This was my first visit to a JJ's Hot Dog. It was a Saturday at noon. I received lunch suggestions from the very pleasant staff but ordered the Belly Buster, the Hot Works and salted fries with ketchup. I paid then retrieved my food items when they were ready. There's only two tables available in the small space so the car would be Plan B. I enjoyed my meal while listening to ESPN's NFL Draft coverage and listening to faint sounds of music, both more for the sake of the workers. Hot Dogs from J J's are Dyn-o-mite!! and I couldn't have picked a better spot to kick off the "official" start of the season. Happy "Summertime Yummertime" my friends, Lol. Those deliciously loaded Dogs I ordered were JJ's Belly Busters and had plenty of Hot Onions, Sauerkraut, Cheese, Hot Chili, and Spicy Mustard. Definitely the best loaded Hot Dogs I've had in a while. The Dog itself was flavorful and had a perfect bite to it. Buns were hearty and didn't split or fall apart like some other places, even though they were overloaded which left me very impressed. I really thought the inside of my to- go bag was gonna be a total mess but as you can see everything stayed put nicely. Friendly Service at this small but functional spot which has very few indoor seating options but it's mostly a grab and go kinda place. I love hotdogs. I eat hotdogs all year around, they're very nostalgic for me. As a little bb my mother used to take me to work with her when she would clean people's apartments all over NYC and as a treat for being good she'd buy me a dirty water dog from a cart. JJ's is up there for me, they make fantastic dogs here and people constantly are in and out taking orders to go. This last time I went I got a sweet works: kraut and sweet relish, and a hook up: Mayo, Ketchup, slaw, & hot chili. I know I'll be back and I hope you try this place too. read more

Great little spot. And I mean little. While I prefer my dogs fried or grilled these are very good dirty water dogs. Fresh with a nice bite. The kraut is on point. The chili is meat based and spicier than most. And, the hot onions are hot as they should be. The service was extremely fast and friendly. The parking lot is very small but don't let that deter you. Just squeeze in where ever you can. You may need to block someone in, or, you may get blocked in yourself. But don't worry about it. It will all work itself out. read more

Been wanting to try this place for awhile and finally stopped in. The star here is the toppings - unlike most hot dog places, the chili here has some kick and the coleslaw is delicious. Unfortunately, the hot dog should be the star and its just fine, nothing special - seemingly exactly the same as Hot Dog Caboose and significantly below Jimmy Buffs, Jolly Nicks, Rutts Hut. Stopped here with a friend for lunch after going to the truck for 40 years. Basically the same hotdog that you get on Bloomfield Avenue. The service could have been a little better. Little hole in the wall hotdog joint that packs a punch. I was leaving a customers office and saw their sign and decided to give it a try and boy oh boy am I glad I did. The menu is surprisingly large. No tables but a little wall counter to stand and eat. There are tables outside to eat. The ladies here are sassy and fun. They were awesome. They all work in unison in a controlled chaos mode. There's constant activity with people coming in and out. One thing that was very impressive was when I was ordering a dog with their meat sauce they were sure to explain that their meat sauce is a little spicy and contains no beans which is awesome. There was a decent amount of heat to the meat sauce. Just enough to get your nose a little runny. The beef dogs were very tasty with a prominent beef flavor even with the meat sauce on it. I also got what I would call is the Italian version of a Georgia hot. It's a larger spicy Italian beef dog that was very good. I'm very pleased I decided to drop in for lunch. Oh yeah, finally got to stop at the new brick and mortar location of JJ's Hot Dogs. Been to the truck many times and the hot dogs here at the new location are just as good. I had left work for a half day and decided this was gonna be my lunch. The guys inside greeted me politely and I quickly ordered a chili cheese dog; one with chili, kraut and mustard; and one with cole slaw and baked beans. I still give the chili nod to a competitor, but JJs chili is still excellent-a little spicy and no cinnamon (not a fan of cinnamon in my hot dog chili). They use Sabrett's dogs served dirty water style and the buns are soft and simple. The three dogs were great...I usually like a little more cheese on my chili cheese dogs, but it tasted fine (cheese is a melted nacho-type cheese and not slices). The chili, kraut, and mustard had a nice spice because of he chili, but the mustard flavor did come through. My favorite was actually the cole slaw and baked beans...I know not a lot of people like this combo, but it was really tasty...I'd get it again for sure. If you're a fan of JJs truck in Newark, stop in here and you're taste buds will thank you. read more

I haven't been to the original truck in over 20 years so I've been looking forward to trying this. My wife is a veteran of late night runs to JJ's so she came along with me. Friendly counter staff and all the fixings you remember. Actually a lot more to choose from. I love that they fry up each order individually as they come in. No soggy dogs sitting around. We told them we'd be ordering five and before we could pick our toppings, five went into the fryer. I had a potato and cheese and a chili and cheese. Everything I remember from the truck. Belly buster was nice and spicy. Ordering delivery took a little something away from eating it in my car while it was still 200 degrees, but not worrying about catching a stray bullet or getting robbed was a nice change. It's a small spot, and you typically get them to go and eat in your car. Small counter if you want to wolf them down inside. The guys behind the counter are tremendously friendly, always nice to have some conversation while you wait. They even give you a hearty "thank you" which I appreciated. For my initial trip I went with three (3) with kraut & mustard. My personal benchmark. They were all great. Nice snap to the dogs, fresh rolls and a nice sauerkraut. All winners. So far myself and my family have eaten here about 15 times and it is always spot on. The chilly is spicy but not overwhelming. The kraut is very tasty. I can't speak highly enough about this place (& find that every time I do, I'm craving another delicious "dirty water" dog)! Fairfield needed a new spot for a quick lunch & JJ's surely delivered. Though parking is sparse and the space is truly best served for take-out patrons, you won't find more kind or quick service. The workers remember their customers and make you feel right at home. Classic push cart style hot dogs with a large selection of different toppings. Prices are cheap! You could easily grab a couple of hot dogs and a soda for lunch and keep in under $5. There is some counter space where a few people can eat inside, but it's best to grab and go. Only one real negative to the place, parking is limited. This place serves up some of the best dirty water dogs you will find. Though it is probably not fair to call them dirty water dogs here; this place is spotless. I have truly never been in such a clean hot dog joint in my entire life (and I've been in tons of them). Service is extra fast and the people here are friendly and happy to serve you. I love their chili sauce; just the right amount of spice and as I said, they have a very large selection of toppings, Some of the more interesting toppings include potato sticks and pepperoni, though I didn't try either. Had stopped here after seeing the sign while driving on 46. I love push carts dogs so figured this place might be good. Place doesn't have great parking but that's not the main issue. The issue I had was the dogs were just not good. They were ok, but any push cart would have been better. The chili was really watery and the sauerkraut was all wet and soaked by bun. The Fairfield location always has several creative combinations listed but it's hard to beat the original Belly Buster! The hot dogs were boiled but still had some snap. I usually prefer fried or grilled, but these were not bad. I have to knock a star for the chili having a sweet taste that I didn't really care for. On the plus side, the toppings were very fresh--hot toppings in the steam table, cold items refrigerated. The parking lot was really tiny with no clear signage on where you can or cannot park. Hard to explain, but essentially some parking spaces you will get boxed in or box someone in if you park there. Very nice kids working the counter when I stopped by late Saturday afternoon.
