I would not even give them one star but there isn't a choice for that! I called about a refund I was to receive, but have NEVER gotten. I called them and dealt with a representative three times who did NOTHING to get my refund taken care of. Service here is over-the-top exceptional! I'm sharing this as a person with physical disability during the time I applied for DMV's Handicap Parking Placard (REG 195). I came with slight pain and with a visible cast on my left leg due to an achilles injury I suffered weeks ago. I also had a knee scooter to help me move around and to manage the pain. Place was packed but receptionist greeted me as to acknowledge my presence and after a good look at my situation, graciously offered that I sit close to the office area where there is more space for my foot to rest. I didn't wait too long either since the staff by the window took me in (making me go ahead of the line) perhaps understanding my physical situation. I was able to secure my application without a hitch and they explained everything in detail. Place was clean, organized and highly commendable! I was pleasantly surprised when someone from AAA called me a few days ago, while we were in SIP, to check up on how I was doing and whether I needed anything. That was so sweet of them! I also had to call for roadside assistance a few months ago (I had stupidly run out of gas) and the man who showed up (after only a few minutes) was great! I knew that AAA offered DMV services but didn't know if the location in Rockridge did so I was pleasantly surprised to walk in and find out that they did. The person at the front check in was great. Super helpful and kind. And the person who helped me at the counter was so understanding. He made renewing my registration super easy and painless. I never knew that you can renew your registration here at AAA. How convenient for working people like me who work throughout the weekday and dread going to DMV! My first time at this location was on 3/7/15 and I had only one more day left to renew my registration. I was freaking out because I knew that I had waited till the last minute and needed to get that taken care of immediately. I looked up on yelp for registration renew and up pops AAA!I was shaking my head thinking, "NO, AAA cant do registration renewals here. They only work on roadside service and insurance". I was so wrong! I called the number on Yelp but it wasn't a direct number going to AAA so I decided to take the nice drive and head to the office. I was SO happy to see that this location was near the 51st and 52nd freeway exit and in a nice friendly easy parking plaza! Did I mention that they are also open on a Saturday till 4P.M.? That is SO convenient!! I walked in and was greeted by a VERY handsome front desk man and a Security guard. I asked the front desk if I can pay my registration and he confirmed but please note: CASH OR CHECK ONLY! I arrived at 12:30 and was out by 1:15. It was only 2 people at the desk but I understand as it was the weekend. Parking wasn't bad at all! Plaza had many varieties of stores! Great location overall and amazing customer service! Just opened on Monday, August 23, 2010! It's located in a brand new building at the SE side of the shopping center on Pleasant Valley (near Gilbert) at the former site of the long defunct Emil Villa's BBQ. This office replaces the AAA office that was on MacArthur Blvd near Oakland Kaiser. It is a full service office with maps, travel services, insurance, AAA and DMV services! And it is open ALL day on Saturday. Hours are Mon through Sat 9am to 6pm! This not a review of this particular AAA office but AAA Insurance and Roadside Service in general. I've left my car keys in my car more times than I care to remember. One time, I did so with the engine still running, in my parking spot. Somehow, I've managed to limit these moments of idiocy to 3 times or less a year which is all the yearly fee covers. One time I got a flat on my birthday and someone was able to come out and change the tire in time for me to not be late to my own dinner. Should I know how to do this myself? Absolutely, but I didn't have the time to teach myself that night. More recently, I totaled my car. AAA towed my car to an auto body shop and then picked it up from there for evaluation. Once it was deemed a total loss, they very quickly told me what my car was valued at and sent me a check within 3-5 days. They also mailed me the FasTrak that I had left in the car. They then let me keep my rental for 2 weeks so I had time to figure out what I was going to do. Yes, technically I paid for all this with my premiums but it was nice not to have to push for everything I needed. The moral of the story is that I am glad I listened to the advice I got when I first got insurance: don't go with an insurance company that is going to nickel and dime you on every claim. My addition to that is: because car salesmen will take care of that part for you. read more

