Cold hot dogs and uncooked fries. Just save your time and throw your money in the garbage because that's what we did with the food. On the bright side the water was cheap and cold. Prices aren't high. Maybe avoid the fries and eat a cold hot dog, they're precooked anyway. read more

Terrible experience. I'm very confused as to how so many of you enjoy this place. My GF and I ordered (4) hot dogs from the menu and a small order of fries. Nothing crazy. Well.....we couldn't have been more disappointed. I regret not taking pics to post for you guys to see. I gave this place 2 stars because most of the food was edible and seemed fresh. Ok....we were given a buzzer and told our order would be ready shortly. When the buzzer rang I went to pickup our lunch and the outside of the boxes they put the dogs in were dripping with mustard and "chili" sauce. It just looked sloppy and careless. My second complaint is the size of the hot dog. The dogs are literally the same diameter as my pinky finger and there's more bread than hot dog so don't expect much in the way of meat. Third complaint is the toppings. I ordered a Texas something or other that was supposed to be chili, crushed Fritos and chopped raw onion. So, all (3) of the ingredients were there, BUT, there was no meat in the "chili"!! And it tasted and looked like a packet of taco seasoning mixed with mayonnaise, there were a total of maybe (4) crushed Fritos on the dog and the onions were at least fresh. My GF ordered a chili cheese dog and she was given the same liquid chili in a very small amount and a ton of cheese sauce to hide it. It's as if they ran out or ran low and scrambled to stretch out a tiny amount of chili to get through the day. Our dogs looked NOTHING like the pics everyone has posted over the years. They looked pitiful. As for the fries....our fries looked NOTHING like the pics posted throughout the years. There wasn't a crinkle cut fry in site. We were served, maybe, (11) or (12) of the thinnest shoestring fries I've ever seen. They looked like match stick potatoes. They had a look that made us think they were soft and slightly under cooked but they were hard as rocks and crunchy like pretzels. As if they were cooked well in advance and reheated and given to us. My other dog was a plain dog with K&M on a pretzel bun which wasn't terrible but again..the thinnest hot dog I've ever seen. It's a cute spot and has potential but I'll never go back. There are places like Chris's red hots in Verona that provide loaded dogs for about the same price and average dirty water dogs all over. Oh....forgot to add that they were completely out of the ingredients for the "Italian dog" at 1:30pm on a Monday. read more

I got the "double stuffed" on a pretzel roll with kraut and mustard. Great!!! Tasty, roll was perfect but then again I'm a sucker for pretzel rolls. Casing had a nice little snap to it. Then I got the chili. You can get mild or spicy, so I went with spicy. If you're a spicy kind of person, it's vary tame. Extremely flavorful and I liked the way the meat was done. Had a very good consistency that I can't find the right words for. When you try it, you'll see what I mean. Lastly, the woman there was great. Very hospitable and we had a nice little conversation while she was getting everything ready. When in town and you're hungry, don't pass this place up. Stepson and I waited in line and ordered regular hotdogs-no Miss, no fuss! So shocked that with the limited menu they don't even steam the hotdog buns! What?? The young man working there popped the hotdogs in the microwave, put them on a cold bun and handed it over. It was awful! Happened to be in the area and stumbled across hot dog caboose (thanks Yelp). In a cool little part of town it's a hot dog joint inside an old train car. Believe it was the owner who was inside, very friendly and great. Masked up, sanitizer on the counter and she used a sanitizing sheet on my credit card before handing it back so you know they are doing Covid right. Got 2 dogs all the way and fries - little odd, any other place in NJ I have been when you say all the way it's mustard, chili and raw onions. Here the onions were the red onions, actually not bad but not what I expected, would be more clear next time. Fries were great, love the Sabretts and fresh rolls. Tables outside so for the first time in 6 months I sat at a table and ate at a restaurant- gotta say was pretty great. Definitely added to my north NJ hot dog tour. read more

I've had this place bookmarked for a couple months, knowing we'd be in NJ during the first week of July. If I lived here, Hot Dog Caboose might well be an occasional stop for me. First, I dig the outside tables in the long shadow of the old caboose. Great place to sit under the umbrella and nosh on some dogs and birch beer. The lady working the counter was also extremely polite and friendly. Hot Dog Caboose uses Sabrett's in its dogs. In our case, the dogs weren't completely warmed through. Not cold, but not hot either. Wife had a relish dog. It was standard. I had the chili cheese (I guess liquid cheese is a thing in NJ) and a Reuben dog on a pretzel bun, which was absolutely clutch. In fact, it's probably the best pretzel bun I've ever put in my mouth. It might be a while before I get the chance to come back to this neck of the woods, but I'll keep Hot Dog Caboose bookmarked in the mean time. What a gem this hotdog place is! The frito dog is a chili hotdog with just the right amount of and onions with a few Fritos on the top. It was absolutely amazing. The Italian dog was okay but not great. They have Boylans in many varieties including diet and let me tell ya I will keep coming. back for the combination of that Fritos dog and a Boylans any day. Great location. It's next to a train track and there's an old train right there on the side. They have a few outdoor tables which was perfect for today. We went for lunch. The line was somewhat long which is a bit unfortunate because it didn't need to be. They took your order then goes to make your food. Great for cook to order, not great for everyone waiting on line behind. The food was great, I had a taco dog which had crushed corn chips, chili, cheese and jalapeño. A very simple place to grab a quick and inexpensive bite. Service was friendly, quick and very important, nice. It has plenty of parking and a three picnic tables to sit and enjoy your meal. I love me a good hot dog so I was totally down for it; especially after a quick look at their menu which is so amazing! When we got there we placed our order & people soon followed after us.
