Steve's Burgers -- A New Jersey Original Steve's Burgers is one of those long-standing New Jersey spots where you can tell its history just by looking at the exterior. Old-school in the best way. That alone made it impossible to leave off our burger tour. We stopped by on a quiet Saturday around 3 PM, yet the place was already fairly full. In New Jersey, that's not an easy feat--especially at that hour, and especially in a location that doesn't naturally draw crowds. People were there for one reason only: the burgers. One bite in, and it's immediately clear why this place has lasted. There's a pronounced char and smoky flavor from the grill, balanced nicely with fresh vegetables and a crisp bun. Everything works together in harmony--no single element shouting over the others. The pricing is excellent, which only adds to the appeal. Even the fries deserve a mention: simple, well-executed, and genuinely good. If someone asked me where to find a burger that represents New Jersey, Steve's would be high on my list. It may require a bit of a drive, but it's absolutely worth the trip. Classic, honest, and confidently good.

    Italian Dog and Fries

The original Steve's Burgers on US Route 46 in Garfield is a no-frills burger and hot dog roadside shack (literally) with a laid-back vibe, old-school charm, and great service -- that has won award after award for its tasty, freshly-made burgers and hot dogs. This isn't the sort of establishment you bring friends, romantic interests, or business associates if you're trying to impress them with upscale atmosphere or decor, but if you're looking to introduce them to one of the best burgers or hot dogs in the area at a very reasonable price -- Steve's Burgers is second to none. I had a Italian Dog ($4 as of December 2025), a grilled all-beef Sabrett hot dog served with sauteed onions and peppers and topped with broiled potato slices and brown deli mustard in a soft roll, and a Regular Dog ($2.75 as of December 2025), a grilled all-beef Sabrett hot dog topped with complimentary (and complementary) beef chili and sauteed onion. YUM! The dogs were perfectly grilled, offering a satisfying snap and a slightly smoky taste with each bite. I split a generous order of the freshly hand-cut 'boardwalk'-style fries with a friend who joined me for lunch, which we both really enjoyed. The ambiance is VERY casual and the restaurant is very cozy -- with a semi-open kitchen and limited indoor seating with only three small tables and five or six stools at the counter adjacent to the register. After placing your order at the counter from the menu that allows you to build-your-own burgers or hot dogs -- all of which are cooked to order -- grab a seat and wait for the server to bring your order out from the kitchen. There are a handful of uncovered/unheated tables located outside if the weather is cooperative. Despite the casual environment, service is very good with counterstaff that are very polite and knowledgeable about the menu. I will definitely be back to try a burger! PRO TIP #1: Bring cash. Steve's Burgers doesn't accept credit cards or any electronic form of payment. PRO TIP #2: Practice parallel parking. Steve's Burgers only has a couple of designated parking spots in the small parking lot immediately adjacent to the restaurant, but there is plenty of free on-street parking on Dye Avenue and Seifert Street.

Food was delicious!! My boyfriend and I got the bacon cheeseburger, cali burger, cheese fries, and hot dog (w/ chili, relish, onions). The prices are good, place has cozy vibes, and the waitress was very sweet! Would definitely come back :)

Stopped in for the first time mid week for lunch. Had a Steve's burger with fries. Burger was on the small side cooked medium. Taste was good but not great. Fries were plentiful with a nice crunch. This is a very small old Jersey roadside burger stand that has not been updated/renovated since new . Only a few parking spaces available due to the property size. Street parking is available. There are a few tables inside as well as about 6 counter seats. The cashier/server was extremely polite, professional, friendly and very accommodating. The restaurant itself was very small inside and depending on the time you visit, you might not be able to eat inside. Outside tables are available. They actually ran out of burgers while I was there for lunch. Very nice menu variety with reasonable prices. This is a CASH ONLY restaurant.

Steve's Burgers is still one of a handful of burger "joints" in the state that's a must visit. Yes, there are those slider places and those smash burger places, but Steve's makes traditional burgers. You remember, when hamburger variations were limited to cheese and few condiments. Ok, they have a bit more than that, but you get the idea. Fresh, properly fatty ground meat, cooked perfectly on a soft bun. If greed is good, then grease is good too (at least with burgers it is). Just make sure you order the fantastic onion rings. In fact, while you're at it, consider foregoing the burger altogether and order the patty melt, which in my opinion is better than the burger. Buttered, toasted rye bread, grilled onions and melted cheese. Oh yes! As for the service, this is a burger place. Everyone is friendly and welcoming, but don't walk up to the counter if you aren't ready to order or you'll get looks. Yeah, the parking is tight and there's not much indoor seating, and you have at about a 50% chance of being killed trying to pull back onto Route 46, but the food here is worth it.

