Nelson took over this REAL custom tailoring shop from a well-known tailor--Dominico Spoleti (who moved back to Italy after running the shop for decades). As a new attorney back in the day, I took a lot of suits to Dominico...and although he was definitely more expensive than your average dry cleaners alterations lady (usually ladies), his work was SPECTACULAR. Seriously. The first item I took him was a wool gabardine coat (Perry Ellis--vintage)...with shoulders way too big. (Got it at a charity shop...for about $30 in the city.,.) He made that coat look like a million bucks. Also, did a bunch of alterations on more expensive, but off-the-rack wool/cashmere suits. Again--perfect fit. Once I took him a 100%, tailored suit I got at TARGET...I loved the lines, and he made it look like an Armani suit. He said it had good bones--otherwise he'd tell me that it "wasn't worth it." I have used Nelson a few times. I think Nelson might have worked with Dominico Spoleti (like as an apprentice). Anyway--Nelson has the same skill set...and most importantly, the SAME DEDICATION to QUALITY, custom tailoring He knows what he is doing. You are not going to necessarily get your clothes back the next day..but if you bring in an expensive suit or piece or dress--and explain, he will tailor it beautifully. TOP QUALITY REAL TAILOR--not your run-of-mill alterations shop at a dry cleaners. And--yes, they are more expensive..but WORTH IT if you have a quality piece of clothing. He went above and beyond and when he was behind on his scheduled time to finish he personally delivered the pants to my address. incredible service. I was walking past on a very cold day and decided to step in because the pockets in my jacket had ripped through the seams and my hands were freezing. This was by far the worst experience I've ever dealt with from a tailor. I arrived here and explained I needed my suit tailored for a wedding the following week and asked if he would be able to get it done by then. He gave me a resounding yes, no problem. I confirm with him 2 times later that he will have it done by the date we agreed. The day I'm supposed to pick up the suit I call and he says he's working on it and will have it done by 3:30. I come in at 3:30 he says he's still working on it and to come back at 7 before he closes. Well I go back at 7 that night and he's not there but left someone there to hand out the clothing. The person looks for my suit and finds that it hasn't even been touched. He lied about working on it to me multiple times. Now I have to travel to the wedding without the suit and find a rental. If he had told me earlier it wouldn't be done I could've taken care of a solution earlier. Overall it took him over a month to have my suit done properly all while he kept telling me it would be done by X day. I'd come in the day he'd tell me and it still wouldn't be done. This happened 3 separate times. Find a different tailor, this place isn't anything special and he overcharges if you don't quote a price beforehand. I typically just 'make do' with my clothing-- but I needed a brand new zipper installed, as well as a 5-6 inch hem on a dress for a big wedding. I waited until last minute, so only had 72 hours to find someone, have them complete the job, and pick it up! I tried a few other well-reviewed tailors in Hoboken and they were unable to complete in time (no fault of theirs), but NRJ was able to install the zipper and hem-- beautifully!!!!-- in time. The zipper and hem honestly look better than the original stitching and hardware did. I wasn't even looking for a regular tailor, but now I have one! Bringing back some other dresses and clothing for various fixes. read more

Racist establishment. I called ahead to understand how much a standard hemming would be (gave them all the details on the phone, that it was just 2 inches off the bottom) - was told 25 on the phone which was their standard hemming prices. After I came in and get measured, they told me "I know I told you this was 25 but it's 90, I'm sure you don't want to pay that." Clearly a racist establishment and I've never experienced anything like this. Anyone knows the market price for a standard hemming like that wouldn't even be close to 90. Sad to see such flagrant racism in such a diverse community like Hoboken. read more

