After a long day at the beach I was starving. Saw this place online with good reviews and decided to give it a shot. I wasn't gonna leave a review but seeing that the owner is very petty when replying to reviews I decided to. I enter and only one man was sitting there to eat, I should've taken that as a first red flag for a place that's 4.5 stars! Sat down with my partner and we decided to order chopped bbq chicken with smoked butter corn. My partner ordered sliced bbq brisket with fries. I order and as soon as the server finishes writing down my order I ask for the rest room. I was there for at most 5 minutes. I come back to the table and my partner gives me a disgusted look. Tells me that the food got brought out a minute after we ordered. I assume non of my food was fresh. Tasted like that as well. The pickled onions, pickles and coleslaw were sour, not my biggest enjoyment. Maybe some people like that, but it came with the food at no cost so I won't be nudging that too much. SMOKED butter corn was in a paper cup/bowl. 3/4 of the corn was swimming in the cup. It's like they opened a can of corn dumped in the cup added some butter and microwaved it. No smokey flavor at all and drench in butter and the can juice. The BBQ chopped chicken was next. Why oh why do they feel the need to pour a whole bottle of bbq in my chicken?! Bbq sauce is sweet and for it to be more sauce than chicken, that was literally the only thing I tasted. I promise you that the chicken was already sitting in bbq and it wasn't made to order. The chicken was so soggy and extremely sweet. My partner basically got the same result with the Slice bbq brisket. Soaking in bbq sauce. The best thing I ate was her French fries. Hallelujah they can dump potatoes into a fryer! My partner didn't eat anything. I've grown up to try and eat everything on the plate out of respect but I couldn't. I think because I was starving I managed to take a couple of bites before giving up. I pushed the chicken to the side so it'll look like I ate some at least, and my partner grabbed half the brisket put it in a napkin so it'll look like she ate some too. The only thing we took to go were the fries. This is by far my worst BBQ experience in any restaurant. If the food was made to order maybe I wouldn't consider this review, if the owner wasn't snarky with his remarks I wouldn't even care to leave this review. Maybe this is one of those places where you have to sit there & eat - but the takeout was not impressive. We ordered lunch in the middle of the week for pickup since it's down the street. We got a cheeseburger, cheese fries, cheese tater tots, fiery smokehouse burger, bread pudding bites and the espresso brownies. The cheese fries were literally melted cheese on fries - I thought it was like the nacho cheese type but no. It all stuck together and was impossible to eat - same with the tater tots. Service - the people working were really nice. Greeted upon arrival and given menus right away. She came over to take our order and checked on us a few times. They had tables set up so you could have your food there. It was pretty quiet like 2 other families there while we were there. Food - the name Smoke Shack is deceiving. The food did not taste like it was smoked or grilled. The ribs seemed to be cooked in the oven. Brisket didn't have any flavor. The mac cheese was watery and just did not taste good. I honestly would say if you want food with bbq sauce on it then you should go here but if you're looking for that grilled or smoked taste then this is not the place. OMG-- my mouth remains watered and my taste buds excited! I walked and placed an order to go. The staff was very efficient and quick! The place was very clean and inviting too. The food was absolutely what I expected and then some. I had pulled pork bbq sandwich and it was beyond yummy and flavorful! My wife got some chopped brisket and enjoyed every ounce. My son got a double bacon cheeseburger and I could not take a picture fast enough. The tots, fries, cornbread and the ultimate and amazing bread pudding bites rounded out the meal! YUMMY! Garbage food. Horrible quality ingredients. Thought they were sold out of several items because it was a busy Saturday night. Not the case. They were sold out of food because they are a failing, poor-excuse of a restaurant. Online ordering did not work because many items from their printed menu are not available on their website ordering platform, so you must call and order if you want some items. Girl over the phone was nice enough, but ultimately got the order wrong. I am now coughing, sneezing, and feel like I want a nap. Stay away. This restaurant offers a rare mix of superb service, excellent food, and very reasonable prices; a true 5 star experience. We stopped in for a late lunch with our picky toddlers. They enjoyed their fish and chips and chicken nuggets. I tried it as well and it was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The owner improvised kiddie cups for our toddlers' apple juice (and I'm grateful that they offered apple juice in the first place). I was craving a Nashville style fried chicken sandwich and described my craving to the owner. He improvised a delicious spicy dry rubbed fried chicken sandwich which satisfied my craving and more. My husband ordered the BBQ chicken and sliced lean brisket. The chicken was very tender and delicious. The brisket was lean and tender. My husband also ordered three diet cokes and they were brought out one at a time with perfect timing to ensure that he had cold drinks to wash down the food. The sides were all great too, highly recommend the mac and cheese and buttered corn. Overall, our lunch visit was a total hit and we will definitely return when we're in the area next. The chicken sandwich was nothing but generic Buffalo sauce. No other flavors came through at all. The Mac n cheese was eh. Kraft makes a better Mac n cheese. The corn was just ok. Considering the food options in the area this place could have been a stand out establishment. The food had to be mildly good to be a standout and it came up short. This is the second time I've been here. It's gotten better. It's gone from terrible to eh. They'll have 1 last chance when I get a $10 hotdog and give that a shot. 2nd order delivery from uber eats. I was in the mood for this again so i said, why not? Now if you're looking for an amazing Michelin 5 star restaurant, you're not going to get it here. What you're going to get is your good to go eatery that serves classic bbq styled dishes. I have ordered the combo with the brisket and the ribs. Never dry for me, always juicy and well seasoned with little