I was driving through the area and had to look this place up because it was buzzing with people mid day on a Wednesday. Not disappointed! Service was very friendly (which I didn't expect for a counter service). The woman said everyone loves to order a hot dog "all the way" which has onions mustard and chili. I've had chili dogs from famous places in DC and so forth but I do have to say, it was l better here. A simple classic done right. Note that--The chili is mild, not spicy. SIMPLE CLASSIC! This business started in 1961 and I can see why the locals aren't upset about recent price adjustments. (They are updating their menus atm). But they have BOGO happy hours on some weekdays also. Perhaps sitting firmly on top of this list is The Hot Grill, a Clifton institution for a very, very long time. Their hot dogs, served all the way (chili, mustard & onions) are the things of legend. In all fairness there other places serving similar fare, for similar lengths of time but none doe as well as The Hot Grill. And while the list has diminished over time with the disappearance of a bunch of local hot spots (Teddy's, River View East, Fallsview), Hot Grill retains it's top spot on the list of the very best, eclipsing the likes a Johnny & Hanges, among others. The chili and gravy are unlike any I've had before, yet I can't quite describe them other than delicious! Lines move fast as u place order at counter and take to your choice of seats. Another fave is their roast beef on soft roll with gravy. We always grab the picnic special which includes package of 12 uncooked hot dogs, 12 buns and a pint of chili during summer months although available year round. You can always add on a pint/quart of chopped onions for additional charge although it used to come as part of the special. Overall, I've been coming here for over 40 years and still my fave place for those cravings! Originally started in the '60's with 20 bar stools, upgraded to accommodate 80 patrons and now 145! This place doesn't look like much, but it's clear why it's been a local landmark for decades once you dine here. I've never been much of fan of the type of hot dog that's smothered in chili and all kinds of other stuff. I've always just enjoyed them simple with some ketchup. But maybe I just haven't been to the right place until now. This is the right place. The hot dogs here are fried to perfection, with just the right saltiness and flavor. And the chili and onions that they put on these add just the right amount of kick, not overwhelming at all. To top it all off, the prices here are extremely reasonable, particularly in 2024. Also a small soda total of $17 and change including tax and tip. The sausage was salty and burger was plain and nothing special but good meaty taste. Fries were good and hot. But I feel the high scores do not match for these foods, services and interiors. High scores may come from nostalgia which I understand I also love some restaurants with nostalgic. When I was in the area I came across this hidden hot dog gem, it's been around since 1961. I ended up getting their "World Famous Tastiest Texas Weiner" which was their fried hot dog with homemade chilli, onions, and mustard !! It was delicious and hit the spot! I also tried their homemade minestrone soup which was a yummy and unexpected treat that went great with the hot dog. The cherry slushie was literally the cherry on top of this quick pit stop! I finally made it here. It wasn't a waste of time but it wasn't spectacular either. I got three all the way. The dogs had a good snap and were deep fried, likely Thuman's. The mustard was nice and bold, the chili sauce was kind of neutral and needed the mustard to shine. The onions were gross and reminded me of reconstituted dried onions. The onions had such a powerful taste that it threw everything else off and left a bad after taste. Next time I'll try just chili and mustard. We used to live in Clifton a few years ago, this was our favorite burgers joint in the area. Hadn't been here for about two years. Visited our old stomping grounds today, still so good. We usually order our hamburgers with fresh cut onions. Nothing wrong with their delicious slushie and a side of fries too. The burgers here, whether you order two or more- hits the right spot. It's comfort food, the place has a good neighborhood feeling, and staff is always alert and friendly. Cash is king, bring it or you can go to the ATM machine inside the establishment. Credit cards are not accepted. The Hot Grill brought back memories of late food cravings, and it was always made delicious and fresh. The cut onions added in is a great add on- I often can't stand onions, and coming here, it changed my mind and I love the extra poured on to our burgers. Plenty of parking. The World's Tastiest Texas Weiner: that's what The Hot Grill in Clifton is known for. You'll know that from the huge sign in their parking lot, and if you miss it their menu will tell you. It's also written boldly on a large banner above the counter and it's the first thing you see on their website. So, of course that's what I had to try. Unless you specify otherwise, the Texas Weiner is served "all the way", which includes a deep-fried dog, raw chopped onions, mustard and their "World Famous Chili Sauce". When it comes to chili dogs, I'm a tough customer. Although chili dogs are not hard to find in NJ, so far, I've only found a few places that make truly worthy homemade chili. The current reigning champion is Curbside Café in Parsippany. That being said, The Hot Grill makes a very tasty Texas Weiner. Is it the World's Tastiest? Not to me, but it was still very good. The dog was cooked well and had a good snap, and they didn't drown it in the chili sauce. Something too many places do. The chili sauce itself had a flavor that I wasn't a fan of, but it's not due to any lack of quality, just my personal preference regarding the seasoning they use. Based on the crowd and the number of chili dogs I saw being served they're clearly very popular. The restaurant also serves burgers, fries, onion rings and a handful of other items. I didn't try them, but what I saw looked good. The interior is clean and large enough to accommodate a large crowd. The service was efficient and friendly. Would I go back? Absolutely. I'd like to try "The World's Tastiest Texas Weiner" one more time and maybe some onion rings and a shake. Found myself in Clifton for some business earlier this week and one of our followers recommended that we stop in and try out Hot Grill. It was lunch time, so why not?! Nice little vibe to the place with a good crowd and the people up front calling out orders to the cooks. I was told to try the fries with gravy, Signature Dog, and Burger all the way...and that's exactly what I did. The fries were just fries but the gravy was unique. Tasted almost like a beef gravy was mixed with Italian dressing. A definitely basil sweetness there. Good hot dog. Mix of beef and pork and it was deep fried so it had a nice snap. The chilli on this was incredible. Tons of flavor and very smooth, no beans or filler. Addition of onions and brown mustard and it's a winner. Solid burger as well. Thin patties with American and the same toppings as the dog. All in all very happy with the meal.
