The first time I came in, the tailor was very friendly and treated me with respect. He charged me $20 to tailor each pair of pants--I had three in total. Two months later, I returned to have two more pairs tailored, and this time he charged $30 per pair. I mentioned that two months ago the price was $20, not $30. He responded, "Okay, then don't be my guest," and rudely told me to leave. I was just trying to understand why the prices went up and he basically kick me out of his store. I love this place but a few pointers for new people. 1) If you cannot deal with old world/old school attitude this might not be the place for you. They are blunt. I have been in there when people are told what they do not want to hear and complain the customer service is bad. They are just really blunt. 2) This kind of bleeds into the first point but the unfortunate reality is just because you spent a lot of money on a dress/clothing it does not make it quality. We want to think that as a consumer but at the end of the day a lot of bridesmaid dresses/ dresses from department stores for weddings are made super cheap and they let you know it because the quality of the garment is what gives them space to work. 3) It looks kind of messy in there and you NEED TO KEEP YOUR TICKET. A lot of us are used to modern computers but they are not functioning like that, this is a local, elder owned business. This is legitimately like going to a business in 1965, it has charm but you need to sort of feed into that and do it their way. 4) Give them time. The modern world is rush rush rush, but like I said this place is old school. I have personally bought multiple dresses here, some cheap, some very expensive. I never had a problem with the fit or service. This is not to say they are perfect but I think if you want a no frills alteration process I love them. Avoid this place: I hired Mike to take in the chest of a sport coat; he decided, instead, to sew up the side vents. The alteration could not be undone because he cut off material. I've been going to Yvonne at Italmoda for probably 7 years now. I have a good idea of who she is, what she is able to deliver, and what she's all about. It is absolutely no surprise to me that Italmoda is getting 1-star reviews from people, especially the younger/professional Hoboken crowd who feel entitled to a certain level of ass-kissing from local business vendors. Don't expect this from Yvonne. She will not kiss your ass. She is not interested in obeying orders from customers who feel entitled to unflinching obedience from business vendors or servicepeople. I'm 99% sure she doesn't read these reviews on Yelp, and 100% sure she wouldn't care. She is a sweet but sassy Italian nonna and makes no apologies for it. She runs a business and ran out of f--ks a long time ago. If the alteration can be done, it will be done. If it can't, she will tell you it can't. It's that simple. If it can't be done, but you insist that it can, and that she is supposed to do what you tell her because your $50 bill makes you royalty, I'm guessing that's probably the genesis of most of these negative reviews. The shop -- yep. It's a mess and it's going to turn people off. I wish she would clean it, but it is what it is. The first time I walked in there, I was like "what the hell is this..." but let's just say, don't judge a book by its cover. But also, don't walk around in there barefoot. She's never mixed up or misplaced any of my orders in 7 years, so she's clearly got a system down. If I go there on a Saturday afternoon, I have to wait in line. She's obviously doing it right. I've had consistent results which ranged from entirely satisfactory for basic seamstress work, to impressive for complicated alterations. I've had numerous suit trousers, slacks, chinos, dress shirts, casual shirts, and a wool overcoat altered at Italmoda either by Yvonne herself or one of the tailors she employs/subcontracts. I bought a vintage wool overcoat and had it tailored to me and my specs -- not cheap given the heavy fabric and complexity of altering the waist and shoulders, but outstanding work. I happily entrust her with my expensive tailored garments. Be realistic with your expectations, and take Yvonne's guidance and expertise into account. She absolutely knows what she's doing. Approach her with a collaborative mindset and embrace her colorful personality. You'll soon find that she does excellent work at reasonable prices and is a pleasure to deal with. If you're looking for a little kiss-ass business vendor who will happily endure being treated like a doormat by self-important yuppies and works out of an immaculate shop, don't waste your time or Yvonne's time. I came here based on the outstanding reviews on yelp and based on Hoboken Girls recommendation. I needed a bridesmaid dress altered just a tiny bit in the waist and a half inch off the bottom. I came in on a Friday and with my schedule was told the following Friday the dress would be ready. I came that Friday and the shop was closed but there was a number on the door that said call and I can be back in 10/15 minutes. Well, I called 3x and 2 other people were waiting outside calling also. After an hour of waiting I gave up, and left a message saying I'd be back the following Friday. So, the following Friday I go to pickup my dress. The zipper was not sewn