One of the best hidden secrets in LA county is this beautiful local trail that gives you breathtaking views of the San Gabriel mountains, Mt Baldy and an expansive panoramic view of the San Gabriel Valley. This trail is not too steep and very well maintained. It is mostly exposed so definitely wear lots of sunblock and a hat.

I absolutely love this trail! The view you get to see is so beautiful and rewarding. Expect to see lots of nature and wildlife. The trail does pass through a residential area, main streets, and along the back of people's houses. However, it doesn't interfere with your venture. ---------------------------------------------------- Recommended activities: Hiking, Running, Biking, Dog Walking, Birdwatching, Walking Parking space: Plenty of parking Parking options: Free street parking Parking: The trail forms a large loop, allowing you to park your car at various points and start your hike. Dog-friendliness: This trail is great for hiking with your dog. There were many dogs on the trail, but it's important to note that it can be a little challenging. Make sure to bring some water for your pup.

Enjoyed this lovely trail during one of my recent trips to Walnut to visit family. The trail was easy- moderately difficult as it has many inclines but the views were amazing! There were picturesque backdrops and lots of nature / wildlife to take photos of. We wound up going through the three oaks neighborhood on our way back and it made for some lovely sightseeing. We were even able to get some views of downtown LA since it was a clear day. Would hike this trail again for sure!

Seeking out new areas to walk and hike and this was quite a beautiful trail. I still dont know where it starts as I ended up parking somewhere near the 22.25 mile marker. The direction I was walking was very much uphill but you are rewarded with some beautiful views. Bring some water and take your time! Other people's comments on wildlife are correct. I turned off my podcast to listen to some of the birds. Since the trail is pretty empty you end up startling some of the wildlife so definitely came upon lizards scrambling away and rabbits bounding off, squirrels gnawing on things and scrambling up to keep an eye on us hikers. Definitely wear sunblock, hat, sun protective clothing. Other reviewers are correct that not many areas have shade.

This is another review for this hiking trail. It's nestled in a town called Walnut and on top of the canyon. Bring a hat.

This listing is misleading. It isn't a park, but a trail system that spans 24 plus miles. Next to the park, there's a trail the leads up or to the side. It connects to other trails. This particular one can go 8 miles . Park on top of country willow rd, you'll see a yellow gate, large water service tank facility and trails can start here. Safe, clean friendly people, for walks jogs runs and biking. Trails can be challenging.

I love to hike and discovered this gem. Make sure to hike during cloudy days because the heat can get to you with this hike in the beginning. Steep in the beginning but it gets easier with a great view. This was my 2nd time and will come back again.

Trail begins on Amar, next to the sidewalk!

Difficulty: Moderate Distance: About 3.5 miles Highlights: A mysteriously wrecked car along the trail, scenic views Park for free at Walnut Ranch Park and take a short walk heading west on Amar to find the entrance to this hidden gem. There is a conspicuous sign that marks the start so you can't miss it. While the first half of the hike is a good workout that is filled with uphill switchbacks through dry brush, the latter part is mostly flat and/or downhill that takes you through what seems to be the big backyard of a residential community. Make sure to wear sunscreen because there is very little shade along the entire trail. There are a few overlooks near the latter part that provide nice views of surrounding cities. The best thing about this hike - you'll find more peace and quiet here than at hikes such as Cahuenga Peak. One more thing, how did that Chrysler LeBaron end up at the bottom of the ravine?!

The entrance is about 0.25 mile from the parking lot along Amar Road. Following the route suggested by https://nobodyhikesinla.com/2011/04/16/schabarumlemon-avenue-loop-walnut, we started the loop by veering right to tackle the climb first. There were a bit of switchbacks going up, but the inclines were not difficult. Once we arrived to the top, we saw a view of the city and then proceeded on to the well-maintained paths back to the trailhead. Well-marked, this trail reminded me parts of Aliso Summit and Crystal Cove where you are strolling next to luxury homes. DISTANCE: about 3-4 miles, less than 2 hours to complete. DIFFICULTY: easy, with some runners and bikers PARKING: free in the small lot by Walnut Ranch Park or at Westhoff Elementary School

Nice, easy trail with first half uphill, and the later half downhill or flat if you head from the Trailhead up. I am curious about an older wrecked car a short distance off the trail in the woods at the bottom of the very tall hill we climb. The only nearby road is in the new subdivision far above, unless part of the trail not as far up served as a road or a path it found itself on what appears to have been a sad, fateful day. Some quiet residential walking beginning the 2nd half to near the end. A couple of lookouts along the way, each with a bench or two and a picnic table for a peaceful lunch break. Enjoy!

For this two year pandemic couch Potatoe this was a GREAT trail. It has a clean dirt path with an easy to walk up and down trail. The view of Covina/ West Covina is spectacular. It is Dog Friendly..

Schabarum trail entrance sign. You can take the left or the right path from here. The right path is less steep, the left path takes longer.

