SO and I had lunch here again. We both had the Miyabi lunches. Happy to say that they are maintaining status quo with quality and service.

We got a reservation for Yasaka for dinner, and had a good time. When we got there, we had to wait for a few minutes for a table to open up before seating. Indoor had lots of tables with moody lighting. I think the food is okay, the fish quality was fine but for the price, I expected better? Or a bit more? It just didn't wow me as much as other sushi spots in NYC.

spicy salmon roll and Spicy Yellowtail Roll #81

Incredible sushi at a great price point! Stopped by with a reservation, and thank goodness made one because it would have been too busy without. We did still have to wait, but they were super nice and it was a busy Friday so totally understand. The place is kinda small, but it never felt cramped actually because they had great table dividers. The tempura udon was good but not standout. The fish though, so good. Basic order and got spicy salmon and yellowtail, both fantastic. The salmon sashimi though was stellar - easily some of the best i've had in NYC at a very reasonable price. Definitely worth a try for some fresh and delicious ala carte sushi!!

Lunch special

My kids love this place because the special with 4 nigiri, 6 sashimi, 1 roll and soup or salad costs only $20. Plus the quality of the fish is high and they're fast. They also take reservations, so we got our group of 6 in for Easter lunch between church and 2 matinees.

Good sushi for a great price! When I saw the prices on the menu for some of the combos I was expecting the sushi to be pretty small or mediocre, but neither was the case. This spot blew away any expectations I had for a casual sushi spot. I ordered the Miyabi sushi entree which came with 6 pieces of nigiri, 12 pieces of sashimi (menu siad 10, but I got 12), and a roll - I went with the salmon avocado roll. Everything was really good, but after a big day of eating it was so much food. I ended up giving multiple pieces of sashimi to my boyfriend who had opted for the Mini Omakase. When comparing the regular sushi with the Omakase, it was clear the Omakase was higher quality and more thoughtful, but the regular sushi was still very good. I also got the miso soup, and was surprised to see a few different miso soups on the menu, including a special one with clams. Had a later reservation here and was shocked by how packed the place was. Looked like every table was taken and people were waiting, so good idea to make a reservation to skip the wait.

YUM!!! It's mostly maki from what I saw but the rice was incredible - soft and flavorful and the rolls all hit the spot. Couldn't get r enough! Highlights were the spicy yellowtail roll, creamy blue crab california roll, and toro tartare. We got the two milky sake bottles and they were delicious. Good service as well.

I have been here several times and I am happy each time. They're easily able to accommodate allergies and food preferences (e.g. I don't eat shellfish), even for the omakase offerings. The fish is fresh and the service is solid. It's nice-casual and always full (for good reason)!

Good, affordable Japanese food can be surprisingly hard to find in New York--so many places are either very expensive or strictly omakase. Sushi Yasaka was a refreshing change. It's a true mom-and-pop spot with great lunch deals and consistently solid quality. It's clearly a neighborhood staple: the restaurant was packed and super lively! I'd definitely recommend making a reservation if you can, though I was able to snag one the morning of for lunch without much trouble. If I lived closer, this would easily be a regular go-to for me.

Miyabi lunch (special)

Always love coming to Sushi Yasaka. They're really busy so definitely make sure to have a reservation (usually it's not too hard to book in advance for lunch, which are the best times to come anyway). I really appreciate that they also offer their lunch special options on weekends, too, so corporate slaves like me can still try their cheap and delicious lunch sets :) I usually order the miyabi lunch with a side of salad. The fish is always so amazingly fresh and high-quality, and it's a perfect portion size and mix of pieces of sushi, sashimi, and rolls. The salad is a nice starter but not particularly unique as such. It's always a difficult choice between the miyabi lunch and the chirashi lunch, which I think looks similarly yummy, too. Will definitely want to come back and try more of their delicious lunch specials :)

I got the Miyabi dinner and for only $39 the amount of sashimi, nigiri, and sushi I got is incomparable to other places. The salmon was melt in your mouth fresh and the tuna was also great. Honestly didn't know what all the white fishes were but they were great too. The sushi was ready about 15 mins faster than expected so it was quick! I'll definitely be ordering from here again

I came for sushi and left with a masterclass in how not to serve customers. I really wanted to love Sushi Yasaka, but my visit was let down by one server, Lucas, whose inattentive service and dismissive attitude overshadowed what could have been a great meal. Despite being seated earlier, my table received food well after others, and my water glass went unfilled while I watched him regularly refill neighboring tables. The busboy was far more attentive; I even tipped him separately in appreciation. The main issue arose with my tempura appetizer: the shrimp had an off taste, and some pieces were not de-veined. When I asked about it, Lucas insisted that "the kitchen leaves veins in" and seemed unfamiliar with what I was referring to. At no point did he apologize or offer to address the concern, he simply repeated that "that's how it's served." Another server later confirmed the issue, apologized immediately, and offered to remove the item from the bill. Her professionalism stood in stark contrast to Lucas's handling of the situation and helped salvage part of my experience. The food and most of the team impressed me, but service gaps like this make me think twice about returning.

Connective tissue in yellowtail
Asma A.

