All in all, a nice place to get a craft cocktail. A darkly-lit modern-feeling space with a typical shotgun layout, you can tell it's pricey from the second you sit down and the bartender immediately pours you a glass of ice-free water. I've personally never understood why bars do this, because generally when I go to a bar, I came to get a drink that's specifically NOT water, but I digress. I ordered my usual Lemon Drop, the drink by which I assess how good a bar is, and a young hipster dude got to concocting my beverage. The bar was pretty dead, as it was after 1 am, so my cocktail arrived relatively quickly. The Lemon Drop was delicious, made to my specifications (no sugared rim!) and very well-balanced. My partner ordered an Old Fashioned, and the two of us clinked glasses to each other's health! The one jarring element is that the speakers were blaring old late '60's-early '70's jam band music, with whiny male vocals and screaming guitars. It clashed violently with the overall feel of the bar, and was unpleasant to listen to. The entrance and general bar area are WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE, although would be considerably less-so if all the stools were taken and the space were more crowded. The employees moved some stools at the bar for me unprompted, which I thought was really considerate of them! The back area has more tables in a wider space, so would have a better turn-radius for a larger wheelchair or mobility scooter looking to turn around and leave. I don't know about the accessibility of the bathroom, as I did not use it. Be careful about coming here after 12:30 am looking for a drink. Even though their website maintains that they are open until 2 am every night, the next two times we showed up looking for a cocktail, the bartenders had decided to do last call early and we were out of luck. I enjoyed my cocktail here and will definitely be back. In an area with a lot of nightlife and a lot of rowdier bars, this one sticks out as being a slight bit more sophisticated and has a lower noise level, which is great for talking. read more

I'm feeling like The Girl from Ipanema. My boyfriend and I sat at the community tables and chose to side sit (as opposed to sitting across from each other) which is a very silly choice. "Just so you know, if other people need seats they might sit here and you might end up on an accidental double date," our server mentioned. I like the ambience and decor of the bar, it's well lit and has a lot of seating. The lady at the front desk does not seem very friendly unfortunately. First visited ABV in 2020 when it was on the top 100 bars in the world list. This visit 3 yrs later finds it at #39 on the top 50 bars in North America list. First, upon entering we were greeted immediately by a server telling us where there were available seats and handing us a drink menu. Super friendly and not at all like many of the "top ranked" snob bars (here's looking at you Employee's Only). The cocktail menu is creatively simple and organized in a way to make finding what you like easy. We all were in a mezcal mood so it was Lefty's Highball for all of us. Kendra took our order promptly and the drinks came without a long wait. Highly recommend the Lefty's Highball if you like light and refreshing mezcal drinks. The charred grapefruit tonic is amazing. I asked one of the bartenders about how they liked to use Averno Amaro and we had a nice chat. A few minutes later, Kendra came back and referenced my question about AA, which led to a 15 minute conversation that went from amaro to overall mixology 201 (Kendra could teach the grad-level class--it's my knowledge that kept it more basic). I liked ABV before because the drinks were great. I love it more now because the staff were so friendly, accommodating and informative. Officially my new favorite SFO bar and a top 5 for the US for me. Haven't ever had the food so can't review that, but go for the drinks and the service. You won't be disappointed. read more

Giving this place one star for a recent experience that was not at all customer friendly. We arrived late to a birthday group, planning just a nightcap. Our group of friends was seated outside at front, and they had been drinking there for a couple of hours already. The two of us went directly inside to the bar to get drinks, but were REFUSED SERVICE because they had already seen us talk to the group at the table. We were told we had to order from that table's server. This we did, only to then also be informed that our bill would be added to the table bill. The waitress refused to take payment for our specific drink order. This is primarily a BAR, is it not? Customers should be able to buy a drink at the bar, and opt out of getting involved in an already large group tab. This bill then ended up coming to about $500, with predictably some confusion as to who had what. The addition of our drinks could only have made this worse, and has now led to some disagreements about who's on the hook for what. I suggest that this establishment should consider allowing customers to buy drinks at the bar in person whenever they want. Personally I would never agree to run a table tab in a bar like that (a rolling group of 10-20 people, and we were not even the last to arrive), but as mentioned we were not there at the beginning of the evening. This is about making life easy for the bar, and not about good service. read more

