Horrible service and horrible tailoring work. I had a small tear in a skirt and they put in stitching that did not even close to match the fabric and made the area of concern bigger. It looks so horrible I have to order a new skirt. On top of that- (I think it was the manager) started talking to me in a completely unprofessional tone. Alterations can be tricky. If they charge a lot you may assume it's great (and it might not be.) If they don't charge enough you assume it's bad (and it might not be.) Alterations to go is a nice balance. I recently got a new pair of Paige jeans hemmed and it only set me back $15. Both sides even, nice cuff - not much more you could ask for. Looks like the store did it themselves. I have a jacket that needs some zipper work and another pair of dress pants for work (that I might need sometime in 2022 at this point) so I'll be come here for both of those. Worst customer service from the seamstress and poor management. I was very excited to try this place as the reviews i found on quality of product in terms of alterations were great. However, the customer service and seamstress were awful. I called to make an appointment and was told to come in at 5:30PM today for a 30 minute fitting and when i arrived she told me she has no time and to come back. I had left work early and traveled from Manhattan to make this appointment, which I expressed to the staff, and was basically told "oh well". I am so disappointed by the disregard for time and a planned appointment. I do not recommend this place at all after my experience. It was expensive, but worth the cost. I had a suit jacket done with many alterations. The original suit collar was strange and I had requested they cut off some to the material to make it look more traditional. I went to several other alteration stores near me and no one else would make the change. This is the only store that did it and they did a great job. I wouldn't have know that it looked any different. I gave them amble time (3mo) to alter my suit and they finished the job in a week! They could have taken full advantage of the long deadline, but chose to work quickly. Tailoring piece by piece adds up, but it was still better than buying bespoke. I've attached my receipt so you can get an idea of cost. I had a button up shirt, pants, vest and suit jacket all altered. While it was pricey, the quality was good. I didn't encounter any staining or poorly stitched areas like other reviewers mentioned. I dropped off a brand new dress to be hemmed and when I picked it up the fabric was ruined and pilled as if it had rubbed against something in the hemming process. Whenever I have an alternation need I always hit up Alterations To Go. The staff is pleasant and friendly, the interior is clean and organized (sometimes I feel like alteration shops can be a mess) and most importantly they do a great job on my alterations. I normally stop by if I need length removed from a long dress -- usually it around 30-50 for a gown hem depending on material. I've also come in for body work and that is usually around 50, just depends on the sort of work that needs to be done. Once I took in a dress that came at least 2 sizes too big and they were able to turn it into the perfect fit. Although I usually stop in for dress alterations I most recently came in for a bathing suit alteration. Seems kind of strange, but they turned a regular swimsuit into a racerback swim suit and did a great job. $12.00 very well spent! Very happy to have a go-to alteration shop in the neighborhood. So long as I live close by I'm sure I'll be a customer for years to come! read more

I always have a wonderful experience with Alterations To Go, with both dry cleaning and garment alterations, even with some of the most challenging alteration requests. I have asked this amazing shop to help me with some difficult projects, and they are always professional, careful, and diligent. For instance, I recently asked them to take out two dresses that both had corset tops (with boning), which is typically not possible. But, despite the challenge, they consulted with the seamstress in real time, used unique craftsmanship to accomplish the alteration, and even had the foresight to have me try on the garments before finalizing. The turn around time is always reasonable, usually no longer than a few days or a week at the latest. The staff is always friendly and welcoming. Overall, I cannot recommend this shop enough! read more

Unfortunately this place is a no-go when it comes to shoe repairs. I brought two pairs of heels to them and for the first pair I asked them to tighten the straps, heels, glue, etc. and for the second pair, I asked them to replace one of the buckles. The person misheard for the second pair (even though I pointed it out specifically) and replaced an elastic on one side that I didn't ask to be replaced but did not fix the buckle. Because of this, I requested a refund for the second pair since they didn't fix what I asked them to, and the man working there ARGUED with me back and forth as if it was my fault that they fixed the wrong thing. Then, I wore the first pair the next day, did minimal standing, and within hours of wearing the shoes, the shoe broke. Moral of the story - bad customer service, overpriced ($55 for both shoes and managed to argue for a $25 refund for the second pair) and not good at fixing shoes. read more

A day after I posted this review I received a phone call from the Latin seamstress. She urged me that her job was at risk due to my review, despite me writing nothing but nice things about her. She retrieved my phone number from the computer system and wanted to ask for me to remove my review. This phone call was extremely unprofessional and I found harassing. I would not be surprised if the owners urged her to contact me as it seems that the owners contacted a previous yelp reviewer for ALSO an overpriced dress hem. ---- I found this place on Yelp and although there was some warnings about the business being pricey, I still took the risk. I needed a gown altered for Saturday, so I know it was quite last minute. First.. There is a small changing room in the middle of the shop with curtains. Since the dress I need altered was backless, I requested if there was a more private area I could change in... like a bathroom? When I initially asked the owner (an Asian woman) noted that no there was no bathroom and that I must change in the room. I persisted and noted that I would need to remove undergarments and that the curtains closure did not make me comfortable since it had holes in the curtain. After a few minutes she waved me to go to the bathroom in the back. The bathroom was clean and very spacious. I still don't understand why she didn't want me to change in there.. but WHATEVER. Second... I try on the dress and she is extremely rude regarding whether I should have a bra and specific alterations I requested. I did not have a bra on, but I had silicone stickies and she was like get a bra... I told her I was still trying to find one since the top of the dress was see through and the dress was backless and I am quite busty.. It is difficult to find one. I also wanted a split in the dress and she responded with no.. no split you'll ruin the dress. As I am the customer and want a split... why are you providing your unnecessary opinion??? After some time the actual seamstress (a small and polite Dominican woman) comes from the back and tells me that a split is very much possible. She acknowledges all of my alteration requests politely and places the pins. I wish I could have grabbed her phone number for her to do my dress on her own WITHOUT involving the business. Finally.. The Asian woman informs me that the dress would be a TON of work.. even though the actual seamstress mentioned to me that it would be no big deal to just HEM A DRESS... I was given a price quote of $200.... TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS to hem a dress??? When I mentioned to her that I would not pay that much to ever hem a dress, as I have had wedding dresses and sweet 16 dresses altered for LESS! Her response "This gown is more work than a wedding dress." The gown did not even cost $200.. I requested for her to remove the pins as I would not do my alterations there. She made her husband remove the pins and announced to the other employee.. "Oh she's not doing it here." read more

