I saw this place featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives...I think it's a very old episode, because what I saw on the episode doesn't really reflect the current status. I love hole-in-the wall restaurants, especially when food is fantastic, delicious, and you crave more. I've eaten here several times... The food is not so great. The teriyaki chicken (thighs) were very dry and overcooked. Thighs should be juicy and moist when cooked properly. Some parts were pinkish, but I believe were cooked. Very concerning. The sauce tasted like any generic restaurant service high fructose corn syrup sauce, nothing special. Not homemade. I could visit a chain eatery if I wanted generic store bought sauce. The mac salad was bland with chunks of potatoes. Some parts looked like dried mayo and had me concerned if it was sitting out for sometime... Prices were in line with other comparable eateries. Hawaiian fast-food ambiance. Self-serve beverages and to-go sauce packet, fortune cookie, plastic cutlery station. One user restroom. Place your order and they bring your order to your table. Orders seem to come out sporadically during busier times. I usually look up County Inspection reports when I dine places. I looked it up after my current visit. Not consistently "A", mostly "C" rating average with food handling violations. Too many times where staff are not washing hands when prepping food and improper food handling...there's a reason that these industry standards are in place. I don't trust an eatery that isn't bothering to wash their hands when handling food especially during a routine inspection from the County Health Dept. There are many restaurants out there with consistent zero inspection violations, unfortunately this isn't one of them... Mahalo! read more

Food is good but you really have to be in the mood for it, its heavy so couldn't eat this multiple times a month. Had the bulgogi pork mini plate with a tossed salad. Well, I hesitate to dispute the other reviewers who are from Hawaii. I've visited several times, but I'm not an "island guy". However, it seems to me the plate lunches I had over there were better than here. Or maybe I just chose the best places there (i.e. I did...using Yelp I sought out the highest rated places on all the islands). I ordered the Bulgogi chicken katsu combo. The Bulgogi was good, but I don't think Koreans would not recognize this as bulgogi. If I just ate it without thinking it was "bulgogi" then it was good. But the seasoning didn't come through for me. The katsu also was lacking any seasoning. It was just breaded (probably with panko breading). Very well cooked, but again lacking any seasoning. My wife ordered the Swai fish and teriyaki chicken combo. The swai was "just fish", and the teriyaki chicken was burned. To their credit, they did replace the chicken when we complained. The second batch was better. The teriyaki actually tasted like teriyaki, so they got the seasoning right on that one. It was probably the best item that we ordered. We paid cash, so we got 2 free spring rolls. They were very fresh and hot. A good veggie spring roll, though perhaps a bit lacking in quantity of filling. They were only about half full. Honestly, I like Ono Hawaiian better. But maybe they were just having a bad day? Serving burned chicken shouldn't happen. read more

Probably the most painful review I will ever write. The place has been in a free fall the last few years and evidently has hit rock bottom. My family has been coming here for over 30 years. It is blatantly obvious the original owners are not involved anymore. Whoever is currently running the place should be fired. They are cheaping out on the food and customer service is nonexistent. Prices have gone up substantially, food quality has hit the floor and yet you see money wasted on fancy menu signs, POS system and hideous decor. The past few times we've gone dishes have not been good. I'm not sure if they are even using the original recipes because nothing tastes the same. They used to make all their sauces for example. Now they are store bought. No quality control or consistency. The final straw for me - last night the manapua was not fresh. And they ran out of RICE! I'm done. Aloha has left the building. Atmosphere - A small place located in a tiny strip mall.  Order at the register which are just about 10 feet further in from the door.  Maybe 10 tables inside, they had two 2-person tables outside which we enjoyed. Food Appetizer - Order of spring rolls, came with four.  Clearly just came out of the fryer seconds before we ate them.  The fillings was so great and fresh. Lunch - I had the Bulkogi Sandwich, a generous portion of bulkogi with lettuce was the menu description.  It was beef, and was great.  I could have just ate the meat.  Sandwich had plenty of it too.  I also ordered a Spam Musubi, they must sell a lot based of the display case.  I could have used a little less rice, but who does not say that about musubi. We found this place from watching Diners, Dives, and Drive-ins, we frequently visit Hawaii and were excited to find a local authentic place with Hawaiian favorites. We might have come on an off day but our shrimp was overcooked, the macaroni salad had no flavor, but the teriyaki chicken was great! Fill yourself soda station, Hawaiian juice, and a couple unique drink options as well. Friendly staff, greeted us as we walked in and helped us navigate the menu. The restaurant has very limited seating, felt like we were in a cafeteria, painting on the wall was within theme but there were splatters from the lower part of the wall up the mural like food had dumped and no one wanted to clean it, bathrooms were dirty. I am a big fan of good teriyaki, so when we were in Mesa I had to check this place out. The reviews are so positive - and Guy Fieri came here for an episode of DDD. Hubby and I just recovered from Covid and needed some good food, so we donned our masks to order at the counter and ate outside on the patio. We both ordered the teriyaki bowl, which came with chicken with rice and veggies and we were so happy with our meal. First, it had the best teriyaki flavor - not too sweet or salty, just the perfect blend of spices. The chicken thigh was tender, moist and huge! I devoured my meal, but couldn't finish it all. There was plenty of sticky rice and a ton of veggies - broccoli, carrots and those cute little mini corn cobs. The veggies were fresh and cooked just to tender. I hate mushy veggies! The only suggestion I have is that once they are steamed, toss them in a little melted butter or some other sauce. We mixed ours up with the teriyaki. They have a condiment that is basically a mix of sesame seeds and spices, which tasted really good sprinkled on our teriyaki. Love, love, love the food here! I wish the staff and other customers wore masks, but we have been in Arizona for a week now and realize everyone here thinks Covid is a myth or that they won't catch it. I went to Aloha Kitchen after watching Guy Fieri come to Arizona and the restaurant being only 4 miles from my house I said I need to try it! I wanted to get the same thing Guy had tried. The Manapua (meat bun) and the Korean short ribs. They did not have the short ribs so I went with the grilled beef. The grilled beef was very flavorful and was more than I could expect to eat in one serving. The Manapua was interesting... I have never had them so not sure if I should have dipped them in something or put something on it? I'm going to say not much flavor but really soft and gooey I will for sure try again after I read up on how to eat them. The thing this place has going for it is that it is fast with getting your food out. We've consulted the Phoenix New Times best restaurants and we decided to try this place out. Friday night and almost every table was filled both inside and outside. The restaurant is counter service - whether you dine in or take out, the service was great and the food came out within 10-15 minutes. We tried their combo plates with katsu, bulgolgi, and teriyaki/bbq chicken. The plates were big so generous portions for sure. However the meat was somewhat dry. The bulgolgi was somewhat overcooked and some of the meat was also either dry or very chewy, almost like chewing on the tendon portion. The chicken was somewhat dry but the sauce made up for it. The katsu I thought was the best as it was extra crispy; however the katsu sauce was a little more on the sweet side. Potato salad or green salad were options in addition to the meat over rice. Overall, I thought this place was okay and was comparable to L&L (however L&L is better). I'm not sure about the other popular Hawaiian joint in the Phoenix area but that is next on my list to compare this place too. read more
