What's better than a hot dog? How about one that has been deep fried? Well, if you're looking for that, then this is the legendary place to find it. They are called Rippers, and they are delicious. Crispy skin that has an amazing snap when you bite into them. It also stays insanely juicy. Why aren't there more shops doing this method all around the country? Oh yeah! Probably because it's a heart attack waiting to happen. Lol

A Ripper: otherwise known as a "Deep-Fried Hotdog". Three plain and simple words, but when combined, they are nearly pornographic. At least they are for me. Rutt's Hut has been on my punch list for a long time. Actually NJ fried Hot Dogs have been both from Rutt's and from Hiram's over in Ft. Lee. I got to Hiram's and today was my luck day to get a shot at a Ripper. Rutt's is a bit off the beaten path and is down a meandering pothole filled road in a very industrial feeling part of town surrounded by wooded areas. It seems like it would be a better place for a serial killer body dump than a Hot Dog vendor but it's been there since 1928 so it must be doing something right. There is a large, private, and free parking lot which is a huge bonus in my playbook. The building looks like it is in disrepair. There are 2 areas to eat here. A door to the left seems to be a pub/bar with sit down service and then there is the right side that I went to which is a stand up, indoor counter where you can get in and out very quickly. This is a cash only spot so come prepared. Get to an open counter worker, give them your order, and pay when they hand over the goods. I was a little intimidated when I walked in because it was clear that everyone else in the place understood the ordering routine and knew the menu (there are quite a few other items you could order other than Rippers). I stood in a corner like a potted plant for about 10 minutes and watched what others did when they walked in before I figured out the process. It's pretty simple but I did not want to screw up Rutt's world order by doing something stupid. The 3 Rippers I ordered were good (but not best in class for me). The one I liked the most was the chili cheese dressed Ripper because the chili was actually quite tasty. On the counter are large containers of brown mustard and almost-fluorescent yellow relish. People seem to love the stuff. It was a bit like sweetened sauerkraut for me and the color of it makes me think it is either radioactive or seasoned with antifreeze. I would be happy going here again but I can't say that my Rippers were anything special. I might ask for them to be a little overdone next time to add a bit of texture. What I did like about Rutt's was the history, the dilapidated building, the simplicity of the menu, the naming of their dogs as "Rippers", and the fact that it felt like I was eating among real NJ natives that knew exactly what they were there for. Experiencing local culture doesn't get much better than that.

When in the mood for a good hotdog. Rutt's Hut is the place. Quick and friendly service always. This place hasn't changed in years, but always a gem to come and enjoy a good hotdog. A weller or a ripper, they're both delicious.

RIPPER I BARELY KNOW HER! The ripper is a deep fried hotdog that was delicious. We got one and ended up getting a few more. If you're not down for the dogs the wings are worth giving a shot. Rutt's hut is truly a hidden gem. The service was super nice and fast! If you're in NJ come get you a ripper.

    Greatest place on earth.

First time trying them. My girl brought some back for me. Had 2 dogs with their relish. Wow was that great. The dogs are much better than what you get in Maryland.

Deep fried hotdogs. Delicious, but wish they had more meat toppings. Not a fan of their homemade relish, was more like a sauerkraut. They're also weird about adding mustard. I asked for a chili dog with mustard. The guy slid it to me and said you can put the mustard on yourself and then he added the chili after. Not sure why he couldn't add the mustard before. Odd, and a little annoying They also don't give refills for their fountain sodas which aren't big to begin with

Craving for a hotdog sandwich? Ruth's Hut in Clifton, NJ is the perfect place to have it. They are known for the style of deep fried hotdogs since their original roadside stand opened in 1928. The relish just as like their hotdogs is good, made from secret blend of mustard and spices. Rutt's Hut due to their longevity and for having been featured on different Food Network Shows had made them an Institution for Hotdog Sandwiches. The service was great and the location as well as the ambiance was nice. I will definitely go back and grab another Hotdog Sandwich once got the chance. Highly recommended!

Haven't been to Rutt's Hut in almost 20 Years. My daughter wanted to try it. She was a little overwhelmed when we entered as the counter was packed, but we got a spot at the middle stand up table. Daughter enjoyed the French fries and mozzarella sticks. She wasn't crazy about the hot dog. She had rice pudding and it was ok. My husband had gravy fries and two rippers with chili. He was satisfied. Went back for bread pudding and said it was really good. I had two rippers with ketchup and fries. Hot dogs were ok, fries were tasty. $50 for 6 hot dogs, a fountain drink, three fries, mozzarella sticks and two desserts. I'm not rushing back there anytime soon. Dear husband can't wait to return midweek for lunch.

