I went with my girl friend because she wanted some running shoes. She was a little nervous because she had never been fitted before, but Hailey Anderson and her trainee Danielle were the two sweetest and friendliest people we have ever met. This was my 2nd time here and my BFs 3rd. He needed new workout shoes so of course we are gonna come here. We considered going to the Fountain Valley store. I'll get to that. Our past experiences at the Brea store have always been pleasant. We walked in and we're giggling about something, and we were acknowledged right away. My BF said what he was looking for, made is clear he was not "married" to a particular brand. Now normally they will come out with a pair of shoes , make you run/walk on treadmill. Sales person did that. But honestly, it all seemed a bother to him. Weird. BF wanted to see more selections. So he went back, brought out some more. He seemed bothered again. At this point WE were a little bothered, by his demeanor. He did suggest some options, but all of his suggestions, they didn't have his size. They could "order". Blah! Don't suggest then! I had on the pair that I got a little over a year ago from this store. I strictly use them for the gym, running, etc. I did try on the updated version of mine too, which happened to be on sale. Now if you have never been shopping here, the best way to do it is DON'T look at the price. It boils down to how it feels on your feet. My particular shoe is NOT the top of the line from this brand, I did try the Top last time, and it didn't feel that great on my feet. So I opted for the next one, which felt great, which were the next class down. Not knowing, and still not knowing that until it was pointed out to me yesterday. Kinda made me feel "less". Honestly, I really DGAF, but the sales guy tone when he said it. I wanted to say F off. Whatever. We spent a good 30 to 40 min in there. My BF was getting impatient with this guy. He wanted to try on shoes, see what worked, what felt good on his feet. This sales guy was just off yesterday. I think we were bothering him at work. We ended up purchasing 2 pairs, $200+ later. Just a weird experience yesterday. Not like the first couple times, and I refer a lot of friends to go here. This is from the perspective of a parent of a cross country runner. When my child needed cross country flats we came to Snail's Pace. The store was very busy and we were instructed to get a ticket. 15-20 minutes later, we were helped. For flats, we were directed to a shelf with less than a dozen options. My impression was there was going to fit us for the shoes and analyze the gait, but apparently there is less decision making for flats: pick your style, pick your price. So in this case, the expertise of the salesperson was untapped. Fortunately, the price of competitive flats is not as insane as the training/running shoes. Don't be mistake into thinking you should go elsewhere. Neither the Nike Store nor Dick's off all places have flats. (I found out wasting 3 hours driving around.) A few months later we came here since my child was developing shin splits, so we needed better training shoes. This is when the knowledge base of their staff shines, as they are all experienced athletes. This time we had a detailed session including a treadmill run. For the amount of time and effort spent with us, I did not mind paying msrp. For my kids, I'll come here. For myself, I'll stick to Marshall's clearance. read more

I came here after years of hating running and a need to find a switch to that mentality. I've gained quite a few pounds in the past year and a half and some of it has to do with lack of cardio in my life. I thought if I can fix my gait with a comfortable shoe, I should be able to somewhat enjoy running. After speaking with a friend of mine he recommended A Snail's Pace Running Shop and I have to say it was one of the best, most personable experiences I've ever had in any retail shop. Design - 4 stars As soon as I walked in I could see it set up like any normal shoe store. Shoes were lined up on walls stating their names and prices. Other apparel was found within the open floor concept and a big chalkboard with races coming up was next to the cash register. Also there was a sensor for your feet that measures pressure and two treadmills in the corners. As there were already two workers helping a customer I stepped up to the cash register to see if someone could help me out. Service - 5 stars When the worker came out to help me she came out of a veiled curtain and walked into the room like a breath of beautiful, winter cool air. She was smiling and it made me smile with no effort. She said "hi" and asked how she could help me. I told her how I was looking to get some running shoes specifically for my feet. She asked me what distance I was looking to run with them and I said just 1 - 3 miles (I can barely do that). She took me over to the sensor which showed where the pressure was most on my feet (I found out I have high arches). Then she took my feet and measured them. I am not a foot person at all. I think they are gross. They