Fountain soda has the usual suspects, plus red birch beer which I had to get since you don't see it everywhere! Fries were hot and super crispy, with a nice soft fluffy interior. The hot dogs reminded me of other places in the area--think the Hot Grill in Clifton. Two make a good lunch. I'd definitely return to try more of the menu. read more

I feel transported to the 1950s coming here - there's even a drive thru! The Lantern keeps a delightfully vintage menu and aesthetics - serving up old-fashioned hotdogs, burgers, milkshakes, egg cream(!), fries, sandwiches, wraps, ice cream, breakfast foods and more - but not in any kind of intentional hipsterish way...which makes it authentically hip in my book. Their signature item is the hot Texas weiner. Now a Texas weiner ain't like any other chili dog. It's a fried hot dog, topped with a special spiced meat chili sauce (no beans), which you can and should get dressed "all the way," with chili, onions, and mustard. And btw it's not a Texas thing; it's a New Jersey thing...by way of Greece. The chili sauce on a Texas weiner is particular (and not to be confused with your standard-issue chili con carne), and the taste can be divisive. Some people love it; others like my husband didn't care for the chili or the flavor of the dog. It's one of those things, IYKYK I guess. I for one did enjoy my weiner. And my roast beef club and tater tots w/ cheese both hit the spot. It's simple and straightforward food, nothing fancy. I can get with the back-to-basics-ness of the joint which fits with the theme. This should be an irresistible destination for any road trippers and curiosity food seekers. There is ample seating inside, with two dining sections. And the people who work here are nice. The older lady who took our order was so sweet to put cartoons on the TV for my toddler. Probably 3-3.5 on the food, but bumping to 4 for the kitschy charm, good value, and kind service. I had the hot dog with Chili. 3 hours later the I was vomiting. Definitely food poisoning.

We had a craving for a few dogs and a cheeseburger and fries so here we are. Service is always friendly and prompt and the chili sauce is loaded with flavor. I love the shakes as well. For quality and quantity the prices are very reasonable. They menu is large and consists of lots of choices not only dogs and burgers. We will definitely be back for another dog and a shake. First off, I only got one of two steak sandwiches I ordered, but once I saw the one I got I was glad there was only one and door dash credited me for the missing sandwich. Hardly any steak and nothing else. No choose. No onions. Just dry thin meat on a roll. Major things down for $13. The chicken souvlaki was pretty good, as were the onion rings. Tater tots were ok. Sometimes I'm amazed that Wifey puts up with my long-term pursuit of good hot dog joints in Jersey, but it's even better when she joins in on the deliciousness. We were heading up into NY from North Jersey and we decided to try The Lantern. I'd heard good things about the place and it's a place that seems like an institution. We were in a bit of a hurry so we kept it simple - Wifey had one with kraut and mustard and I had one all the way (chili sauce, mustard and onions) and one with just chili sauce. We also ordered fries and a couple bottles of water for $15 Wifey was very happy and thought it was a perfect dog for her. I liked the dogs (they told me they were Sabrett's-seemed like a pork/beef blend, but what do I know) and the chili sauce was pretty tasty for a Texas Weiner style chili sauce. The fries are pretty standard, frozen then fried...they did come out well done though, so that's a bonus. Overall a pretty good stop...good enough that I'd like to come back and try their disco fries and a milkshake...or maybe even breakfast. read more

