As a new attorney back in the day, I took a lot of suits to Dominico...and although he was definitely more expensive than your average dry cleaners alterations lady (usually ladies), his work was SPECTACULAR. Seriously. The first item I took him was a wool gabardine coat (Perry Ellis--vintage)...with shoulders way too big. (Got it at a charity shop...for about $30 in the city.,.) He made that coat look like a million bucks. Also, did a bunch of alterations on more expensive, but off-the-rack wool/cashmere suits. Again--perfect fit. Once I took him a 100%, tailored suit I got at TARGET...I loved the lines, and he made it look like an Armani suit. He said it had good bones--otherwise he'd tell me that it "wasn't worth it." I have used Nelson a few times. I think Nelson might have worked with Dominico Spoleti (like as an apprentice). Anyway--Nelson has the same skill set...and most importantly, the SAME DEDICATION to QUALITY, custom tailoring He knows what he is doing. You are not going to necessarily get your clothes back the next day..but if you bring in an expensive suit or piece or dress--and explain, he will tailor it beautifully. TOP QUALITY REAL TAILOR--not your run-of-mill alterations shop at a dry cleaners. And--yes, they are more expensive..but WORTH IT if you have a quality piece of clothing. Two months later, I returned to have two more pairs tailored, and this time he charged $30 per pair. I mentioned that two months ago the price was $20, not $30. He responded, "Okay, then don't be my guest," and rudely told me to leave. I was just trying to understand why the prices went up and he basically kick me out of his store. I love this place but a few pointers for new people…read more 1) If you cannot deal with old world/old school attitude this might not be the place for you. They are blunt. I have been in there when people are told what they do not want to hear and complain the customer service is bad. They are just really blunt. 2) This kind of bleeds into the first point but the unfortunate reality is just because you spent a lot of money on a dress/clothing it does not make it quality. We want to think that as a consumer but at the end of the day a lot of bridesmaid dresses/ dresses from department stores for weddings are made super cheap and they let you know it because the quality of the garment is what gives them space to work. 3) It looks kind of messy in there and you NEED TO KEEP YOUR TICKET. A lot of us are used to modern computers but they are not functioning like that, this is a local, elder owned business. This is legitimately like going to a business in 1965, it has charm but you need to sort of feed into that and do it their way. 4) Give them time. The modern world is rush rush rush, but like I said this place is old school. I have personally bought multiple dresses here, some cheap, some very expensive. I never had a problem with the fit or service. This is not to say they are perfect but I think if you want a no frills alteration process I love them. Plus, Yvonne is hilarious if that's your humor.

Unfortunately, my experience this time was completely different. I brought in a simple double layered dress that only needed to be hemmed and was quoted $140, more than the dress itself! I was told that because it had two layers, it was essentially like "hemming two dresses." At $70 a layer, I guess every layer counts. I then asked about simply taking in the waist of a pair of jeans. I was initially quoted $25, but after looking at them again, I was told there was suddenly "a lot more work" involved and that I had been quoted incorrectly. At that point, I took both items and left. I went to another alterations shop and was quoted under $100 for BOTH the dress and the jeans. It seems management may have changed since my last visit, which is unfortunate because I was previously very happy with their work. Hopefully the pricing doesn't continue in this direction, because $140 to hem a simple dress is pretty hard to justify.

Historically, I was charged around $85-$100 for this type of alteration, so I was extremely surprised by my experience today. I also want to mention that I have always loved the tailor here. She is incredibly precise, detailed, and fair priced. I have always been happy with her work, and she is a big reason I continued coming back over the years. The tailor I have always used was still working here, but it appears the business is now under new management. I was quoted $180 to hem a double-lined dress and $210 for a dress with three layers. That is an enormous increase from what I have paid for essentially the same service over the years. I politely declined and took my dresses to another dry cleaner up the street (still in Hoboken). They charged me $85 for the double-lined dress and $125 for the three-layer dress - which was much more in line with what I have historically paid. I completely understand that prices increase and that businesses have to adjust their pricing, but these prices felt excessive, especially given my long history as a customer and the fact that I was able to get the exact same alterations done elsewhere for significantly less. Very disappointing to see such a drastic change at a place I had trusted for years. I will not be coming back.
