#13 Katsu and BBQ Combo
Deirdre L.

The service was fast and the restaurant was clean. We got our order I about 7-8 minutes. While we were waiting, there was a constant stream of people coming in. The food was very good and similar to Hawaiian Ono. We ordered a #13 and #19.

The best Hawaiian BBQ chicken I have ever had! Wishing Big Island Hawaiian BBQ was closer to my home because I could see this becoming an addiction. I ordered the mini bowl with BBQ chicken and cleaned my plate. Definitely a must-try.

Want to satisfy your Hawaiian eats? Come check out Big Island Hawaiian! I got the BBQ chicken which came with steamed broccoli/cabbage and macaroni salad. All items were filling and delicious. The bbq chicken was so tender and juicy, was dry. I enjoyed my meal and will be coming back. Tables were clean. Staff was great!

Big Island brings the big flavors of the islands... and not just the big island, but the other islands too! I mean, really, why should Oahu and Maui not get honorable mention for their BBQ, right?!? Anyway, I have grown to love this place more over the years after having other Hawaiian BBQ... so I guess that should tell you something! The Big Island BBQ mix is where it's at here.. but really everything I have tried is pretty damn spectacular! And don't forget the spam musubi (pronounced moo-soo-bee) -- it's simple yet tasty and delicious! Service could always be a little friendlier, but you're not here for the service, youknowwhatImean??? Overall rating: *****FIVE STARS***** Gluten-free rating: ****FOUR STARS****

Big Island Hawaiian BBQ has some big flavor! Stopped by for lunch with my sis in law. We each ordered the crispy shrimp mini, ~$9.39. It came with 5-6 pieces of fried shrimp, a small scoop of rice, a small scoop of macaroni salad and a few pieces of broccoli. It's the mini portion for a reason, so it's perfect if you're looking for a light meal. Great price point. The shrimp had a nice flavor and crunch to it. The macaroni salad was excellent and my favorite part of the entree. I've already decided that when I return, I am going to double the amount of my macaroni salad!

The inside wasn't that great looking. But the food definitely makes up for that. I got my order to go so it didn't really matter how the inside looks. But figured I would add this for people who want to dine in. The pork was very moist and delicious. It had a slightly sweetness to it. The macaroni salad was alright. The chicken was cooked nice as well. The beef was slightly overdone but still not bad. The service was also great and the staff was friendly. Overall Taste: 7.5/10 Ambiance: 3/10 Value: 8/10 Service: 9/10 Speed: 8/10 I would recommend getting the pork. That was my favorite out of the three meats.

Not the best representation of true Hawaiian lunch plates. The food didn't taste bad it just had more of an Asian taste than Hawaiian.

I stopped by Caldwell County BBQ for dinner on a Saturday evening. Located in Gilbert, I found…read morestreet parking right in front of the restaurant despite it being quite busy. I'll preface this review by saying I have very high standards when it comes to BBQ. I am from Houston after all. Caldwell County BBQ very much lived up to the hype. It's no surprise their reviews are so good. Ambiance (5/5): Caldwell County BBQ serves Texas-style BBQ. I felt right at home. There's a lot of Texan decor and the sort of ambiance you would expect at a BBQ joint. It's a spacious restaurant with plenty of seating outside and a decent amount of seating inside. We sat inside. One of the things they do well is keeping the A/C blasting both indoors and outdoors (while you're likely going to wait in line) along with misters. Definitely something you need in Phoenix! Service (4/5): I hate waiting in line. Though it's not unusual at popular BBQ spots, I still wish places like this would hire a couple of more people to make the line move faster (or even completely eliminate the lines). We probably waited in line for about 20 minutes. They have a water cooler along the route, but it was all out. Something the staff should check on a little more frequently. With all this being said, Caldwell County is well worth the wait. Drinks (5/5): Whenever I'm at a BBQ joint, I'm looking for sweet tea. Which they have here. Plus your standard assortment of soft drinks and alcohol, with a focus on beer. Food (5/5): BBQ joints typically have you pay by weight or by plates (one meat, two meats, three meats, etc.). Caldwell does it by the pound unless you go with a sandwich, loaded baked potato, etc. What's nice is they also have a family pack for 4 which comes with brisket, pulled pork, and your choice of ribs, sausage, or one other protein which is escaping me. Plus two large pint-size sides. We rolled with this option as it's a good deal (brisket, pulled pork, and St. Louis style ribs with corn casserole and mac and cheese). White bread, pickles, onions, and jalapenos are available free of charge. There are three BBQ sauces at each table: their classic BBQ, spicy, and AZ gold). We also added a quarter pound of the AZ burnt ends. Man, these are some quality meats. Brisket is the true test of Texas BBQ and the shining star. The brisket here isn't the best I've ever had but it's quite respectable. The sweet and spicy AZ burnt ends were delicious too. The ribs were tender and had a nice sweet glaze on them. The pulled pork was my least favorite, but still quite good. The sides are solid, though they could be a bit better. The mac and cheese was too peppery for my taste and the corn casserole was too sweet. Like pretty much all craft BBQ these days, Caldwell County BBQ isn't cheap. But the quality is there. This is the type of place that I would come back to again and again. They also have a location in Peoria though this one is the original. And I hear they don't run out of meats as other BBQ joints do (especially in Texas). That's a big plus! It's always a bummer when a BBQ joint is out of something you want. If you haven't been to Caldwell County BBQ, change that quick. Yeehaw!

