the first floor and have service. I ordered the Eckington while she ordered the Bacio's Margherita. We both opted for the small 10", which they qualify as being "good for one person". I personally ate half because I ate a big pasta lunch, but my friend ate the whole thing. We both agreed it is the best pizza we've had in the DC area. The cornmeal crust is top notch, and it doesn't hurt they use organic ingredients and support other local businesses by offering their products for sale. The plan was to come to the neighborhood for Grassroots Gourmet but when I suggested pizza, she was up for it. We were more thrilled to see that they had red velvet (the real reason we came) and chocolate cakes from Grassroots Gourmet but decided to go to the actual storefront itself only to find out that cake slices are not sold so we went back to Bacio. This time, we chose to sit upstairs, where there was slightly more space and much cooler. Downstairs was sweltering and while it could have been because we were eating fresh hot pizza that was generous in toppings and didn't fall apart, we didn't want to endure sweating so much the second time. The server was the same in both instances and was very sweet and accommodating. We encountered lovely service all around. Upstairs is a lovely area with a couple of booths, an interesting wagon wheel table, and a couple of tables in the front part of the row house where my friend and I chose to sit. It's a beautiful and peaceful place and kind of makes it hard to believe there's been so much violence in the Shaw neighborhood lately. The cake was good, a little dry, probably from being sliced and in the fridge for some time, but the frosting was sublime. It had a beautiful shimmer, was rich and creamy but sugary and light, all at the same time. Each time my friend ordered something besides water to drink. The first she chose red wine, the second time, she chose prosecco so they sell alcohol and I saw DC Brau in the counter fridge. They also sell dog treats, cards, Moorenko ice cream, Uncle Chip cookies, and soda. read more

I was staying with a friend who lives in the neighborhood and spied this little baby right on the corner of his street! It's a cute little storefront that piqued my curiosity, so I asked him about it and his eyes literally lit up! Their hours are a bit strange, so I had to wait until 4pm to go over and order my pizza. They have a little patio outside, great for summer, but a very small indoor area. You *could*, in theory, sit in and enjoy your pizza but I wouldn't recommend it. The setting inside is hard to describe but sitting in is not really feasible and I would definitely say its better to order by phone or whatever option they allow than it is to pick up because of the way its set up. Get in and out quickly before someone else comes behind you and getting out because a bumpy road. However, do not be put off by the lack of indoor space. It is a bit on the pricey side, but only because they try to use fresh, local ingredients to prepare (so, the prices definitely reflect that). You can make your own pizza or you can do one of their "creation" pizzas if you so desire. I went with the ladder, but further customized my Eckington with spinach, black olives, roasted garlic, and red peppers. It took approximately 10 minutes to come out. The pizza crust is somewhat thin for the sheer amount of toppings I asked to be on it, however- if you don't customize with so much stuff it pairs perfectly with the original creation pizza. All in all, they have good pizza and the young women who took my order were very sweet and polite (not too sociable though, which kind of made me feel awkward as I waited since I was the only person in the store and the tv was not playing anything but some slideshow of photos). I will be back to try the ice cream everyone raves about. read more

After eating here for 7 years - it's about time I gave them their props. Bacio might very well be the best pizza in DC and definitely top 3. What might impress me the most is the consistency of their high quality pizza making. The crust is amazing and always cooked to the same crispness. The tomatoes in their sauce always taste fresh and all of their ingredients are clearly high quality. Besides enjoying great pizza - it's great to know you are supporting a local family owned business when you eat here. The family that owns this place are always delightful. This is one of the finest newly renovated eateries to enter this neighborhood, which is changing for the better. The renovations were perfectly tailored for this property. Over the summer there are tables out front and a little slide and bench set up for the youngsters. Its a real family and neighborhood friendly restaurant and pizza place. Many of the churches order their food from here because its so good and the owners are really sweet and caring. They have put their heart and soul into Bacio. The wine was fantastic. The Pizza was fantastic (coming from a New Yorker). And I hear the calzones are special too. read more

This is a gem of a place in the great Bloomingdale area. The decor is pleasingly warm and homey, and reflects the positivity of the welcoming staff. (Manager Miles is especially friendly!) They have a lot of fresh, local and unique toppings to choose from, like cherry tomatoes, arugula, and whole basil leaves, plus standards that I love like artichoke hearts and anchovies. I like that they purchase locally (including the deserts!), and you can tell in the quality. I got the Margherita pizza with prosciutto (I forget what it's called) and it was super tasty. The hand-tossed crust has that artisanal feel, with the fluffy, bubbly edges. I'm curious to try the thin-crust next! Bacio is a true neighborhood place, even adding a pizza to the menu and naming it for a group of customers who kept ordering a certain combo. That's the kind of heart I love to see in a locally-owned business. Bacio is known for take-out, but the dine-in restaurant is where it's at. With a nice wine selection, and a little cove overlooking the outdoor patio, Bacio makes a great date place, too. Give Bacio a try! read more

Holy pizza heaven! Wow. Incredibly good thin crust pizza. Fresh, uber-flavorful crust and remarkably tasty ingredients. We dropped in after hearing rave reviews from friends. Needed to get ours to go. Husband and I split a Port City Optimal Wit while we waited. Sat on their lovely large patio. The staff was friendly and laid back. We ordered the Seaton -- and no cheapies on the toppings: roasted peppers, pesto, special mozz, fresh tomatoes, prosciutto, and we added roasted garlic. Flavor explosion. This little magical place caught my attention while driving back to the apartment in my Uber. The little outside patio reminded me of the little restaurants in Paris, or Rome. The little second floor windows were cute enough to enchant me, and choose this restaurant for dinner. We ordered the Eckington pizza. The pizza was deliciously cheesy and meaty! Great pizza. Probably the best margherita I've had this year even though it was not a traditional Neapolitan. Great sauce along with the sliced cherry tomatoes perfectly zinged with the buffalo mozzarella and basil. The eating area inside is tight with just two tables. Your best bet is on the patio unless you use a wheelchair. Then there's no place to eat since there's a step to the patio. Even the path from the entrance to the inside counter to order is not wheelchair accessible either because of a small table. Even though it's a converted house, these barriers are easy to remove and should have been. read more