smell, are used all day, and generally yucky so I am always reluctant to have anyone touch mine. But she didn't flinch. I felt like that moment from Beauty and the Beast where he sings, "And when we touched she didn't shudder at my paw!" From there she brought a pair of tester shoes and had me run the treadmill for a few seconds to see how my gait was. After finding out I have pronation during my run she went to the back to get me shoes specifically for my feet. She came out with three options and with each choice it made me realize I have a real chance to find just the right match for me. I felt like Goldilocks except without bears or beds. She was patient and helped me with every question until I was ready to choose my pair out. Price - 3 stars I have to warn you about the price. These shoes are all in the mid to high $100s. That means you can end up paying close to $200 for a pair of shoes but again, these shoes are specifically for your type of gait and running style so it makes sense. Just be prepared to get your socks knocked off if you've never experienced such prices for shoes...like me. Conclusion Honestly, the whole experience with this place was fantastic. I never once felt awkward or regretted my choices. They were patient, knowledgeable, and easy to talk to. They understood what I was looking for and helped me find it. It does help that the person helping me was beautiful but yes, it was a great experience. For all my future runners or those looking for more custom shoes for cardio I highly recommend A Snail's Pace. I really only wanted to get the insoles to add to my current shoe because my knee has been hurting and figured new insoles can do the trick. Truly exceptional experience thanks to Elliott. We came in seeking shoes for my two teenagers and he expertly diagnosed exactly what they needed and brought out several options. After the first pair for each, he listened closely to their feedback and recommended specific pairs--both of which were spot-on perfect. This young man KNOWS HIS STUFF. In addition, Elliott proved himself to be an employee who not only understands the technical aspects of his job, but provides exceptional customer service as well. He was kind enough to put on a mask upon request (my husband is a chemo patient so we are far more comfortable with masked indoor interactions regardless of vax status) and he treated my transgender child with utmost respect and dignity, including asking their pronouns. The staff here is super helpful. I 1st came in years ago for a pair of Vibrams. Then a few years later I decided to run the 2014 LA Marathon. I came in did a few tests and walked out with 2 pairs of shoes to train and run the marathon in. My feet felt great, I can't believe the difference you feel in a good pair of real running shoes vs a pair of Nike's. I usually go to Snail's Pace for my running needs and I've had mostly good experiences. Recently, though, things have seemed to go downhill. I'll start with the good. They had a pretty large selection of running, walking and trainer shoes. They have you go through a sort of diagnostics test to figure out which shoe is the best for your walking or running style. It's pretty thorough. To the bad... I came in to buy insoles for my shoes and it was pretty dead. I think there were maybe 3 employees working. Despite the lack of customers, the girl that helped me seemed less than enthusiastic about helping me; just sort of seemed to want me out the door as fast as possible. I dunno, maybe she was having a bad day... I recently went in because I wanted to buy some new running shoes for work. I walked in and was surprised that it was so busy on a Monday. An employee looked at me, mumbled 'hello' and continued to help his customer. I know they do a ticket system when it gets busy, so I looked around for a dispenser and couldn't find it, so I just browsed through the shoes and clothing. I noticed some people were checking out so I just sat down and waited....and waited. A girl walled in and was helped right away. Two more ladies came in and were helped. I was not even acknowledged by any of the employees... Oh wait... I was acknowledged, when an employee asked me to move a little so he could help his customer. At that point, I had just about had it. I had waited over 30 minutes and no one had told me they would help me as soon as possible or even acknowledged my presence. I wouldn't have minded waiting if someone had asked me what I was looking for, told me someone would be right with me, etc. You know, basic 'courtesy' stuff. read more

