After mike left and sold hot dog hut it's been through a few new owners, the current owners made this more into a diner with breakfast, more lunch/cold cuts, etc..it's not really a hot dog hut anymore, hot dogs are just ok now, I feel like the hot dogs and buns took a nose dive and just aren't as good quality as they used to be as well as previously stated tons of new menu items, very doable for lunch on the move but 3 stars for me now.

I was in the mood for a couple hot dogs so I Yelp'd and found this place. For a hot dog spot there is everything you'd want. Good tasting dogs, ample seating inside and out, friendly and quick service and very reasonably priced. I also like that they don't try to do too much. I'll be back !

This little hut is definitely better than I would've thought. I've lived in this area for years and must have driven past it a million times, kinda weird that it took me this long to give it a try. They offer a ton of different topping for your dog and even have a few creative options on their menu. I went with a dog with their all the way sauce and then another with just sauerkraut. Both were decent and I enjoyed them. The all the way sauce is pretty good for not being Hot Grill (sorry there's just never going to be a comparison and I am partial) but it was enjoyable. The quality of the hot dog was just alright, they are pretty small and seemed to be boiled? But I could be wrong. I also ordered a side of onion rings and this was a mistake. Not only did they taste like they came straight from the freezer but they also tasted like they possibly had freezer burn? Or they just tasted as if they were really old. Either way, they weren't good and I would never order them again. I'd come back for maybe a plain dog and just skip over on ordering sides.

I love hot dogs and gave this spot a try! When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. I walked…read moreinto a nice spot. I was greeted and ordered. I ordered: Coffee milkshake Hot Mac (with mac & cheese, red Hot, crispy onion Not Hot dog (vegan) the dawg (chili, dawg sauce, crispy onion, Sriracha dawg dust) gravy cheese fries with dawg dust Mac and cheese I really enjoyed the coffee milkshake! I also liked the hot mac. The mac and cheese alone was ok and so were the fries. I liked that they had a vegan option as well. All in all it was a good experience!

If you're not in the mood for a dog they have other stuff too, like Mac and cheese topped with pulled pork Doug, the owner, was a really nice guy also. Eric (from Cultinary Road Trip) and I planned to eat and get going, maybe a half hour stop at the max. I think we were there like 2 hours talking! Dogs we tried were: 1. all the way - chili, onion, mustard 2. the en fuego - hot pepper relish, hot onions, sriracha, red pepper flakes, mustard 3. Oregon Trail - baked beans, bacon, cheese, potato stix 4. Buff-Aloe - Franks Red Hot, blue cheese dressing, potato stix, celery seed 5. Vermont Bob - bacon, sauerkraut, maple syrup (had to get Quebec Eric some maple syrup...he was starting to shake haha) Video is out now, but these were all super tasty. Dawg house absolutely - Didn't Suck!

I have been hearing about Lover Dogs for quite some time and I visited recently for the first time…read more These hot dogs surprised me and I can honestly say that they might well be the best all the way hot dogs in the area. I went back a few days after my first visit because they were THAT good. When I walked in, I was greeted by the owner, Wayne Mills. We had a lovely conversation about how he opened Lover Dogs and how Lover Dogs has been his dream retirement. On the walls, there are photos of his brother Gene who was a renowned wrestler in the 80s. Wayne gave me a tour of the outdoor patio and the downstairs area that he plans to expand for breakfast/brunch. The patio area overlooks a nice view of the Passaic River. After the little tour, I ate my all the way hot dog. Lover Dogs hot dogs are air-fried which I thought was very unique. The chilli sauce is out of this world. Super flavorful and perfectly seasoned. Wayne explained that he spent a long time perfecting the recipe and worked with several people to develop. The hot dogs are Hoffman brand which he discovered when he visited his brother many years ago at Syracuse University. It was really nice to see Wayne pay homage to the previous building owners with a framed collage on the wall. I am a local history nerd so I really loved seeing all of the old photos dating back to the early 1900s. Please visit this awesome local business!

Rutt's Hut - Bacon cheese and chilli cheese rippers

A Ripper: otherwise known as a "Deep-Fried Hotdog". Three plain and simple words, but when…read morecombined, they are nearly pornographic. At least they are for me. Rutt's Hut has been on my punch list for a long time. Actually NJ fried Hot Dogs have been both from Rutt's and from Hiram's over in Ft. Lee. I got to Hiram's and today was my luck day to get a shot at a Ripper. Rutt's is a bit off the beaten path and is down a meandering pothole filled road in a very industrial feeling part of town surrounded by wooded areas. It seems like it would be a better place for a serial killer body dump than a Hot Dog vendor but it's been there since 1928 so it must be doing something right. There is a large, private, and free parking lot which is a huge bonus in my playbook. The building looks like it is in disrepair. There are 2 areas to eat here. A door to the left seems to be a pub/bar with sit down service and then there is the right side that I went to which is a stand up, indoor counter where you can get in and out very quickly. This is a cash only spot so come prepared. Get to an open counter worker, give them your order, and pay when they hand over the goods. I was a little intimidated when I walked in because it was clear that everyone else in the place understood the ordering routine and knew the menu (there are quite a few other items you could order other than Rippers). I stood in a corner like a potted plant for about 10 minutes and watched what others did when they walked in before I figured out the process. It's pretty simple but I did not want to screw up Rutt's world order by doing something stupid. The 3 Rippers I ordered were good (but not best in class for me). The one I liked the most was the chili cheese dressed Ripper because the chili was actually quite tasty. On the counter are large containers of brown mustard and almost-fluorescent yellow relish. People seem to love the stuff. It was a bit like sweetened sauerkraut for me and the color of it makes me think it is either radioactive or seasoned with antifreeze. I would be happy going here again but I can't say that my Rippers were anything special. I might ask for them to be a little overdone next time to add a bit of texture. What I did like about Rutt's was the history, the dilapidated building, the simplicity of the menu, the naming of their dogs as "Rippers", and the fact that it felt like I was eating among real NJ natives that knew exactly what they were there for. Experiencing local culture doesn't get much better than that.