onto the dress so I couldn't even try the dress on. After my growing concerns I was told no problem the woman made a mistake but come Sunday and all will be ok. They aren't open on Sundays, so it felt like I was being given a priority based on the condition of the dress. I was told i'd receive a call when to come in. I didn't receive a call Sunday so I went in on Monday at 10 AM. The dress when I tried it on was not up to the standards it should of been. The zipper would barely zip up and the back of the dress where it was taken in was all bunched. I'll include photos of the dress before/after being taken in. Not only was the back zipper a mess, the way they left the seam open was truly horrible. I was told it looked great. It did not look great. I asked about the way the dress was laying if that was correct and he said oh yes yes let me steam the back it will lay perfect then. When I tried it on it again it looked a small percentage better so I thought ok it'll be fine. I asked if he would steam the entire dress and he said no hang it up when you shower in the bathroom and the wrinkles will come out... Honestly I just paid for the shotty alterations and got out of there. I brought the dress to my home tailor to see if she thought anything was wrong and she said i'm putting an entirely new zipper in and thought the work of this seamstress was "horrible and I shouldn't have paid". My alternations now will equal more than the price of the dress :). I am SO disappointed, and I hate writing a negative review on a small business but if I can help anyone avoid what I went through and the stress caused/money lost i'll be happy. The timeframe for the new tailor i'm seeing is tight but being in the wedding I want everything to look nice. I wouldn't recommend coming here, even with all the shining reviews it's not worth what happened to my dress. read more

Yvonne is the best. I took a pair of pants to her about 2 years ago to get hemmed, and they came out great. I came back again recently to get two suits altered, and she remembered exactly who I was. "I remember your hair - I love it." Don't freak out when you walk in; the space has a unique "there's a lot of stuff in here but it's totally organized in a way that doesn't need to be explained to you" kind of way. Walk in with dress pants to get fitted without proper shoes? Stupid. Want jeans hemmed but are wearing flip flops? Stupid. She'll tell you. Double park or park illegally? She has several signs that indicate you are likely getting towed at this very moment. Yvonne knows how things should fit. I gave her a relatively new but generally loose fitting suit jacket (I looked super boxy) to be taken in...it set me back $100, but after she pinned it, it looked like a completely different jacket that actually fits. The other jacket needed shorter sleeves...again, such a small change made a world of difference. For $130 I now have two suits that look much, much better. Cheaper than starting over with something custom, better than letting them sit in my closet or, worse, starting my new job with something ill-fitting. She's fun to work with and her prices are cheaper than most. As long as I live in the area, she's my go-to tailor. read more

I used this business for about two years before I had to switch to another tailor - first of all, there is no price menu, and I was billed different amounts everytime. I brought in a work dress that was twenty dollars cheaper to tailor than a cotton dress? The final straw was when they lost track of my order for a month, and after I called it took them 2 days to get back to me. When I showed up, there was no explanation. I asked what had happened with my order when I went to pay for it, and the older woman retorted "do you not have you order or are you holding it?" I repeated that I had to call and ask about it, and she basically waived me away. Initially, I wrote her off as grumpy, but if I drop $100+ on a given visit I expect to be respected. I took it to a place in downtown Jersey City, but they wanted about $55 to alter the jacket sleeves and pant legs, and they wouldn't have it done for a week or more. I searched Yelp and came across this place. Good reviews and close by, so I figured why not. The locale itself is nothing to write home about. If you're used to going to DeCarlos in Jersey City, then this place will make you seriously think twice. However, as with many things in life, you really shouldn't judge a book by its cover. For starters, the lady who took my measurements was a great person; charming, helpful and funny. Give the fact that the majority of tailors will do a sub-standard job, it's always a pleasure when you come across someone who does an amazing job. After reading the reviews on yelp I figured I would give Italmoda a try, and I'm sure glad I did. The place is run by an amazing older Italian lady named Yvonne. She pulls no punches and tells it exactly how it is with no filter. I handed her two suits to be tightened up and she straight up schooled me as if I was in third grade. I almost started raising my hand to ask questions... She'll tell you exactly what work she can do to your clothes just by looking at the fit, but more importantly she'll tell you what she can't do and what doesn't make sense. She won't waste her time and more importantly, yours. After getting lectured