I ordered a dress online and it ended up being too big, so I took it to Alterations To Go and they got it to the perfect size! The person helping me said that it was a pretty big alteration (it probably had to go down more than a size) and I paid about $90 plus about $15 to get it pressed. This was without getting it hemmed. I am not too familiar with alteration prices because I don't do it too often. It seemed a little more expensive than I was expecting but I assume that's because it was considered to be a major alteration. One piece of advice is if you want anything to be hemmed to bring the shoes you plan to wear with it! They will not do a hem without seeing the shoes which makes sense! read more

I've brought many items here for alterations and they were really attentive and did a great job. Once they did mess up the neckline of a silk shirt I brought in for alteration. The lady working there brought it up herself, and gave me a refund without me even asking. It wasn't that nice of a shirt anyway, so wasn't a big deal, but I appreciate that they were sorry and honest. Recently I brought in a coat to clean and repair some tears/reattach buttons. What a NIGHTMARE of a 'business'. I stopped in to get measured for a dress -- and explicitly told them that I need to be in my undergarments to get the proper measurements needed for said dress. Just measurements, that's the only request I made -- and they tried to tell me that I have to keep my clothing on -- it's the end of October in New York so naturally, I'm in a long sleeve shirt and jeans -- in order to get measurements from them. They've 'never measured anyone before' in just undergarments... which is the biggest load of horseshit I've ever heard. If you're a so-called 'seamstress' who claims to have done this for 20+ years, there's NO WAY you've 'never measured anyone in just undergarments' before. It's a dress that is form-fitting, it would make absolutely no sense to get measured with freaking clothes on. The owners - both wife and husband were VERY rude and I'd beg to guess they didn't want to offer the service complimentary because they weren't making any money off of me. It's a shame that this is the only seamstress in this part of JC/close to Paulus Hook, because that doesn't leave people who live in this area with many options. The wife was also miserably upset when I first walked in -- almost as if I ruined her day by being a potential customer. If you're not going to be happy when new people come in as potential clients, why even have a business??? NO one wants to work with you if you're miserable! Even though this place is local, I'd recommend anyone stay FAR away and go somewhere else that will not only measure you (even if it's just complimentary) but will also service you happily, not begrudgingly! READ the other bad reviews here -- people aren't making it up. This place just wants to make money off of anyone who walks in -- and takes zero pride in their business and actually doing the job correctly. I'm petite and curvy (think a short Sofia Vergara or Christina Hendricks type), so naturally I've been to many tailors (practically everything I wear needs to be altered). So I was pretty excited when I read the Yelp reviews for Alterations to Go II. Five stars! Reasonably priced? Could it be?! I really wanted to find another superb tailor in my neighborhood, and I'm always looking for a bargain. I'm sad to say, my experience at Alterations to Go II, was anything but pleasant. I wasn't greeted with a smile like some of the other customers. Maybe it was my fur hat. Maybe it was because I am short. I don't know. But I didn't let this deter me. This is the NYC/Northern Jersey area after all. Those other customers could have been regulars. Who knows? So I forded forward with my happiest smile. I'd walked through snow to get there, and I had hoped to have a few suits altered (jacket shoulder pads removed, shoulders taken in, arms hemmed, waists taken in, skirts and pants hemmed) - alterations I have had done many times before. Usually, when I go to a good tailor (like Daniel in JC, or Stanton Tailor Shop in Manhattan) I put on the clothes that need altering and they immediately know what needs to be altered. "The pants need hemming. The seat is too low...." And so on. But at Alterations to Go, when I put on the suit, the woman (owner?) asked me, "What needs altering?" ?? That was the first sign that something was wrong. So I proceeded to tell her how to do her job. We debated whether the shoulder pads could be removed, and then she told me my bust was too big, and on it went for about 10 minutes before she confessed that the best tailor wasn't on the premises. ?? That I should come back the following week. ??! During the day, and before lunch time. !!!! I left a simple skirt to be hemmed ($25!) - really kicking myself over giving them my business, and I grabbed my other suits and hightailed it over to Daniel. Oh, good reliable Daniel, why-ever did I cheat on you?! Bottom line, I can't speak for the experiences of the other reviewers (just my own), but $25 to hem a skirt is excessively expensive (other tailors charge half that price), and if you're open for business, you should have a tailor onsite who can do serious alterations. On a personal note, I didn't like having my shape criticized. If off-the-rack fit my rack, I wouldn't need alterations, right? read more

So apparently I gave my bridesmaid's dress measurements wrong to the bride because it came to me 3 inches too small. I was definitely in a state of panic as I do not want to walk down the aisle with it bursting at the seams or the possibility of having no dress. I brought my dress to Alterations to Go hoping for a miracle. They took out the seams and then I had to return to them for them to take it in again. It now fits perfectly. These guys do an excellent job! As for drying cleaning they are prompt and pick up and drop off in my building even though it is not on their normal route. I text them; they pick up and then they text me when they drop off. As to tailoring and repairs, excellent!