Worth the trip to try the burger and a hot dog. Of course it had to be the Steve's burger and Steve's hot dog that I ordered. The hot dog was my favorite, even though the actual hot dog was lost amongst all the toppings. We also ordered plain fries and disco fries, which I learned are fries with cheese and gravy. The only thing I'm bummed I couldn't order to go with my meal was Steve's root beer; it was sold out. Went there around 2:30 on a Saturday. Only 3 stools at the bar were available. Not the ideal place to sit since you order at the bar so it gets crowded. Some people ate outside since it was warmer than usual (still in the 40s though!). There was a constant flow of people coming in to order and pick up orders. If you're eating in the staff will bring you your food. At the end of our meal we ordered the cinnamon roll empanadas. I saw a post on Instagram (where else!) that a bakery was selling them there. You wouldn't know they were available otherwise. Then I couldn't resist getting a chocolate shake. I didn't have this until I got home so it tasted like thick milk chocolate at that point. Still enjoyed every sip! Everything my friend and I ordered came to about $46. You're going to get a solid meal at really great prices! CASH ONLY! (They have an ATM if needed.)

A few feathers that we pulled outta the wings
    M T.

Cash only! We stopped in for lunch and ordered the wings (10), onion rings and an American burger. The burger patty itself was good, and the bun was soft, like it was steamed, the egg was overcooked and would've been nice if the yolk was runny. Also, I didn't taste or see any cheese and the bacon was chewy instead of crispy. As far as the wings, they weren't bad, minus the few wings that had feathers still attached to them. Onion rings also weren't bad. One thing we noticed was there were a lot of flies inside. Maybe it's time for a deep cleaning. Cash only.

Classic Burger and Fries! Cooked perfectly!

Wow!!! Super cool place and the food was amazing. Service as fantastic. Will definitely be back to try some other items on the menu!

Steve's is legendary here in NJ. On many Best Burger of NJ lists. Great little shack of a road-stand; 1-2 tables inside; a few outside; parking for maybe 10 cars. Burgers, dogs, chicken tenders,. cheese steaks, fries, onion rings, soda, milkshakes...... pretty much covers it. I think I like the chili dogs better. Is it in my Top 3 in NJ? ....no, but definitely a must if your a Foodie.

First time here. It's a shack hole in the wall roadside joint. Walked in was met by a friendly sweet lady. Ordered food. Grabbed a Steve's grape soda. I ordered Jersey burger and hot dog w sourkraut red onions mustard ketchup. Food came out quick enough. I ate the hot dog first. It was just ok. No snap to the dog. I probably won't order it again. Now comes the Jersey burger it was delish. It reminded me of good home bbq. the patty wasn't as big as I would have expected. I should have ordered it double patty. I would have gave 5 stars over all. But the hamburger bun was horrible. Dunno if it was old or what. It sucked. Get better buns Steve. Almost forgot great onion rings and even better French fries

Finally visited for the first time and would say I completely agree with majority of the other reviews. The vibe is old school and the service is friendly and the FOOD is tasty tasty. Simple dog, cheeseburger and fries were delicious. It's cash only and indoor seating is limited but still worth it. I will definitely be looking to return.

This little place is HUGE on flavor.

What an amazing find! For about $26 we got a bacon cheeseburger, 1/2 cheeseburger, disco fries and onion rings. The patty was nicely seasoned, the burgers were more than filling, and the onion rings were flavorful (not oily). The disco fries were good: the gravy was the star though I would have preferred it being another type of cheese vs melted nacho-like cheese. Street parking behind the shop. A bit of seating inside (about three tables, but you can sit on the counter). Some seating outside too, but be careful with the current heat. Cash only; restroom on premises for customers a plus. Highly recommend.

These burgers are CRAZY. Juicy, big, filling, and delicious. Hits all the marks. Their onion rings absolutely slaps. Can't wait to come back!

I already knew was about to be in for a treat! And the iconic hot dogs were out of this world! Each of their toppings are freshly made in-house. You can choose Sabrett or Thumann's and it's your call if you want them prepared in dirty water, grilled, or deep fried. Regardless of which ever dog you choose, you won't be disappointed! Aside from a cool old fashioned all-American glizzy, I also doubled my desire with a double smash burger. The freshly made sirloin patty melted right in my mouth! Between excellent food with really friendly service, I felt right at home. I could see how parking might be tough during a busy lunchtime, but we lucked out. I ordered a BLVD Ripper (foot long Windmill Dog) with chili, cheese and kraut and one of the Thumann's deep fried with kraut chili and mustard. Also shared some tots with my lunchmates. The shop itself is nice and set up for both sit-down and take out. Guy behind the counter, who I assumed was the owner, was super friendly and seemed pretty enthusiastic about his place. My take...I thought the dogs were done perfectly and the chili and kraut were delicious. I would have preferred a little more cheese on the ripper as the flavor got buried. The hot dog buns were just ok...they didn't hold up to contain the toppings, which was a little disappointing. Tots were great. My two lunchmates gave a mixed review...one loved his two dogs and the other liked the dogs, but was just so-so in the toppings and the buns. You can't please everyone I guess. Overall I had a great lunch, but it's pretty far out of our way to become a regular lunch spot for us. That said, if in the area, I would definitely stop in again!
