Don't get the Sweet Plantains!! I totally thought it would be more like a traditional Costa Rican breakfast (beans, rice, eggs and plantains). I was very mislead. The "mashed black beans" I really did not like. It was just black goo, and it honestly didn't taste good at all. It didn't go well with the eggs or plantains. I gave two stars because the experience was nice and the plantains alone were really good. If management is reading this, pair the plantains with something more tasty! read more

I met a friend for dinner on Thursday. There was no one else in the dining area, but a few at the bar. TJ greeted us and seated us in the dining area, which was fairly small. He said that it is normally just him and the chef/owner that work on any given night. I ordered the chicken marsala that was served over mushroom risotto iwth some crispy prosciutto, which was a nice touch. It was fabulous, very tender and flavorful! My friend ordered the Mongolian combo and said it was very good. We will definitely be back to try some of the other dishes! read more

I've now eaten Ado's food at three locations: 503 Cafe in old town then later South Boulder in Lafayette, and now in Boulder. All three times the diverse food menu has been exceptional, the service has been personable yet not polished, and the marketing and vibe fall a bit short of the rest of the market. You can either see cynically as a restaurant that's too unsophisticated for its Boulder location--or optimistically, as a restaurant that serves excellent food at excellent value in an authentic way. read more

What an unexpected gem of a restaurant in Boulder! My son recommended it to me as the best food he's ever had. As a 25 yo grad student he's hardly a foodie and I took that recommendation with a heaping grain of salt, especially considering it's location on The Hill. But dang if the boy wasn't right! Ado's is a casual place and the decor won't bowl you over, although I did appreciate the funky artwork on the walls. My first impression of the menu is that is was ambitious. My second impression is that if the kitchen can pull this off then it's a difficult choice. I finally opted for a chicken valdostana since my son ordered the grilled pork chop that I really had my eye on. The dish was perfect. I've eaten at a lot of quality restaurants in Chicago and beyond and this was every bit as good as I've ever had. I also sampled my son's pork chop and it was equally delicious. Ok, I may have had more than a bite of his pork chop. It was sooo good. Please visit this place. The night we were there (admittedly a slow Monday) we were the only customers. This is too good a restaurant to let die. I can guarantee you will not be disappointed. read more

This restaurant just opened but apparently the chef/owner has quite a following from his previous place out in Lafayette. It's wonderful to see another restaurant serving significant, full and interesting meals on the Hill. It's a good sign. The menu includes Spanish/Latin foods and Italian classics along with some Asian standards like Pad Thai. The owner had graciously lent part of his space for some neighborhood discussions and put out a few introductory appetizers. I was too busy to have any, but the place smelled great. I had looked at the menu before the meeting and decided that when my husband showed up to meet me after work, we should have dinner here. Good choice. While my husband was waiting for me to finish at the meeting, he sampled the treats and said they were quite good. We ordered our meal at the counter from the owner and took seats in the space still with seating this evening for regular diners. (Note- Though it is the Hill and counter ordering, he has real dinnerware and cloth napkins at dinner!) The space is divided into two separate eating areas by some typically weird Hill architecture. Maybe it was originally two places decades ago. Don't know. We shared the fried brussels sprouts appetizer with a friend on her way out and we all agreed it was a great use of one of our favorite veggies. Apples and pistachios added good texture and contrast. My husband and I shared the stuffed chayote squash entree since it looked huge in the pictures, and we were right. For a weekday meal it was more than plenty for the two of us. Nether of us had had chayote before and we liked it. A little crisp and pear shaped with a cheese filling and served over a simple tasty risotto and a slightly sweet sauce described as rustic tomato but clearly full of other things too. I find a lot of tomato sauces a bit too acidic and this was not. Too busy to interrupt for an explanation but I'll get it next time. We each had an herbal flavored fresh brewed black tea, iced, and since the liquor license process is still ongoing (this is Boulder after all) so be aware it is currently the main drink. I guess there is coffee and tea with breakfast, but truthfully, for an "on the way home" dinner meal for us tonight, the iced tea was perfect. We plan to go back after Thanksgiving and try some of the other specialties. I have read the reviews of his former place that was lost to a real estate deal for the shopping center it was in (I think that a church bought the whole place for offices) and it sounds like this chef has a lot of talent. I would like to see the addition of a few small plate options at dinner because it would be nice some evenings for people like me. But if that doesn't happen, sharing or taking home leftovers, when appropriate, is possible. I thought that the prices were entirely appropriate for the quality meals he serves. read more

Great place on the hill - variety of items on the menu to suit needs of picky and non-picky eaters. I usually get the Pad Thai because it is a good bang for your buck, and the heat is very mild (I add sriracha to my own spice level). This week, I tried the Basil Chicken - nice sweet basil flavor. There are a few crushed peanuts in this dish, so if you have a peanut allergy - take note. I would like to add broccoli to this dish next time to give it a little color and some extra veggies. Waited about 15 minutes for food, which is very normal. Good place, spacious, and clean bathrooms. Next time I come, I am trying a breakfast omelette or burrito because they looked really good. read more

