The first thing I thought upon entering was that this is by far the neatest gym I have ever been to. Second, I did not have to wait at all; Coach Yajen was very punctual. Third, I realized he was serious about my well-being when he started by asking what I was hoping to get out of signing up with his gym. Then he gave me a realistic outline of what I could expect from this type of training. Once I began going to classes, I saw that the coaches really enjoy what they do. They even invite members to join them for events outside the gym (such as indoor rock-climbing, pickleball, and Spartan races) for which they have no financial incentive. The community of members is so cheerful and supportive of one another that I did not feel out of place, even on my first day. Three months in, I am surprised that I could still regain strength and conditioning so significantly at my age. But what has truly amazed me is how Yajen continues to follow up. He uses objective measures, such as body composition scans and the Level Method criteria, to report my progress to me, in writing, every 1-2 months. He sends text and email messages reminding me to show up for these measurements. He checks in with me whenever I go too long without asking him any questions. He knows my weakness (poor eating habits) and periodically nudges me with specific suggestions to improve. I had been with several fitness trainers, and even another Crossfit gym, in the distant past. I can honestly say none of them had ever shown this level of dedication and integrity.

Yajen and Brittney are both excellent trainers who go above and beyond to ensure you're not only pushing yourself to your greatest potential, but maintaining good form and optimum safety to avoid injuries. I'm new to the CrossFit world, so it was important to me that I was well prepared to begin my fitness regime with safety at the forefront and coaches who were willing to answer any questions I may have regarding lifestyle, nutrition, and how I can achieve my goals successfully while sustaining them. Yajen and his team provide that and MORE. They utilize the Level method to measure your overall strength, a pretty holistic approach that ensure your building strength in all areas of the body while improving functionality (check it out on their website for a well-detailed description). Since beginning Crossfit a little over 3 months ago, my strength--flexibility--and endurance have all increased. My squat depth has improved beyond what I expected. As someone as stiff as myself, I appreciate that Yajen and his team place functionality at the forefront and explain in great detail how each workout is performed. They definitely live out the definition of "Trust the Process". Looking forward to participating in my first Spartan Race in the upcoming months-- a goal I didn't realize I'd have this soon. Oh, and above all-- working out here is FUN, come join us and have a great time! :D

Good for the new generation of Cal Poly Pomona college staff and students to have a beautiful facility compared to what I and others tolerated back in the 80's. This facility is better than other Division 1 programs in the country, especially in the midwest region. The students who toured us around were Hospitality and Restaurant Management majors, surprised that there wasn't any collaborative agreements with Kinesiology & Health Promotion but then again, this doesn't surprise me. The HRM people, even back in my day were on top of things, progressive, and well prepared. This is a reflection of what this facility has become. I am very pleased with the results and how clean everything is. I hope outsiders will take advantage of this place vs going to a local health club or YMCA.

You'd definitely need to put in some running time before hitting this race if you want to do well. You can't rely too much on your mountain biker friend, he still needs to wait for you to get the bike back to him. Or the other way around if you are the mountain biker, friend. This race also had a starting hill, but not right away and not for a whole mile. After the first 200 meters or so, the next 1/2 mile was a climb, then a short steep descent that winds you down to the beach. Get off your bike at the sand since you'll need to carry it around a fence that extends down into the water. Hop back on and ride to the 1st obstacle, which was an over-under climb. Leg two was a gradual climb with another short but not so steep descent to obstacle 2, a wall climb. Leg three was a long climb to probably the highest point of the race, to the balance beam. But if you're a good climber on the bike, do your passing at this point. It's wide enough and most of the runners/bikers are slowing down here...but maybe so is your partner, So don't go too fast or else you'll have to wait after the next leg for him anyways. Leg 4 is the best leg..the easy downhill that takes you back out onto the paved road. Hit 30+ mph here if you can...yeah, you can. Take a nap after completing the big inflatable slide, since your partner hasn't arrived with the bike yet. Then ride the last leg with caution. This part is narrow with a short steep climb, and depending on your line, you might have to pop over roots and rocks on your way up. Then there's the final descent that's a single track with a steep and tight corner. The mud pit...always muddy, always fun. So, muddy buddy folks, Dallas in 08 huh? What about my suggestions about holding it in Tahoe, or Marin? Marin would be great. Think about it. I'll be the first to sign up...with or without a buddy.

They offer both top-rope climbing and bouldering, and both require an orientation--which I appreciated as a first-timer. I was surprised by how many people were bouldering, from novices to very experienced climbers. There's also a small gym with basic equipment. Overall, it was a fun, spontaneous activity for a random free day--kind of like bowling, but more physical and engaging. Definitely requires some strength and problem-solving. Would absolutely come back!

Well, the 30 min class turned out to be only a 5 min introduction to the rules of the rock climbing place and the only technique taught was how to fall. The instructor hastily dismissed the kids and said "Have fun". That was basically it. i thought the class would cover more bouldering techniques. I have just pulled up the class description (see pic). Had I seen this while we were there, I would've spoken to a manager about this. This is not right at all. The instructor only spent 5 min with our kids. There was only so much the girls could do on their own with that inadequate 5 minute "lesson". It could have been a fun playdate if they were given more instructions so they could've done more than climbing up 3-4 steps on just the 2 easy routes. 1 star and not likely to return. You did not deliver what was promised and wasted our time and 25 bucks each. Poor business practice. Thumbs down.