I can see why this place would be solid for takeout. The prices are affordable and most of the fish is not fishy. However, I did not have a nice experience here. The spot seems to be very very casual (the host was wearing an oversized hoodie), despite the seating feeling a bit more fancy. I was hoping with the number of reviews, this would be one of those lowkey places that is secretly amazing. However, the rolls we got were extremely poorly made. The ones with seaweed in the outside were not fully wrapped. The fish filling was not placed evenly. The ingredients were not evenly distributed (got some yellowtail jalapeno without any jalapeno). Lastly, the yellowtail did have a lot of connective tissue that was not cut out. I know that can happen, but it did seem like the chefs here are not very meticulous. To be fair, it seems like they deal with a high volume of takeout which is probably why dine-in suffers, but this was truly below average. The quality of fish is good. If I lived in the area, I might order takeout. It is not exceptional but it is certainly good. The miso soup was really good. The service is above average.

Sushi Yasaka delivers consistently fresh and perfectly crafted sushi that keeps you coming back. Food (5/5) - Exceptional freshness and precision in every piece, with standout nigiri and well-balanced rolls. Value (5/5) - Top-tier quality at prices far below what you'd expect for sushi of this caliber. Service (5/5) - Attentive and quick.

Sushi Yasaka Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Sushi Yasaka

Is there music / are there speakers in the restaurant? Couldn't see any in the interior photos.

The restaurant has low volume background music. It's not loud and conversations are easily heard.

Can you eat at the sushi bar?

There are only tables at the restaurant, no bar for seating

Is there outdoor seating?

No. But we were there in the winter.

How do you make a reservation?

I've made them through OpenTable.com- if you go to yasaka's website, you can locate it there too.

So they have lunch specials?

Yes ! For the sushi option, I usually order the Miyabi lunch special. For non-sushi, I usually order the King Salmon or Chicken Teriyaki. IMO the king salmon is better than chicken.

Is it BYOB or do they have a bar?

They have a bar. I had a glass of wine with lunch.

Do they use imitation crab in their California roll?

Yes. But they also have a real crab one. I tried both and they are good!!

Do they take walk ins?

They do, but the times I've been there (for weekday dinner), they have been so busy that it is almost impossible to actually walk in. You would still probably have to wait. Highly recommended to make a reservation if you can!

Is there a wine list? If so, what kind of Pinot noir do you carry?

Yes, they do have a wine list. Not sure about the second question though, as I do not usually drink Pinot noir...

I notice theres a change in your new menu online but i no longer find the sushi rice on your menu, does it mean that the sushi rice is not for delivery?…

I recently ordered food and I saw that they have sushi rice. It's all the way on the bottom.

How does Omakase work? Do you set your price and they go based off of that?

$50 for 12 and then a la carte for any addition pieces. Trust the chef! And sit at the bar for experience.

We got the fish carpaccio to start and it was pretty good! It tasted like what I expected from the description. The miso soup was also good, not too salty and slightly different than your trusty takeout sushi spot. I got the dashi omelette and it was a little sweet and savory. It paired nicely with the radish. I got the cold, plum udon. Which was refreshing and a bit sour from the plums. The broth was sippable since it wasn't too salty. My friend got the mushroom cold soba and it came with mashed yam. This dish tasted more like what I was expecting since the sourness of my dish kinda was unexpected, but I still enjoyed it! My friend also got a drink and it was SO strong. I think they're serious about their drinks here I didn't see any mocktails or cocktails. They gave us black sesame ice cream on the house since her drinks came out later than expected, which was really nice! I'm not a black sesame fan, but this place's ice cream was good! You're able to chew on the black sesame's bits and pieces in there. Overall, I do think they nail Japanese food, it's supposed to be simple and clean. So if you're looking for creative and big umami flavors, that's not going to be this place. But if you want authentic, Japanese food, this is the place!

The décor features light natural wood and bamboo, creating a warm, authentic atmosphere, with an impressive collection of sake lining the wall. The food is outstanding. The must-order Wagyu beef, served on a hot stone, simply melted in our mouths and was unforgettable. Every dish was beautifully prepared, and I enjoyed every single bite. The impeccable service was the icing on the cake. The staff was attentive throughout our meal, making sure we had everything we needed without ever being intrusive. I absolutely loved the entire dining experience and can't wait to come back again!

Cuisine: 7 Service: 6…read moreDecor: 7 Value: 4 Overall: 6 I am mixed about my feelings toward this restaurant. After two visits, I have enjoyed certain items, but also disappointed by others. The inconsistency in their quality leaves me a bit unsure. On top of that, their prices are relatively high. I have easily spent over $120 each visit (two people each time) without having a full meal. The items I enjoyed the most were the Oyster Emerald (8/10) for $28 and Kama Yaki Hamachi (8/10) for $23. Both are quite expensive compared to other izakaya restaurants I frequent. The Yammy Uzura (7.5/10) was very good as well. On the mediocre side, the Hamachi Carpaccio (7/10) lacked the flavors I expected. Also, most of the Sushi Spoon (6/10) I have tried are underwhelming. Quality of the rice is inferior to what I am accustomed to and definitely not worth the price. The Hokkaido Uni was $18 for that one small bite. On the negative side, their tiny portion of Fried Chicken Nanban (6/10) was nothing special and costs $21. Furthermore, the few Yakitori (5/10) skewers I have tried were somewhat dry and lacked flavor. In addition, I am really not a fan of their Agedashi Tofu (3/10), which has a goopy and slimy texture that felt off putting. Ultimately, I find some of the food here good enough to come back for, but not at these prices. Both times I left felt like I overpaid. Therefore, I don't see myself returning to this izakaya.

The portion size for this (and in general) is not particularly large, but still fine. The restaurant interior is quite narrow, which leads to a lively atmosphere that can get a bit noisy at times, though not too bad.