We were greeted by a bar tender who showed us this amazing artwork and then introduced us to the artist. So fun and social and real! Ado's Kitchen & Bar is by far one of the best restaurants in Boulder. The service from TJ was fantastic. He was attentive, knowledgeable and very friendly. We were really impressed when Ado (Chef and owner) came out himself to take our appetizer order and to recommend wine pairings for our meals. The food was over the top and for our family of four served very generous portions (our boys are college students and always hungry)! The full bar offered a wonderful selection of wines and TJ included our 19 year old with a great "mocktail". The menu is broad, diverse and very affordable. We all ordered something different and each dish was as good as the other. For a great meal on The Hill in Boulder give Ado's a try. read more

Everything was delicious! I ordered the breakfast papusas and my boyfriend ordered the sweet plantains. The chef offered to make the papusas vegetarian for me...they were served with 2 eggs, salsa, and avocado on top....so good!! This review is long over due. We made reservations at the restaurant for my husband's birthday but when we showed up were told the restaurant was closed. I was upset of course, but the owner came out seated us, personal cooked for us and served us even though the kitchen was closed. Not too many restaurants that would do that. This spot was open for dine-in during COVID, and I stopped in with someone right around brunch time for a meal. We got the sweet plantains and the eggplant florentine, and BOY was the eggplant florentine delicious. I ordered the sweet plantain dish for myself, and after i finished that, I was sneaking as many bites of the eggplant as I could... All in all, the food was great. read more

First time visitors to the restaurant. Everyone out of our party of 6 was delighted with the taste of their meals. The food is very tasty and satisfying. We asked for hot sauce just in case but nobody used it. The veggie omelette was crammed with Swiss chard, mushrooms, and uniformly diced bell peppers and onions. I had them leave off the fontina cheese and it tasted just fine. They did overcook the egg part of the omelette and browned it on the outside. This made for a very dry, firm egg texture that I find undesirable in an egg dish. Fortunately the ingredients and taste carried the dish. Some of the potatoes were overly greasy and browned too much. I don't understand why restaurants serve potatoes this way. I pushed the undesirable ones off to the side and devoured the others which were very good. I was able to try the benedict with pesto, ham, and prosciutto that my daughter ordered and it was delicious. The eggs looked perfectly poached and the pesto was yummy. Lovely smokey deliciousness from the ham and paprika. My husband had the steak and egg burrito. He enjoyed it and said the ingredients were cooked perfectly. His brother raved about the Pupusas and how marvelous tasting the dish was. Nobody was truly disappointed. I inquired about the gluten-free pancake that was on the menu but was told that it is not available because they don't have enough requests for it. They also don't carry gluten-free toast. I was surprised that this Boulder restaurant didn't have more gluten-free options. (I realize the Breakfast Pupusas Plate is gluten-free but not everyone wants meat and dairy with it.) The staff was very friendly and attentive. They seemed to care about making sure you had everything you needed. The restaurant itself is very large. We arrived shortly after they opened at 9 am and they weren't that busy. I wish them much success as they do try very hard to provide good meals and service. Because of the lack of gluten-free options, I probably won't return. read more

What a great find! The food here was really spectacular. I had "The Salmon Dish" and loved every bite. My husband got the grilled pork chop, and the rich flavor and risotto were to die for. The prices are reasonable and the waitstaff was friendly. The chef delivered our meals, and we enjoyed talking to him. We are looking forward to our next visit here and what we will try. We love Ado's. We come for lunch and dinner often. Every time we bring friends, they are amazed that such an unassuming place could turn out such amazingly good food. Had to eat food before heading back to Missouri and this place surprised me simply for having plantains! I ordered the steak breakfast burrito, pancakes and a side of plantains. Sadly the burrito was dry and currently I forget what ingredient was added that seemed to be misplaced in it but I still ate it. The plantains, the entire reason I stopped, was under cooked. What I have had from African and Jamaican spots are very ripe fried plantains. These were most likely still hard and fried. When I came the place was completely empty and there was a small issue of doing to go orders. We had to place all the condiments on the food before leaving due to not having to go containers. I didn't mind but would have loved to have them for later instead of letting food soak. I also wouldn't mind coming back to try other things if in town again. But it may be a miss hit again. read more

The food here is incredible! The service is great! very unique and wide variety of dishes on the menu - everything from Italian, German, Asian - all deliciously and perfectly seasoned. The lemongrass curry was the best I've ever had! always easy to get a table during the week, but i'm not sure why! not a college kid's budget - but for family visiting your kids, it's a great place to treat them to a fabulous meal, great cocktails and beer, and be able to watch all the happenings in The Hill through their big window front dining room! love it, we've been twice and will go again!! read more

This is a good spot, I wouldn't say that it has anything that specifically sets it apart or makes it stand out but the food is really good. Quality for a college town. The Brussels sprouts are amazing, flavored with pear and pistachio. The drinks are good and it's a good atmosphere paired with both a sports bar and American style restaurant. read more