I have not experienced discrimination in Brea until today. DO NOT COME HERE if you are looking for honest and welcoming customer service. I will tell all my friends at my gym and everyone I know about my experience at this location. This place was highly recommended by my friends from my gym to get tested for proper fitting of shoes. Even the owner of my gym has taken a group here to discuss proper fitting of shoes. I thought, this should be great! When I walked in, there was only one other person standing in front of the register. I was greeted by Akina & told her I was interested in getting tested. She then asked if I planned on purchasing anything today. I thought it was an odd question as I have never been asked that when I walked into a store or even before I try on clothes/shoes/jewelry. I told her I didn't know because I don't know what shoes they have, the fit of the shoes, or the cost, etc. I am a first-time customer. She proceeded to explain the process of the testing & then asked me AGAIN if I planned on buying. Again, I told her I can't commit to buying if I don't know what they have & she said she needs to to talk to someone first. She comes back a few minutes later and we go through the initial test of me stepping on the platform and walking on the pad on the floor and she shows me on the screen what the computer came up with. Then she says that's as far as she can help me. I was like, "So you can't get me shoes to try on?" She said she might be able to get me a few but needed to ask her manager first. Now, I'm really thinking WTH is going on?? She comes back with a pair of shoes and puts them on and has me run on the treadmill so she can video me. I had also initially explained to her that Nikes were too narrow for my feet & before she had left to grab pairs of shoes for me to try, she mentioned that she could grab some Nikes for me to try. I'm like, WTH I just told her that Nikes were too narrow. While trying on the two pairs of shoes, a group of young ladies walk in say hi to Akina & they have a little convo on the side so it seems they are likely friends. I overhear Akina tell one of the young ladies that she is almost done & can get her tested. Akina didn't ask the young lady if she planned on buying before she was able to test her, so why was I asked not once but TWICE if I was gonna buy BEFORE I was tested & she had to ask her manager several times during the process before I could even try on shoes. How could I even trust I was fitted properly? I could only guess I was discriminated against as several of my friends from my gym (who are white) said they were assisted right away with no questions about buying. I was highly disappointed and hope this review reaches management to train their people on proper customer service etiquette and sends a message to customers who will not put up with racial discrimination. read more

This one not so much. Bought the nb vongo and I've ran maybe 3 miles in them and haven't touched them since. They really damaged my Achilles immediately after running in them. The Best Store for Running Shoes in OC I have big feet, and I am a size 14 shoe and it is very difficult finding good running shoes. Many manufacturers of gym shoes typically make a "narrow" width for many gym shoes, and I have "wide" feet. I have been coming to this store for the past few years and it is always a pleasure. They have great brands, accessories, shoe support inserts and running equipment. Even if you are not a serious runner, but have special needs for your gym shoes (large feet, orthotic inserts, you play different sports), then I recommend you come here. The staff is very friendly and accomodating, and they will bring you out 4-5 pairs of different shoes to help suit your needs. You try each shoe on and see how you walk, balance and run in each shoe. After trying on a few pairs, they give you their recommendations to best suit what you need for your running gear. Michelle was my sales associate and she found the perfect shoes and orthotics to suit my needs. They have a wide selection of brands including Brooks, Asics and Saucony. You know when you go to a mechanic and try to recreate with your mouth the sounds your problematic car is making? You: "Yeah, it's making this AROOROORUUUR noise when I try to start it and it goes all HAHGEHGEHGEHH afterwards." Mechanic trying not to laugh: "Hmmm. I don't think you need a new alternator, but your battery may need replacing. I'll check it out for you." The Snail's Pace peeps are almost the same as that wise mechanic, but instead of mimicking the sounds your feet make as you run, you actually just...run. Be prepared to do some light jogging. That means come wearing shorts and wear your current running shoes. I used to keep my feet away from New Balance as I found their shoes to be stuffy and more about support. The skinny college sales dude kept that in mind, but insisted that I should still give their latest and greatest a try. And after trying on others, I found out that NBs best fit my needs. I don't know how to end this review so I'll just finish by saying AROOROORUUUR and HAHGEHGEHGEHH again. read more