Just tried to get a simple International Drivers Permit. Went to the Oakland office, they said they were "out" of permits. They said the SF office had them. So, I went to the SF office. They said they were "out", and said Oakland just got a shipment back and I could go there. So, went back to Oakland. Filled out the application that clearly says "$15", and then waited in line for ~30 mins, only to be told their machine to take passport photos (Required for the permit) is broken, so I need to bring in my own photos. I go to Walgreens, and come back with my own photos, wait in line again, only to be told the permit actually costs $20 now (despite the application clearly stating $15), and then they had to pull in a manager since I'm not a AAA member (and nowhere does the permit, or the website say anything about being a AAA member). Basically, it's about as bad as the DMV, except that you don't HAVE to go to AAA. For an organization who's entire mission is around customer service, pretty poor job. read more

There's always folks milling about and chit, chatting with each other and then maybe getting around to helping customers when they've finished their non insurance / personal conversation. Eating food at their desk etc. But the woman at the window for services was exceptionally rude to me this last time. Tossed my card back to me. And when I left she goes "your welcome" snottilly. I'm trying to get passport photos and had them taken at the 41st St CVS with an old consumer-grade camera with flash disabled. Pics were shadowy, possibly underexposed and face too small. Price $17. A web search informed me that AAA provided them FREE to members! So, what's not to like. I called the Rockridge office first to confirm they were on board with that and a lady agreed. I then dressed up,drove to Rockridge, finally squeezed into one of their way-too-tight parking spaces and was greeted in the lobby and told that "THE EQUIPMENT IS BROKEN". "But, I wasn't told that when I called this morning" I said. 'It's been broken for a while", he replied'. "Well, I'll come back tomorrow", I said. "It won't be fixed then" he said. "Well, when will it be fixed?", I asked. "Maybe by Friday", he said. I was then given the address and phone of the Berkeley and Alameda AAA locations to try. He didn't offer to call either first but stated Alameda was up and running. It was like pulling teeth! AAA Alameda was a dream come true. Good professional grade camera with flash diffuser, lighted backdrop, quick print and courteousness in abundance. He showed me the pic to see if it was acceptable then wirelessly sent it to the printer. I left happy with a receipt for $0 and two nice pics. I've never been so frustrated as a AAA member than when as this office location. The DMV staff is not consistent with answers or help. I do not know their names, but all staff this day were women (not that gender has A THING to do with it, I'm just expressing who to blame that day if there are other male staff or female staff who were there, I'm sorry for throwing you in a fire, because this was a managers doing). I've tried to register my vehicle here 3 times, was told it was possible by one employee but needed to pay in cash (no problem id come back.) I come back the following business day, and a "manager" told me now that it was impossible due to paperwork she couldn't bypass. I explained that a fellow AAA DMV officer told me otherwise, and she said "well some staff can do things others cant." excuse me? I have a court date and this is important can we call that "knowledgeable" staff member for help? "No she wont come in for this." ... Um, I'm not asking her to come in... I just need my car registered, wouldn't a phone call suffice if she has the power to walk you through over the phone? Nope sorry, "aint gunna do it, come back when so and so is working they can do stuff we don't know to" (mind you this is all with aggressive body lang. and a Bluetooth headset on, arms crossed, are we 11?.) ...Uh huh, wow. I'm not trying to pick a fight... I just needed help, and this turned into a complete waste of time with an unprofessional "manager". So let me get this straight, All staff is not trained the same way or at least not held to the same standards, and ignorance and laziness is an excuse for why members cant be assisted? It's permitted to speak to clients in such an unprofessional manor? and further more... there is no attempt of any sort to aid long time members of AAA in serious need? What the hell? The misery of having to deal with DMV can absolutely tank you day. But thanks to AAA, as a member, I get to take advantage of their rock awesome DMV services. I needed new tags for my car, and the first time I went to DMV (the Oakland one near the 51st and Telegraph intersection), I got the run around. Yeah, they were surprisingly helpful, and the wait time was transparent, albeit long (40 min). In the end, however, I was told I had to get a smog check and when I came back I would have to go through the entire DMV line once again. At the recommendation of the great smog check service I went to, I headed over to AAA instead of DMV, and got this place: 380 MacArthur. Thumbs up the moment I pulled into the parking lot. Even though it was in the middle of downtown Oakland where parking is nigh impossible, there's a spacious parking lot in the back with plenty of spaces open. I pulled in, and didn't walk into a stuffy, tiny office. This AAA is spacious, w/ plenty of insurance help folks at their desks, people laughing as they walked by one another's desks and answering the phones, and what I was looking for: a DMV desk. There was only one guy working the DMV teller station when I got there, but when the line became 5 people, another teller opened up a second window. I waited about 10 minutes, and then when I got to the window, had a 5 minute conversation, "I need 2010 tags for my car, here's the smog check paperwork... thank you. Really? No, I didn't know there was an outstanding ticket on my car. I can take care of it here? That's great--not that I got a ticket, but that I can take care of it here. One check for both is fine? Thanks. Here you go, great. Yeah, you have a nice day too." About as painless as you can get for a government agency transaction. AAA: you rock. read more

