Stopped in to New Corral after leaving the city from a Broadway show and remembering there was one more "all the way dog" spot I wanted to hit in Clifton. Went to Rutt's and Hot Grill a couple years back and have been meaning to come here for a while. Cool little old diner style place and the woman who was our server was friendly and attentive. Tried out the All the Way dogs and some fries and my son got a grilled cheese. He said he really enjoyed the grilled cheese and he ate most of the fries himself haha. The dogs were solid, I'd put them right on par with the other spots locally honestly. I'm sure I'll get my head taken off by the "rippers from Rutt's are the best things ever" crowd, but the thing that makes the ripper for me is the yellow cabbage relish...the dog itself I didn't find to be any better than grabbing a dog here. The chili sauce had a great flavor but it wasn't super meaty. Dogs were cooked well and the rolls were fresh. All in all I would say that these are definitely something to stop in for when in the area. Better or worse than Rutt's or Hot Grill? I don't know, I enjoyed them all honestly. It's an old time diner hidden in Clifton near Paterson. Looked very clean, sadly empty due to Covid but they were busy with take out while I was inside. The girl at the counter was polite and helpful. Now to the hot dogs. Ordered one all the way (chili, raw onions, and mustard), one with kraut and mustard, and a plain for my daughter. I can see why they make the lists. Was a very good hot dog and a different chili than some other hot dog spots. No nutmeg in it....had the flavor of something I couldn't figure out but it was very good. The kraut was good as well. The onion rings were standard but also hit the spot. Another reliable, Clifton, New Jersey hotdog joint. Quite honestly all of these hotdog locations in Clifton are a can't miss. What makes the new corral a tad different is it old-school diner layout with a typical diner style menu. Great for breakfast also, club sandwiches, etc. Howeverhowever, a stop here and a dog all the way is a must. Had to take a star away from this review because of the cash only policy. No debit or credit might be good for the pleasant and efficient servers, but who feels like taking an extra step to hit an ATM for a hotdog? This establishmwnt has been here and a staple for centuries. It was know for a good meal but has sadly slipped. I was in last week. Wealked in, place was empty. That should have been a sign. I walked past 4 staff members, who saw me enter ans sit at a table. One even said hello. Then they all disappeared. I sat for 20 minutes or longer before anyone acknowledged me. That alone should be enough to get up and leave. Then an older waitress came over, and I said" i thought you all gorgot about me". She just laighed and said what can I get you. I ordered. I decided, after this has happened the last few times in, that it would be my last. A little later i started feeling sick, chills, cramps and so on. I do believe I had a touch of food poisoning. Unpleasant from the service and wait, to the lack of caring, and then to the discomfort. Stay away. This place has long lost its attraction. This is a very unique divey old school NJ dinner / hot dog joint. The inside probably has not been renovated in 3-+ years, but i guess thats part of its appeal. It is located in a very commercial neighborhood! Dont take my wife with you, because even with Waze, she made me make 6+ wrong turns getting there and leaving the parking lot.... They are known for their hot dogs (Texas Weiners) and other typical diner food. If you want it, they probably have it. I ordered 2 hot dogs that were about an inch thick that reminded me more of a bologna then a hot dog. Not that bad, but wouldnt go out of my way for it. Had 1 plain and 1 with chili and cheese. I also had the veal cutlet sandwhich. I think that the waitress was confused that i ordered it, because she kept asking me questions about it. Not sure if she was new, of if people dont usually order it plain, but oh well. Please note that it is probably veal, but it is ground up and in a perfect circle.... So fair warning. Also ordered a large sweet tea, and it came in a 16 ounce cup, when the waitress handed it to me, she said here is your large drink.... It's been at least three years now, this ever-continuing search for NJ's best hot dog joint, and I should actually MAKE my list, but instead I just keep finding new places. My co-worker, who has willingly joined me in this foodventure and has, in fact, found places to try, suggested we shoot over to The New Corral in Clifton to try their dogs and see if they were a worthy stop. They were... I only ordered two dogs here so I went with my stand-by's...One chili-cheese dog and one chili cheese all-the-way. My buddy had one with mustard and kraut, one all the way, and one with mustard and chili. We also shared a side of fries...which were fine, but nothing special. So let me start by telling you that this place is actually a diner and not just a hot dog place so there are a LOT of other options here - and if I wasn't on this hot dog quest I'd have tried some other items. That said, the dogs were very good, and I think they are fried, but small. They came on a toasted bun, which is always a nice addition, but the cheese wasn't the hot cheese whiz I prefer, but rather American cheese. The chili is more of a sauce than a traditional chili, but delish...much better than I expected. I'd say that All the way is the way to go...it's just a nicely topped dog. I'd actually like to come back here to try some of their other food, because I bet this is one of those 'Great Jersey Diners' that make all of us so gastronomically happy. [The pizza burger recipe was not bought or was changed to a lesser sauce] Of all the hot dog places given high ratings, this place is never included, yet their hot dog all the way is the best I ever tasted. Divey hamburger joint with great prices and generous portions! I came here for a quick bite after a long morning of yard sailing. I ordered the beef barley soup, which was pretty dang good! It tasted like a stuffed pepper. I then ordered the grilled chicken Greek salad. Very large portion and the chicken was yummy, but the dressing was MEH, so I just tossed some red wine vinegar and it worked well. My bro ordered the gyro and it was filled to the brim with thick sliced gyro meat, very delicious (I snuck a bite). They apparently have great burgers and hotdogs, but I didn't get to try that. This place is so nuts. Few times I've been here to pick up salads to go, the only people I've seen eat in here are