Wow, I finally got to try 900 Grayson and I can't believe it's taken me this long lol. I came here on a Saturday for brunch around 12pm and there were people waiting outside trying to get a table. We were expecting a pretty long wait, but we were seated in a good amount of time. The inside was quite small and crowded and I feel like I was brushing up against the people sitting behind me. I got the Demon Lover chicken and waffles with a side of syrup and gravy. Those were the best chicken and waffles I've ever had!!! The syrup and gravy paired so well with the waffles and it just melts in your mouth! It was very filling too, with a good amount of chicken on the plate. It was so good that I drove 30min back here the week after to pick up a to-go order, so my bf could try it lol. I would come back here more often, but I'm not a morning person, and they close at 2pm. I believe on weekdays breakfast is from 8am-10:45am and on Saturday breakfast is served all day in addition to their other lunch items. read more

It's weird seeing this restaurant listed as a burger place. According to their website, they only have one burger and it's not served on weekdays. 900 Grayson was a staple for us pre-pandemic. We were excited to come back and see how the restaurant was doing. Started with two orders of the Demon Lover - one with gravy on the side, the other with syrup on the side. We could probably go two syrups and one gravy as we like the syrup can go on anything, but the gravy is for chicken only. Gravy touching the waffle is a party foul. Unfortunately, they only offer the much less tasty / juicy white meat version now. 900 Grayson owners - if you're reading this - I'm assuming most of your patrons prefer white meat, but maybe there can be Chicken Thigh Thursdays? The second was Potter Creek. Really nicely done hash browns with some scrambled eggs and toast. The last dish we ordered was the Tom Boy. It's a large portion of country style potatoes, corned beef, and 2 poached eggs on top. It's not like St. Patrick's Day Corned Beef though - it's corned beef cubes with a nice crispy exterior. A long overdue update. There are few places that are the same between pre- and post-pandemic. The crew at 900 Grayson are even better! For breakfast, the menu selection is still my ideal morning or mid-day meal if Saturday. The eggs are always absolutely perfect, the hashed browns crispy, the bacon so lovely and the homemade jam is to-die. The hot sauces are worth taking a bottle or two for home or gifting. If it is a Saturday though, I am sometimes tempted by the chef's sandwich (the pastrami is lovely) or the burger (which has bacon!). (Why haven't I had the demon lover recently? I had parking karma in the shade a block away on Seventh Street. We only walked about a block and 900 Grayson is located right on the corner of 7th and Grayson. I like this cozy ambience here and they have indoor and outdoor seating. From the outside, it looks like a little cozy house. We sat outside with a summer breeze which was refreshing under a big umbrella. My friend ordered, the Friday special clam chowder, the fried chicken sandwich with french fries and a lemonade. I had the Chopped Cobb Salad and changed the dressing to vinaigrette on the side. Unfortunately, my friend's sandwich was too spicy for him and he didn't realize it but he ate it. He wasn't happy with the clam chowder either and it looks like a small cup of sauce rather than a cup of soup. Maybe he selected the wrong items to try. I enjoyed my Chopped Cobb salad and it was refreshing with avocados, bits of bacon, chopped tomatoes and onions. It was A-OK. For dessert, my friend ordered a macaroon but for some reason, it was hard to break into pieces and not what he expected. Food is always amazing. Owner was a bit much with the attitude when we arrived when it opened for lunch and I simply asked if they still serve eggs. Not how he has usually greeted me in the past. I asked a simple question and was snapped at rudely. I love the eggs here and the chicken, but wasn't expecting to start my day off like that. Hope it was just a one off, but regardless, wasn't pleasant. I also run a business and understand that some days are harder than others, it can be difficult to maintain a cheery disposition on a daily basis. It'll be a while before I come back though. And everything just made the chicken and waffles that much more impressive. The dish is offered with a choice of maple syrup, housemade cream gravy, or both. Do not hesitate. Get both. This is my second time being here after a hiatus of several years. I thoroughly enjoyed the Tom Boy. Two poached eggs with homemade corned beef hash and toast. The corned beef hash was the best ever! I particularly liked those morsels with fat that were almost to die for. I can't get over how scrumptious it was. I guy like me has a big appetite and it didn't disappoint. Went here the other day with an aunt who lives a few blocks away... it was a cute neighborhood spot with friendly wait staff, tasty food, and a nice patio outside. There were four of us in total and we ordered their chicken sandwich, Caesar salad with salmon, Cobb salad, and their chefs sandwich of the day, which was a corned beef panini. No pictures, since I was busy in conversation with my aunt who I hadn't seen in ages! All entrees were tasty. I kept eyeing someone else's chicken sandwich, so ordered one to share along with their Caesar salad. The chicken in the sandwich was nice and crispy. The coleslaw had nice acidity, which helped. I will say though, I think they're known for their chicken and waffles which looked amazing!! I'm planning to try it next time! The salad was good too, salmon was cooked well.... I always remove the chicken pieces off of my waffle since the waffle gets soggy. It comes with gravy but if you want syrup, they charge an additional $2. Small, hipster breakfast spot in Berkeley! Met up with a dear friend to meet her baby boy for the first time and loved how accommodating the staff were to help her park her stroller near our table. 