I've been coming here ever since I was a kid and maybe because I never dealt with the workers myself, I've never had a problem. My boyfriend and I went through the drive through and he was trying to order as she was quickly trying to speak over him and explain what he was ordering wasn't correct. We get to the window and right away she takes the card and does not give him a second to reach back for the card, so instead the girl with the short black hair and piercings started waving his card outside of the drive through window. Mind you, no one else was behind us so I'm curious as to what the rush was. She just seemed very unpleasant and as someone who has worked in this industry I have learned if you aren't happy working there, you find another job. On a positive note, the food itself is always enjoyable, sometimes not the portion size..especially when you pay a good amount of money for it. There is also an older woman with blonde hair who normally I see everytime i go and she is always so sweet! This business could use some happier faces like hers and maybe they would reach a bigger crowd again. I used to buy lunch weekly there. And the service got so bad to the point that I got so disrespected by the person who takes the orders ( which by the way had no manners) to the owner himself. The person who I had in the car with me was shocked by the way they were talking behind my back. I could hear their conversation through the pick up window. Please do better!! I agree with others that this is probably a place that has been around forever, and some of the appeal is the nostalgia of going back to a place you went as a teen. Stopped by for a quick lunch when I was in the area, first time. As with all hot dog joints I got 2 all the way and fries. If you are a fan of Hot Grill you will like these dogs but I find that chili is a little sweet, which I don't love. Much prefer the chili sauce at McCobbs. Fries were great, prices reasonable. They have a pickle bar which was also great. One odd thing is they use Styrofoam plates so when my fries came it was clear they were dropped with hot oil on the plate, melting the plate in a few spots. Probably not great for me or the fries. All in all a solid place, wouldnt travel for it but if I am in the area would revisit. read more

This place is the kind of place to stop by on a highway when you are starving. If you that hungry, you could rate this a bit higher than two stars. But if you really want to come here for a delicious burger, you might be better off going to the burger king down the road. I usually don't get the best food here. The burgers are thin, the soups are chunky, and the philly cheese stakes are not my style. But on the bright side, the lantern offers a wide selection of food and even ice cream( the Ice Cream is the best thing here). It's also nice that there's an outdoor seating and drive-thru option. So The Lantern is not the worst, but don't come here for astonishing food. read more

my boyfriend and i have been coming here for years and now we never know what to expect every time we go. Between the two young blond girls who are extremely rude and make you feel rushed while ordering by giving attitude and cutting you off by saying "anything else" and the inconsistency of the meals we get, it doesn't seem worth it to make a stop here anymore. My family and I love this place!! We go here at least once a week, and their Reuben sandwiches are to die for!! So delicious!! Their burgers are always juicy, their french fries are spot on, and the calamari and chicken fingers are two of our other favorite foods here. Came in for a burger and disco fries with my boyfriend. Now I write this review knowing that this is a "greasy spoon" type joint but the food just wasn't good. Simple place to catch a meal. They have a decent amount of ice cream selection and they'll make a milkshake for you in any flavor. However, if you want a milkshake that's not just vanilla or chocolate, you have to get a large but it's still under five dollars. This place offers your regular sandwich selections. No-frills, just simple food. I had a tuna melt. Comes with tomato and cheese. Very filling, nothing amazingly good though. I do recommend this place for a quick sit down meal though. read more

There were tons of items on the menu. And I mean ALOT. I tried a couple of things. I had a hot dog with chili and fries to be exact. It was pretty darn fast. The hot dog was slightly undercooked and some of the skin was coming off. The chili was pretty good but also a little liquidy on 1 side but on the other side it was so thick! *dats wat she said* on a lesser note the fries were de ecent and had not to much patato in it. We are in dire search of trying to find a good hot dog place so with a craving for one and a search through yelp...The Lantern presented itself with 4 1/2 stars. Unfortunately, the place couldn't present much more than its overly hyped reviews. The menu and quality of food was reminiscent of a High School football game. The prices matched for a high school allowance too, so maybe that was the theme. The only other patrons were over 60 years old which I can only contribute that they were there to obtain a nostalgic memory since the interior seemed to be as old as they were. Several times while passing through town I saw this place and thought I should stop. Today I was in the area and decided it would be a good dinner. Went inside and was surprised by how many different things they had to offer. You took several minutes to make a decision. The staff was very friendly and helpful. One of the items I ordered was a cheeseburger and I was surprised when they asked me how I would like it cooked. Haven't had that happen in a very long time. Great food. We got the hot Texas wiener, gravy fries, disco fries, roast beef sandwich, and ice cream. I highly recommend them all. If you like gravy fries go ahead and get the disco fries (adding mozzarella cheese). We are visiting the area and I had never had or heard of a hot Texas wiener. I'm not really a chili dog person but this chili sauce is amazing! Prices are reasonable and staff was friendly.