Definitely a divey food option but Rutt's does not disappoint! They are cash only and have an ATM on site which is very helpful. We came as we were in the area and my boyfriend was still hungry so a cheap and quick solution was to stop at Rutt's. It was fairly calm and empty when we arrived which made ordering a breeze and our food was ready in less than 5 minutes. As always the fries were crisp and the gravy flavorful. The ripper was delicious and just the right amount of chili until my boyfriend globbed a bit too much mustard on it. As always Rutt's never disappoints and is delicious!

It looks like a little truck stop biker bar...and it is. It's been around for a while and it will leave you wishing you grabbed an extra dog to-go. Every-time I'm in Jersey I stop for a ripper. The relish is superb and the rippers are delish. Go get you some.

Lived in Jersey all my life & haven't tried Rutt's Hut so we decided to bring the kids for a Saturday late lunch/early dinner. They are the home of the Ripper and have been open since 1928! The famous hot dogs here are deep-fried but they have so much more on the menu - there's something for everyone. They have their own parking lot which is situated right above the Route 3 exit coming off of 21. There are two entrances - one entrance is for pickup orders & the other has a bar/dining area. We were seated in the dining area right away. For drinks we ordered 2 pitchers - birch beer and pepsi. We didnt even bother with apps & ordered hot dogs platters that came with 2 hot dogs, sliced tomato & cucumber, a scoop of cole slaw and 1 scoop of potato salad. We also ordered sides of sauerkraut, chili, cheese and onion rings for the table. The kids wanted something different so we got them the Nagasaki which was essentially steak & shrimp with peppers and onions over rice. The hot dogs were solid but the potato salad was amazing honestly. We used the sides to top off the dogs & it was worth every calorie - so do the thing - get all the sides!

Great spot with such simple foods. The menu's huge but we just got the hot dog platter which comes with 2 rippers, slices of cucumbers and tomatoes on a bed of lettuce, 1 large scoop of potato salad a scoop of cole slaw. Simply delicious and very quick service. The place does have tables and counters but no seats. Eating in here definitely takes you back a few eras with its retro feel!

Ask the Community - Rutt's Hut

Has the dining area and the bar reopened yet?

I just got the word today that's they're reopened with new tables and chairs- Hallelujah!

Is the bar back open yet? Been way too long!

Not yet. I heard they were renovating the dining area but I never see contractors so not sure how true that is.

Are they allowing people to put on their own relish or do you have to ask right now?

Yes they are allowing customers to put relish on their own

Has their indoor dining room reopened? To be clear, I mean the part with the tables and the waitresses. If not, does anyone know when it will?

We ate there today. I didn't see any waitresses. Went up to order, pay, and then stand to eat at the high tops, but no seats.

    Are Rutt's dogs all beef?

I asked a long time ago and was told it was a mixture of beef and pork.

    Are the hotdogs beef?

No. According to an article by Money magazine, in a recent national hot dog survey (Rutt's won!), the hot dogs are a Thumann's mix of pork and beef.… Read more

No worries here, Cruz-Missle Hot Dogs was fantastic. Came here with two work buddies and we were a little early so we had the place to ourselves (though a few people came in while we were there for to-go lunches). I love Thumann's dogs so I had the Cruz-Missile specialty dog with a Thumann's. Came with hot chili, spicy cooked onions, spicy mustard and pickled jalapeños. I also had a Snap-O-Razzo brand dog with chili, mustard, and kraut. We also shared fries, onion rings and the owner let us try his mozzarella sticks. I thought the Cruz-Missile would be a bit sloppy, but it was the perfect amount of toppings and as good as the toppings were, they didn't overwhelm the flavor of the dog. This was my first time tasting the Snap-O-Razzo dog and it was a home run. The flavor of the dog just popped and it's really delicious-unlike any other hot dog I've ever tasted. The fries, rings and mozzarella sticks were also delicious. Owner actually brought us out a second round of onion rings because the first ones weren't his hand battered rings and he wanted us to taste the real thing. Owner is a former police officer and the decor around the place is very first-responder friendly. We spoke with him at length about opening the place, why he uses the dogs and ingredients he uses, and some of the issues he's had. It was a great experience. I've eaten a LOT of dogs in a LOT of places in Jersey and while I'm not gonna put them at the top of my personal Top Hot Dogs list, in my opinion...it's in my top five...another trip is needed to perhaps move it up slightly.

Having no knowledge of this location, my curiosity led me inside. Jose, the manager, told me the chef prepares a homemade barbecue sauce, which has been a family secret recipe for over 30 years. Jose also brought to my attention a really great deal offered on Tuesdays: full rack of ribs for the cost of a half rack! He gave me a free sample of the secret sauce. That spoon size taste went a long way as I was immediately hooked by its flavor and tanginess. With the exception of the wings, I tried the sauce on all of their killer meats! The tender, juicy brisket melted in my mouth. The pork ribs fell right off the bone. My personal favorite was the bird in hand.