900 Grayson has been on my list of bookmarks for honestly as long as I can remember. I am SO glad I finally got to try this place! Located in an odd part of Berkeley that doesn't have much foot traffic, 900 Grayson is well known for their famous chicken and waffles. In addition to brunch, 900 Grayson also serves some burgers, sandwiches, salads, and even some intriguing Korean cocktails! The interior decor is a bit random with all sorts of wall art and paintings covering the walls. Theres some Golums from Lord of The Rings decor as well. There is quite a bit of free street parking available since this spot is located near a residential area. There are about 9-10 small indoor tables with a limited patio seating area outside. A good amount of shade covers the patio area so it can be nice to be outdoors and enjoy the weather. We came on a Saturday around 12:20 pm and only waited about 10 minutes for a table. I had high hopes for the Demon Lover which consists of fried chicken, buttermilk waffle, along with a rich gravy sauce or maple syrup. I opted for the gravy and surely did not regret my decision. First and foremost, this dish was absolutely fabulous through and through. The buttermilk waffle had such a soft, fluffy interior. You could really appreciate the buttery tone and spices. The waffle paired so nicely with the perfectly fried chicken. The chicken was still so crispy even under layers and layers of savory gravy. The dish together with the chicken and gravy reminded me of chicken fried steak but so much better. Chicken fried steak is often just overly battered and fried mush that lacks any depth in flavor. This fried chicken was incredibly juicy and seasoned perfectly. The Grayson Burger we ordered came out with a side of french fries which we thoroughly enjoyed with the gravy that comes with the Demon Lover. However, our patty came out really raw in the center so we sent it back to the kitchen. The waiter was really nice and took back the burger immediately. The burger we received was cooked medium and came out pretty nicely. The BBQ sauce was a bit empowering. It took over the flavors of the meat patty along with the fried onions. All I really tasted was the BBQ sauce and bacon. The acme bun was soft and fluffy but a little on the dry side. The burger would be better if the buns were toasted and warm and if the cheese was melted. Overall, it was a decent burger but I probably wouldn't order it again next time especially with its $15 price tag. The Demon Lover is probably the best chicken & waffles I've had and I think its well worth the drive for this dish alone. Service was really great and friendly. Got this with both the cream sauce and real maple syrup ( they served warm). This was super delicious. Tom boy: I love a good hash and this is good. The meat is in good sized chunks. A few (3 total) pieces had fat on them but easily removed. I like parsnips and this has parsnips. I'm going to preface that I didn't indulge in their more indulgent items: like their famous fried chicken. We went with a chopped Cobb salad and a Vietnamese noodle dish with tofu. And while good, it wasn't anything I'd write home about; neither dishes had a ton of flavor. Neither dishes were huge, but again prices were reasonable. The have expanded their outdoor seating, so just a few minute wait on a mid week lunch. Prices are reasonable, and waitstaff was quick and nice. This is a nice restaurant in West Berkeley. I have always meant to go over the years, so when I was in town last week I knew I had to stop by. Parking is limited in the area, but street parking was fairly easy to find on a weekday morning. Upon entering, we were immediately greeted. I want to emphasize that the staff were very friendly and attentive. They even knew some of the customers by name! The food was also promptly delivered to the table. I've been coming to this place for a good 5 years now. Best chicken and waffles you'll come across (I said it). The rest of the menu you'll have to venture on your own time but im specifically putting my name with the demon lover and service. Street parking is kinda scarce in the area but you'll find somewhere nearby. The ambiance is as Berkeley as it gets, kinda gives me a hippie vegan vibe but its not so I'll take it.. Back to the demon lover.. a soft delicious waffle is on the base with a crispy, juicy, soft and masterfully seasoned chicken breast is on top. You can literally cut the entire meal with a fork or spoon if you wanted, its so tender. You can choose between syrup or country gravy as a topping but for a few extra bones I'd recommend getting both. My secret is to pour all of the gravy on first, then the syrup and if you're a hot sauce kinda person.. they make their own in house hot sauces which I never pass up on. Many won't finish the meal in a sitting while others find it to be the perfect portion. There's a few things I've seen on the menu I'd like to try but honestly I'm in an addictive relationship with what I know to be a sure win. The establishment is reasonably priced as well, restroom for customers available. Im not 100% sure but I feel like when I first started coming here that somebody said the owner was one of the servers. Uhn uh. Just... no. Should I really even be calling this brunch if it wasn't even good?! I'm just gonna call it what it really was; a major disappointment. They don't take reservations, so we took our chances and met there around noonish in hopes of getting a table without a long wait. Lucky for us, the wait wasn't too long (well... It's a cozy spot that's nothing too fancy, but I still found out it to be cute and casual. Of course, we both had already looked over the menu prior to arriving. The Demon Lover was calling my name. Plus, it's a crowd fave and you know I have to get a taste of what the people are raving about. I ordered The Demon