We are in dire search of trying to find a good hot dog place so with a craving for one and a search through yelp...The Lantern presented itself with 4 1/2 stars. Unfortunately, the place couldn't present much more than its overly hyped reviews. The menu and quality of food was reminiscent of a High School football game. The prices matched for a high school allowance too, so maybe that was the theme. The only other patrons were over 60 years old which I can only contribute that they were there to obtain a nostalgic memory since the interior seemed to be as old as they were. Mmm I would go back here for the yummy pickle bar alone. I got the tater tots and a cookies and cream milk shake (can you tell I was Pms'ng? Lol) My son got the burger. He said it was good and on par with 5 guys. Solid good NJ diner quality food, ok prices, but the shining star is their customer service. Great little sit in grill. Small menu, but your classic regulars. They also have a nice little ice cream section. Kind and courteous staff.

Always friendly & polite! It's usually quite busy but they still make sure to pay attention to you and your order. The pricing is fantastic and the food is delicious. The food is delicious and the staff is friendly. I live nearby and on occasion stop in for fries with cheese and sauce. My friends and I have gathered here after a long day of swimming in a nearby lake and we had a nice summer night sitting on the tables outside. Convenient grab n go! This was my first visit to The Lantern. It was 4pm on a Saturday when I witnessed the bustling at the restaurant even at the off-peak hour. I ordered two cheeseburgers and a hot dog, all items were ordered all the way. I enjoyed my meal while watching, I guess Spring, college football with the news playing on the television on the other end of the establishment. There's no counter, stools or small tables so I occupied one of the four seat tables for myself. The workers spot you and bring the food to you. The food is packed in take-out containers but the fountain soda cups are not to be removed from the premise. I'm guessing that you could ask for a paper cup if you wanted a refill for the road. The Philly is real roast beef, best char burgers so juicy and to make my day, I had some tyropita cheese pie for a little Greek flavor! I even scored some great ice cream thank you! Just used their drive thru which is awesome if you're interested lazy bastard like I am. Got the tuna melt, Taylor ham & egg sandwich, a burger and milkshake. Everything was $21 bucks and well worth it. The tuna melt was delicious, sometimes you go plies and they burn the bread but this wasn't the case here and plenty of cheese too. Yum! Taylor ham and egg on a shot roll? What can be better??? Milkshake yummy and the burger was good as well. Maybe a tad overcooked but that would be nitpicking honestly. If your looking for fast food/ diner type food in Haskell area this is the place, I ordered a cheeseburger with Virginia ham and onion and it was amazing, also I think the Texas wieners are just right there is a reason why this place has such good reviews. When you walk inside they are immediately attentive and are very fast in making your order. Besides the dogs and burgers ( and gyros!) they also have ice cream here you can't beat that ! read more

We have passed this place by many times so sad we did cause we have definitely missed out on some great eats for the past 6 year's! Stupid us but low and behold today we tried it and let me tell you the most amazing food you could eat! Counter ordering and seating old time style! You order and they bring it to you! We had the lantern Special a cheeseburger with Virginia ham and american cheese a slice of white onion the whole size of the juiciest burger you will ever eat. As I took the first bite of this monster of a meal on the best hard soft roll I ever had the juice just dripped onto the yummy French Fry's making them even more fantastic. I ordered mine medium and it was perfection! The onion I'm thinking was a Spanish white one was so crisp and sweet. The beat part is they have a pickle bar and I added crunchy dill garlic chips to my burger of greatness!! It doesn't end yet YES I got a Texas Weiner all the way!! The snap of the dog when bitten into was a great treat the sauce and onions and relish was bringing me back to my childhood days of going to Libby's to get the dogs and sauce with my aunt and uncle. The only really bad thing about this place is they have ice cream soft serve and hard ice cream. What's so bad you ask about Ice cream?? We were so stuffed from the plates of goodness we were mad we couldn't eat ice cream haha!! Going to have ice cream first next time!! Having been raised on North Jersey dogs, we eat here at least twice a week. Pete and his crew are personable and serve great food. We found out early on that they are the former owners of Clifton's Hot Grill, a childhood favorite. I no longer have to travel far for great food. The burgers are phenomenal - cooked to order. While the only burger and hot dog place in town, the drive in window may need to be eliminated. I placed a small order and waited 20 minutes by the window.. finally pulled around and went in. While the woman behind me pulled around as well and received her order first. There was no one in the restaurant. The man at the counter was nice but the cook (probably owner) and 1 other cook assistant never even looked up. The ordered was incorrect and the chicken breast was chewy, probably previously frozen, cooked and then frozen again and reheated. Needs a little more consistency and better customer service. read more

Came across this local treasure purely by chance. Kept it simple: burgers, onion rings and fries. Went with the Lantern special burger..1/3 pound perfectly charbroiled to order on a fresh bun with a thin slice of Virginia ham and the sweetest onion ever! Added cheese to create a true masterpiece! Rings and fries hot but otherwise only OK. Saw many others ordering their signature hot dog (maybe next time)...and there definitely will be a next time!! read more

The Lantern is a very clean, casual place to have a meal of hotdogs, burgers, disco fries, milkshakes, etc. A small island counter serving complimentary pickles, onions, etc. They have an area with tables on the outside with a walk up window to order ice cream, it's cute. Good soft serve and hard ice cream. Very pleasant service and good food. I will be going back. :) read more

The Lantern has consistently excellent food , with charbroiled burgers, Texas hot dogs , all sorts of great fun food . The condiment bar has nice thin sliced pickles , onions , jalapeños , etc. The staff is friendly, and the owner always has an eye on things to make sure everything stays clean. They do have salads- but I've never tried them- the Texas dogs are too good to pass up. read more

The food is ok when they get the order right, butt this a regular occurrence that it gets screwed up. The owner is nice, but hasn't done the best job of getting people there who can fill orders. Luckily, there aren't many options nearby, so they have less competition. Don't try the "Greek food" and the hot dogs are rubbery and chewy. read more
