    Veggie Omelet plate
    Jeff B.

I had a pretty good time here this past Sunday. I stopped by here after church, and after having it recommended earlier in the morning. I ordered brunch or breakfast at lunch. I got the Veggie Omelet. It came with toast and hashbrowns. The Omelet was loaded with fresh veggies. The outcome was a very tasty breakfast. This diner seems to be family run and everyone was operating in cohesion as they served their patrons. The process was quick and I was eating shortly after ordering. The place is not fancy, thus the name diner. However it has functional furniture and heart. If you haven't tried Austin Diner, then you should! Thank you to the staff for making this a real nice experience.

I came here on a Monday morning so we got seated right away. The look inside is very old-timey classic diner. The menu has some good offerings, but we went with a kids meal and biscuits with sausage gravy. The food temp was good and everything tasted okay. Not extremely memorable but filling and enjoyable. We appreciated the pickle spear that came with the chicken tenders and fries.

Longhorn Skillet and banana nut pancakes

We appreciated the classic diner vibes and good prices for Austin. The food was just okay, but we had a good time. I was happy with how big the portions were without the high prices. I ordered the Longhorn skillet, while my friend ordered the banana nut pancakes. We were both not impressed by the banana nut pancakes. They did not taste as good as the name sounded. I realized after receiving my skillet that I should have asked for no gravy. The menu did say "smothered in sausage gravy," so I should have considered that. It was such a huge, thick layer of gravy. It wasn't a big deal as I could scrape it all off to the side, but it was just an unpleasant sight to see. The meat (I think it was bacon) was sooooooo salty. I thought the rest of the skillet was really good though. I liked the eggs, vegetables, and potatoes. The pancake tasted somewhat bland and was not fluffy. The service was good.

Stopped in to try this place out from a friend's recommendation. I ordered from the breakfast menu and had a Veggie Omelet. The food was pretty good. I added pepper and just a pinch of salt from the shakers. The Omelet was the best. The coffee was good. The service was real good. Everyone of the staff seemed to fit well together moving the patrons in and out smoothly. The ambiance is diner style. No frills just the basics but in good condition. There is bar and booth seating. Parking wasn't an issue either. Thank you Austin Diner for a nice experience! I will be back.

    The California Omlette

If you're looking for an authentic old school diner experience this is the spot! I really love their French toast and my fiancee got The California Omlette which came with really good grits! Servers are really nice and attentive! Also can't beat the price, you're not going to get hit with a crazy bill for a "diner experience" like at some other places, names I won't mention.

Come hungry! The food is tasty for being classed as diner food. The waitresses that were working when we went were working together rather than have separate sections, which made wait time seem shorter than other places. The 50s style is fun and they have old appliances as decoration, which is pretty cool. We'll definitely be back!

Perfectly fine but nothing special. Big menu, typical of good ol' diners, and good solid diner food. Nice decor with a bit-fake retro look, and comfy but old seating. Very friendly service, and loved hearing the crew shouting and laughing in the back.

Migas, refried beans, seasoned roasted potatoes (home fries), tortillas
    Kim C.

First time trying this place and it did not disappoint. There's something on the menu for everyone! I had the Migas which had my preferred finely chopped onion & jal. Not big or chunky. Home fries = potato chunks seasoned & roasted. Hubby had Laura's Big Time plate. It had a little bit of everything- 3 eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns and pancakes. People working gave us a nice, genuine vibe - very welcoming. My introverted, quiet hubby said while we were leaving- I feel like I've made new friends and have a new place-:) We sat at the bar area and saw all the food being delivered. Next on our list to try are the onion rings-big & seasoned with light crispy batter. The California Skillet looks incredible! The burgers & sandwiches were big & fresh looking. But then again we're always happy with breakfast foods & they have everything!

Eggs bacons and Jake cake with pancakes add on top
    Tina D.

A normal diner, but the food is good. I got the Jake's cake that had cottage cheese baked into it with ginger flavor. I also add banana as a topping. Chorimigas was delicious too! There's free parking.

This place is so intoxicating from the aqua blue color palate and funky green art work to the alluring lighting and huge metal plate (looks like something from a ship...also their logo). The standout was the Brussel sprouts...crispy with this absolutely delicious drizzle. I ordered the Mezze plate with a flavor explosion and many desirable texture. It had lamb kabobs, fresh salad (emphasis on fresh) with thinly sliced cucumbers, finely sliced onions and creamy feta (never had creamy feta), red round sweet peppers, hummus with the most delightful pesto like sauce, and olives. Oh my...what a delicious lunch! Morgan, our server, was attentive and accomodating. She moved us to another table when we notice our table was rocking a little. I got the original pancakes with a side of scrambled eggs. The pancakes came with strawberries, blueberries, bananas and syrup. The syrup was mixed with butter and it was a little too much butter which was off putting if you don't like a lot of butter. The pancakes were fluffy looking but tasted like a version of jiffy cornbread. I ate the fruit. The eggs were not scrambled really. We came here for a birthday specifically for the 100 Hour Marinated ribeye for my friend. She had been talking about it for weeks. Unfortunately, the night we came to celebrate, it was not available. She was crushed. I jokingly said "we can go somewhere else". I'm guessing the server thought I was serious because later the chef came to our table and offered her a special treat. It was very nice of them. She ended up with the Redfish special and she liked it. But it was a huge disappointment anticipating this dinner for weeks. My dinner on the other hand exceeded expectations. I had not been here for many years. I don't recall the House-made veggie burger being on the menu previously. I tried it. It was excellent. Brown rice, mushrooms, beets, jack cheese, and other goodies. The avocado basil slather was perfection. It's not easy to find a really good veggie burger these days. So many places try to make them taste like meat. This was a true old school Veggie Burger - such a treat. Our server was attentive and was really great. Drinks were good. Margarita was very tasty.