Who here actually enjoys waiting in line at the DMV? Not I! So when I found out I could use this place instead of the regular DMV I was excited. I waited in line for 5 minutes. FIVE FREAKING MINUTES! In the past I've had to wait as long as an hour at the DMV with the constant fear of them calling my number when I was in the bathroom. But not here! Service was also no nonsense and straight to the point. I came here because I got a parking citation for missing tags. Oakland wanted me to pay a huge $$$$ for the fine but the DMV clerk told me how I could get the fine reduced to the price of a sandwhich instead of the price of a dinner at a 3 star restaurant. The people here care about your well being and if you're us to the regular DMV service you'll be shocked at the efficiency of this place. read more

AAA hooks me up with discounts on rental cars, hotels, and better still- FREE maps and travel guides. I like to research and map-read before traveling anywhere and all I have to do is drive here, park (there's tons of parking), whip out my AAA card and tell them where I'm going. They look up what travel books and maps I might need, I get what I want, and I leave super happy. read more

I've been a AAA customer for more than a decade and I can say they are one of the best insurance companies around. Not only is their service superior, but if you get into an accident they make the claims process as painless as possible. Additionally, this office is a new modern building so it makes taking care of insurance related matters more tolerable. The other reason I love AAA is because of their in-office DMV. When was the last time you went to a government DMV office?? Its a horrible experience with incompetent people at the helm. AAA's DMV is the opposite. The lines are short, the people helpful, and the environment new and clean. I had to pay the registration on my vehicle on a Saturday and I was in and out in less than 5 minutes. The DMV is not even open on Saturdays and if it were, it would take more than an hour to get the same thing done after waiting in several lines and waiting for my number to be called. Forget Geico and those other lame insurance companies, AAA is the way to go. read more