We went there around 11 pm and got to sit at the bar , which I really like. The bartender greet us and tell us about the food menu on the board and gave us drinks menu. We ordered Fish Tacos and burger. They were so good!!! The fish taco was crispy and got nice spices in it. The burger was juicy and the chips also good We got 4 cocktails, which I like them all but didn't remember the name. After a day at Dolores Park, we decided to walk over and grab some quick bites and drinks at ABV. It was around 6pm on a Saturday , and the place was already packed but we found some seats facing opposite of the bar. DRINKS: We got the Atomic Bomb (pineapple rum, lime, mint, sherry, pineapple) and Gin&Celery. The Atomic Bomb was sweet and refreshing, and overall was a pleasant drink. But the Gin&Celery was by far the more unique of the two. The celery taste is strong and goes surprisingly well with the gin. It's a bit savory and reminds me of fresh pressed green juice. FOOD: We ordered the octopus a la plancha, which comes on a tray with fries, grilled octopus, and a side if aioli dressing. For $17, it was a lot of food and the flavors on the octopus were fantastic. You can taste the lemon and herbs in the dish, which pairs perfectly with the creamy chipotle aioli. We also got the tacos, which were okay. While the shrimp was very fresh, it was something I could probably skip out on next time. This place was jumpin! I was out exploring Valencia St at night and some of the cross streets and I stumbled upon this place at some point. Came in just to check the vibe and it seemed pretty cool so I stayed for a bit. You don't walk up to the bar for a drink, you sit and someone comes and takes your order FYI. It was pretty quick of service too given how busy it was. The cocktails are not cheap but you should already expect that in SF at an establishment with mixologists and not bartenders. A good time was about to be had By the time we got here, another friend met with us. She had just come from HH with coworkers down the street. In a way, she was on the same level since she also had a couple of drinks. Claudia picked a perfect place. I was cross faded by the time we sat down so I was ready to keep it going. I had two cocktails here. That's pretty much all I remember. The food here was wow. None were my picks, but all were amazing. The fried cauliflower was a personal favorite. I almost got a second order, but I knew we had a long night ahead of us. Also, I was vetoed by the group so I had no choice. We also got an order of tacos. I only had one. They also got something else, but I tapped out so they ate it all. We stayed here a little longer than the first place since we ate more food. All 4 of us also had 2 drinks each that we sipped on slower than usual. I think I was trying to lean towards being more tipsy since I knew we were going to keep drinking. I was drinking more water than usual since I knew I'd be sticking to sugary cocktails. The service here was right up my alley. The people who checked on us were so funny and chill. Special mention to our server who hooked me up with bandaids that I desperately needed since I was bleeding from a cut. The lady who made sure we were all set cracked a few jokes with us. ABV has been on my radar for a long time. I'm not from SF so I've had very few opportunities to go out in the area, but I made a point to visit ABV during my most recent trip. It's a mainstay in the Mission and while the cocktails aren't super complex with fat washing, molecular gastronomy and tons of infusions, they are approachable and delicious while still being elevated and impressive. It's a hard balance to strike, and ABV does it with ease. And unlike a lot of swankier cocktail bars (which I love too, don't get me wrong) ABV is a chill, warm place to grab a drink and have a bite. Though I've yet to be a "regular" at any bar in my lifetime, I remarked to my husband during our time at ABV that this is the type of place I could totally see myself frequenting on a weekly basis if I lived in SF. It's just got that cozy, friendly vibe, with drinks and food a plenty. We came here at around 8pm, actually on New Years Eve. We had purchased tickets to go to a club later that night, and wanted a laidback venue to start at for casual eats and some good cocktails. ABV fit the bill. They weren't having any special NYE event, so we were able to roll up and grab a few seats at the bar. If I could do it over again, we would've stayed for one more drink. We showed up too early to our later plans, and I much would've preferred to hang at ABV for a while. But alas, we only stayed for two drinks. Still, they were all fantastic and gave us a nice sampling of the menu. I'm a martini girl, so I obviously had to start with the Tangerine Dream (leopold bros. '25' gin, dry vermouth, orange bitters, tangerine oil), which is pretty clearly special because of the tangerine oil. A great example of how a simple, subtle variation can make for an interesting and delicious drink. My husband started with the Mumbai Mule (saffron vodka, lemon, ginger, mint, soda), which was super refreshing and a great drink to kick off a long night. For our second round, I got the Lefty's Highball (single village mezcal, orange bitters, lime, charred grapefruit tonic) while my husband got the Seven Fingers (rum, passionfruit, lemon, calamansi liqueur, falernum). The Lefty's Highball was truly a perfect cocktail. I'm a mixology nerd, and I couldn't even tell you why it was so perfect. Refreshing but still interesting and impeccably balanced. Food-wise, ABV has a lot of small bites that you can easily cobble together a meal with. We ordered a solid variety (and maybe one plate too much, but oh well) and it was all delicious. Eats, below: Grilled Trumpet Mushrooms: A Pretty simple preparation but it nicely offset the heavier dishes we ordered. Fried Cauliflower: A I'm not a big fried food gal but these were only lightly battered. Served with a yummy dip. Hit the spot more than I expected them too. Octopus a la Plancha: A- A little octopus and a lot of fries. Could've done with a more favorable ratio but not the worst thing in the world for a long night of drinking. Gulf Shrimp Tacos: A+ Very very yummy. I didn't realize the shrimp would be fried, but it was subtle -- less fried than the cauliflower. I hadn't eaten shrimp tacos in a while and these were excellent foray back into the taco life. Meat and cheese plate (two meats, one cheese -- three of $24): A We had the two salamis and a semi-soft cheese. Sadly they were out of the cheddar that we wanted but what we got was still solid. Served with otherworldly stone-ground mustard (I know how silly that sounds, but just trust me), tasty jam and butter. Lastly, just a general shoutout to the staff here. Everyone was super friendly, attentive, generous and personable. That's just about all you can ask of an establishment. Came over here after hanging out with a friend at Dolores Park. I remember seeing the Fried Chicken Sandwich when I was browsing the menu awhile ago when I was passing by. Probably the best fried chicken sandwich I had so far. The chicken was tender and buttery. That's what made the sandwich for me. The cocktails are hella good here too. I ordered something from the menu but forgot the name of the drink. All I remember is the bartender mentioned it was made with Japanese Whiskey. It tasted like an old fashioned to me and was just as stiff as one. Overall atmosphere was great too. i remember the bartender mentioned the music changes with how they feel the flow of the restaurant is going. I was here on a late afternoon/early evening Sunday and the chill, golden age hip-hop they were playing in the background fit the mood of the restaurant. I had to say something about the music as I always remember a place with good music. Overall it's pricey but a good place to go to every once in awhile. Great food and great food. Love coming to ABV. Whether it's a night out with friends, a date night, or even flying solo. ABV serves up artisanal drinks and good eats. My favorite js the fried chicken sandwich and fries. I would come here just for the fried chicken sandwich and fries and won't even need any cocktails (yeah right lol). But seriously. Delicious! Crispy and has that bite that lots of other places don't know how to do or get down. It's very dim in there and while the space runs deep in the back, I do feel it is a bit tight.