Even now as it's been Bartlett's for many years, you can still feel some of that Houston's DNA in the atmosphere and menu. The vibe lands somewhere between upscale casual and classic steakhouse. It reminded me a bit of those old-school Steak and Ale-type places. It's a step above casual dining chains like Applebee's or TGI Fridays, but I wouldn't put it in the same category as Austin's highest-end spots like Uchi. It's more of a polished, comfortable place that still feels approachable. The dining room has a warm, almost wine-cellar feel, with exposed brick and fairly low lighting. When we visited on a weeknight it was packed, so I highty recommend making a reservation. The crowd seemed to be a mix of business dinners, client meetings, and people celebrating occasions. We were there for my mom's birthday, which felt like a perfect reason to go. It's the kind of place that works well for a special dinner, a date night, or entertaining clients. Everything we ordered was excellent. The Hickory Smoked Salmon appetizer was a great start, and the French Dip and the Chimichurri Steak Sandwich were worth getting again. They also brought out a dessert for my mom's birthday that everyone at the table enjoyed. Service was friendly and professional throughout the meal.

It is a sports bar It has a million attractive wonderful aspects. It has a million pain in the neck aspects. Everything is a good news bad news joke. But the good news is pretty good. * * * I ran into the bad news right upon entering the restaurant. There was not a comfortable table to sit at anywhere in the restaurant except at the bar. Benches were so low that it was like being a four year old at the grown up table. I would have needed a telephone book to reach the table. Regular chairs don't face the TV so you have to crane your neck to see the sports. Comfortable curved sofa benches exist, but they are 500 miles from the TV. So I tried seat after seat after seat before ending up at the bar. The bar was okay. * * * The bar choices are ample and slim. There were surprisingly thin offerings on beer. There were WONDERFUL listings on bourbon and rye. I am a rye drinker, so I was in hog heaven. The tequila listings were pretty good too. Gin drinkers, scotch drinkers and vodka drinkers were just going to have to take what was available. The cocktail menu was about average. I was in a golden cloud of glory with all my choices. Angel's Envy Rye is first rate libation that is simultaneously fiercely peppery and sublimely smooth. Rough on the taste means usually means rough going down. This was BDSM with the grace of a feather. I was in love. * * * Chile con carne was a beautiful chili with brisket rather than the usual hamburger. Flavoring was superb. The brisket chunks were three times as big as you would comfortably want to put in your mouth all at once. You don't want to take a fork and knife to a bowlful of chili. So I was struggling to eat my meat all night while at the same time admiring the quality of the recipe. Cover 3 Kitchen Preppers: How much extra work is it really to cut your meat into manageablely sized pieces? * * * Garlic Mashed Potatoes had a picture of garlic walked in front of the potatoes while they were boiling. Garlic? What garlic? The handful of mouthfuls with butter were good. The rest was empty starch. * * * The human beings working the bar were fantastic. Two of the nicest and most helpful ladies working in the bartending trade. Good people count for a lot in a restaurant. * * * The sports televisions were great. Watching Duke eke out a one point win over Louisville in women's basketball was good times. * * * Then comes the dessert. Dark clouds. The brownie with three scoops of ice cream, candied pecans, and caramel sauce tasted fantastic. It was an irresistible end to a meal. But brownies should really really not be the size of a big box store. Remember from English class - "Enough! No More! Tis not so sweet now as it was before." The brownie was three to five times the size of a regular brownie - and this was before all the extra stuff was put on top of it. It was super rich and super good the way brownies are supposed to be. It was gooey the way super brownies are supposed to be. But the only human being in history who could have managed that sucker was Diamond Jim Brady, the notorious glutton of the Gilded Age. (Four T-bone steaks, two ducks, a half a dozen lobsters, three dozen oysters, two pounds of candy and an entire pastry tray were a normal dinner for him. He could go for more if there were special treats.) I went from being happy and in a good mood to being a little full, then more than full, then Jesus-Christ-I-Can't-Stand-It-Anymore. I left half of that brownie on my plate, and left Cover 3 nauseated and staggering. Not the way you want to end an otherwise fine evening. * * * Cover 3 has its definite attractions - even if you have to put up with the chairs. Bourbon and rye drinkers, take especial note. If you are going to have dessert, Bring a Sunday School bus full of second graders with you. One dessert will be enough to feed the bus.

The gravy was just barely enough to not even cover the biscuits- and it was very tasty, so we asked for more, and were billed for an additional side of gravy. Again the side of gravy that was provided and billed for, was very small. So there's room for improvement there. We enjoyed our meal but definitely would have enjoyed it more if more gravy had been used! Oh I forgot to mention that one of us ordered the stack of pancakes foster as an add on and they were good.
