This place is probably my favorite bar of all the surrounding towns. Not only is the staff super friendly, but there's always events going on and their food is by far the best carribean food in the area! Not to mention their homemade ginger dressing. Oof I could drink that stuff as is!! If you go on a weekend I would recommend going around 8 so you can grab a good seat and catch all the action! Well, that was absolutely delicious! Plus, Stephanie and her mom were absolute dolls. Just so very nice. I've been driving past this place on the way to the grocery store for the two years. I've lived here, and I finally stopped in today, so glad I did. I had the Jamaican jerk shrimp, which was absolutely delicious. Ok first off - the women who run this establishment are so welcoming and friendly. It really feels like they invite you into their home when there. The food is made by the mother, Miriam, who makes a mean beef patty! The jerk burger is also a fave of my brothers, and my dad always gets the jerk shrimp and cheesesteak. They have live music every Weds with a house band and open mike, and Karaoke every Sat. I had a blast at karaoke! Kitchy and fun lights and a good song selelection. We had an option to either go to Oakland diner. We chose's & Grill. I understand we're going through tough times and money is tight for everyone. My 16-year-old son was charged $7.50 for a Shirley Temple and I was charged $2.50 for a dry roll. My lovely fiancé had gotten five shrimp over a small of salad for $24. The curry chicken wasn't so bad but it needed the roll. I don't feel that I should've been charged for that. The total ended out to be $90 for a couple of drinks and two entrees, which I think is absurd. When I brought this up to our waitress she simply said "I just work here." It would've been nice to find a new local bar to eat at, but after I got the check I didn't feel like I wanted to return. If you would like to redeem yourself maybe throw me a couple Shirley Temples and a roll free of charge. Although the karaoke was pretty good. We give you 2 stars for the karaoke. read more

Everything seems really fresh and made-to-order. I thought everything I had was tasty, and the jerk sauce was excellent. However, our table was the only one in there and it took 2.5 hours to get apps and entrees. There were no servers, just the bartender. We have now been to Hansil's twice and both times have thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We are very surprised that both times we were there the dinning room was not very full as the food here is better than the food at a lot of other places, and there is no credit card surcharge. The places specializes in Jerk seasoning having a regular menu and then basically a Caribbean menu with Jerk seasoning. We tried the mixed appetizer with jerk seasoning which had shrimp, chicken wings, chicken fingers, and French fries all with jerk seasoning. It was very good with enough heat to let you know it was a jerk seasoning. Very authentic. This time we both had burgers I had the bbq bacon cheddar cheese burger topped with onion rings, and my wife had the Caribbean Sun which was an egg over easy and cheddar. These were are only complaint as we asked for medium rare and they were more medium than anything. But that was the only flaw. The waitress was wonderful and the beer selection is very good. She even turned the music down for us in the dinning room as someone was playing way to much Eminem for our liking. Definitely a dive bar but they have an awesome Wednesday night open mic night starting with a great house band & always a great variety talented local musicians, mostly playing classic rock. This review is for music but people rave about food too. Line-up often includes a horn section & they have a guy working lights too. I hear the Caribbean food is awesome (not much for vegetarians!) Crowd is 80 percent guys, mostly in their 50s. I'd love to see some female musicians in the mix. Wine is awful lol! read more

Absolutely a gem of a find. Don't let you looks of an old dive bar deceive you. This is hands down the best Caribbean food around in Bergen county. I've never experienced such flavor in my mouth from the jerk chicken. Their signature recipe Steve's Caribbean Habanero hot sauce is to die for. Warning use with caution! The staff is very friendly. Steph is awesome. Always remembers each customer and makes pleasant conversation and makes you feel at home. My friend introduced me to this place almost a year ago and I have been back several times. I would recommend this place to anyone especially if you like spicy! What a rip off. $63 for 2 bud lights, 2 margaritas, and 1 app and a burger and cheese steak? First of all my cheesesteak was a BURGER PATTY and it was disgusting and so was