Walked the trail twice, its a really good trail and you can walk down from the top of the houses in order to circle back to Westoff if you parked there and walked. Both trails lead to the same top part and make sure you wear hat, sunglasses, good walking shoes, and bring a water. Decent hikers should take about an hour if you only do half the trail then two hours if you do the full trail, including up and down the hill.

Miles: 1.5 - 2 miles round trip Scenic: nothing but residential and a creepy rusted car in the middle of the canyon Level: easy-going. A few switchbacks to run for the people that want a challenge Time to go: Early morning

Ask the Community - Schabarum Trail

Where's the entrance to this trail? I've gone through Schabarum park-Colima park entrance and seems to cut off at one point?

    Is it dog friendly?

Yes, lots of people walk their dogs on the trail, always on a leash though.

There is a round about parking near the entrance with a moderate amount of parking spaces but if you go past that further in there are more parking available. The play ground is quite large compared to other smaller park playgrounds. The cool think i like was that stairs from the first parking lot with the restrooms connect to the playground. So kids can jump right into the fun. Next to the playground its surrounded with plenty of picnic tables (concrete) and lets parents sit and relax while the kids play. The playground has multiple entries with two slides? Two monkey bars, stepping stone style elevated steps, a fireman pole, etc... definitely a fun park to come to. There is a little creek adjacent to the playground where you get a nice tranquil stream of flowing water drowned by the screams and laughter of children in the background, lol.. its nice really and something that sets it apart. We did not go further past the stream but there appears to be additional tables and a trail. Had a great time meeting our friends there and enjoying some fun times with the kids in the process. My kids loved it.

New Playground for the kids!…read more I like how the playground has two areas for different ages and the city used padding for the ground under the play areas because sand is messy and wood chips get everywhere. We've been here twice in the last couple of months and my kids love it. (The city is updating the baseball/softball fields next to the playground). Parking could have a larger lot, but when the lot is full, there's plenty of street parking. And the playground has bathrooms right next to it. I hate when playgrounds/parks don't have bathrooms because kids always need to go when there's not a bathroom around. Very inconvenient when there's no bathroom. Cheers! Please see my photos. They added a new playground area bunch of new playground toys and just seems a lot more fun for the kids compared to the previous arrangement. The Park and play area appears to be larger than it was before which is a plus the old playground was kind of outdated, but this new one has a lot of fun activities for kids. It was very spacious very kid and toddler friendly. They also have a picnic area for people to rent space to have birthday parties and other celebratory events. There's some lighting in the playground area so even after hours you could still play for a little bit they are doing construction near the baseball field. Parking was pretty accessible led right to the park. There's a good amount of parking and then also you could probably park in the neighborhood nearby if there is no space but I never had an issue since I've been there the last two times highly recommend checking out this park and my daughter loves to come and play here.

It's the perfect quick escape -- close enough…read moreto civilization for convenience, yet far enough to leave the hustle and bustle of traffic and city life behind. Right now the cherry blossoms are in full, breathtaking bloom, turning parts of the park into a dreamy pink wonderland. The wildlife is thriving too: squirrels galore that are so bold they'll walk right up to your feet if you sit still and stay calm. On warmer days I've spotted rattlesnakes scurrying across the trails, so I always recommend staying in the middle of the paths as a safety precaution. From the main entrance at Colima Road, you can choose the paved walkway or head straight for the dirt trails depending on your mood. I usually make my way toward the horse stables and equestrian area -- watching the horses get fed or running around their enclosures is one of my favorite parts. Just be mindful of the occasional big mounds of horse droppings on the trails; it's a small price to pay for the beauty. The park is generally very clean, with plenty of trash cans scattered throughout. There are numerous benches, picnic areas, fire pits perfect for groups, a children's playground, and even a seasonal creek with several charming wooden bridges crossing directly over it (though the water is pretty dry now that the rainy season is over). You'll also notice signs posted along the trails warning about bobcats and mountain lions. I've been coming here regularly for six months and haven't heard or seen any myself, but I've seen quite a few hikers carrying pepper spray as a precaution. Just be safe out there. Weekends get busy with families celebrating birthdays and enjoying the outdoors, but it's all part of the lively atmosphere. For dog lovers, there are two fantastic off-leash dog parks right near the front entrance -- one for large dogs and one for medium/small dogs. Outside of those areas, dogs must be on leash per the signs. The hilltop trails offer absolutely stunning panoramic views that make every visit worthwhile. My only heads-up: the park is officially closed on Mondays and Tuesdays (per LA County rules), but a lot of locals park across the street at the nearby mall and walk in through the gates anyway. If you're in the Rowland Heights/Hacienda Heights area and looking for a beautiful regional park with trails, nature, horses, cherry blossoms, and those lovely wooden bridges over the creek, I highly recommend Schabarum. Just bring water, wear good shoes, keep an eye out for those snakes in the summer, and stay aware on the trails! 5/5 -- I'll definitely be back soon.

Park amenities are minimal, but you can find multiple restrooms with water fountains and picnic tables to sit. When I went, there wasn't a big crowd, and the green space is already expansive. When the weather isn't hot, it's calming to take a walk along the paths and grass to visit different areas of the park.