on the history of suit making and what makes a good one, I dropped off my suits and returned a week later to some amazing alterations. She did exactly what she said she could do and did an amazing job at it. This was followed by another lecture about about where to get a good suit so I can bring it to her to be "really" tightened up. I appreciate someone who knows their job and does it well, hence I'll be coming here going forward for any alterations I need. Since moving to Hoboken, I've had tailoring done by dry cleaning shop 'tailors' as well a few other places, but Yvonne at Italmoda stands head and shoulders above all the rest. I wouldn't go anywhere else for tailoring, and I'd trust her with pretty much any job, no matter how complex. During the past year I've had straightforward as well as not-so-straightforward work done here, and it's come out perfectly and been done quickly each and every time. Even the more involved alterations (changing the width and cut of pant legs) have been done in a week or less, and I haven't had a case yet where work needs to be re-done. I had previously tried another tailor located just a few blocks away from Italmoda, but he took several weeks for even simple jobs (shortening sleeves on suit jackets), and didn't always get things right on the first try. My experience here has been so much better. Yvonne exudes great competence - you just know she knows what she's doing. She asks questions, and listens to make sure she knows exactly what you want. Mmmm. where to get another $250 for a new Uniform Jacket?? First a little on me. I am a Professional that wears a uniform. And coming from a military background i take pride in my appearance. So, I save up my pennies to buy a new dress uniform as to have a quality uniform to wear for ceremonies and funerals. I took my uniform to this establishment to get it altered accordingly. while I had no rush on the items, their was a unfortunate line of duty death a couple days later, I called and asked if my uniform could be ready by the date of the wake. they made the accommodations. first thing i noticed they did wrong when i picked up my uniform and got home, was the 2 shirts. Uniforms are to be taken in from the seems on the sides to no alter the appearance. They "darted" the back instead, Unacceptable. I was able to save the shirts. thank god. that while inspecting the jacket, they patched were put on with improper distance, and where not even, on was higher than the other. On closer inspection I discovered they put a damn hole in the sleeve and used the patch to cover it up... this makes me livid. they could have told me they RUINED my $250 uniform jacket, i wouldn't have been angry. not I have to buy a new jacket..... At least I can say i found a new Tailor. A nice hispanic fellow who listens to your needs, and takes absolute pride in his work. BUT ITS NOT THIS PLACE!!!! Last week I brought my Air Force Full Service Dress Uniform to Italmoda to get tailored. The jacket was a bit too large so it needed to be brought in a little bit and needed shoulder pads as well. The pants were short and needed to be lengthened to regulations. You should also know that a military uniform must be tailored from the original seams so as not to add any other lines or stitching to the jacket or pants. They also asked to meet with me a little while before it was done to make sure that everything would come out properly. I needed my uniform in a little more than a week and Italmoda delivered two days earlier than I needed it by, properly stitched using the original seams, and fitting very nicely. For the quality of the work, it was done at a very good price. If you are in Hoboken I highly recommend bringing your uniform to Italmoda. read more

This is your BEST bet for great alterations in the area. I live in JC and after reviewing the local spots, decided to take my bridesmaid dress here -I am soooo glad I did! I didn't have time to send my dress back before the wedding but it was a size too big all around. The dress was one shoulder and fully draped so I didn't trust just anyone to do the alterations. They set me up with an appointment to meet the dress fitter and he was fabulous! Very kind, quick, yet thorough. His work is pricey but a man with that much talent deserves to be paid based on his skill. If you are curious, I paid $95 for all the alterations (bodice only) but trust me when I say that it was totally worth it. The dress was done early and fit like a glove. I got 2 suits adjusted: *Sleeves lengthened (she checked for handwork on the buttons before quoting price, so if you have functional buttons I believe she can handle them) * Tapered the leg and gave advice on 'how much' without affecting the rest of the structure * Slightly tight in the hips, released the crotch a tad to give some more room - Meticulous in her measurements and recommendations - Dropped off on a Tuesday and she had both done by Friday night! Not only did she refuse to help, but she made me feel like a total idiot. Found a different tailor who was wonderful and was accommodating. Nice woman and fine for simple things like dress hems (though expensive). But I would not recommend for more complicated work. I brought in a bridesmaid dress that needed a substantial amount of work and she refused to help, saying there was nothing she could do.
