So glad we stumbled upon this place. The staff is amazingly friendly. They serve breakfast and Costa Rican food. We traveled to Costa Rica many years ago and mostly stayed in a resort and we went on an excursion and had some local Costa Rican food. The food is simple, rice, beans, meat, onions, egg but when mixed together they are magical. This place was almost as good. Plantain was perfection. We ordered a Taylor ham egg and cheese sandwich for our 5 year old and he really enjoyed it. Decor is not fancy but you see bits and pieces of Costa Rica. I drive about a half hour to try this place. Saturday 12:30ish it just one table occupied. I was told I can seat anywhere, first impression big place, barstools, and very clean. The menu selection is ok lots of dishes and lots of combinations. Once I get the food it looked good and tasty until I tasted it.... Flavorless, old,it did not have flavor an all my partner same thing she had 3 bites and nothing more. I expected more of this place because the owner (Roy) had a good reputation of good restaurants but definitely not this one. I'm not sure if they have parking, I parked on the street luckily in front of the restaurant. 5 starts for the place clean and net. 3.5 for service the girl very nice but after bringing food out she forgot about us. 2 for the food and the 2 is for their portions. read more

I am local and have been eyeing this cafe for a while. Took my daughter here for a mommy/ daughter breakfast date. The owner was present, very nice and sweet towards her. There are lots of locals that come here to hang out and they say it's their daily spot. The food was not bad overall. I got a Costa Rican breakfast - the only negative was that the meat lacked flavor and honestly it did not taste fresh. I would try it again for a different meal, but don't know if I would come here regularly. read more

Always a nice experience coming to 506 cafe. A cold Friday night and we decided to go for a quick bite. I had the chicken club which was delicious. Chicken had lots of flavor and was cooked perfect. Sandra had the steak with onions a traditional Costa Rican dish. It was delicious. The conversation with the owner after dinner was the highlight. You always feel welcome and at home here. Very cool little diner in downtown pompton lakes. Was looking for lunch on thanksgiving day (celebration a diff day because of family timing) and couldn't find an open place. Came by and this was open so stopped in for lunch. It's a Costa Rican place with two sides of the menu - one CR food and TJ's other standard burger/wrap/wings type items. Was looking for a burger so went burger and fries although the arroz con pollo was a strong contender. Server was excellent, very friendly and seemed to be a local spot. Burger was excellent. They re-opened for pick service and I gave them 2 chances at making a simple breakfast. Both times it was terrible. Ask for well done home fries and both times they were just warmed over, not one tinge of browning. Had the sausages today and they clearly were not refrigerated during the power outage. you could smell the spoiled smell as soon as opening the container. Made the mistake of taking a bite and eating it, and realized they were clearly spoiled. Both times the toast is barely toasted and soggy. I feel sorry for these people, who seem nice, and tried to support them, but I will never go here again till the ownership changes for the 5th time in the last 10 years. read more

Tried 506 in Pompton Lakes for the first time today. A very clean and well set up place with nice Costa Rican decor. Yes, very clean including the bathroom which is important. I've gone to highly ranked diners that, well, were not clean at all .... a turnoff. The food: Just my first time so I can't comment yet on consistency but for what I see, I expect the food will be consistent. I ordered a custom omelet which was really good. Done exactly as I asked and generous fillings. Coffee good which to me is also important. Price, reasonable. The owner is nice and the service to match. I will be back and I recommend this place for cleanliness, food and service. read more

I have a new favorite diner to go to. The soup was good and definitely made from scratch. I ordered the breaded steak with a mushroom cream sauce, which was fantastic. I got it with mashed potatoes, and was happy to see that they were real as opposed to the instant stuff I find in a lot of other places. Even the veggies were sautéed before being plated. So many other places just steam them and do it half-way. The service was on point, they couldn't be sweeter or more attentive. I'm happy to see this place is just as great as when it was the PL Diner all those years ago... Cafe 506 is a big step up from the previous TVL. The decor is modern and simple. Ordered take out from here yesterday and was pleasantly surprised! I love Costa Rican cuisine and it definitely brought me back to being in Costa Rica and going to a Soda for lunch. I had Casado de pollo e pan izado (chicken cutlet) and my husband had Casado de bistec encebollado (steak and onions). Food was delicious and portions where huge. Tried this diner tonight after seeing a friends' recommendation. We really enjoyed it. It's a diner that also has Costa Rican food. I had Arroz Cantones which was flavored rice with pieces of various meats including shrimp and seasoned with cilantro. The plate also had delicious fries and a salad course in which I got a tasty little bowl of pasta shells with tuna. My dinner companion had Casado con Pollo a la Plancha which was two large grilled pieces of chicken, rice, black beans and plantains also with salad. We both really enjoyed our dinners. The portions are fairly large and the prices seem fair. We followed with a good and inexpensive dessert and coffee. The waitress/owner, Maureen, was super nice and very hospitable.
