Had this for the first time last night and will def be a regular here. Got the bacon cheeseburger medium (You might have to specify the temperature bc the server didn't ask me but not a big deal) and it was tremendous. Cooked perfectly and it was like the meat melted right into your mouth after every bite. Very affordable too compared to other places especially nowadays. Paid $8.50 for bacon cheeseburger and obviously regular cheeseburger is even less. Like others said hole in the wall kinda place off the highway so don't let that deceive u. This isn't the sort of establishment you bring friends, romantic interests, or business associates if you're trying to impress them with upscale atmosphere or decor, but if you're looking to introduce them to one of the best burgers or hot dogs in the area at a very reasonable price -- Steve's Burgers is second to none. I had a Italian Dog ($4 as of December 2025), a grilled all-beef Sabrett hot dog served with sauteed onions and peppers and topped with broiled potato slices and brown deli mustard in a soft roll, and a Regular Dog ($2.75 as of December 2025), a grilled all-beef Sabrett hot dog topped with complimentary (and complementary) beef chili and sauteed onion. YUM! The dogs were perfectly grilled, offering a satisfying snap and a slightly smoky taste with each bite. I split a generous order of the freshly hand-cut 'boardwalk'-style fries with a friend who joined me for lunch, which we both really enjoyed. The ambiance is VERY casual and the restaurant is very cozy -- with a semi-open kitchen and limited indoor seating with only three small tables and five or six stools at the counter adjacent to the register. After placing your order at the counter from the menu that allows you to build-your-own burgers or hot dogs -- all of which are cooked to order -- grab a seat and wait for the server to bring your order out from the kitchen. There are a handful of uncovered/unheated tables located outside if the weather is cooperative. Stopped in for the first time mid week for lunch. Had a Steve's burger with fries. Burger was on the small side cooked medium. Taste was good but not great. Fries were plentiful with a nice crunch. This is a very small old Jersey roadside burger stand that has not been updated/renovated since new . Only a few parking spaces available due to the property size. Street parking is available. There are a few tables inside as well as about 6 counter seats. The cashier/server was extremely polite, professional, friendly and very accommodating. The restaurant itself was very small inside and depending on the time you visit, you might not be able to eat inside. Outside tables are available. Steve's Burgers is still one of a handful of burger "joints" in the state that's a must visit. Yes, there are those slider places and those smash burger places, but Steve's makes traditional burgers. You remember, when hamburger variations were limited to cheese and few condiments. Ok, they have a bit more than that, but you get the idea. Fresh, properly fatty ground meat, cooked perfectly on a soft bun. If greed is good, then grease is good too (at least with burgers it is). Just make sure you order the fantastic onion rings. In fact, while you're at it, consider foregoing the burger altogether and order the patty melt, which in my opinion is better than the burger. Buttered, toasted rye bread, grilled onions and melted cheese. Oh yes! As for the service, this is a burger place. Everyone is friendly and welcoming, but don't walk up to the counter if you aren't ready to order or you'll get looks. Steve's is the kind of spot you stumble upon on vacation somewhere and you only experience it once. Having it 15 minutes away is a great perk for living in North Jersey. We stopped in and the owner was working. He was super friendly and great to talk to. Made sure we were all set and had every thing we needed. The burgers were great and the prices even better. They have local soda and combo meals. They have hot dogs that rival all the iconic hot dogs spots in the area. The only con is the location. It's not a bad area it's just the fact it's on the highway and you have to turn around if your coming other way. Which isn't a big deal just a litttle inconvenient. Will be back often. Worth the trip to try the burger and a hot dog. Of course it had to be the Steve's burger and Steve's hot dog that I ordered. The hot dog was my favorite, even though the actual hot dog was lost amongst all the toppings. We also ordered plain fries and disco fries, which I learned are fries with cheese and gravy. The only thing I'm bummed I couldn't order to go with my meal was Steve's root beer; it was sold out. Went there around 2:30 on a Saturday. Only 3 stools at the bar were available. Not the ideal place to sit since you order at the bar so it gets crowded. Some people ate outside since it was warmer than usual (still in the 40s though!). There was a constant flow of people coming in to order and pick up orders. If you're eating in the staff will bring you your food. At the end of our meal we ordered the cinnamon roll empanadas. I saw a post on Instagram (where else!) that a bakery was selling them there. You wouldn't know they were available otherwise. Then I couldn't resist getting a chocolate shake. The burger patty itself was good, and the bun was soft, like it was steamed, the egg was overcooked and would've been nice if the yolk was runny. Also, I didn't taste or see any cheese and the bacon was chewy instead of crispy. As far as the wings, they weren't bad, minus the few wings that had feathers still attached to them. Steve's is legendary here in NJ. On many Best Burger of NJ lists. Great little shack of a road-stand; 1-2 tables inside; a few outside; parking for maybe 10 cars. First time here. It's a shack hole in the wall roadside joint. Walked in was met by a friendly sweet lady. Ordered food. Grabbed a Steve's grape soda. The patty was nicely seasoned, the burgers were more than filling, and the onion rings were flavorful (not oily). The disco fries were good: the gravy was the star though I would have preferred it being another type of cheese vs melted