Having well tailored articles of clothing increases their value per dollar, fit, versatility, and lifetime in your wardrobe. Before writing this review, I've brought an array of items including women's: workwear (EMT work pants), casual wear (Madewell pants), business casual, and evening wear. He also tailored a suit for my boyfriend. True tailoring (unlike many others in the area) is more than just raising a hemline. On that note, Nelson at NRJ Custom Tailoring is reliable and detail-oriented. One aspect that makes him an impressive tailor is that he recommends more alterations than you originally anticipated to ensure you get the perfect fit. Needles in hand, he checks the rise, shoulder width, seam lines, buttons, cuffs, draping, thread color and thickness, etc to suit your frame and style. He will nudge you in the direction of a better fit - isn't that what everyone wants? I know I do - Each item I have had tailored fits me like a dream and alterations are not visible. More importantly, as a local business, I value Nelson's commitment to building relationships with his customers. He will remember your name and style preferences. If you're lucky, you may be able to get a custom suit or some of his other beautiful creations. For these reasons and more, he's often inundated with work. While he has done last-minute alterations for me in the past, be sure to bring the items you need tailored early and to check in before they're meant to be ready. DO NOT GO HERE. Please save yourself the anxiety attack, panic, and tears. Terrible customer service. I was supposed to have my dress ready by Monday. I call and they tell me it's still not ready and to come at 5. I come pick it up and it's still not ready. I wait another hour and come back to try it on and they have half the dress done. The strap wasn't even touched. Then had to wait another hour for them to finish it. They had my dress for 3 weeks and waited the day of to hem the dress and fix the strap. Didn't even care that I was upset. Literally laughed in my face. I cannot believe people who run a business would act that way. I will never be going here ever again and will be telling everyone to stay away. They hemmed the dress way too short and the strap was also very short, not at all what I asked. It was a rush job. Completely disorganized and rude. Will never return and trying to help everyone else out to stay far far away so you don't go through this. Domenico is a very rude person. if you want to waste your time waiting for his "service", go ahead. I went to his shop to have some coat buttons moved, and also try his service for the first time.Someone else had just done a bad job. I have been looking for a good tailor, it's becoming a lost service in Hoboken. I have suits I want done, but only after I trust someone. Domenico kept me waiting for 20 minutes one afternoon, and then proceeded to help a customer who came in well after I did. I walked out at that point. I later called him to complain and his response was "I don't need you or your friends". Good business manners is also becoming a lost service. read more

Nelson is so far the best tailor I have ever met in this country. He is very helpful and creative. I got a destroyed high fashion sweater to downsize, and I went to Italmoda tailor nearby. She said it's impossible. But I came to NRJ and Nelson make it happened, and the charge is not high at all. If you want a high-quality work, just come to this tailor shop. If I could give NRJ more than 5 stars I honestly would. They completely saved me last week. The original tailor for my wedding dress was closed due to COVID but I managed to get the dress from them and bring it to NRJ 36 hours before my wedding. Not only did they do a beautiful job tailoring my dress, they were so kind, calm and patient about it and it was ready exactly when they said it would be. They also charged an extremely reasonable amount. I would highly recommend for anyone looking for a great tailor at a good price. read more

I am a Latina with curves and it is hard for me to find anything that fits perfect without getting it Tailored. I heard about NRJ and decided to give it a try. Let me just say Nelson is great! He gives you more then what you're looking for. I have brought in dresses, and old jeans (made them into skinny) and not once did I walk out disappointed. Nelson actually designed and tailored my brother's high school prom tux. I highly Recommend to anyone who needs a good fix. One star- only because the end product was done well. Hands down the most infuriating experience with a tailor I've ever had. Dropped off two pairs of mens pants that required a simple hem and one long dress to be altered. I'm told they will be ready in a week. I hear no word two weeks later so I give them a call. It's two weeks and the items have not even been touched and the owner starts spouting excuses about being busy and what not. I'm a completely rational person and understand the means of a heavy work load but if you are not going to have something ready- just let the customer know and don't act like the customer is out of line for questioning why it isn't ready especially when it's a week later than you said and it literally has not been touched. Had he just called and said it's going to take longer or would have said it will take longer than a week in the first place I wouldn't have cared at all. The items are finally ready- I expect to pay more for things in a city like Hoboken than you would in a smaller outer lying town- but $25 for a basic hem on a pair of pants is ludicrous . $50 for a basic hem on two pairs of pants. The dress that required a simple hem and had to be taken in at the waist - $195. I've been in more weddings than I can count and had major work done to dresses and never in my life spent $195 for basic alterations. If the dress was 4 sizes too big and needed major reconstructing I'd get it- but to have an inch taken in at the waist on a simply constructed $40 dress from H&M is a different story. Save yourself the trouble and do not bother- unless you like ambiguity and being overcharged. I tried him out based on the fantastic yelp review because I really do value great craftsmanship in something like tailoring and am willing to pay for it- but to ask for very basic alterations and get charged astronomically is just plain insulting. read more