fat. Now only thing I'm going to give a critique for is the price, for what you get I think in the 30s range is a bit much. This was my first visit to Smoke Shack BBQ. Signage is fairly basic and it may be easy to pass by. It was a Saturday at 3pm after a hike. I was told to take a seat so I did. Despite the burgers and BBQ marketing, I ordered the Dirty Dog. This item was humongous. I enjoyed my meal while watching traffic and Thatcher McGhee patrons eat across the street and listening to Billy Idol. I was given a fork which I utilized to eat the onion rings and most of the brisket since they would had most certainly fallen off if I didn't. I reached my capacity at the half way mark but still found the intestinal fortitude to munch onward. This was my breafast, lunch and dinner. First time here and for a carnivore I would say ahhhhh. I ordered the rib and chicken combo. The ribs were drowning in very very sweet BBQ sauce and they were not tender at all. The BBQ chicken came in a small round container. To me they should call it pulled chicken. No bones just pulled chicken. Sorry but I want chicken on the bone. Maybe if it was on the bone it would have been more tender. Sandra had the pulled pork. It was tender but really lacked the BBQ/ smoked flavor you are anticipating. Susie had the Mac & cheese with chicken- again chewy not tender chicken. The portions are small but the prices are average. I know it's new so maybe and hopefully they will work out the kinks. Pretty good food. Could have been warmer and was a touch dry. There is definitely potential for great food but they need to make a few adjustments. DO not come here. Food is just as bad as the customer service. I'm not expecting too much from NJ BBQ. I got a decent spread and nothing was good. 60+ dollar order for just me. After I poured salt and pepper into the Mac and cheese it was edible. The ribs were... mushy? They were seriously gross. The brisket was all fat. The cornbread was really not good. It had no flavor. Not that cornbread should be super flavorful but it was just meh. The slaw was alright. If you're looking for good BBQ look elsewhere. Although I live 12 minutes away and travel anywhere for barbecue, this place was never on the radar until I got a pop up ad on Facebook. Glad I did. Went to Yelp and checked out the reviews. Very mixed. First our server Cassidy was a pleasure. She recommended the brisket. I added corn bread and baked beans. My wife had a salad and pulled pork. The salad was big and very pretty. The pulled pork was as good as any other barbecue place we have visited. My wife wanted pulled chicken, but they didn't use breasts, only thighs. Their sweet barbecue sauce was delicious. The meals came with a cole slaw that was top notch and the pickled onions were a surprise treat. The brisket was good. Not outrageous, but not bad. It was good enough. The baked beans were delicious and the corn bread the second best I've ever had. It had real corn and was served with honey and butter. Very casual atmosphere with nice classic rock. First time ordering here. Used Door Dash. I ordered 1/2 ribs, tater tots and cornbread. Received French fries and Mac and cheese, and no ribs. I called them and they apologized and got the ribs ready and my dasher was nice enough to go back to pick them up. This time there was bread pudding bites along with the ribs. The packaging on the ribs could stand some improvement. I can't rate the tater tot's or corn bread, as I never got those, but the ribs were tender, although I felt the seasoning had a sourness to it. My takeaway was another mediocre level BBQ joint. Some can triumph but others just don't where still many people are good with the food. On my visit there within 6 months ago, I only review menu items we had, pulled pork and brisket sandwiches and sides and such. I get BBQ isn't an easy food business, I know what's involved. Prices are higher end here but as many BBQ joints do average nowadays, where I feel a noticeable quality then should match $ as well. Whenever not the case, I think, do better, where some places, should serve better than levels of backyard BBQ, stuff from my own backyard, where I've dabbled with pretty decent result, no, I'm no pitmaster but know the details. Also, sides okay were beans but mac&cheese was loose and liquidy in its mix, for me not so pleased with it. I like a firm mix and what I've been used to. Meats were not that eventful, pork textured too soft, as if sitting upon low heat, (for "holding" before when serving it) for when needed, thus, mushing up pulled pork, all the while. Had it that way before and it's for the same reason. Brisket, was not bad, I didn't eat that, my friend did and just said he's had better. I can't speak for other menu items. Found out from an employee, that's it's cheaper to call in the order than to make it on line. Seriously? The brisket was cold, not even slightly warm. Completely cold not warmed up at all like right out the fridge cold. I could deal with that if the meat was good. Flavor wasn't bad but it was dry as dry could be like shoe leather dry like 3 days old dry. We had an order of Mac-n-cheese that was warm and a plentiful order for $10.00. Too bad that sad Mac n cheese had absolutely NO flavor whatsoever. Like, come on, that poor Mac-n-cheese is crying for help. Hubs had a bbq pulled pork sandwich that was just satisfactory. He rated it a 5 on a scale of 1-10. Our first experience here, a few months ago, was mediocre at best. We gave it another try hoping it had improved. unfortunately it has not. If you want real bbq ya gotta head south or make it yourself. To the owner of this place...you could have a gold mine on your hands if you put effort into it. People might like this joint but my guess is that they've never had good bbq so you can get away with it. Warning: This location in Pompton Lakes does not serve sliced brisket, (like their other location). It only serves chopped (shredded) dark dry grey meat that perhaps once was brisket, and tries to revive it's moisture level (and add to the weight) with some sloshed on sauce. Not recommended. The ribs were way better but at $40 a rack, that's still pricey. Side of vinegar based coleslaw was OK but at $3 for a small cup, you'd be way better off making it yourself. read more

The 1/2 rack of baby back ribs was tender underneath but the top was hard in several sections. The BBQ sauce was sweet, not tangy. The pulled pork sandwich was also covered in sweet sauce. I would order in advance as the order took just over 20 minutes to come out of the kitchen. You can eat in but the majority of business while we were there was take out.