Parking 5/5 We arrived at 6 pm and took one of the last spots in the back. Service 10/5 Celebration arrangements were done by my neighbors amazing daughter who ordered the Full Monte sampler which included generous portions of protein, all the sides and drinks. Seating 15/5 Anyone familiar with Caldwells business model knows this is a wait inline to order, move over to the cashier then search for seatings which can be challenging at best during peak lunch & dinner hours. In our case the Caldwell's manager Torrin personally re-arranged tables so our group could be seated together and included one table for all the food and gifts. Food 10/5 This rating recognizes Caldwell's BBQ is wildly popular. Pushing it higher for this experience was how the food was delivered to the party. Once our party of 30 were seated together, four + large variety platters of protein, sides and fountain beverages were placed on a serving table family style. Atmosphere 5/5 The back patio was our celebration location and it was filling up quickly and we gathered for the celebration. During the course of our visit we enjoyed the transition from daylight to evening where the atmosphere of the back patio began to soften with a wonderful span of string patio lighting for outdoor ambiance. This quickly became an extremely fun place to move table to table visiting with everyone. My neighbors family (11 siblings, 9 stateside) are Doctors and Nurses who served in the VA Hospitals throughout the US and their families who have treated me as family over the years. What a beautiful family and culture. Caldwell's staff To Torrin. Malissa our birthday Girl's daughter made all the arrangements and surprise us with a banquet; and you delivered big time for this celebration!m. From getting our food out to arranging tables to keep our large group together is truly amazing! The entire Caldwell team has our sincere gratitude. Food and venue were off the carts to handle a Luau style feast like this. Clearly the Caldwell's team went above and beyond for us! Thinking about BBQ my friends, stop thinking and get to Caldwell's Country BBQ-SYOY!

Parking was a breeze, and since there were three of us (including one never-full teenager ), we went for the Mexi-Q Platter and added an extra birria taco so everyone could try one. It absolutely lived up to the hype! The surprise standout? The brisket tostada--sooooo flavorful and satisfying on every level! We also loved the sausage link, Mexi-Q twinkies (aka smoked jalapeños stuffed with brisket and cream cheese, then wrapped in bacon ), and honestly, everything we tried was a hit. For sides, we ordered Grandma's Calabacitas (a yummy squash veggie mix), roasted cream elote, and Julio's mac n' cheese (which I skipped, but the guys were big fans). We wrapped up this phenomenal meal with their GF banana pudding (they offer both GF and regular options), and it was seriously scrumptious--such a treat to have a gluten-free dessert that feels just as special! From the moment we walked in, the service was warm and attentive. They double-checked that everything we ordered (minus the mac n' cheese) was gluten-free, which is always such a relief. It means so much when a place truly understands gluten and can clearly guide you on what's safe. We sat outside and soaked up the beautiful weather--it was the perfect setting for such a fun and tasty meal! An easily awarded and well deserved

I liked that sauce so much that I'd consider going back just to try it on some of their other bbq. I didn't like the brisket birria taco as much because it was way too salty for me. The mac and cheese was also just okay. It had so much sauce that it was too thick and unpleasant to eat. The vibe was good though. They have seating inside and outside. I love that they had the misters running to keep the outdoor seating cool. The staff was also very nice.

Stumbled across this gem while visiting Scottsdale for Spring Training. I saw the reviews coming…read moreout the airport and was stunned at the reviews. We got our rental car and drove right over. Because we were hungry we decided not to wait in the line but reschedule to go back on Friday. I looked more at the reviews and Tik Tok's and saw this place was legit and the beef rib was to die for. Comes Friday, we get there at 10:15 am right before the line built up. We spoke with one of the employees for while regarding what to order and about Spring Training while we were in line. As we got in, you order at the counter and pick what you want. The employees are cutting up the food in front of you and weighing it. The inside area has limited seating and it's very narrow. Outside theres a good amount of seating but filled up right away. I ordered the beef rib for my dad and I to share, a plate for myself with brisket and turkey. I got cole slaw and mac sald on the side, both were kind've whatever for me. The turkey honestly is a sleeper pick, it was delicious and more flavorful that I thought. Brisket was mouthwatering and so tender but that beef rib lived to the hype. It fell off the bone and had the perfect fattiness to tender ratio. We enjoyed the outside and feasted but it's quite expensive like all BBQ. The quality was fresh and I would definitely recommend if you are in the area. I don't eat BBQ a lot so I don't have a huge sample size for whats good or not but I loved it!