homeless looking people and people that look like they belong in nursing homes. Owner sits there and watches. He looks like a pain in the ass who'd scream at customers. Sometimes there are young good looking teens working in there. I'm a fan because this place is a nod to Americana, fast comfort food. The people that work here are a little rough around the edges, nice, sort of, but that's charming. The menu has everything you would expect and hot dog/lunch/breakfast joint to have. The coffee is good too, cheap, and served in those blue paper cups that look Greek. I have been dining at the corral since I was a little child with my father and brothers. So, I was always aware of the place; later in life ,because of the closeness. We would dine there with my wife and her autistic uncle on occasion. This latest time since the pandemic started and things started to open up with a small window the opportunity to take my uncle in law out for breakfast appeared and I asked him. Where do you want to go for breakfast, I left it up to him and he chose the Corral. The food was as always excellently made, tasty and well made. we both thoroughly enjoyed the meal. The staff were excellent and you could see that this was what a small town diner is meant to represent. Considering the local clients who regularly had breakfast on a Saturday there. I have been coming to The Corral since my childhood. I love it here whether it is take out or dine in. Only time i was ever disappointed with them was a few years ago, when my family and I dined in there we found small pieces of hair in our food. It was small so we figured it was arm hair or something since all men work in the kitchen...since then i order pick up like every week and did not encounter anything like that again. But if i do, i will complain. The girls are always so friendly. But there is one waiter in the morning I do not know if she's still there but she seems a little mean... don't like her attitude a lot. Their Greek gyro is amazing, it's too meaty for me so i tell them to cut it thinly. And ugh best thing ever. And their tuna melt is out of this world. I crave it every single week... i wish their burgers would be a little bigger though on sesame bread, because one burger really does not fill me there unless i order sides. their prices are fair, i just wish they kind of renovated the place and made it a little more modern and started accepting credit/debit. The New Corral is a small restaurant/diner that has its own unique appeal. This place has alot of character and is a great place to grab breakfast, lunch or dinner. The food always comes out quickly and is served with fresh ingredients and wonderfully friendly staff that are eager to have you back for their business. I love coming here for lunch because its close to my job and the price you pay for the food you get and the quality is pretty hard to beat. They have alot of great choices here but I recommend the grilled chicken sandwich or the cheese steak on french. Great place all around. read more

*Warning - CASH ONLY* - but they have an ATM in the restaurant. Came here for dinner one boring Sat. night and was pleasantly surprised. Didn't go for the breakfast stuff, and instead, we hit the deep fried dishes like there was no tomorrow. It was totally worth it (someone in the kitchen knew what they were doing). The Onion rings were freshly deep fried and beautifully crispy. The chicken finger appetizers were crunchy and yet still super moist (which doesn't sound hard to do, but you'd be surprised how many places can mess it up). The buffalo wings (mild) were basically like fried chicken wings, but they were fried really well - should have gotten the hot version for more flavor. The gyro was non-traditional (I think they individually fried the pieces of meat, and the pita bread too) with a mayo-like tzatziki sauce and no shredded lettuce to give it that "crunch," but it was still very good and hit a spot. The cheesesteak was probably the most disappointing part of the meal, but when we looked at the check, it looked like the order was put in as a "ribeye cheese steak" instead, which accounted for the not chopped up meat... It was still decent, just not what was expected. The waitress, who was also the cashier, was very nice. Had a great attitude, and just made us feel at ease. The menu here is only 4 pages long (and not 4 pages crammed to the brink w/ selection), but what they do have here is good, and definitely worth a trip. Also, very very reasonable prices! read more

"Save Your Appetite for a Similar Place in Town" 2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2015 NEW Each time I "try" the Corral on Hazel St in Clifton, I become disappointed with myself for wasting my time and money here. As much as I want to "like" the New Corral, I find it continually difficult to do so, due to the complaints carried within Trip Advisor combined with my own. Here are mine: - The wait staff continually changes. New people are cordial, the old timers are downright indifferent and not at all personable. This tells me something about Ownership. - One cook can be seen continually working a toothpick in his mouth while preparing your food. - The Texas Weiners "all the way" have somewhat of an "off" taste. I've had them at all of the comparable fast-food places in town. So, I can say that my comment is made after "testing" all the rest. The Corral's dogs are not all that flavorful. - I rarely order cheeseburgers. Recently, I did, to go. (I live 8 minutes from the Corral.) Once home, I attempted to remove the top of the bun to dress my burger. Guess what? All of the cheese had melted into the bottom of the top bun. You could not remove it without totally destroying the bun. So freakin aggravating. Also, the diameter of the bun, and it's quality, as well as the burger itself, was quite small; something you would serve to children at a birthday party. The taste: bland. When ordered, I asked for pickles. I was advised that the cook will not place pickles on the burger; go figure. They were placed on the side but I could not remove the top of the bun without tearing it apart, so I ate my burger without the pickles. With regard to value, their price point makes their "little" burgers expensive when compared to other fast food restaurants. - Ownership: They sit on the side and observe. Appears that the "cooks" run the place. - With regard to other reviews where more than two stars were shown, I can only presume that those patrons have not dined at other fast food places around town such as The Hearth where the flavor, portion size and food quality are superior on all counts.