the actual burger and I am not picky about burgers. All entrees fries are extra. Fries are good I will give them that but you can get the same at the island on 23. Band that was playing on 5/11 was God awful kept having the mic in the amp make insane sounds and they were charging a $10 cover to benefit the March of dimes...hello...keep politics out of the bar! This is a dark little place with a great live jam on Wednesdays and I go to see old friends there when I'm in town. But $10.00 for a tall well drink? Really? We're talking no-name vodka and soda here, not a top shelf brand martini. There's no more alcohol in this drink than the small glass. Just more soda and/or juice. C'mon. This is a dive bar up at the ass end of Bergen County. Not a famous West Village music place. Can't vouch for the Caribbean food which is in the $15-$20 bracket cause I haven't tried it. The $7.95 plain hamburger (without fries which are $2.00 extra - good grief, these are frozen, not hand cut) is very good though - cooked to order & comes on a nice kaiser roll with lettuce and tomato - but almost a 40 minute wait for it? A friend also ordered a burger just before I did and he too waited a good long time. It didn't seem to be all that busy and these were burgers, not something complicated to make. I thought the drink prices were high when I was there last year. Now they have gone up and are even higher. $10 for a simple mixed drink is just ridiculous. This is a laid back neighborhood family-owned bar and restaurant. When is the last time you were in a place where everyone of any age comes in the door and their first order of business is to shake the owner's hand to show respect? Come in, greet Steve and his wife Miriam and get the Jerk Chicken and Shrimp combo, or the Roti, or the jerk chicken bar pie, or the Hansil's burger. All prepared to order and delicious. If you like your spicy food SPICY, then ask for a tiny container of Steve's "special sauce" (respect this sauce: seriously. Tines of your fork, do not pour over your food: all Scotch Bonnet/Habanero... Fail to heed these words and you will taste nothing for days!) Do not ask for a wine list here. (I am an area wine manager: trust me, this is not where you come to drink wine). There are 4 beers on tap (Labatt's Blue is the deal), and a decent selection by the bottle. Traditional cocktails are no problem, order one of those bougie princess drinks and, well, re-read my first sentence...! Definitely come for the Wednesday night rock/blues open mic night. A whole lot of talented musicians (with only a couple of not so talented), no cover. This family supports a lot of live music, including young people, so support an unfortunately rare institution. Got here on a stormy night after a hike. My friend and I were apprehensive due to appearance. We took our chances and we were blown away! We both ordered the curry, chicken and veggie. The salad was so, so fresh wow!, and their house ginger dressing is spectacular! We were greeted by the owner, an older Trinidadian man who was just delightful and sweet! You would not know from the looks of it but they're extensive Caribbean and jerk menu as well as burgers and club sandwiches have you enlightened. A friend recommended this restaurant for a steak dinner. We knew we were in for it when none of the tables were set and that half of the room was in darkness. We ordered the 10 ounce steak medium rare with stir fried vegetables and a salad and soup. The waitress came back and said they don't have any soup. What we got was not a steak but three thin pieces of over cooked chewy roast beef. We asked the waitress if this was what she served all the customers. She gave us an apologetic grin and said "yes". We ordered Jamaican Jerk Chicken , Jerk shrimp , and jerk ribs. all have a kick , but all are cooked perfectly. the chicken was delicious and not dried out , the shrimp crunchy , spicy and cooked to perfection , and the ribs were also delicious. Idk what to say about this place but stay clear. I'm a dive bar king but this place is off the chain. The smell coming out of this place is unreal. One Budweiser is 4.50 are you kidding me and then the bartender tells you after you order a drink it's a 10 dollar minimum with a card. So that means they gonna get you for 3 beers at 13.50 to swipe your card. Thank god I had cash one beer and out. As far as food lol I rather lick a trash dumpster I'm sure it's a lot cleaner then this place. I went in on a Friday night and they had 4 customers in there. I first went in and used the bathroom omg my boots where sticking to the floor in there that's when you know what the back looks like if they can't keep the front clean. I've drank in a lot better establishments in the area and have not seen prices like this place.