Lover and my friend got the Porter Creek. Our server asked me if I wanted gravy or syrup with the Demon Lover (chicken and waffles plate). I couldn't decide and he suggested that I try both. What irked me about this though was that he failed to mention that there was an upcharge for getting both. The price really wasn't the issue for me because I probably would have gotten both anyways. It's the principle. I just hate seeing surprises on the bill. A simple mention of this would have been greatly appreciated. But to me, this just seemed really sneaky. Also, the gravy... along with the rest of the meal was disappointing. First of all... the waffle was soggy AF. The chicken pieces that they used were flat chicken breasts that lacked in seasoning. They were terribly skimpy with the syrup, yet provided a large amount of gravy which was the worst of them all. Yeah, let's talk about it. That sh*t was not... NOT gravy. It tasted like a cold cheese dipping sauce and it wasn't good. Who da hell told these folks that this was gravy? Y'all need to get them tastebuds checked TODAY!!! It was nothing of the sort. Since the gravy was gross, I found myself only using the syrup. It was so tiny that I ended up asking for more. When I asked our server for more syrup he said "I'll have to charge you $2 extra for that". I looked down at the tiny ass syrup container, and then looked back up at him. I guess he knew that I wasn't feeling that answer so he responded with "We use REAL syrup here". ............ .................... ........................... .................................... I think steam started to come out of my ears. Do you think I give a f*ck if you're using "real" syrup?! You're already getting away with highway robbery by charging $2 for a spoonful of syrup. I know he saw that the gravy hadn't been touched. I mean, are y'all really that hard up for money? It's called common courtesy. At the time, I didn't even know that he had already charged me extra for that nasty ass gravy. I guess he felt obligated to actually TELL me that he would be charging for extra syrup too. Of course I refused. Why would I pay to add syrup to soggy ass waffles? Unbelievable. And don't even get me started on my friend's meal. Her hash browns were hard as a rock. I bet if I had thrown them through the window, the damn glass would have shattered. Hard AF! The crazy part is, they even looked overcooked when they got delivered. Why would the cooks, better yet the SERVER, deliver this sh*t to the table? And let's be honest, that was a plate that probably could have been cooked at home. It was so funny because I remember my friend saying "Well, the eggs and toast were good". Yeah, because who the hell f*cks up eggs, toast, and hash? It's a basic ass breakfast meal. I was ready to return the plate and ask for fresh one and it wasn't even my meal. But my friend was already over it. Oh yeah, and what service?! Homeboy never came back to take my friend's drink order (she was going to order a mimosa). Didn't see him until we had to ask for the check, and then when he saw that we were putting down cash and that we were about to leave, he just stood at the table until we walked away. Hmm... what's wrong with THAT picture?! I'm not even going to say anything else about that, but my real ones will already know what I'm talking about. But anyways, this is clearly just another overhyped Berkeley spot. Scratched it off my list and won't be returning. And by the way, this is definitely 1 star review content. Amazing place to have some breakfast! Saw a few friends visit this place and had an urge to give this place a try. I've never tried chicken and waffles but their Demon Lover was amazing. The bread crumbs that they use to coat their chicken is very tasty. The chicken itself was also very flavorful and not dry. My boyfriend got an omelet with gouda cheese - it was SOoOoo cheesy! Their hash browns are amazing and I thought their apple salad was very new and interesting! I also ordered a hot coco which wasn't too sweet, it was just right! I recommend this place, 10/10. Why did the chicken cross the road? Oh wait never mind.... it didn't get a chance to..... For the amount food you'll be getting it is definitely worth the price! 3 huge pieces of chicken!! The waffle was just ok, I've had better.. kinda soft and and soggy because of the gravy and chicken sitting on top. You have the option to have the gravy on the side or on top. They charge you $2 more if you want gravy AND maple syrup. Should have asked for maple syrup next time because I like eating my waffles with syrup for some sweetness. The gravy isn't overly amazing like others have mentioned but it was still decent. I felt like it was lacking in some umphhh or spice. Too bad I didn't end up adding some of their side hot sauces. My mistake. Employees were wearing masks. I just wished tables were spaced out more. I felt like the tables were still close to one another and the wind made me very uncomfortable when I didn't have my mask on. Service is just ok.. could be better. I got my food to-go because it was definitely filling and I couldn't finish it all. I wouldn't say I am IN LOVE with this place.. but it's decent. If I could rate out of 10, I would give it a 8/10. COBB SALAD: it's summer and am on a salad kick. So while working in our emeryville office ordered their Cobb salad to go. I arrived and it was pretty empty and social distancing is being practiced. Parking was easy street parking and I walked in and my order was ready . Paid and noticed their patio was open so I ended up eating in the lovely sunshine on the back patio. Salad was really good actually just the right amount too. Chopped Cobb Salad with chicken, avocado, cucumber, olives, double smoked applewood bacon, blue cheese vinaigrette, romaine, shaved egg and shoestring onion. I want to say I would definitely order this again! Hit the spot and I was unique and yummy twist to Cobb salad! read more