Worse than DMV. This must be the worst AAA in the country. The guy could not even except a smog certificate to complete a title transfer that was already paid for and ready to go. He had an issue with the dates being off next to the signature (by a few days), saying newer cars need to have the same dates. Complete bs. I was never made to feel like a member who pays these people's salaries, yet alone a plus member. They better wise up and realize why they exist. I had three different people at this location and they were all worse than DMV employees. Once I was told they were closed 10m before 6p. The other time the lady did not know how to deal with a gifted vehicle and made a huge deal about it. The customer service here is lacking. Again, WE pay for this service! note: The potrero hill AAA location is awesome! Never an issue in near 10 years. Unfortunately, I now work in the East Bay and cannot make it there during the week. This review is for their travel services or better put their lack of a well staffed travel department. I made 2 requests to this department - one of which was pretty cookie cutter 3 day disney trip and the other a bit more complicated caribbean vacation. It's been 6 weeks and I still haven't seen a proposed itinerary on the caribbean trip so I'm pretty sure they just blew that one off. I did get a Disney vacation quote which was 20% higher than what I eventually booked myself. Beyond the poor responsiveness, the quality of service was actually pretty bad. Very few questions were asked about what we're looking for other than a few very basic questions. The agent jumped right into recommendations for hotels we had 0 interest in kept pushing what is likely a list of "preferred properties". I can't think of a scenario where I would recommend their travel department. You'll likely get a better deal if you do it your self and you'll at least get a response. Their DMV department gets 5 stars..they're awesome but that's another review. I purchased a pre-owned vehicle and had a little trouble getting the title from the seller, the DMV mailed it to an address without a unit number so the post office returned it undeliverable. So there were a couple of extra forms that needed to be completed. The seller told me to use AAA in Oakland that it was closer and more convenient. So off I go.... Good points: The office is clean, parking is great, they do actually perform DMV services and it's pretty convenient. Bad points: "Clarence" who works in the DMV section (or was today during my visit). He's got the personality of a rock and only speaks or responds once a customer forces him to acknowledge them. He's a waste of energy and needs to learn some basic customer service skills, starting with "Hi there, how can we help you". I'll use this AAA office but with the understanding that some of the staff just aren't real excited to assist. Too bad, it's so easy to do. read more

People say that CSAA is very expensive and I do agree. If you compare the low costs of the other insurance carriers to the high costs of CSAA the differences are good products, services, quality and excellent customer service. While the others are less expensive they are shabby in all of these things. There is NO comparison. I have truly enjoyed the quality of CSAA products from roadside (including discounts and travel) and auto to home/renter insurance and have faithfully used them all; even if I leave CSAA I always come back. Some of CSAA's services like roadside takes a little longer than usual these days with so many people having auto issues but I can still say that I recommend them. First, I want to say that people have been generally helpful in the past. But they have given me wrong information on three separate occasions over the last three months about what balance I have due on my auto insurance - and now there are finance fees and a cancellation notice! I am unable to access my billing information online (it consistently gives me an error that it is unable to retrieve the information), so I have to reply on the live humans in the office, but they have been wrong 3 times in a row. The travel department was extremely unhelpful! I WILL NEVER, EVER GO TO THIS OFFICE AGAIN. I have a confirmed reservation (via email) that says "AAA Travel" and says if I need to change my reservation to contact my "AAA Travel Professional". When I went in to this office, they said I don't have a reservation and almost yelled at me - I was afraid to stay in the person's office and afraid to leave (and I am not a timid person). I was able to take care of canceling one day of my hotel reservation myself. read more

I inherited AAA insurance for my car, but I'm glad I did. They are WAY too big of an organization to characterize, but I love them for the following: a) Historical design, creation, and low priced MAPS (if only they had the forsight to jump them to the net, then they would have been bigger than Navteq-Nokia; that shameless bastion of thieves, along with Google, stole their years of work). b) This Oakland location, and their staff, (and organizational skills) I've seen before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qybUFnY7Y8w c) Honest, quick, and generous recovery for insured items (that I wrecked!). d) Tow/ battery services - that I've never needed, but nice to have on a back road going towards Vegas on a Friday night. I'm unhappy with their: Website (which is sometimes down for DAYS). Personal 'reps' they assigned to me, that NEVER return my calls. Really lousy rates when it comes to insuring motorcycles. I think of all the insurance companies behaving like pistons on an engine: sometimes one insurers rates are really low, they slowly go up, while another insurer's rates go down. I prefer the rock solid (but OLD SCHOOL) AAA, neither cheap nor high - but most excellent when you need them. read more

Convenience on W. Macarthur has a new name, and it's NOT the "Lucky Stiff Motel" for crack and crack-whores, either. For under $50/year, AAA at this location provides most of the DMV services that I need: auto registration (ie: title, plates, transfer, etc.) plus your traditional AAA roadside services. Pick up a map or 2 and travel route advice while you're here. And no waiting hours on end among the likes of the sketchier demographics of greater Oakland at the DMV's Claremont location.