As we all know, a good tailor isn't cheap and a cheap tailor isn't good. Domenico falls under the category of "good." His work happens to be great for that matter. His price on the other hand, is unheard of. As a cash-only tailor, he does not give any prices during the initial fitting. Rather, when it comes time to pick up your clothing you're hit with a ridiculous bill. "Ridiculous" translating to 2-3x more than neighboring tailors. If price is no object he's your guy. read more

Domenico Spoleti is an authentic master tailor. His workmanship is world class. His level of understanding of fabric and fit puts him in the Brioni, Armani, RL Purple Label class Italian tailoring. Bring him the best to work on or something from a fast fashion store and you will always leave with a class A garment. My major department store suits look custom made. He's not cheap but you certainly get what you pay for. Don't rush him and don't be fresh, he's an artist. read more

My fiance had a jacket tailored here. Came back a mess. We are very upset. Glue stains on the lining and poor stitching revealed he had glued a large part of the jacket where he had brought in the waist. Not sure how a true tailor can use glue and call himself a tailor! The pockets are sitting funny and there are loose threads hanging from the seams! The old tailor Domenico was a master, he tailored a suit so well you couldn't even tell it was touched. We are beyond disappointed and will definitely take our business elsewhere. read more

I have to laugh when I read Domenico's negative reviews. Domenico is one of the best people in all of Hoboken and he's an artist. When I bring my stuff to him, I know it's going to take him some time to get to it. I also know that it is going to fit perfectly and that the alterations are going to be impeccably done. Because that's what they do in Domenico's shop. He's a craftsman and he respects the materials you bring him. You should not expect that the work is going to be ready for you when he initially says it is. That is true. If you get him into cutting fabric, then that's going to extend the time even further. You need to have patience, but whatever you bring him is going to end up with a custom fit. And if you lay off the sugary beverages, then those clothes are going to last you years. His shop is a counter to the H&M "in one season and out the next" mentality. He puts the finishing touches on off the rack material to give you something personally tailored to you. And that's why you go to Domenico. If you want a dry cleaner to do a quick and dirty on your husband's pants, then you should bring those pants to a dry cleaner. He certainly can do that for you, but that's not Domenico's thing. read more

The only pro is that the quality of work is very good. As for the cons, these guys are expensive just as the other reviewers have said, but that's not the worst of it. I can live with expensive (almost twice as much as other places) as long as I know what I am getting into. Having read the prior reviews before going there, I specifically asked for the price. I was hesitantly given a quote and explained why certain alterations would cost more than the other. Knowing the quote I turned over the garments for alteration. Upon pick up I was asked to pay a significantly more than original quote. They tried to chalk it up to misunderstanding. I tried to tell them that they should absorb the price difference since it was their mistake, but he would not take the amount quoted and demanded higher amount. Whatever happened to good old fashioned honest business??? I was going to drop off a ton of new summer clothes for alteration, but I will take my business elsewhere. If you got a lot of money and don't mind turning over some of it to these guys, but not knowing how much even after getting a quote, go here, otherwise I recommend you find another place. read more
