Had several pairs of pants altered here for fit. The results were a bit too tight in the rear, with fabric "creeping up" from behind in an unpleasant and unsightly way. They also stapled tags to my clothing, which is not a good way to treat delicate fabrics. I accepted the pants at the store because the flaws didn't really bother me until I had to wear the pants for a day. It wasn't a good value, given the uncomfortable result. read more

I considered rating with 4 stars or 5, because of the quality of my past hemming services. Unfortunately, I want to share about some things to keep in mind so I decided as 3. Quality of hemming, sawing: Fantastic. I brought over a wedding dress with lace material and cloths attached underneath that seemed difficult for anyone to hem, but this place gives satisfying results. I also brought pants to hem a few other times. Those results were great, too. Quality of customer service: 1. Could be low depends on how busy this place gets. Seems like there is one person handling everything at once. If there are capacity limits, the store needs to make a rule such as , "During our busy time, we can only help x(# of items) at that time due to limited numbers of staff availability." I came in to pick up my hemmed item yesterday, and there was one gentleman getting helped to be hemmed for multiple jackets and pants. I was next to use the dressing room. Meanwhile, there were 2 customers casually stopped by to drop off their stuff to be fixed. The gentleman took enormous amount of time. The lady who came in later then me left. Another lady who came after me seemed like she was ok to wait but that was like 30-40 min. The gentleman kept trying on about at least 4 or 5 items and of course, it was his turn so he seems not caring how much time he was spending at the fitting room. 2. During their busy time, they might respond to customers who asks questions in a sloppy manner. If you want to get advice or help from this tailor, you may want to come back another time when it is not busy. 3. Miscommunication inside the store between staffs: The dress I dropped off supposed to be done about a week later. But towards the end of the week, they noticed and called me that nothing was done. The staff explained to me that one of the team was stupid so the markers marked on the edge of the dress smeared off so it needs to be done again (by me trying on). I only cared if the service was done on the date as we promised, but the whole explanation about other staff being sloppy was unnecessary. Very unprofessional. read more

Wonderful tailor in a super convenient location! I dropped off some minor repairs I needed done and they were able to fix a vintage silk shirt I had that most people were unsure I'd be able to fix. The stitching is very well done and you wouldn't even notice that it was a repair. Will be coming back for more alterations! read more

I had a dress that never got a lot of wear even though it was beautiful because it looked too much like lingerie (even though that was the whole point of the dress). I decided that I wanted to turn it into a top so I could wear it more often. I had a vision of adding belt loops and side slits and Franco and I communicated very thoroughly to make sure I got want I needed. I said I wanted to wear this for my birthday over the weekend, and he actually finished the job on the same day I came in just to make sure I had what I wanted. Hemming the dress, adding side slits, and making belt loops came up to around $68. I'm very nitpicky about how I like my clothes to fit, and I'm glad Franco has the same eye for detail that I do. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!! I had passed it by for years & I never had much clothing to be tailored.... When I had a pair of new business pants that I never wore in couple of years, I forgot the bottom was alittle long & would make me trip over, even in shoes! So I went here Friday morning to drop them off for a tailoring & needed them by Monday morning for a interview that afternoon! Mateo was the sweetest person who greeted me, introduced himself with handshaking my hand & told me step by step what to do, how to pose, what his recommendation was & so forth! I never felt so comfortable before!!! ! It's tiny but it's very almighty!!! Monday morning came & he greeted me with my first name (which I was surprised he remembered because it's very hard to remember for most people lol) so that made me feel very special and welcomed! WOMEN: DO NOT SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS. I called ahead on a Sat morning to ask if they were busy. The guy asked what I had, I said "three dresses to be altered," and he said to grab my shoes and come by. I got there 40 mins later, there were no other customers in the shop, just were 3 men on sewing machines. The guy I had spoken to asked me to see the dresses and then said he they were too complicated / the work was too hard. He said he didn't have enough staff to take on anymore projects. He didn't even look at the dresses while saying this. I reminded him we had just spoken on the the phone and that he had invited me to come by. He shrugged and suggested I go to Gramercy Park to get the work done. ?!?!?! As he was sending me away, despite the shop being empty, a man walks in with a suit repair. They greet the man warmly, and get to work on his order right away. I have never seen such open misogyny on display and I am SHOCKED to see positive reviews for this shop here. I am not sure if it was Franco I was dealing with, or if he was out of town, however, if you need a tailor in the neighborhood who won't make you feel small for being a woman, I'd highly recommend the Atelier on 7th St. East Side was an unprofessional, belittling waste of time. This is the most I have ever paid for tailoring but I have to say it was worth it. I am a small person and I have to get most of my clothing tailored. I was on the look for a good tailor for a couple of months and I found East Side Tailor. They were very professional and attentive to how I wanted my clothing tailored. Very fast and efficient, dropped my clothes on Tuesday and were ready by Saturday and this was me telling them I was in no rush. For the amount of reconstruction that has to happen for my clothes, I give them a 11/10 for the job. It is perfect, is looks like I bought it that way. read more

