One of my favorite restaurants. Great food, great service and very warm and cozy inside. In the summer love to eat under the trees.

Even with the GPS, it's easy to miss this place. In the middle of a residential section of Wanaque, Tree Tavern appears to be a restaurant masquerading as a house. There's a small bar on one side of the restaurant with some TVs for the local crowd. The place was busy on a Saturday night. We ordered takeout and I opted to go with the cavatelli with broccoli with shrimp. When we paid for the meal, the price we were charged didn't match that of the website. One of the managers showed us there were two menus on the website but was willing to honor the lower price. The meal was OK. There were a decent amount of shrimp and they were of good size. I didn't love the taste of the pasta. The bread that came with the meal was average at best. If I could give an honest review, this place would get 3.5 stars. I would try this place again but probably wouldn't go out of my way. read more

We absolutely love this place, from the food, to the cozy atmosphere, to the friendly staff and excellent service. It's perfect whether you're here on a date, or for a meal with family or friends. If you don't want a full sit-down meal, you can always find a convivial gathering around the happenin' bar. The menu consists of popular Italian and American favorites like chicken, veal, pastas, salads, steak, seafood, burgers/sandwiches, and a well-rounded selection of appetizers. Nothing trendy but all extremely solid options and consummately prepared. You're greeted with a plate of warm bread and black olives when you sit down. The house wines are quite good and a gracious pour. (A wine shop attached to the restaurant is run by the same people.) The steak is perfection - flawlessly seared to my requested medium rare, and seasoned just right. I've also really enjoyed the fish and chicken dishes here. The tilapia is so tender. Even the sides are outstanding - I couldn't believe how good the sauteed spinach in the chicken saltimbocca was! And the fries are amazing - piping hot and crispy, and perfectly seasoned as well. We've also had the seafood paella which is full of seafood but more of a cioppino with its tomato-based broth than a true paella which has a dry texture, but is tasty nonetheless. We'll be back often to eat our way through the rest of the menu, I'm sure. A happy hour menu is offered from 4-6p on Tue/Wed/Thu. As mentioned, they have a great bar, and the changing seasonal cocktail offerings are delightful. The staff are warm and wonderful, and we were made to feel welcomed each time. Mike the owner came up to introduce himself the very first time we came here. You can tell they take care to know their customers, and seem to have a loyal local clientele (one of whom recommended the Tavern to us). Our meal was perfectly coursed - never rushed nor too slow. I noticed our server discreetly checking on us several times to make sure we were done with our appetizers before the entrees were brought out in impeccable timing. A small table lamp illuminates the menu without harshing the romantic mellow. The unobtrusive noise level means you can actually have a conversation without shouting across the table. These are details, but the sum of these parts differentiates a good restaurant experience from a great one. read more

