Today is my birthday, and it is a day that I will remember for its infamy for quite some time to come! I would like to start out by saying that my family and I decided to make a long trek from Brooklyn to Edgewater, NJ to enjoy Arigato's all-you-can-eat option, one that is currently not available in NYC due to a continued halt on indoor dining. The last time I visited Arigato was for Father's Day over three years ago and recalled the food being excellent. We battled traffic for over two hours in order to have our first taste of sushi since Covid-19 struck. As a side note, I would like to mention that I am on a low-carb ketogenic diet and do not eat rice. The same is the case for my diabetic father. I had called this morning to make reservations to verify that the Arigato Roll (rice-less and wrapped in cucumber) was included on the AYCE menu, as it would be the ONLY roll my father and I would order. Once we got seated in what used to be the parking area pre-Covid, we asked for four miso soups right off the bat. To our disappointment, we were told that all hot soups were taken off the menu. We then asked for four teas and were told that they no longer served hot teas either. We then asked if the price was still the same, at $28 per person, and were told indeed it was. We asked for four bottled waters (they weren't serving tap) and began ordering rolls and appetizers. My father and I put down twenty Arigato rolls - ten for him and ten for me. We had intended for that to be our one and only order, as everything else was loaded with carbs. To our continued amazement, the waiter approached us and told us that the maximum order for any one table for Arigato rolls was ten. I tried to reason with him by stating that I was never told there was a limit on any rolls over the phone, that my father and I couldn't eat anything else, and that It was my birthday and it took over two hours to get there. I was visibly pissed off at this point, although I didn't mean to come off as rude. The waiter leaves and grabs the chef, an older Korean man with poorer English. He tells me, "Let's talk" and insists I follow him to the side entrance, next to the kitchen, where he accuses me of talking down to his waitstaff. I genuinely thought he had wanted to have constructive dialogue with me in order to resolve the ongoing issue, but as it turned out, he called me to the back in order to assault me! An older woman, who was a waitress herself, whom I believe could be his wife, held him back for nearly five minutes as he REPEATEDLY tried to lunge at me. The woman told him to go inside and stay put, but every time I tried to have dialogue with her, he would burst out again screaming and cursing at me! The unrelenting chef stated it's his place and that we should just leave or that he would hurt me. "THIS IS MY F**KING PLACE. GET THE F* OUT!" I have never seen such a brazen display of aggression from any restaurant staff in my entire life! Totally baffled at this point, I stated out loud how rude and unprofessional ALL of this was, and how I cannot believe that the chef actually wants to hit me! I finally agreed to the ten Arigato roll limit, only to be told by the lady that she can do only FIVE due to a large order that was JUST placed and there is a cucumber shortage. My jaw dropped to the floor, and again I tried to reason with words. Mind you, this entire spectacle took place in front of all the seated patrons, along with my family. Ultimately, we were intimidated and kicked out. Arigato and its staff should be ashamed of themselves. What happened tonight was horrifying!
UPDATE: This establishment has since launched a campaign both on here and on Yelp to mock, gaslight and silence me by having people associated with the establishment post reviews as if they were patrons from last night. These reviews come just hours after mine and mostly from profiles with no previous reviews. ALL FAKE! Stop embarrassing yourselves.
EDIT: A Yelp user by the name of Grace C. just left a review trying to rebut what I had written last night about my experience, falsely claiming to be a patron and falsely claiming I was throwing a tantrum and I am now playing the victim. The truth, however, is that the chef/owner was the one that called me out back and repeatedly lunged at me, literally threatening me with violence. Grace is no patron, but in fact, someone that is connected to this establishment. Instead of apologizing for being rude, disrespectful, and using intimidation and threats of violence, your establishment decided to use a Yelp account with no prior reviews to silence me by attempting to mock and gaslight me into submission. Guess what? It ain't happening! If anyone doubts the veracity of my claims, read all the other 1-star reviews that are buried among the others and I'm sure you'll find a pattern of mistreatment!
And remember, Section 5 of the FTC Act 15 U.S. Code § 45 makes fake testimonials illegal! Keep going and this will become a libel case. read more