I cannot recommend this place enough! I called a bit before 7pm (the time they close) to make sure I could drop off 2 jackets I wanted altered. The owner told me to come on in. When I arrived he looked at my jackets and proceeded to alter them right away. After 45 minutes my jackets were done and I was very happy with the result! My request was not a difficult one; however, for the owner to stay past closing to accommodate me was very unexpected and a character of how committed this tailor is to his profession. The work they did for me is 5 star. There was one item they declined to handle, so if I could give half stars, I'd give 4.5 stars, docking a half star for that. I had a winter coat with hidden buttons under a placket . The edge of the panel with the button holes in it was piped, and over time, some of the covering for the piping wore through, so the white inner cord showed. I brought in the coat, hoping that there was a way to recover the piped edge. Mateo gave me an estimate of $35 and within days, the work was done, and it was SO well done that you'd have no idea, even looking closely, that there had ever been an issue. On the other hand, I also brought in a beautiful coat that had been my mother's but that was too big for me. It was a squared off shape, with bulky sleeves and an odd dropped shoulder, like a dolman sleeve but with a seam a couple inches down the arm. Mateo didn't think it could be altered down to fit me better because of the design of the sleeves. Franco (the master tailor) was in the hospital at the time, but was due out relatively soon, so I left the coat there so that he could look at it and see whether the tailoring could be done. Ultimately, Mateo told me that Franco had looked at it once he was back at work and decided that it could not be altered to fit me. Franco never saw it on me. On my way home with the coat that day, I stopped at another tailoring store, just to see what could be done. This past Sunday, I picked up the altered coat at the second store (not East Side Tailor), and I'm very happy with the alteration and will be able to wear the coat. So even though East Side Tailor said it couldn't be done, that turned out to be incorrect. read more

East Side Tailor did a FANTASTIC job on a couple of dresses I needed for a wedding. One was a double layer hem, the other was one of those flowing, silky dresses that can be tough to take in and make a shape. They did a great job on both, and cannot recommend them enough! I'll post pictures with an updated review once I wear them. I will say this: don't go in for a rush job. It is an extremely small workspace, with very few people, and on both drop off and pick up there were quite a few people waiting to get inside. I'd say plan a couple weeks in advance to be on the safe side! The owner is super responsive on Yelp though, so it never hurts to reach out here to get a quote and a timing estimate. This review is long overdue -- I was a bridesmaid last November and needed my dress tailored because it was so long. They finished the job early, and the new length was PERFECT (without messing up any of the layers). As reference, the dress cost $95 to get tailored because it had three layers. Highly recommend this place. I brought in 5 blazers (sleeves shortened, sides/backs taken in) and a pair of pants (taper/shorten) on my first visit, and Franco had them done in less than two weeks. He did such a great job that they now look like they're custom made (seriously, I couldn't believe it). I just went back a second time to get 4 pairs of pants tapered/shortened and a hole fixed in another pair. They were done in a week and they look fantastic. To top it off, Franco is a very nice, personable guy who really knows his stuff and finds solutions when you need them. They do a great job but I've blocked off time on my calendar twice this week to walk over and get my jeans tailored and both times the tailor hasn't been there. I'd recommend calling ahead to confirm he's there before you spend time traveling over only be to told you come back another time. My first encounter with Franco was at another tailor shop. I was very pleased he opened his own shop. A much closer location for me being that I live in the 20's of the east side. I have worked with Mateo on 1 or 2 occasions. Very helpful and detailed oriented. Franco always goes out of his to help service me. He even picked up my alterations from a competing vendor so that he may complete service for me. My clothes are always tailored correct and never a complaint. Franco is wonderful. He added two "darts" to remove the excess fabric from my new wool vest. First, he pinned the darts from just below the armpit down to the waist to show me what it would like like. I gave him the OK. He chalked my vest and ran it through the sewing machine.