nacho-like cheese. Street parking behind the shop. Today is national Cheeseburger Day so it just made sense to finally check out a spot that followers of the channels have been asking me to go to for over two years now. Made the trip to Steve's Burgers in Garfield, NJ today! Little spot right on 46 with a few tables inside and a few tables outside. It was nice outside so we decided to eat out there. Service was quick and friendly. Two bacon cheeseburgers and two bottles of "Steves" branded soda was exactly $20. This spot is cash only. So a ton of people told me this was the best burger in NJ so I had high hopes going in. The roll was fresh and tasty, quality of the beef was good, and the bacon was ... well ... bacon is never bad is it?! I got mine with lettuce, tomato, and onion and chose not to use any condiments. They did not ask me for a temp on the burger so I assumed they cook them all to well done. This was a really tasty burger. With that said, in my opinion, not the best burger in NJ. I'd absolutely go back and I'd eat this again or try other options, but I've had a lot of great burgers in NJ and this cannot dethrone my current favorite. Still a great lunch regardless. After Steve's closed down in North Bergen, we were bummed! We finally got the chance to come down the only one open which I believe is the OG but it was not the same... Upon arriving, we were alarmed at the dirtiness, space, and lack of friendliness that the (not open anymore) North Bergen location delivered to us. NB was much cleaner, spacious, and welcoming. We waited at the counter for a couple minutes before making eye contact with the woman who took our order then sat down at the only small green table available but then we were able to switch the the more comfortable seating once people finished and they cleaned the tables. I ordered my usual lettuce wrapped Steve's burger which came with a generous amount of lettuce but definitely not washed/rinsed beforehand...there were some dead black bug on it and as a veggie lover I know this is normal and why it's so important to rinse/wash your veggies...the burger itself was ok definitely not what I remembered from the NB location, unfortunately; same goes for the cheese fries that my fiancé had - it just lacked flavor, the cheese sauce definitely didn't taste like cheese or anything at all... To sum it all up, we won't be returning and are sad they closed the NB location - that one was the best one (in our humble opinion) from the space, service and food it was great and what had us come back until they closed their doors...this location is lacking for sure but could have a ton of potential with some remodeling, deep cleaning and a bathroom *inside* not outside...that was worse looking that a porta potty (yikes). read more

Recently moved to North Jersey and got to try this place for the first time last week. It was absolutely delicious. I just had a burger and an order of disco fries but they were truly outstanding. I had tried a different location before, which was only okay - but this one had better reviews so I decided to give it another go. I had the patty melt and enjoyed it. It wasn't as greasy as I was expecting it to be, but I was only able to finish half because it's still pretty heavy. We also got fries, which I didn't love. Came here twice in the last month with co-workers and found Steve's Burgers to be outstanding. The first time I came I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and a dog with chili and kraut. Second time I got the bacon cheeseburger again with a chili cheese dog and a Steve Dog. (chili onions peppers and cheese). Both times the service was quick and the food was simply awesome. The burger was delicious (through I would have liked the bacon done a little more crispy) and the dogs (Sabrett's) were done perfectly. The grilled onions and peppers on the Steve Dog was fantastic! Steve's Burgers has been on my "Foodie List" for some years now, and I finally had the opportunity to visit! I came early, because I've heard there is a lunch "rush hour", and I don't typically like crowds. I informed the waitress that it was my first time to eat at this establishment, and she told me what are the staples and good eats for a first-timer. I settled on Steve's Burger (Topped with sauce, cheese, and an onion ring with the staples) with a half onion-ring half fries combo. I waited for about 7-8 minutes, and my food came out. Everything --- and I mean everything --- was piping hot: the burger, fries, and onion rings. I took a bite out of the burger and immediately understood why this place has a reputation: it's a no-fuss, good grub burger spot. You don't need a michelin star when you've got your own secret to making delicious grub. I finished the food...in about 10 minutes. There was absolutely nothing left on my plate. Next time? Probably try the "Burger of the Month" or the famous "Patty Melt". But for now, today was a great introduction to Steve's Burgers, by having, the burger that started it all, Steve's Burger. Gave this place a try as I had heard that its one of the better burgers in NJ. Its definitely a solid burger but I wouldn't drive too far for one (which I did)... I think its quite similar to a Shake Shack burger, but bigger and better. But there are other local places which are just as good, if not better. On our drive back home after our usual Walmart run, my brother and I saw a sign that said this place was voted Yelp's best burgers or hot dog. Being a yelper myself I was a bit intrigued and my brother cannot say no to a burger. I also personally love a hot dog. We went and I got a hot dog and my brother got fries and a burger. It was just a normal burger/hot dog/fries moment. I did not realize my brother went back many times after our initial visit when he past the area so that was interesting to know. The ppl there are great. You get the local dive bar welcoming feeling and it does feel like a community. We recently went back because we were hungry but didn't know what to get. I got the hot dog and my brother got the burger. We shared disco fries and each got Steve's black cherry soda. For nonsoda drinkers, this was a treat.