The awesomeness that is the Fleet Feet shop in San Francisco completely blows A Snail's Pace out of the water and then some. One of the many reasons I've chosen to live in San Francisco, I suppose. I came back to good ol' Southern California for the 4th of July weekend, and my mother was on a quest to find comfortable shoes. She'd been having some painful foot problems because she spent most of her younger years wearing excruciatingly high heels, and now when she does a lot of walking (i.e. on business trips), no shoe that she has seems to come close to being super comfortable. I told my mother that there are shops like Fleet Feet that measure your foot, test your walk and then recommend good shoes for your feet. The closest thing they have in OC is ASP, so we went there one morning. We walked in and were greeted a few minutes later by one of the sales guys. I told him what we were looking for, and fully expected him to tell us to sit and then measure and analyze my mother's feet. Nope. He seemed to not really know what he was doing and came back with a pair that was too small and way too narrow for my mother. He didn't ask her to model her walk either. Great. After a few more pairs and us having to TELL him stuff rather than him asking basic questions right off the bat, I told him to bring a pair of Mizunos for my mother, since our feet are a bit similar in shape, and those fit me really well and have been my main brand for running. Thankfully they fit her. When I went to ask for a pair for myself, they were out of my size for every single pair of Mizunos (there were 6 styles). I finally ended up trying a pair of Sauconys after telling him what kind of shoe I wanted. Lack of new styles and sizes + lack of knowledge on the sales end = No thank you, I will not be returning for running shoes here, nor will I be recommending ASP to anyone. Great above and beyond service! It's great to see customer service in a shoe store like the way it used to be. This was an overall great experience and Michael did a great job of appeasing my little beast ( the nugget). He brought out multiple pairs of shoes and had her sprinting around to make sure they were really what she wanted. I personally believe she just loved sprinting around the store. They had these devices that mapped out her feet and he watched her as she tried each pair to check how her ankle positioning was. Just WOW is what I have to say to that service. Needless to say she was happy and did a little jig in the store with a new pair of shoes that she wound up not even getting. Apparently the last pair Michael brought out were the ones she loved. I have been having some trouble with my leg muscles, the area between my calf and achilles heel to be exact, while training for an 8k run. By the advice of friends they suggested I check out A Snails Pace. The staff may not be of the medical profession, but they are quite knowledgeable when it comes to the technical stuff like shoes, gear, etc. The store was bustling for a Tuesday night and the staff was busy juggling a handful of customers. However, they were great at acknowledging me, remembering my presence, and continuing their efforts to retain me as a customer. About 5 minutes later someone was free to assist me. First, he asked general questions about what I was looking for, why I was there, etc. I told him about my problem and he recommended evaluating my running form. I put on some shoes and ran back and forth down the aisle for him. He said I was neutral (yay! I think that's a good thing). He recommended some shoes that might help alleviate the problem, but never pressured me to buy anything. Don't expect to see those trendy Nike Air Max 360 or Adidas whatever. Their stock mainly consists of OG running shoes like Asics, Saucony, Mizuno, New Balance, and some other brands. For you Nike-heads they do have them, but they're Air Pegasus... dang, old skool~ I love it! I checked out the running gear, but $80 for a windbreaker was a little too steep for me, no matter how cute it was (black/pink with reflectors at the pockets and slim fit) :o( awwww. I ended up leaving with a pair of heel inserts for $6.95. I'm going to try them out and see if they help. I also overheard another employee telling her customer that High School students get 10% off and a free license plate frame. At first I was intimidated to enter the store because there was a gaggle of runners hanging around the front door (I guess it's a meeting place?). But I was pleasantly surprised by their friendliness, knowledge, and willingness to help. If you want to go to a place to do some research before you invest in a good pair of running shoes, this is the place to go. No pressure, only great service! read more

Amazing! Wish I could give 6 stars. I've been going back and forth online not exactly knowing what would be the best fit for me, there are so many options out there. I was recommended to A Snail's Pace by my best friend- she is always saying really great things about it. I train boot camp classes 3-4x a week and been in the market for some good shoes. I had the pleasure of having Chris assisting me. He was very kind, patient, listened to what I was looking for, and brought multiple brand options for me to try on. He had me step on a foot scanner which measured the length, width, arch, and listed some other cool specs (I've been wearing the wrong size my whole life!!). He then brought out a pair of shoes for me try on and recorded my walking pattern on the treadmill to see how/where my foot landed and if I needed a different type of shoe for ankle support.