What a gem!! One might assume, driving by Tree Tavern, that they are looking at a run of the mill residence. This couldn't be further from the truth. Inside this inconspicuous residence, you'll find a full service bar and many tables, small and large. And the food? The food! I ordered the chicken Parmesan, and my esteemed date ordered the short rib ravioli. Both were high on flavor, and low on disappointment... I can't say enough about tree tavern. This restaurant is in a residential area of Wanaque, which is in the middle of nowhere. You can't stumble into this one accidentally, but it's worth the drive. They serve good comfort food. I haven't had disappointing menu items, but this place is known for its wine cellar, selection, and price. I occasionally get their cocktails, which are also good. Talk about unexpected. This TT is located in the middle of a residential area, so pay attention to the sign in front when you come for the first time. Came here for dinner where my wife had a small pizza with a salad. TT has their own frozen pizza that can be found in food markets all over. This pizza was very good and I don't think it was a frozen pie although it did have that look. I had a jalapeno burger with a salad... also very good. The mussels we started off with had an amazing sauce and would have almost made a meal in itself with a bit more bread... which too was excellent. But what made this place special (besides a nice bottle of Pinot Noir) was Laurie, who provided such excellent service... as well as making us feel welcomed in 'her' restaurant. Wonderful.. just wonderful. My boyfriend and I sat outside and the setting was amazing with lighting and music. Very romantic. I had the chicken Marsala and he had the short rib ravioli. Unexpectedly Surprised! Excellent! A hidden gem, and when I say hidden, it's definitely hidden. Way off the beaten path, in a residential area behind a house. When we pulled in we debated whether to try it or not. We decided to try it and we highly recommend this place. We sat in the outside seating area in the back. The service, food, ambiance and hospitality were all excellent. My wife had the crab, Mac n cheese, large portion and delicious. I had the filet minion sandwich, extremely tender and delicious. My friends and I spent a great evening at the Tree Tavern. They were very accommodating when I initially called for our group of 12 and when we walked in, they had our table waiting for us. They have a nice cocktail menu, and although the beer list was small, it had a little bit of everything. I know it's not easy to handle a large table,but our server was awesome. She handled us and all our questions easily. The menu is large and everyone seemed happy with their meals. The decor inside was really nice, and it is much larger than it appears from the outside. Hubby and I came here one night after a random search for steaks and BOY were we HAPPY!!! This place is a gem tucked away in a little neighborhood (truly we thought we were going to someone's house!). The food was FANTASTIC, the bartenders and staff were extremely helpful, and we felt right at home. For appetizers, he had the bruschetta and I had the burrata (both were delicious, but the tomato's were Jersey fresh!!). For dinner, he had the Short Rib Ravioli and I had the Filet Mignon over toast points (so so so fresh and flavorful!). We will definitely be back (and not on a random search!). This is actually my 5th time here and it just keeps getting better. The staff is awesome and very accommodating to any request. We wanted mussels for an appetizer but they only serve it as a full order over pasta. We asked for an appetizer portion not over pasta and they did just that for us. Boy am I glad they did. The mussel sauce is absolutely one of the best I have ever had. It's a must try if you go. Sandra had veal saltimbocca that was fantastic. Susie had crab and shrimp Mac and cheese-yup you read that right. Omg delicious and juli had the strip steak that was cooked to perfection. This place is definitely becoming our go to place. My first time and very pleased except service was a bit slow. Waitress could have used more help. Ordered the fried calamari with thai sauce. Very good. I like the fact that they serve the tentacles. The spinach and artichoke dip app was also good, but it was served with crackers NOT pitas chips like the menu states. Brie burger was tasty and cooked to perfection. The lamb tasted like the dead sea. So salty! Don't come here if you have high blood pressure. Also , The prices listed on the website are far lower than the actual prices they charge you. Just went there with a friend & the food was delish!!! We had the chicken empanadas & the salmon burgers with a salad! ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! In my opinion, salmon burgers usually have way too much breading...theirs did not! The atmosphere was cozy & beautiful outside! Although they we didn't have reservations & they said we had to sit by the outdoor bar (although no one filled the other tables!), we didn't mind... If you love good wine you will love this hidden gem. Tucked between two houses on a quite street is this hometown bar and restaurant. The food is very good with some chef choice specials each week. The wine selection is extraordinarily good and Mike the owner is very knowledgeable. Ask him about the wine cellar, he is so proud of. Lots of unique spirits behind the bar as well. Tree Tavern is one of my absolute favorite places to go, not only to have some fantastic wine but to also have excellent food as well. The first time I went here, Mike (the owner) took extra time with my friend and I to make sure we liked the wine that he was suggesting to us and even went so far as to give us a personal tour of his exceptional wine cellar. Safe to say that the service was fantastic. The bartender is very nice and welcoming too, always attentive and gregarious. What makes Tree Tavern so special is the wine selection - not only does Mike have an extraordinary breadth of wine, but his prices simply CANNOT be beat. Now as we all know, the standard restaurant markup for a bottle of wine is anywhere from 50-200%, of course, depending on the wine and location, etc...NOT THE CASE HERE! One of my absolute favorite Chardonnay's is normally $27-$29 in the liquor stores; Mike has it for $35. Another favorite Malbec of mine is around $23 in the stores and he has it for $30. Those are just absolutely killer prices!!! And the food? FANTASTIC. Anyone who complains about the food here is simply out of their mind. Everything that I've had here has been fresh, high quality and of a tremendous value. Bravo, Mike! You have made us customers for life. Thanks for such a great experience! read more
